Challenge has started

@TanMath Well the code is online, and this looks promising. The point is that Mego can't be expected to respond to every single question about the language.

@Calvin'sHobbies i use that often... but docs is still very necessary..
I will then ask everybody here... if there is a stack like [x,i,i] and i want i and x to be switched to have [i,x,i] how can i do that?

@
Rotate.
Oh wait what language is this?

Seriously

12:10 AM
I believe ( is the rotate operator there.
Man, Mego's cheating and going into Extended ASCII chars
little cheat

there is (, ), and @
They all rotate, which one do I use?
maybe I should try using them...

Q: Integer Complexity

The TurtleYour task is to write a program that, given input n, would output the integer complexity (along with the equation) of all the numbers 1 through n in order. The shortest program in bytes wins. The integer complexity of a natural number n is the least number of "ones" needed to represent that numb...

@NewMainPosts This has been there for a long time.

@Calvin'sHobbies 17 bytes. Could be better.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

El'endia StarmanPi, continued The task: generate an arbitrarily precise rational approximation to pi by using a continued fraction. One way to calculate pi is by using this continued fraction (from Wikipedia): The first few approximations can be calculated as follows: You should not use this partic...

Aaand posted at 00:59:25!

@NewSandboxedPosts "You should not use this particular continued fraction." I see a "should not", but can I?

@Sp3000 I don't think you can, actually.
You get that particular continued fraction by starting with pi and working backwards, in a sense.
Hmm.

1:01 AM
Well I dunno if Mathematica could handle it because it treats pi symbolically or something

Actually, you can, but you'd have to calculate pi to arbitrary precision first, then get the continued fraction, then get the fractional approximations.
@Sp3000 Hmm. I'm leaning against forbidding use of the example continued fraction in languages that can calculate pi to sufficient precision.
I just think it'd be longer to do it that way.

I think it'd be better to outright forbid it, tbh

Okay, that's fine by me too.
Yeah, changed it from "should not" to "may not".
Forbidding it fits better with the spirit of the challenge, which is to calculate pi from scratch.

:)

π = 2*(π/2)

1:08 AM
I remember reading an amusing webpage or something that had bad approximations to pi that used pi. :P

btw fun fact, here's what I was doing yesterday: link

@Sp3000 ....so...I beat you to posting a Sandbox on the idea? :P

Anonymous
@AlexA. pro math right there

It's kinda freaky that you were playing with that only yesterday.

1:12 AM
@Mego Damn right B)

No, I just genuinely think that the standard continued fraction should be banned. So I wouldn't have used it anyway (and it wouldn't have been any shorter)
In fact, APL/J/stuff seem to have the best bet for this one I think

stuff language?

I challenge this room to go the entirety of the UTC day of November 17th, 2015 without starring anything

@El'endiaStarman :D (We learned about that a little while back, because we did cellular respiration and photosynthesis separately)

Ok, now probably failure

@Mego Well, to be honest, I forgot about the challenge...

@Doorknob My grandpa was mad that my parents named me Alexander. His exact words were "Alexander the Great slaughtered my people!"

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no, that was a long time ago :P

@Doorknob Phooey.

Now the challenge is for UTC Nov 18 2015

@Mego yeah good luck with that :P

@Mego 2015? Because there are weeks with no messages in the ancient days of PPCG

Q: Integer Complexity

The TurtleYour task is to write a program that, on input n, outputs the minimal expression of each number 1 through n in order. The shortest program in bytes wins. A minimal expression combines 1's with addition and multiplication to result in the given number, using as few 1's as possible. For example, ...

There's got a be an easy way to do this in Mathematica

Anonymous
1:24 AM
A very small set of names can get a score of 0 in Seriously

Anonymous
Specifically, they need to meet the following conditions:

Oh, wait a minute.

@quartata ComputeTheIntegerComplexityOfTheInputToThisVerboselyNamedFunction[]

It's more complicated than I thought.

@Mego ... how could the empty program have multiple possible outputs?

1:25 AM
@Sp3000 I actually read through and figured out what every command does! I'm so proud of myself... :P

oh wait you're talking about Calvin's rule change thingy

I thought it would just be prime factorizing and then turning the numbers into sums of 1.

:) nice

Anonymous
@Doorknob Score of 0 meaning program length == name length

But it isn't that easy...

