@orlp Oh, that's an interesting thought. "Up" is defined as "in the plane of the planets, anything pointed toward X feature."
Seems reasonable.

oh no where is up ヽ(。_°)ノ ¯\( ͡° ͜_ʖ ಠ)/¯

@MartinEnder I was going to do a challenge, but actually found a duplicate. :)

hello

ven
hi @orlp
mh, is there no rooms for cjam?

nope
or well, I don't believe there is

ven
9:07 PM
wondering if there's some kind of any and/or all builtin.
Could reduce with & in the worst case scenario...

Holy crap, I'm almost at 200 today.

ven
GG :)

@orlp i approve

Maybe I should write a challenge just so I can get to the cap. :)

Just curious, who's hosting ppcg.lol?

9:10 PM
Quill IIRC

I think it's Quill
Ninja

code design question: I'm making a maze generator for a generic map. Should the generator take a map without any points, and add points in a maze-like fashion, or should it take map with lots of points, and remove connections to make it a maze?

@FryAmTheEggman did you make progress, if any, on the leaderboard for my challenge? I forgot if you said you would

I wonder how long it will be kept up for, I've been using it recently as a PPCG URL-shortening tool...

@NathanMerrill what kind of properties do you want from your maze

9:12 PM
well, its actually independent of the algorithm. I plan on using lots of algorithms (including wall adders and wall removers)

@LegionMammal978 it's definitely quill

the question is whether its better to add nodes (and the connections between them), or to use existing nodes and remove the connections

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh, no I totally forgot :( I'm probably going to be rather busy this week, but if I get a chance I will.

@NathanMerrill what was it?

9:14 PM
@FryAmTheEggman okai :3 no rush

@orlp oooh, pretty. I'm not positive if I'll be able to do that one (because I don't enforce a 2D map (or a square map either), but I'll look into it

Q: Tiling, given vertex configuration

jshTask The task is to tile polygons, given a vertex configuration. Scoring Your score is equal to the "complexity level" your submission reaches. Complexity levels are cumulative, meaning that to reach #3 you must also support #1 & #2. Submissions at an equal complexity level are distinguished...

@orlp oh, I was looking at the wrong section. Funny enough, I'm working on that algorithm (using it as my design "test")
(The spanning tree algorithm)

@orlp those loop-erased random walks look like they'd make a good challenge.

yeah, I've never seen that algorithm (and I've done a lot with maze generation)
that said, it has a O(infinite) maximum runtime

@NathanMerrill so does uniform random number generation if coprime with 2

We need a LQP recommend deletion reason for invalid answer.;

@Downgoat the initializer because there might be multiple

@orlp you can still have multiple with optional args

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ LQP?

yes I agree
31120551 indeed

ven
So no way to get stack element type in CJam :(. aw

9:26 PM
@Downgoat in the class because its easier (and you can define alternate constructors/default params)

Low Quality Post?

@Downgoat you misunderstand me

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 low quality post

Image(std::string filename) and Image(const std::istream& file) for example

@orlp ok. I just want to descide this now because I'm starting on class tokenizer and itll be difficult to change it later

9:28 PM
@Downgoat I still prefer it in the class declaration
and just use secondary constructors
if they do have different types

@NathanMerrill can you give me an example?
I like it with the class but idk if that'll work

I'd say in the initializer

Do you ever hide in the bathroom when you are sick at work but you made it all the way to the very last hour while managing to remain productive?
3

Because I just did and it actually made me feel good enough to continue working for another twenty minutes. But now I feel crappy again.

9:31 PM
@Rainbolt ...

Just in case you were having gross thoughts, our bathroom is impeccably clean, and I wasn't actually using it.

@Rainbolt "crappy" <_< ... I (figuratively) see what you did there.

That was an accident and now I see why Legion said "..."
I'm bad at puns

> our bathroom is impeccably clean
Now that's surprising.

