@BaldBantha Truer words have never been spoken
Avocados are worth the emotional rollercoaster though
@QPaysTaxes Doorknob has a neat thing for that on his GitHub
@QPaysTaxes xscast for terminals
ffmpeg for anything else
@AlexA. Yeah, use that when you want to show keypresses too.
I've used LICEcap for screencaps and I like it.
If you find that your screen is GUI, you've probably left it in the sun too long
3
00:04
ffmpeg
@QPaysTaxes not sure how well it works but if you have screen recording software something like ezgif.com/video-to-gif can be used to convert
it's more hassle though, undoubtedly
(n=>Array.from(Array(n),(_,i)=>i).map((e,i,a)=>`${e}+${a[n-i-1]+1}=`+n))(3)
that's much golfier
still has duplicates though
@El'endiaStarman I use lightshot for screen captures
@Optimizer I almost believed that until I saw who was talking >_>
@AlexA. put it in the freezer to get code
00:15
no duplicates or 0+: (n=>Array.from(Array(n),(_,i)=>i).map((e,i,a)=>i!=Math.floor(n/2)&&e!=0?${e}+$‌{a[n-i-1]+1}=+n:'').filter(n=>n!=''))(3)
I thought of a good name for a JavaScript minifier: Trash Compactor.
ɹɐɥ ɹɐɥ
dıp pooƃ = ɐɥɔɐɹıɹs + oʎɐɯ
@AlexA. many developers each year have to life with JavaScript in their lives, with your easy, affordable monthly donations to us at the Quill Foundation for Misguided Developers, maybe together we can give these people a second chance.
oh wow...
var a = true
!!a // true
What makes people dislike JS so much? I agree it can kinda be a mess, but I don't hate it
00:21
Because type coercions and truthy comparisons
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Screen captures as in gifs/videos? Or still-frame screen shots?
@El'endiaStarman Oh, still-frame
@HelkaHomba I'd hate to live in a world without it
@Quill what's wrong with that?
var a = ''
!!a // false
00:23
@HelkaHomba a language's messiness is the number 1 factor in determining whether I like a language
Because '' is falsey
it just feels hacky to be able to double reverse something
people do it in java all the time
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I know why, but still
>>> x = 0
>>> not x
True
>>> not not x
False
>>> x = 1
>>> not x
False
>>> not not x
True
00:24
@Quill Ok. Though "I have " + p + " puppies." is more convenient than "I have " + str(p) + " puppies."
You can do it in Python too.
Doesn't python complain without the str()?
That's what I mean
@trichoplax I think that's the point that Helka is making.
@HelkaHomba and if p is an object, then you're probably gonna get annoyed when it doesn't throw a interpreter warning and spits out something useless
00:25
@HelkaHomba its possible to do that kind of clean code and still have static typing
@Quill If p is an object, I'd blame the user/programmer, not the language.
but not in dynamic languages
@Quill In what language could you not apply the "not" operator to something twice?
@HelkaHomba I don't know man, maybe I just don't like the thought that it's a thing
Surely it's the type coercion that's the problem, rather than the number of applications (for those who find it a problem at all)
00:27
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ And yet, programmers still love to throw their hands in the air and curse at JS
@trichoplax Type coercion is the problem indeed
@Quill Programmers curse at every language :p
@trichoplax I agree. What do you mean by "number of applications"?
I'm working on both fixing it and making it throw a compiler warning, but I need to know how to override default constructors
C:\>SET /A N=0
0
C:\>SET /A R=!N
1
C:\>SET /A Rp=!!N
0
Heck, you can even do it in BATCH :P
@NathanMerrill "I agree. What do you mean?" made me read twice...
00:28
lol
var a = ''
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!a // false
@NathanMerrill Quill was talking about applying not twice
can't you just do bool(a)?
It'd be a thing like "if ! negate all that follow"
@trichoplax ah
00:29
@trichoplax ok, but what is expected besides conversion to bool?
@Quill is that a problem?
meh
5 mins ago, by Quill
@HelkaHomba I don't know man, maybe I just don't like the thought that it's a thing
I guess it's weird that you can 'not' a string in the first place, but it can be handy
@HelkaHomba I don't personally see a problem at all. But if there's any complaint to be made about !!a returning a bool, surely it's that it converts a to a bool, not that applying it twice gives a bool
> 'not' a string
00:33
he just verbed not
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ And punned on "knot".
Yeah it's the knot that I was picking up on
I'm pun focused
Anyone know a generalized scrabble solver site that lets you type in more that two blank letters (unlike scrabble-solver.com)
Just a word matcher I guess, nothing to do with scrabble letter limits
00:36
Crossword solver?

Q: Can I make Google+ photos pickable from Hangouts?

EgobitsI have a Nexus 5 with Android 6.0.1. When I'm using Hangouts for MMS, the photo picker doesn't show any of my public G+ photos or albums. I can send them through the Photos app, but having to switch in and out is becoming a pain. The image picker in Hangouts allows me to Open from -> Photos, but...

