Does anyone know what happened to We are the fallen?

@LuisMendo Tapping?
@LuisMendo Which technique?

@AlexA. please burninate this

wow -4 in <1 minute

@Quill Reminds me of these (nsfw?)

nevermind alex

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ -5
I downvoted it.

9:05 PM
It's at -8 now, and was at -4 when I posted the link.

@zyabin101 That's when the right hand, instead of plucking the strings with the pick, taps (presses) on the strings. It allows faster playing. In the video flawr linked, you can see it from 0:40 on. See how the right hand moves to the fretboard

@mınxomaτ wtf
He checks the hat's pulse

@Quill Don't tell me you don't know her comics :D

9:11 PM
@flawr What do/did you play?

@LuisMendo Oboe, but I was never really happy with that.
(At least that what I noticed when I stopped.)
So in the recent years I tried to strum on the guitar my mom hand lying around.
But without making any significant progress...

Hey @LuisMendo, Mind if I ask you some MATL questions?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ "Go ahead."

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ He does not, go ahead.

ninja'd

9:17 PM
@flawr I like how that instrument sounds :-)
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I'll be happy to help, go ahead!

K, just a sec

double ninja'd

Haha. I see

Has anyone ever asked something like "Hey, can I ask you a question?" and been denied? :P

@El'endiaStarman Yes. I accept no questions.

9:18 PM
@El'endiaStarman Probably the most correct answer would be "You already have", anyway

@LuisMendo I also like how it sounds when played by a pro, but I never got there. I think sometimes it was an expensive squee rubber duck.

@AlexA. And speak no Spanish

Well crap, now I can't even remember what it was.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Anything with convolution?

@LuisMendo Mi español es no bueno, por favor.

9:18 PM
How does y work? Is it just duplicate second element from the top?

@AlexA. ... and you keep trying, which is the worst part :-P

hahaha

Actually that was almost perfect :-)
Just move "no" one step back

For real?

Yeah!

9:19 PM
What's por favor, isn't that please?

Just that "no" goes before the verb, unlike in English

That moment when you try to fail at speaking Spanish and fail that.

@AlexA. Yep... I thoyght that's what you actually wanted to say, wasn't it?

So it'd be "Mi español no es bueno"?

@AlexA. ¡¡Perfecto!!

9:20 PM
The "por favor" part was just being silly because "My Spanish is not good, please" doesn't make any sense :P

@AlexA. I took that as "... not good, so please (be patient)" or something like that

Oh, no. I'm not that articulate.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Pity :-) Ask anytime. You can also visit the MATL chatoom

@LuisMendo Why does "1 2 3" print
1
2
3
Isn't that stack upside down?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Oh, sorry. I just saw this

9:22 PM
Haha, I have a lot of questions about MATL, I'm just not sure which ones are worth asking.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Yes. Duplicate second elemant from top, and push it on top

How would I say "My Spanish is not good, so please be patient"? Mi español no es bueno, por favor ...?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ At the end of the program, the stack is implicitly printed bottom to top

Oh, I thought it was top to bottom.
That would explain why I'm confused.

@AlexA. "...por favor ten paciencia" (literally "have patience")

9:24 PM
Bottom to top makes more sense if you think of the stack as holding elements of an array. If you print bottom to top then you start at the beginning of the array and print to the end.
@LuisMendo ¡Gracias!

Yeah, but in general with a stack you access the top element, so printing would just be while (pop()) { print() }
That's the way that makes the most sense to me.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ The stack is LIFO for pooping and pushing. But for implicitly printing at the end of the program, it prints bottom to top
7

HAHAHA

pooping. lol

@AlexA. ¡De nada! :-)
Oops

9:26 PM
> The stack is LIFO for pooping and pushing
I'm dying

blush

Hahahaha

Countdown until I get 10 stars...

hahaha! :P

I guess I'll leave it that way, hehe

9:27 PM
so it prints a pooping bottom to pushing top?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ It works that way if you call D (display) three times. But if you call XD (which is done implicitly at the end), it prints "as a whole", bottom to top
@Optimizer :-D

I think "pooping and pushing" is on par with Downgoat's "bitshit."

