11:00 PM
@Maltysen TNB = The Nineteenth Byte?

@AlexA. County. We lived in neighboring counties of North Carolina.

@AlexA. yeah

@El'endiaStarman Right, sorry. Can't read.
Yeah, the King County school system, where I've always attended, is supposedly good.

@AlexA. Haha, it's no problem. I still have a bit of trouble distinguishing country and county, and I remember being really confused about the distinction many years ago. :P

11:01 PM
:P
@Maltysen Oh right, this

@AlexA. its about nerds being unpopular, but if you keep on reading
@AlexA. there was also this quote by some famous guy, "I tried to not let education interfere with my learning"

@El'endiaStarman Would you have any concerns over a lack of social development and exposure?

@HelkaHomba Blue Fenugreek if you need something non-fictional. Although dried it seems it's nearer green

@AlexA. There are homeschool groups where homeschooled kids in any given area hang out together.

Oh that's neat!

11:03 PM
Also, I didn't develop very much socially despite being in public schools... :P

@AlexA. I wouldn't. I hung out with adults a lot when I was growing up and I think that made me more mature.
And kids my age also.

Yeah, I could see that.

A friend/mentor of mine growing up helped me a lot because he treated me like an adult and gave me responsibilities, and I learned a lot of things from him.

That's great!

@HelkaHomba Blue pea flower if you want to dye things blue but I'm not sure if it comes as a powder

11:06 PM
I guess a lot of my curiosity comes from not knowing a whole lot about homeschooling. Growing up I had a friend who was taken out of public school to be homeschooled so he could get a more religious-focused education, but he's the only person I've known who was homeschooled.

The only person you've known?
What am I, chopped liver?

Religion is probably a pretty common reason for being homeschooled. Understandably.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Haha I mean in my schooling years

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ No, you're ham.

11:07 PM
@El'endiaStarman I bet most people who went to public (or private) school would say that being forced to work and socialize with many different types of people was just as important an experience as learning subject matter. This is why I wouldn't homeschool my kids.

Well, green eggs and ham, really...

@trichoplax Strange..but thanks :)

@El'endiaStarman I don't know, I guess I assumed that one could get a secular, general education in school and get religious education on the Sabbath or Sundays or whatever the person's religion dictates.

@HelkaHomba The only other thing that came up was Yahoo answers, which was unsurprisingly unhelpful

What else is new :P

11:09 PM
haha

:)
@HelkaHomba Out of interest, cooking or challenge...?

@trichoplax I was just randomly thinking about different colored spices and seeing if a rainbow could be made.

@HelkaHomba there's curacao syrup, but it's for making drinks, not cooking

@AlexA. that's what my parents are doing to me, and i'm (without telling them) agnostic, so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

11:11 PM
@AlexA. Well, there's also that there are things being taught in public school that are (ostensibly) against the parents' religion. Would you keep your child in a school that taught them lies? Aside from that, depending on one's religion and/or beliefs, religious education shouldn't only be a one-day-per-week thing. There's a well known saying: "Going to church on Sundays doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car."

Quick, think of sumac purple

@Maltysen Haha XD nice

@Maltysen If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

@El'endiaStarman Wait, I'm not a car? :(

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ 15

11:12 PM
@Maltysen you did not just monospace that shrug

@AlexA. hahaha :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ i monospace all my shrugs so I don't have to escape my backslashes

@El'endiaStarman I guess that means I can leave the garage now. :P

¯\¯\/_ツ(_)

11:13 PM
@El'endiaStarman What's taught in public school that religious folk would consider to be lies? o_O

Evolution, for a lot of (not all) religious people.

Oh right

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ islam is actually kinda weird on evolution

@AlexA. Evolution is a big one. (Disclaimer: I do take evolution to be fact, so far as such a thing is possible in science.)

