hmmm, my state is 4.5 hours wide, but more like 7 hours tall
(Utah)
Well, the last round decides the destiny of the Random Walker.
@Sp3000 oh right.. sorry the idea is that you preprocess the dictionary to make the look ups fast
@Sp3000 imagine one dictionary and lots of queries
Oh, so the query is the subset, fixed at 9?
you can of course just check every word in the dictionary if you don't mind taking that much time
@Sp3000 a query is 9 letters
Aaaaand... it's decided. The Random Walker answer is deleted.
16:03
Well I guess the second question is - how much memory :P
@Sp3000 not much more than the dictionary ;)
@El'endiaStarman Well I'm in Florida, so it can go either way. More than three across at the northern end, and definitely more than three north-south.
have you had a "countdown numbers game solver" challenge?
@Geobits Likewise for California (which is not one of the states I meant earlier).
@Lembik Definitely a yes
16:08
ah ok
shame :)
@MartinBüttner 351534, 422552, 544311, 241233, 132145
hmmm, this is bizarre. When I look up delegate count for republican, it shows 996, 565, 153 for the top 3 candidates, with 571 still available. If you add all of them up, you get 2285, so the majority should be 1143.
but the delegate count is 1237
@orlp thanks, I'll update that bullet point later.
@MartinBüttner there are many, many like these btw
@NathanMerrill Are you counting people that were in the running but have since paused their campaign?
16:13
maybe not? are there currently candidates like that?
(that also have delegates)?
Sure. Kasich for one.
A bunch of candidates have dropped out, and some of them definitely got a few delegates (Carson, Rubio, etc).
Kasich is still in the running, and has 153.
yeah, it looks like Rubio still has delegates
this page doesn't show any for carson:
IIRC, I heard someone say that if no GOP candidate gets the majority, then the GOP leadership/Congress/something picks the candidate.
they actually use STV
so there will always be a majority
16:17
Huh, interesting.
which is interesting this race, because there's a big divide between trump haters and lovers
But that doesn't mesh with "1,237 needed for nomination".
what do you mean?
That's for the initial round of the convention voting.
In the GOP convention, the delegates are mandated to vote according to their individual state primaries, but only for the first round. After that, they can vote for whomever.
The national GOP convention.
That's where the 1237 number comes in -- if you've reached 1237 delegate votes after all the primaries, then you'll win the first round of the national convention voting.

@MartinBüttner ^
16:21
@TimmyD So what happens when no candidate reaches that magic 1237 number?
@El'endiaStarman This may be conflating the conventions with the actual Presidential election. The Constitution specifies that if no candidate gets a majority of the electoral college vote (majority, not plurality), then Congress gets to decide by vote.