@Rainbolt I'd consider somebody who makes puns without trying is quite good at puns

9:34 PM
That's my secret. I appear modest but really I am trying hard

so are you modest or good at puns? :)

@NathanMerrill hm. i don't completely understand this. If the arguments are with the class, then where is the "primary" constructor?

that is the primary constructor

@NathanMerrill I have no witty response. I really need to go home

lol
clearly modest

9:39 PM
closes Chrome tab titled "modesty puns - Google Search"

@Rainbolt my trick is to play Nethack and every ten minutes alt-tab between all the windows and shake your mouse like crazy
bonus points for a dramatic sigh

class Image(file: Stream){
    constructor(filename: String){
        this(File(filename))
    }
}

I don't think I can do that at work. I've never played Nethack though. Is it text based or something?

Yes. There are graphical tilesets but those are for heretics.

@Doorknob if I use wingdings instead of the standard font, is that ok?

9:42 PM
I enjoyed the text based version of Minecraft that comes with the ComputerCraft mod. If it's like that then I would probably enjoy Nethack

@NathanMerrill Uhhh... if anyone managed to do that and not quit after 10 minutes, I'd be impressed.

Oooh! Let me kill that bell!

@Rainbolt yeah, it's a textbased console game, it's good fun when your power goes out or you have no internet

wait, it works even when your computer doesn't have power?
woah
that's quite a game

@NathanMerrill On a smartphone.
There is a NetHack android app.

9:45 PM
ah, I play the heretic version called Pixel Dungeon
er

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 There is? I've played on my phone, but by SSHing into the public server.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

MegoBinary Recurrence Sequences code-golf sequence recursion math arithmetic A binary recurrence sequence is a recursively-defined sequence of the following form: This is a generalization of the Fibonacci (x = 1, y = 2, a = [1, 1], alpha = 1, beta = 1) sequence and the Lucas (x = 1, y = 2, a = [2...

@Doorknob here

@NathanMerrill ಠ_ಠ some of us are poor and can only afford laptops

@Quill ah, I'm on a laptop right now :)

9:48 PM
I haven't had a laptop since college, and I probably never will
I don't need portability, and it seems like you pay more for portability

well, I used to not have a smartphone, so if I needed any internet outside of home/work/school), I needed a laptop

I just got a smartphone in the last couple of months
Still going through that "I think talking to Siri is funny and everyone around me probably thinks it's funny too." phase
My partner is stored as "Davy ^_^" in my phone, which Siri pronounces "Davy cap cap"

Anonymous
@Rainbolt Sounds like CTF team voice chat

I recently renamed my Macbook's user to Quill (because I didn't want my name appearing in screenshots or whatever) and Siri started calling me Quill <_<

10:12 PM
@Quill wait wat, your IRL name is not quill??

I wish

TIL
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ y u expos Quil rael naem ;_;

his real name is quill, no matter how hard he denies it

lel
@Downgoat in case that wasn't sarcasm, his real name is nowhere near that

10:26 PM
a while ago I used to play CS that much that some of the guys that I used to play with started calling me Quill offline

Woah, quills real name isn't quill?

cheddar> var b: String = 4
cheddar> b
4

is that a string?
>_>

4 is a number not a string ._.

Next you're going to say something crazy, like helka's real name isn't Calvin

10:31 PM
^
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan or that alex is not really a bird

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan no. my name is not quill. It's Quill
respect The Pronouns

wait, why isn't it spelt Qwill

I don't know, @Doungoat

Doo-un-go-at?

@ven what's the context?
@ven also here

10:37 PM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan it isn't
it's fred

it's not Fred, his name is Daphne

I actually know what it is, and I can confirm that it is neither of those things.

@ven this is the closest thing to a CJam room, feel free to ping me with questions

Question: How does one run bash in another mounted partition?
I'm trying to do stuff from a live CD

10:39 PM
@LegionMammal978 cd /Volumes/whatever; bash; commands; here

@Downgoat As in, act as root for that partition

Quick, somebody pick 6 random numbers in [0 10]!

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan v

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan 4 4 4 4 4 4

You guys are really bad at this.