1:25 AM
@Doorknob if (length(program) == 0) { cat(sample.int(10)) }

@Doorknob I think they fixed the name change rule! I was gonna change my name to CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC‌CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC for Conor's mini challenge but I can't since I quickly changed/unchanged my name yesterday.

@Calvin'sHobbies ?

@Calvin'sHobbies haha. Got two other network sites that you can make use of?

What challenge is this?

7 mins ago, by Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'Bʀɪᴇɴ
Mini-challenge output your full username.

1:26 AM
@Doorknob Oh.

Anonymous
1. Contain a single "Q"
2. All characters in the username prior to the Q and after the first `.` after the Q are NOPs with an empty stack
3. All characters after the Q but before the next `.` (if there is one; else EOF) are NOPs with a stack containing a single string

@Doorknob I've tried it on multiple sites, ones I didn't use before. Not working

@Calvin'sHobbies ;(

You know, xnor and I tried the username thing ages ago in an attempt to find who would win. There's a lot of numbers only usernames out there :P

Well, at least I didn't accidentally end up as CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC‌CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC for a month

Anonymous
1:28 AM
Ooh true, number-only usernames would also get a 0 in Seriously. The code is just the number with its digits reversed

My username is too short to compress.
æquÂôta` in TeaScript is less chars but more bytes
stop it markdown
There we go.

@Sp3000 Didn't know names could be pure numbers

Earlier, I drove to the store for a couple groceries. On the way, I had an idea for a challenge. I forgot it, however, but just now remembered. How? By remembering the drive to the store! :P

@Calvin'sHobbies Names can be anything but diamonds

btw Calvin did you like my answer to your Scrabble minichallenge :D

@AlexA. No, they can't have some punctuation like !

1:31 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Names can be anything but diamonds and some punctuation like !

@Sp3000 Yeah. It got me wondering if there are properly cyclic word solutions

... on it

Okay, have we had a challenge based on this?

Someone should answer the Scrabble minichallenge in J.
That way you can construct your verbs with a verb

> 1. Every second, a gun shoots a bullet along a straight line.
> 2. Each bullet has a random speed between 0 and 1.
> 3. Bullets do not slow down; but if two bullets collide, both of them are annihilated.
> 4. The gun stops shooting after 10 bullets have been fired.

1:33 AM
verbception

@Sp3000 There's sender and enders

Also 17: link

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman VTC as unclear, what distribution is used for the speeds?

@Mego I won't be making it random.

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman I was having a giggle

1:37 AM
Input will have a list of 1-10 (or n) numbers, and the task will be to determine whether all bullets are destroyed.

Anonymous
That wouldn't be that hard to do, actually

Yeah, but is it a duplicate? (I think it's probably not, but I'm unsure how to search for it.)

@Sp3000 nice

It's pretty similar to a parentheses-matching problem, but the varying speed changes things, I think?

@El'endiaStarman Then probably no

Anonymous
1:38 AM
Assuming that the distribution of the inputs is discrete, there is a maximum distance at which two bullets would annihilate

As in every input is distinct?

Anonymous
So start with a list of speeds and a list of positions

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman As in the inputs are all integers, or all IEEE 754 floats

Uh-huh, okay.

Anonymous
1:40 AM
Run the simulation out to that distance, check if the list of positions is sorted

@Calvin'sHobbies 15 bytes, nailed it

@Sp3000 Woo!
@Sp3000 To Sp, the ablest stable table.

Apparently stinge isn't valid, or ingest/tinges would have worked
The other valid one I have here is stripe/ripest/tripes

Q: Draw a randomly generated piece of grass

TheProWolfPcGamesAs my first post I would like to ask this, draw a randomly generated piece of grass with the least amount of bytes. Rules: 1: code golf, shortest code wins. 2: factors that must be random are length, height, and curve. 3: can be typographical or drawn. 4: color is not required. Example of t...

It happened recently on SciFi

Q: Why was a moderator on our Stack asked to step down?

SQBAs we all know by now, Richard is stepping down as a moderator for this Stack. As Richard notes both in his announcement and in chat, he was asked to step down by a community manager. After speaking with the powers-that-be, I have been offered a stark choice; jump ship or get pushed. and ...

@AlexA. Did Doorknob tape your eyelids open and make you memorize this before becoming a mod?

1:54 AM
Doorknob taped my eyelids open, but for other reasons.

I'm content then.

But I did read that when I became a mod. It was one of the reading materials sent to me by one of the CMs.

Hello all!

Same. Though that was four years ago, so it was in a different format (at least in appearance).