@AlexA. Well, I know for one fact that public school does not discourage theft

11:14 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Um what?

wat

they believe that god placed humans into the world so it looks like they evolved

@El'endiaStarman well, often there are things being taught in public school that are against the parents' beliefs, but the things taught in public school are supported by hard evidence whereas those beliefs are supported by peculiar interpretations of ancient books; homeschooling can sometimes be a form of shielding the kids from reality, which is a bad thing

Homosexuality and LBGTQIA/etc stuff in general as well.

11:15 PM
@Maltysen wat?

@El'endiaStarman omigosh when did that acronym get so long
What is IA?!

> Contemporary Islamic scholar Yasir Qadhi believes that the idea that humans evolved is against the Quran, but says that Allah may have placed humanity perfectly into an evolutionary pattern to give the appearance of human evolution.

@aditsu I agree. I'm just pointing out the reasoning.

^^ from google

@Maltysen Huh. TIL.

11:15 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ and Q

@Maltysen Yeah, but you said "Islam is weird on islam"

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Haha, that's the more-inclusive version. Q is queer, I is intersex, and A is allies asexual.

@Maltysen Q is queergender

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ kill me

@El'endiaStarman o_o I still don't know what those are

11:16 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The revision does not make it any more accurate

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Allies are just anyone who supports the others.

@El'endiaStarman Oh - I thought that might be asexual. That still not in there?

@trichoplax Oh yeah, forgot about asexual.

Yeah, according to google it is asexual.
Not allies.

@AlexA. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My friend goes to public school and stole something from a fellow student. When that student confronted teachers, nothing was done, even the item in question had the former student's name on it.

11:17 PM
@trichoplax what like budding? do humans do that?

Okay, correcting...

@El'endiaStarman I still don't know what I means

@Maltysen Not yet, but give it a few decades...

@El'endiaStarman I'd call it very close-minded thinking for someone to not allow their kids to be part of the generation they were born into. New ideas, social or scientific, have been part of every new generation for centuries. (I'm not blaming you, just saying.)

@Maltysen Haha, no, not quite. It just means someone who has zero desire for sex and zero sexual attraction to anyone.

11:17 PM
Installing java installs malware/adware. What the fuck Oracle?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Okay, that's one weird and unfortunate example. I certainly wouldn't extrapolate to say that public schooling doesn't discourage theft.
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I thought Java was the malware

@AlexA. That's one example of a lot I have :P
I hate public school. I lost my wallet there

@HelkaHomba Close-mindedness has been a problem for a loooong time. You can see instances of Jesus lashing out at the Pharisees for it throughout the Gospels.

@Maltysen hahaha I lol'd at this

ROASTE
D

11:19 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It's difficult having a large number of children in a small space, some of whom are OK with stealing, and some of whom are OK with labeling the stolen items with their own name...

@trichoplax True enough. I still don't like PS

@Maltysen This is a position held by some Christians. I think it's a terrible position. (Derisively called Last Thursdayism by opponents.)

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Nor me - just pointing out the difficulty.

@trichoplax gotcha

11:20 PM
@El'endiaStarman o_o that's a name I've never heard before

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Wait, were/are you homeschooled?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Never.
My bro is, but that's it.

So you went/go to public school, but just really dislike it?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ If God created humans and the whole universe ~6000 years ago but made everything look like it was millions and billions of years old, then what's to say that He didn't do the same last Thursday?

11:22 PM
@El'endiaStarman Oh, "last thursdayism", gotcha. I thought the world was made this morning tho. ;)

@El'endiaStarman Because then he would have also had to give us fake memories.

@El'endiaStarman I used to wonder similarly whether the light from distant stars had been placed mid journey rather than actually starting at the stars

@El'endiaStarman well, this case is talking specifically about evolution, muslims don't believe in young earth, but I get your point

@El'endiaStarman how do you like dem 5 pings

11:24 PM
@Maltysen ...so, Muslims believe in an old Earth, and even that evolution happened, but not that humans specifically evolved? That's interesting.

I really need a cheatsheet containing peoples beliefs/ages/worldviews >_> in this room

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ It would have almost as many entries as there are people...