Q: Briefest code to find vowels and print consonants

@El'endiaStarman They keep voting and horse-trading until someone does.
@El'endiaStarman after the initial round of revoting happens, then standard STV happens. The person with the lowest amount of votes get to revote
@TimmyD That sounds like what my friend was talking about.
@NathanMerrill Source?
16:24
> The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President.
Ooooh, okay, so if no Presidential candidate gets the majority, then Congress votes on the top three.
I am never able to upload non-code files into Gist, and I am never able to upload ZIP files onto Google Drive.
Is there a way to ever persistently upload ZIP files into the Internet?
@zyabin101 I have quite a few zip files on my Drive...
@El'endiaStarman Yep. One vote per state.
@TimmyD I wonder what happens if that also fails to reach a majority.
16:27
@Geobits Ikr. But I am never able to upload ZIP files onto Google Drive.
is the Indiana primary today?
@El'endiaStarman That's Amendment XX, Section 3
@zyabin101 Weird. I tested it just now, and it uploaded mine just fine.
I tested it twice, and both files never appeared in my Drive.
> If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, [...] the Congress may by law provide [...] declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.
16:30
@MartinBüttner there are solutions for n = 5
112435
223451
441532
554213
332154
Basically, they get to just randomly choose someone. Literally anyone who otherwise qualifies (age, natural citizen, etc.).
@Sp3000 maybe your verifier has a bug?
I'm about to take the world's easiest exam (for my computer science class). Open notes, open internet, I have a >100% in the class so far and this exam is worth 10% of my final grade.
Good.. uh... luck? :P
@PhiNotPi a proper exam is hard even with open internet :)
16:32
@orlp that one doesn't work. It doesn't contain 1,4 and it does contain 1,5 twice
@PhiNotPi those exams can be the hardest!
as they can't ask you anything you can look up
@NathanMerrill hrm, guess I'm the one with a bug
Okay, I declare! I am never able to upload ANY ZIP FILE on that Internet!
That sounds more like an ISP/network issue.
My ISP/network is sane.
16:35
So do what a sane person would do. Change the extension before you upload it ;)
.zzz
@NathanMerrill found the bug
Okai, a single Gist is massive, Google Drive disagrees with me, 4shared requires filling a big form for registration, so uploading file on GitHub.
moneys or monies?
@NathanMerrill money
Or rather, a Straw Poll!
16:49
if you several distinct groups of money, its moneys
(or monies)
Wait, I kinda bailed on straw polls.
I can't tell which is worse
I've definitely seen "monies", but not "moneys".
all of the moneys
16:53
monies in the US, either in the UK
Imagine that, the UK is more permissive about using weird spellings :P
:P
Also monkies and donkies
The inaugural vote is for both. :P
and carkies
16:55
@trichoplax :/
@trichoplax and geobits?
Geobits is singular. You must mean Geobitses.
Geobits is plural. Geobit is singular. :P
> They stole it from us. Sneaky little Geobitses.
@ArtOfCode What did I break on QPixel lol
16:58
shruggity shrug
I saw the issue on GitHub about the id thing
What's not working?
Oh, that one.
I blame deleted posts.
I assumed that was me although I don't think I touched that code
@ArtOfCode kek
Are we using Unicorn?
Ok what the fuck, ruby
irb(main):003:0> exit
NameError: undefined local variable or method `ei' for main:Object
	from (irb):3
	from /usr/bin/irb:12:in `<main>'
Did you print something without a newline?
17:02
@MartinBüttner the problem is probably more elegantly stated as an n by n square, where the first and last columns must be a permutation, and all possible combinations without replacement must exist as pairs
@quartata nope
WEBrick is the server
@ArtOfCode OK, fair enough. I think (?) that's thread safe
at least thread safe enough for what I'm doing
@quartata Not a clue. It's the Rails default, so... probably.
Do kernels other than Linux support clone(?
just curious
shrug now you're asking about linux, i know nothing
Thought: If you're spawning threads, they probably spawn outside the context of the web server, and potentially outside the context of the app and ActiveRecord. Just check that you still have access to everything you need in threads.
17:04
@ArtOfCode How's QPixel going?
I see you implemented mod and admin stars.
Why not diamonds? :3
@zyabin101 shrug
@zyabin101 No, both Geobit and Geobits are singular, and separate words. You can say Geobits as plural for Geobit, but not plural for Geobits ;)
@zyabin101 It's configurable with an admin setting
could do that just as easy, it's in site settings now
I didn't want to hardcode it
@ArtOfCode By the way, add a space before whatever character you do
17:05
Yeah, sense makes
Gonna be trying ircd-hybrid locally to see if it has SVSNICK
@Geobits wai ;_;
@quartata Cool. I've got another project to do something to, so I may not be fixing bugs today, but I'm around on #qpixel if you need a hand
@ArtOfCode You have an IRC channel? o_O
@zyabin101 aye, set it up yesterday :P
17:15
Count me OUT! :P
heh
IRC ain't for everyone
I'd try Slack, if that helps.
But note that it is only for collaborators.
And for me, which is strange.
@zyabin101 shrug I'm not fussed, it's basically only there so we can talk dev without screwing this room too much, until it gets fully integrated as site chat anyway
So, should I try Slack?
For what?
I haven't set Slack up for QPixel or anything
17:21
@ArtOfCode I'll try to set it up for you. :)
I use Slack at work and to talk to my guild members outside of game. It's nice.
@Geobits <_<
We have bots hooked up to Slack so we see work item and build notifications from TFS
@zyabin101 We want to use IRC because it's easy to integrate
17:22
Let's try again.
I don't think we can really integrate Slack
@quartata wai ;_;
Also, will you forgive me? I added equality to UGL.
@quartata Eye Macarena.
>_>
@zyabin101 Slack isn't really built for what I want to do. I wanted to make it so that you could login with QPixel accounts
With IRC all I have to do is build a service bot that handles the authentication
With Slack I'd basically be rewriting it
I assume Slack is closed source so definitely couldn't do that
17:25
Okai. Then think I bailed on QPixel ;_;
I just "Forgot" QPixel out of my browser.
kbye
@quartata Will you forgive me? I added equality to UGL. (I can't ping you the conventional way.)
@zyabin101 Heh. QPixel is still a thing, you don't have to use chat on it.
The website isn't going away
@zyabin101 What do you mean you can't ping me the conventional way
@orlp Hm yeah that did occur to me. I didn't realise until I was almost done with writing up that I only had to consider having the repeated digit at the start
@orlp I'm not seeing 14 in there.
And several others
17:35
@MartinBüttner correct, I had a bug
same for the big blob I posted earlier
@MartinBüttner I conjecture that if there are an infinite amount of these sets, a proof will be constructive
I suspect it will have the form "given a set with property X, I can generate a set of length n + 1 that also has property X"
ircd-hybrid doesn't have svsnick without a module
:/
@orlp X being some additional constraint?
yeah
I did some quick experiments that seemed promising but failed
but I think it can be done
@quartata I am ignorant of you, or you of me, and so an easy @mention doesn't work.
Oh hey, first results for the KotH are up :)
17:43
Also, I always thought that Slack is a lot easier to integrate than IRC.
Wow, the results from the individual matches of the KotH vary quite significantly
let me guess: simplebot is failing miserably
Hah, yeah.
@zyabin101 If I was ignoring you I wouldn't see any of your messages
@Everyone Before I even start setting up Slack for some team, I should know: can I make the #general room read-only? And if so, how?
@zyabin101 try checking your ignore list and removing quartata, if they're on it
17:50
@ArtOfCode Removed.
@quartata Will you forgive me?
problemo solvedo
@zyabin101 There's no way I was on it if you could read my messages.
so not sure how that one worked but ok
@ArtOfCode OK, I think I found an IRCd that has what I need
@quartata okey doke - you get to configure this one :P
@zyabin101 Uhh? IRC is about as simple as a chat protocol can get
I don't think it would be possible period for me to use Slack for this without directly modifying it which is a massive pain in the ass for everyone
17:55
It does have a real time messaging API, but that's not what we need...
Oh I'm so fucking stupid
11
svsnick is server-to-server only
Bas
Bas
@quartata It's like you inserted a newline between those 2 sentences on purpose :P
Apparently
> The #general channel cannot be archived.
So I ever avoid Slack. Ever.
(Explaining: archiving a channel (room) makes it read-only.)