10:41 PM
that's the problem with randomness, you never know

chmod -R /Volumes/whatever 777 && chown -R /Volumes/whatever $(whoami)

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan 0 10 0 10 0 0 10

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan 2 5 4 9 3 4

I give up. I'm just going to random.org instead Thankyou @Downgoat For actually doing what I requested.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan ;__;

10:41 PM
you guys are doing it wrong

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan 1, 3, 6, 3, 4, 9

[4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4]

Anonymous
It's impossible to tell whether a single sample is truly random or not

@Mego better

Anonymous
Randomness is a quality of populations, not of individual samples

10:42 PM
'random' is simply a property that any amount of samples does not possess
also wrong
randomness is a quality of a process, not its result

Anonymous
Ok fair enough

Anonymous
My words don't be better enough

@Downgoat I'm trying to edit users and stuff that are on the mounted root drive
(Not the users of the live CD)

cheddar> var b: String = 3
Runtime Error: [object Object] is not a class
dammit

@Downgoat Figured it out, it's chroot

10:46 PM
cheddar> var b: String = 3
Runtime Error: Attempted to set b to non-String, Number
cheddar> var b: String = 'test'
cheddar> b

Why are you using that syntax? String b = 'test' would be a lot clearer.

no not really

and see:
The most vexing parse is a specific form of syntactic ambiguity resolution in the C++ programming language. The term was used by Scott Meyers in Effective STL (2001). It is formally defined in section 8.2 of the C++ language standard. == Example with classes == An example is: The line is seemingly ambiguous, since it could be interpreted either as a variable definition for variable time_keeper of class TimeKeeper, initialized with an anonymous instance of class Timer or a function declaration for a function time_keeper which returns an object of type TimeKeeper and has a single (unnamed...
I'm not trying to reinvent C
and that syntax is really odd imo

@Downgoat error should be Attempted to make variable b a <type>, expected <type>

Anonymous
10:48 PM
@Downgoat Don't have function declarations. Assuming you can call a function before it is defined in a source file, declarations are completely unnecessary.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ok that's better

maybe ...variable "<varname>"

?

enclose variable with quotes in error

oh, they are enclosed with backticks everywhere atm

10:52 PM
Question: How does sed's s/foo/bar/g act with binary files?

@LegionMammal978 not well

Because I just renamed my home directory and I'm worried about broken filepaths

oh
i dont think sed is the right tool to fix that

Anonymous
You should've been using symlinks and environment variables :P

Anonymous
Any feedback on this?

10:56 PM
that penguin who posted that looks familiar

@Mego Hey, I didn't write the proprietary software

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan :D
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan oh, u haet ches? ;__;

I think of V as very similar to retina. It is a golfing language, but it's only good at certain types of challenges. For other types, it's even longer.

vim is very different from retina
pls tell me how to edit file in retina

ik but it's similar in that it's occasionally great for golfing and occasionally terrible.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan er, this is a string manipulation challenge... :3

11:01 PM
^

then again, jolf is probably longer
haven't tried

Did you read my explanation?

@LegionMammal978 Why are you running things as root?

@VTCAKAVSMoACE is the rummy sequence the same as this one?

@Downgoat Yes. ;)

@Mego I was chrooted from a live CD

okay well i guess already have an algorithm :D

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ what is the shortest way to concat two arrays in JS?

[].concat(a1, a2)

@Downgoat [...a,...b]

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ that's not shorter than concat ;_; you see anyway to golf this? :3 I'm sure the .fills can be golfed >_>

11:23 PM
@Downgoat Can't you just add them?
I thought the point of weak typing is that you could do cool things like that
> [1] + [1,2]
< "11,2"
well that's pretty dumb
hrm

JS: The cons of weak typing with the cons of stong typing. what could go wrong!

So it just casts the arrays to strings? laaaaameeeee
@LegionMammal978 You're probably using BusyBox which might have Python components I guess?
(just realized BusyBox is written in C lel)

Today was a pretty good PPCG day. I 1) Got 216 rep. 2) hit the daily vote cap and 3) Got the "Sportsmanship" badge. Overall, a pretty good day. :)