@AlexA. Hahaha. That's a good one! Hadn't seen it

@LuisMendo Should I switch to the MATL room?

Man, programming has the best opportunities for fun typos
2

9:29 PM
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Maybe it's better, yes. So other people can see it there. More centralized

Cool. gimme a sec

A sec you have been granted

@AlexA. thankyou kind sir

you'rewelcome

@AlexA. if by fun you mean you wanna scratch your eyes out with a rusty spoon, then sure

9:32 PM
@AlexA. Cooler Emu Yew

I noticed we had no discrete convolution/polynomial multiplication challenge.

9:40 PM
@Quill when will you anagram your name?
Hell Quit?

There's no e in Quill
nor is there a t

The Quill.
his github, because quill has no others.
Ill LQ/QL, but nothing else.

Even that isn't an anagram because it's missing the u and has an extra l

AAlex.
I'd like to ban built'ins in this challenge
The question is what builtins

Convolution functions and polynomial multiplication functions?

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

flawrDiscrete Convolution or Polynomial Multiplication code-golfmathnumber-theorypolynomialsarray-manipulation Given two lists of integers, your submission should calculate and return the discrete convolution of the two. Interestingly, if you consider the list elements as coefficients of polynomials...

"Built-in functions which trivialize this task are not allowed" I guess would work but might be a little too general.

I'm just not sure how well that will be received.
But on the other hand I think too many languages have built ins for one or the other.

I've seen that specific phrasing used before but I can't remember how angry that made the community. :P

@flawr simple solution: allow people to only use BF

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Bad idea.

9:51 PM
"Built-ins which trivialize this task, including functions for convolution and polynomial multiplication, are not allowed." <-- That's probably what I'd say. I think it's clear enough.

@flawr no dip :p

@AlexA. I think "built-ins which trivialize this task" is relatively open.

Yeah, that's true

"lion's share of the work"?

What other builtins might there be that trivialize the task?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ lions are cats are lazy

9:53 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ IMO that phrasing is worse

hm
General rule of thumb: if your code is 10x longer without it, it's not allowed

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ for(), while(), if()

:D
I think I just ban explicitly polynomial multiplication and convolution
Should I also ban discrete fourier transform?

it'll save the life of a cat

9:57 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I know, convolution can do anything

I bet a fourier transformed cat does not look like this.

@flawr If it would directly solve the challenge then yes

@flawr I was going to suggest that
on the other hand, that corresponds to circular convolution
so not that useful

This is a cat and it's fourier transform.

10:09 PM
o_o

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Don't worry, fourier transforms of natural images all look quite similar to the human eye.

what does the eye look like?

@QPaysTaxes The fourier transform will also just be flipped? It is a linear transformation.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ What eye?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ when I can find a decent anagram of "fuck my life" that elicits the response "aaaand it's time for another coffee"

any human eye

10:12 PM
That's what cats do all the time anyway

@QPaysTaxes I bet Matlab's fft2 (that's discrete Fourier transform)

No, but Octave is.

@QPaysTaxes Nope. But Octave is. And it's almost the same
Ninja'd

I've done FFTs on images with Python as well.

10:17 PM
@flawr log scale?

@QPaysTaxes That sounds really weird

@LuisMendo Well that one was just photoshop.
=)

@QPaysTaxes ...what?

But yes, x -> log(1+x)
Night

@QPaysTaxes One being a shit ninja seems only tangentially related to one getting the shit ninja'd out of them.
@flawr Good night! Dream of kittens and Fourier transformed black holes

10:21 PM
Hey guys and (non existing) girls

are we fourier transforming cats again

@QPaysTaxes Pastebin with all the messy code and commented out code and stuff.

@Bálint Why do you assume that girls don't exist?

@AlexA. One of the Rules of the Internet: there are no girls on the internet.

In this chat there's probably none

10:22 PM
I don't remember the Rule number though.

