10:00 PM
@Dennis Random

@quartata No, it does not.

@Dennis That sucks.

@quartata There's a lot of stuff Python doesn't have. At least not out of the box...
$[ is deprecated by the way.

@QPaysTaxes bai

@Dennis Really?

10:02 PM
Yup.

> Deprecated in Perl v5.12.0.

My camel book just says it's discouraged not deprecated
Then again my copy of the camel book is from like 1998 so I'm not surprised it's a little out of date...

> a little

Well, Perl hasn't changed a whole lot since the 90s

10:07 PM
What did $[ do?

First index of an array

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ SyntaxError: Unexpected Token[

$[ = 1 makes arrays 1-indexed
$[ = 0 makes them 0-indexed

It's a leftover from awk.

10:08 PM
I like that idea, good for golfing

lot of special variables in Perl were added so that awk scripts were easy to port
?

keyboard misfire

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ KeyboardFire

APL has that too. ⎕IO←x makes arrays x-indexed.

@quartata NotDoorknob

haha! No one has cracked my vim answer yet!

Anyone who says "1" is a monster.

>_>
whistles

Unless they are a bird.

10:26 PM
For golfing, most definitely 1. Having a falsy index at the beginning has burned me so many times...
Otherwise, I don't have a strong preference.

@Dennis Can you pull MATL whenever you have a minute?
I voted 1. Matlab has made me a monster

Done.

@Dennis Thank you! FPITW again :-)

@LuisMendo Nooooo...

@LuisMendo :P

10:29 PM
I actually like both but I voted 0

All of the languages I know well are 1-based

I'm 0 all the way. Code Jam kept on throwing me off

Julia is 1-based?

Yes

How little I care about this reminded me of a webcomic.

10:30 PM
XD

@Dennis Hahaha. Very good!
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Hard "g" here. Spanish influence I guess, it's more natural to us

Whoever voted soft "g", like in "giraffe": ಠ_ಠ

That would be me.

Yay, I'm not alone anymore!

10:31 PM
It's a picture, not a peanut butter

it starts with the word "graphic"

Wait, which one is hard and which is soft?

which is said with a hard g

Soft is like 'j'

@LuisMendo peanut butter is soft

10:32 PM
There's zhif, jif, and g`if

Oh god, soft g is winning?

Who the hell says zhif?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ I change my name from soft g to hard g

So hard is like "get". Then I voted what I meant

Yes

10:32 PM
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ My friend.

Soft g in GIF? I thought we were friends.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Your friend is stranzhe.

@Maltysen But standard butter is softer :-)

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ yeah

@LuisMendo I was talking about the brand of peanut butter called JIF

10:33 PM
@Downgoat Downjoat.

Ugh people actually voted for soft g

See, I knew @LuisMendo and I were meant to be best friends. He prefers 1-based arrays and pronounces GIF with a hard g.
That's all I really look for in a friend.

@AlexA. And Julia looks a lo like Matlab :-D

:D

@quartata Which is, objectively, the right option. Inventor's choice.
5

10:34 PM
Hahaha. You're not too demanding

Actually the second programming language I ever used was Matlab.

My second was python

@AlexA. Is it really similar to Julia? That's the impression I get from your answers

/me is a youngin'

10:35 PM
augh soft g is winning

oh no /me

@Maltysen Ooooh. I lack the cultural reference then :-)

@LuisMendo It's been quite a while since I've used Matlab so I don't remember it all that well, but Julia's syntax is partly inspired by that of Matlab.

Not much peanunt butter in Spain

Julia docs actually have a page about the differences docs.julialang.org/en/release-0.4/manual/noteworthy-differences

10:35 PM
@LockOpeners Oh rly?

and differences from other langs
but matlab is at the top

@LockOpeners Very nice, thanks!

> clichés

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no "zhif", nope, never, stop writing crap like that, that would be "ze hif"

10:37 PM

@aditsu o_O? That's how its written

maybe in Chinese :p

Jeez, that onebox was way larger than I was expecting.

@Doorknob Clearly he meant s/clichéd/Stack/
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ The One Box to rule them all

@AlexA. no hover over the onebox :P

10:38 PM
I know
I just like to think he meant "Derailing Stack Exchanges"
YES! Hard g is gaining ground against soft g in the polls!

Re: GIFs

lol

Meanwhile 1-based indexing is getting ROASTE D.

I feel like I'm missing something there.

@Dennis .avi is below gif

10:40 PM
0 based indexing is best

@Dennis You'd think PDF would be on par with TeX given that PDFs are often generated by TeX...

except when I have to do array[i+1]

> often

but that's okay

@AlexA. But not always.

10:41 PM
True that

@AlexA. But Excel can generate pfd's too. Ew

.JPEG is below .jpeg

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ WAIT no I meant choice not name

@Doorknob what would the file extension for a doorknob be

My choice is g as in goat

10:42 PM
@Downgoat Oh, I get it.
I'm also very disappointed in you.

@AlexA. .doorknob
4
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ why

heh

@Doorknob ಠ_ಠ 4 letters or fewer

@AlexA. why

10:43 PM
Because is better

@AlexA. why

Because is best

why

@AlexA. Short extensions are for backwards compatibility with DOS.

10:43 PM
.best

@Downgoat Because I like getting in pointless arguments about how to pronounce acronyms with goats on the internet.

Don't we all

Isn't that what the internet is for?
@Downgoat Haha, done.

@Dennis Doesn't make them not better

thanks

@AlexA. I use .bubblegum. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

^^ true story for me

The title offends me.

What is true.s?

Americans like to get offended

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Add it to the list.

@AlexA. Assembly for my implementation of coreutil's true.

@Dennis What is coreutil's true

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ s/ from any country//

10:48 PM
@AlexA. a program that does nothing and returns success

@Doorknob Baller

@AlexA. It returns true.

false, according to its manpage, "do[es] nothing, unsuccessfully"

hahaha

sickrage
Sick rage, bro
(seen while updating Homebrew stuff)
I know at least several people in here were or are homeschooled. If those folks don't mind sharing, I'd be interested to hear why they were homeschooled rather than attending a public, private, or charter school.

10:53 PM
@muddyfish As long as it works... :)

@AlexA. Several? I only know of one. (myself)

I know at least one other

@AlexA. My brother is homeschooled because he has aspergers

@AlexA. I wasn't, but my best friend and fiancée were, and I'm thinking I'll probably homeschool the kids I eventually have.

@El'endiaStarman What would be your reasoning for that?

10:55 PM
So saying "I know several people..." You're really just trying to get me and one other user to explain? :P

No, I figured there are more
And you don't have to explain; no one has to. I'm just curious.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ is

Can anyone think of a blue spice or cooking powder? (whether you were homeschooled or not)

@AlexA. Why are you wondering?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Just curious. I heard on the radio the other day that homeschooling is becoming more popular in the US and I wondered why.

10:58 PM
@AlexA. because the public school system is $h!t

@AlexA. Some of it will probably depend on where we end up raising our kids. My nephew and niece go to a Montessori school, which would probably be fine for me. The crucial aspect is that if you homeschool (and do it well), your kids will get a far better education than public-schooled kids. My best friend once said that I basically got the best of both words. I was public schooled, but my parents and brothers were really good about encouraging learning at home.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I attended public school from kindergarten through university and I didn't have any issues with it.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That was one of the big reasons my best friend was homeschooled. The school system in his county was terrible.

10:59 PM
@El'endiaStarman Ahh

@HelkaHomba Melange?

@AlexA. there was this essay on TNB about the school system just being a place for adults to keep kids
sooooo true

The school system in my county, a neighboring county, was great.