@HelkaHomba get on and check it out
Oh God
:::::DDDD
(n=>Array(n).fill``.map((_,i,a)=>i<=n/2&&i>0?`${i}+${n-i}=`+n:'').filter(x=>x))(300)
kinky golfy
00:39
why not just .filter(x=>x)?
> sweet android
haha the mods don't even want the site
I hesitated to even ask there, tbh.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ <3
Is anyone else seeing problems with loading imgur images through SE?
right at this second, yes
00:41
Hmm, I'm not.
@Quill does & work instead of &&?
@Maltysen <3 for you too
It's always really bothered me that self-closing script tags don't work
6
I know why they don't work but it's still annoying
I'm getting images working fine then not a few minutes apart
00:42
@Quill <3 =)
I can never remember what languages that trick works under
@Quill also, you don't seem to use ,a in the map.
ah, I did like a few revisions ago
double domo arigato
What's the bear equivalent word for "humanity"?
grrrrr
00:43
@HelkaHomba bearkind?
@HelkaHomba the species or the quality?
It just occurred to me that you may not mean in the language of bears
> Oh the ursanity!
Hydraulic Press Channel is the most immediately descriptive name for a YouTube channel ever.
00:45
n00b arduino question: how do you set port values? is it through registers or memory maps or special cpu instructions or what? (in C)
@Geobits ah, good job
@Maltysen port = N

@Geobits Your welcome
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ the answer was that system libraries do it for you, btw (I don't know why I ask here before googling)
00:49
> There is no candy more magnificent or more powerful
@Geobits how can he play with a broken arm?
unless he controls the mouse with his feet?
@HelkaHomba That's amazing and crazy. How could anyone eat all that??
@Quill No, he's alternating keyboard and mouse with his right. It's pretty impressive.
00:50
@Quill ╚(ಠ_ಠ)=┐
It takes more than a broken arm to stop him from playing minecraft.
@Geobits thats pretty cool

By the way, if your wondering what is with all the faces, I discovered textfac.es (Oh noes) along with a unicode chart for the modified "ಠ_ಠ"s

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I'm the only one who could do that. Time to help decorate your house.

@quartata (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yes.
00:57
@BaldBantha Do you know xkcd oneboxes?
I already had xkcd up
I know, I could have done xkcd.com like so:
NOPE
Doesn't work
@BaldBantha I mean if you paste the link to the specific comic instead of the link to the image then we can read the hovertext from here...
If you scroll down you'll see that it's comic #1679
http://xkcd.com/1679/ would work
Like this:
Also makes it full size
are there any terminal plugins that play a sound when the terminal command you're running finishes
@Quill I just use my laptop fan

Q: How can I trigger a notification when a job/process ends?

Utkarsh SinhaThe place I work at has commands that take a long time to execute. Is there a command/utility that I can use to notify me when the command execution is over? It could be a popup window or maybe a little sound.

01:09
@Quill Put a bell character in your prompt
That's a surprisingly unbad idea.
I don't think mine will actually make the noise though.
Yeah, gnome terminal is bugged
There's a fix but I don't remember what it is
correction: everything is bugged
@Geobits as a more specific test, can you see the image in DrGreenEggsandHamDJ's 2 star message?
@trichoplax Yes, both in the transcript and clicking through the link.
01:12
Interesting. I see neither, but plenty of other imgur links seem fine
Hmm. Maybe it just hates you?
My original problem is trying to find out if images show in this question on the other CG
They don't for me, but I don't know if it's a formatting problem or just imgur (for just me...)
They do for me.
That's good to know. Thanks for checking
I'm making some good progress on my crafting game. Right now it has the ability to determine if a given entity fulfills the requirements of a given ingredient (a single slot of a crafting recipe).
01:21
@NathanMerrill the NSA is listening :P
Rats, the jQuery Github repo doesn't have pre-built versions.
I wanted to add it as a submodule
Am I allowed just to add jquery.js directly to my repo? I haven't read their license
01:32
@quartata read their license
ok
It's for my github.io so I'm not exactly thrilled at the prospect of having to gpl my website or something
@BaldBantha why is calvin flying?
It's MIT I see

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

DarthRubikAn idea for a king-of-the-hill challenge: You have a "memory arena" with a fixed size. You have several programs which "reside" in the memory arena (I mean you take the assembly and put it in the arena). The goal of the game is to get another program to access memory outside of this "arena" wh...

@Maltysen It's the Elytra!
They enable you to glide, and it's my favoritest thing about Minecraft right now.
I would have answered that poll differently not long ago, but Helka is worming its way in.
It took quite a while for 'Rusher' to fade away too IIRC :P
Rusher...?
Rainbolt?
When I first arrived in TNB there was a group of people who would say "Rusher! Rusher! Look it's Rusher! Rusher's back!"
Yes
No one celebrates when Rainbolt comes back now. :P
(kidding of course <3 rainbolt)

Cool. I'm definitely going to start calling him Rusherbolt then.