Q: Determine If a Challenge is Worth Answering

wnnmawI am a very casual code golfer, and don't often see posts until they show up in the "Hot Network Questions" sidebar over on StackOverflow. Usually, I'm late to the game, and since the only language I know is Python, there is little point in me answering as there are already several Python answer...

Q: Rectangle builder greater area

user3761840I've been trying to solve this coding challenge from Codility for couple weeks. I just got a maximun of 35% completion according to codility. Can somebody please help? Here is my solution in JavaScript: function trimer(pieces){ pieces.sort(function(a, b){ if(a < b) return -1; if(a > ...

is it possible to traverse every edge of a complete graph without going over a path twice?

18:02
When @quartata saying "I'm stupid" yields 2 pages of results
@NathanMerrill yes for odd n
And also for 2
source?
and is there a term of "use every path exactly once"?
You're just looking for an Eulerian path, right?
yep, that's it
Yeah that problem has a simple solution
It's possible when all, or all but 2 vertices have even degree
18:05
Well, make codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/79273/… a comment paradise for only-Pythoners?
R. Kap is not an only-Pythoner.
I've got to start learning some other languages. — R. Kap 3 mins ago
4RUITW'd ////o\\\\
At least I started shifting sand on Gitter.
sheesh, apparently counting the number of eulerian paths on a complete graph (not digraph) is a tough problem
there's a paper that estimates it, but AFAIK, there isn't a formula for it
That's interesting :)
18:21
I want to make a challenge for benedict cumberbatch
where you generate names such as Beetlejuice Cumberbund or Bulbasaur Countryside