@El'endiaStarman :-D

Don't be optimist, be realist.

@El'endiaStarman I was not aware of this rule... nor do I think my girlfriend, who is much more well versed in the Internet than I am, knows of it. :P

@AlexA. IIRC the very next rule is that anyone who claims to be a girl on the internet is lying.

I knew it

10:24 PM
@El'endiaStarman A lot less true for the non-Internet (social networking)

That's why she's so sweet :3

@AlexA. BTW, the other day you mentioned, that whenever you write Ruby, you use a 2 space indentation

@AlexA. DAWW THAT'S SO SMOOTH
@MarsUltor Do you know what I mean by "Rules of the Internet"?

@Bálint Yep. Granted I don't write Ruby often but I try to follow the indentation standard for it.

10:25 PM
The only dealbreaker for me when it comes to standards is indenting with tabs. That's why I'll never be able to learn Go. :P

Whenever I wrute Ruby, I use 7 space indentation, and almost everything is on the sane line

@LuisMendo A classic :D

Yeah... I can't help linking it over and over again :-D

@Bálint Why in the world would you use 7 spaces for indentation??

@AlexA. Italic 7 looks really weird.

10:26 PM
I never made a single line if Ruby code though.

user image
2

> sane line

@El'endiaStarman 1. Apparently that's rule 30. 2. That only applies to an extremely small part of the Internet

Indenting 7 spaces is what you do when you write FORTRAN 77 code. (Literally--it requires 7 spaces of indentation)

@MarsUltor The Rules of the Internet are basically all pretty tongue-in-cheek though.

10:27 PM
For labeled lines, yeah

@AlexA. so why is it fortran 77 and not fortran 7?

har

> Final drafts of this revised standard circulated in 1977
I think the 7 is from the punchcard code format

I wanted to read about FORTr

an(d)
Double purpose... oh yeah

10:32 PM
Ah yes, dear Fortrand, cousin of Bertrand Russell.

I can't post messages.

You just did

Does anyone here actually use Wolfram (the programming language)? Just interested.

That was like the 5th try

10:34 PM
@mınxomaτ Well, there are quite a few Mathematica answers

So, I wanted to read about FORTRAN a bit, and I found this sentence:
"If you're looking for a programming language in use on everything from $25 computers that fit in the palm of your hand to the largest computers on earth you only have a couple of choices. If you want that programming language to be the same one your grandparents might have used when they were beginning his or her career, then there's only one option.
There's something wrong with it, but I don't know what...

Was the answer JavaScript? I'm gonna be disappointed if it isn't.

@Quill That's a really cheeky way to get stars.
Also, the orga section is broken

10:40 PM

@Quill That's really neat.

Agreed. Nice find.
GitLab is kind of garbage though. The interface isn't similar to GitHub and I'm used to GitHub so I don't like it.
Not as bad as BitBucket though.

Gitlab is meh.

@Quill why can't I remove a domain entirely from the config?

bai guys studying for finals

10:47 PM
I only want TNB, not the tavern/javascript rooms.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ nj BAI!

@Quill I've had this installed for ages, but I don't think I've used it once.
(Mostly because I keep forgetting about it.)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ laterino

@Quill no, I'm studying for french not latin :p

@MartinBüttner it's probably one of things that looks really awesome when you don't have it installed

@Quill missing an accent on the o

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ what error do you get?

I made the mistake of watching some videos of Overwatch. Now I want it :(

10:49 PM
@quartata I figured I missed an accent, though I thought it'd be on the A

@Quill Oh you're missing one there too

ffs

I just didn't notice
There's an accent grave on the A and an accent circonflexe on the O

@Quill nvm updating fixed it

Okay, I think I know what the issue is chicken feet

10:52 PM
>_> didn't fix sending messages
@Quill y u fail me

I merged that fix a while ago
Do you get an error, what happens?

yeah, but a message in the program itself
not a code error

@Quill maybe user error, but HOW SEND MESSAGE

Hmmm
That means the promise isn't resolving... I think my regex is broken