It means that shenanigans have been afoot sometime in the recent past, not necessarily at present.
02:05
haha I saw that

@AlexA. just making sure
@LuisMendo I'm so sorry, I forgot to respond! Yes, you explained it very clearly indeed. Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help!
it actually looks very avocado despite pixel art resolution
Yes, it was immediately identifiable as an avocado
Who made it?
Was it bald banshee or whatever his name is?
02:07
epicTCK yea
epicTCK is Bald Bantha?
No, Bald Bantha is epicTCK.
Why does git always ask me why a merge is necessary? The answer is the same every single time. "I have no idea."

02:08
is there no setting for that?
@AlexA. Even minibits instantly recognized it :/
Git Is shiT
@quartata That is false.

Or Goddamn Idiotic Truckload of shit, depending on your mood.
Also, random OoC quote from the network:
> It'd take a ballsy lawyer to say "You lost the authority to execute me when I murdered you!".
I like Git a lot. It definitely has drawbacks but it's so much better than Subversion.
(Actually don't have anything against git just had to make the joke)
^ ^^
Dang it quartata, now it looks like I'm agreeing with you, not alex.
02:11
Oh you
@AlexA. That's like saying you like bread because it's much better than dog crap.
Wow, crossed out carets carrots look weird.
@Geobits Well... I mean technically that's accurate...
02:12
Just because subversion is centralized doesn't mean it's bad
@AlexA. Sure, but meaningless :P
@AlexA. I actually really do like git. It's just that it confuzzles me.
3 mins ago, by Alex A.
@quartata That is false.
@Geobits Since when does anything I say have meaning? :P
Well, anything is better than CVS, so there's that. And I mean anything. A thumbdrive full of unorganized files is better than CVS.
Walgreens > CVS
02:13
I don't think I was alive in the early 1900s when people used CVS for version control
@Geobits a thumbdrive full of unorganized files is better than a lot of things
@HelkaHomba Hm, Rite Aid or Walgreens?
@AlexA. I used it less than a year ago :(
Oh. :|
Not by choice.
02:14
I figured
I'm sorry for your loss
Decentralized imakes things complicated and is highly unnecessary for most small projects. I'd rather have a version control system that is easy to use than is decentralized
also cvs is terrible
> imakes
Subversion is super not easy to use
You makes what?
I think it's an Apple product
iMakes
02:15
Oh, I thought it was a typo for emacs.
iVocado
2
@HelkaHomba I would pay top dollar for that.
Subversion is very easy to use uwotm8
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Probably requires a proprietary juicer :/
Well yeah, but it's a distant cousin of the open source one.
02:16
I had to use Subversion for my previous job a few years ago. I prefer my current company's version control system: no version control at all.
Hah, been there. It's fun being a rebel for a while, but...
And this is coming from someone who wishes daily that we had version control
Stop one-starring my clever remarks
@Geobits I've been pushing for 3 years now for my group to start using version control. My boss would say, "Yeah I agree it would be good but then people would have to learn something new." (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
@AlexA. Ah yes. This is how I end up working on Java 5 projects >_>
02:19
@HelkaHomba s/1/1+1/
@Geobits 5?!?!
five
Side note: This is the same boss who didn't believe me that Java and JavaScript are unrelated.
OK I'll bite. What exactly did you find annoying about svn?
@Geobits rhymes with the letter S
02:20
@QPaysTaxes Well, Java(Script) isn't really used in my field of work so he can get by without it. He's super smart and a great boss though. He actually left last week. :/
@QPaysTaxes Biostatistics
Yeah
You don't use the almighty JS for biostatistics? Well color me shocked.
There's probably a jQuery plugin for biostats though
Isn't it obvious? Javascript is a programming language () and Java is a type of coffee.
@QPaysTaxes Does it? Or are you just biased?
I didn't know Geobits came in accessory colors
02:22
> rainbow and unicorn avatar
@quartata Sure, but they cost more.
Cool. Send over some swatches and we'll talk about how the whole thing will work together.
Maybe something that pops a little more? Like this.
@QPaysTaxes Just dump Phi on him
@Geobits Mmmm dragon fruit
I'm taking suggestions for tags to add to my game. (current stuff: github.com/PhiNotPi/CraftingGame/blob/master/tags.dat)
02:26
@QPaysTaxes I dunno. Then we're straying into purple territory. If you want to keep it pink I'd avoid that.
Woah. I was browsing through my starred chat messages and I found this one: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/240?m=21587285#21587285
Blast from the past from when I had 666 rep and just used chat for the first time.
@QPaysTaxes for my game?
@QPaysTaxes Hmm. It's a bit light on my screen. A bit orangey too. It's not terrible, but I've seen better.
Now that's pink.
Also, I support using my avatar's color for your paint.
02:29

Q: Zeroes at the end of a factorial

A Nerd - IWrite a program or function that finds the number of zeroes at the end of n! in base 10, where n is an input number. It can be assumed that n is a positive integer, meaning that n! is also an integer. There are no zeroes after a decimal point in n!. Also, it can be assumed that your programming ...