Now all I need is a nice profile pic
Is 'you can understand the code' a valid objective criteria for pop-cons? Challenge in question
Right, much better
@BassdropCumberwubwubwub NOOOOO!
18:32
I dislike Bassdrop Cumberwubwubwub! yells NOOOOO!
@zyabin101 Look on the bright side, now all you need to do is mention me to bypass the minimal message length
@muddyfish That seems inherently subjective :-/
@muddyfish no. The problem with "code clarity" is the same as "funniest code" or "most obfuscated code"
OK. Could you suggest another criteria that I could use?
code-golf
18:36
It was suggested to use pop-con instead
But that was back in September
@muddyfish Downgoat's point is valid, but popularity contest for sake of code-clarity is a bad popcon
Why do you need code-clarity as an explicit measuring device? Users gonna vote how they vote anyway.
Yeah. I can't think of what else to score it by that's objective
Apart from code-golf
@muddyfish he was specifically saying that the users would vote based on similarity of image to output
18:41
hello @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm chatting in the AvocadOS Gitter room.
But doesn't that fall for the same problem?
I don't think so. You're using humans to judge a particular aspect, as opposed to "Which one's the coolest"
@muddyfish That suggestion was made due to there being difficulty in narrowing down what counts as correct output. If you have dealt with that difficulty then it doesn't need to be a popularity contest
yeah, I still think it should be code-golf
18:46
Whether a popularity contest is on topic is decided on a case by case basis, based on popularity
what?
popularity contests are on topic based on popularity?
Poor joke...
oh ok. :)
although, I think you do have a point that unpopular, on-topic popcons have a huge chance of getting closed
18:48
I agree golf seems to fit this one best if there isn't a specific need for human judgement (which there doesn't seem to be)
I ve changed it again to code-golf. I might even post it all soon
@NathanMerrill Yes it was a joke with a grain of truth...
@muddyfish It might help to have a few test images and their outputs, to exclude any alternative interpretations of what you mean
For example, preserving aspect ratio is not possible in all cases, so a test case where the aspect ratio is altered by rounding up/down would be good. Specify which way must be used in the spec too.
@trichoplax I'll do that when I'm not putting off doing a past paper
18:54
Seems like a great way to put off doing a past paper to me...
Yeah but I should really do it at some point
Do we have a challenge based on the set theoretic ordering of positive integers?
@muddyfish eyyy so am I
I've already put it off for 3 hours
I get that though - if I'm putting off one important thing, it forces me to put off all unimportant things even if they wouldn't take much time
If you're doing the paper to time then just set an alarm and start. Starting is the hard bit...
I have started it. I'm an hour in but I paused it to eat food
18:57
Ah...
Now I'm running the timer but not doing the test (quickly)
In that case I'll add comments to the sandbox instead so you can pick them up later... :)
Go go go!
19:17
> Computers need people
Good job, Gitter. :P
and people need computers
Almost a 50-byte golf ... can't tell if I should be happy that I could trim it down so much, or sad that I posted such ungolfed code in the first place. :-/
19:35
I'm being threatened :D
IE6 was great and did all things.
Except that.
And that.
Aaaaand that.
Ahahaha, it most definitely didn't do that.
@TimmyD Oh, whoops, did you say something?
...AJAX, what?
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Which site?
@zyabin101 coderwall.com
19:41
Hey @QPaysTaxes, @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ - stage.artofcode.co.uk/questions/67
No "About" section for QPixel :(
@ArtOfCode at least you've mostly fixed the time problems
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I was more notifying you about Solver's account being murdered once again, since he asked :P
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I'm threatened! :D
Yup, one boxes don't work for Coderwall.
@Downgoat @MarsUltor and other GitHub users: GitHub import now allows (paid) importing of large files.
@ArtOfCode I know :P
19:54
This new ability is powered by Git LFS, so it is paid. And you are required to use Git LFS for importing large files, or else these will be completely omitted from the result repository.