@El'endiaStarman that's what my (limited) understanding is

@trichoplax Yeah. That's what I was referring to :P

11:25 PM
This chatroom confirms that subcultures are nested fractally

@trichoplax Yeah, that's part of the "Last Thursdayism" position.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ The majority of solipsists are wrong

@trichoplax There is no majority--only one.

Would a challenge for drawing this be too similar to this?

Personally I'm completely OK with all forms of sexuality even if it would seem weird to most people

11:27 PM
A piece of support for the position is that Adam and Eve were created with the appearance of age. I think that particular twist is interesting.
@muddyfish I would imagine that most people in here are, especially the older ones.

@HelkaHomba Yes

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That's what I mean - only a maximum of one can be right...

@El'endiaStarman I second this

@trichoplax :D
@muddyfish "Sexuality" as in orientation, or as in the act of having sex?

11:28 PM
relevant to religion, gif pronunciation, editors, peanut butter, golfing languages and everything else:

@muddyfish I would say that child sex is abhorrent :P but yeah
@Maltysen I don't think I know what that is, nor do I want to know.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ wow, ok, get out of my head :p

11:30 PM
@aditsu Vim and smooth peanut butter forever!!

Man, TNB has been interesting today. Homeschool, Evolution, Solipsism, and child sex.

I was hoping we'd gloss right by the mention of child sex. :/

@aditsu :P I haven't started learning CJam yet, so I'm not too far in.

What will be the next big social issues after LGBT stuff and internet privacy? I can only think of assisted suicide (which is legal in some states and perhaps just too uncommon to be a national issue) and designer babies/cloning.

I can't hold the o key on this mobile keyboard :(

@muddyfish #tragedy

@HelkaHomba Marijuana?

11:33 PM
@HelkaHomba wtf is a designer baby

@HelkaHomba Public nudity might be one. Legal in many/most places in the US, still mostly socially unacceptable.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Already legal in 3 US states and I'm sure more will follow

3? What's the 3rd? CO, WA and ??

@AlexA. a baby with specific genetic traits inserted into it

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Oregon

11:34 PM
I think it would be a little strange having nakef people on the streets

Wait not CA?

The voters approved it but it hasn't happened yet

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I suppose. Though I suspect it will less restricted soon enough like Alex said

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Nope

Oh. I didn't know that. Although TBF, that's not really a social issue.

11:35 PM
@AlexA. That's honestly surprising

@HelkaHomba Drug assisted learning? The rights of digital persons? DNA dependent tax brackets?

ok now it's really down

Abortion is a pretty big social issue right now, and as we get better at diagnosing problems in fetuses/babies, the debate might intensify.

Probably another one is the "Wage gap"

Challenge: You are given a base 10 number. Starting with base 10 and counting down to base 2, remove any digits of the number which are not in the base (for example, 894 base 10 would become 84 base 9 which would become 4 base 8) then print the largest prime factor (in decimal) of the number. If the number is truncated to 0 or 1 the program should end. Output can

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ California is overall a more socially conservative state than its two northern neighbors. (Though I would have imagined CA legalizing it before OR.)

Oh, and we're getting better at keeping babies alive outside of the womb earlier and earlier.

I thought abortion was accepted practically everywhere

@Doorknob NO FEET BOT IS BORK

11:36 PM
@muddyfish Half the US is vehemently opposed to it, it seems.

@muddyfish Legal? Yes. Accepted? Not totally.

@muddyfish Not really. Lots of people are extremely against it.

@El'endiaStarman Though that debate has been running strong for decades. I'm looking for totally new/unexplored issues

But I always thought the US had some strange ideas ;)

@muddyfish wait I have to ask: are you a nice person? sorry for the totally random question

I'm not saying we don't have strange ideas

Actually, artificial consciousness will be an interesting thing. If we can simulate consciousness with a machine, that's huge news. If we can't, that's huge news too.

@HelkaHomba mind privacy

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Woot, they're diverging again!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ it makes me feel better telling myself that ;)

Hm, okay.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ BAI
