@randomra no that can't work. You cannot repeat an empty pattern arbitrarily often. The regex engine will short-circuit that once the minimum number of matches (or 1 whichever is more) to satisfy the quantifier had been found (this is actually necessary to prevent infinite loops in much simpler situations).

So you'll actually have to match a character with each pop, like (?=(?<-1>.)*) but of course that requires that there is a sufficient number of characters in the string.
