Where is everyone?

Hello, @undergroundmonorail

1:32 PM
i want to go get food but my phone is dead

@aditsu Are you intending to make :<whitespace> and .<whitespace> ever do something? If not it would probably be helpful for and if whitespace would just be ignored after those. Same question for e and m and f actually, I guess.
@undergroundmonorail that's good though, right? more food for you!

@MartinBüttner i don't want to go without my phone because then i might be alone with my thoughts and i can't think of anything more terrifying

Would any of you friendly feedbackers mind feeding some feedback back to me about meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/7439/8478 ?

1:48 PM
@MartinBüttner Is don't post it yet, I've already hit the rep cap considered good feedback?

:(

@MartinBüttner What do you have in mind with "small native integer size"?

@Dennis How about I downvote one of your answers now, then undo the downvote tomorrow so you get the rep transferred to a different day? Disclaimer: May forget to accidentally undo
:D

1:50 PM
@feersum bytes (thinking of some esolangs...) ... I should probably put a lower limit on this too though, since some languages are bit-based

@Sp3000 Undownvotes would actually cost me rep if they had been cancelled out.
Nov 1 at 0:58, by Dennis
I got downvoted on Oct 6 and Oct 27. I hit the rep cap later those days, so I didn't lose any rep from the downvotes.
Both downvotes got reversed on Oct 28, but I hit the rep cap that day as well, so I didn't gain any rep from the undownvotes.
Today, my rep got recalculated. The system decided none of this was fair and made the original downvotes count as -2 each.
So by all means, forget to undo. :)

@feersum edited

@Dennis Ah yes, I remember that. Can I accept an answer, have you hit rep cap then unaccept? Does that work too? >:D

accepted answers don't count towards the rep cap

Ah, that'll explain the 215 from the other day then

1:59 PM
@Sp3000 If you feel like experimenting, award me a +500 bounty and try unawarding it. :D

Sure, which question?

Any question will do. You know, for science. :D

Done.
Oh shoot, did you say "me"? I'm so sorry, I missed that part.

:D
@Dennis I guess you've got 7 days to beat my B&C cat now

(I was going to award it via unusable language, but I felt like this was more appropriate)

2:07 PM
well, thanks a lot, that's a massive bounty :) (although I can't tell whether I'd rather have the 500 rep or see Dennis beat my solution)

It's funny hearing you calling it massive :P
Seriously though, if it doesn't get beaten, you deserve 500 for inventing it anyway, and I'd chuck another one on

well it would account for 28% of all the bounty rep I've ever earned ;) (I've only got one 500-bounty so far)

Oh... I didn't realise you could view just bounty rep via profile

@Sp3000 must.... resist....

Aw come on, get your mind out of the rain gutter

2:13 PM
I'm a grown man I do what I want

Q: Enumerating N-Dimensional Vectors

Martin BüttnerGiven a positive integer k > 1 and a non-negative integer i, generate a k-tuple (or k-dimensional vector) of non-negative integers. For every k, the map from ℕ to ℕk, must be bijective. That is, every input i should produce a different tuple, and every possible tuple must be produced by some inpu...

2:30 PM
How is that I just posted two ~50 vote questions yet @DigitalTrauma has surpassed me in rep D:
#HighRepProblems

Because there's 20+ vote answers to match?

@NewMainPosts @MartinBüttner Why not include the k = 1 case? The map is of course obvious but it would make the question more "complete" in my mind
@Sp3000 Shhhh...

@Calvin'sHobbies It's an uninteresting and annoying edge case to take into account. Both of my reference solutions had to special-case it without adding anything interesting to them.

I'm back.

2:46 PM
@SuperJedi224 We we're worried.

Dennis' returns n fine, which is nice :)

@PhiNotPi is socnet working yet?

no, not really, I just spent some time trying to CSS-together part of a page: socnet-phinotpi.rhcloud.com/home.pl

Sorry,
rhcloud.com
is not currently accessible because it is categorized as security.nettools.

@PhiNotPi I could do "daily programming puzzles" for your site if you share the ad profits ;)

@PhiNotPi So many tabs...

That's actually a separate project

My browser has this thing called "recently closed". Also hotkeys like ctrl+w to close tab, ctrl+shit+t to bring it back. I can't think of a good reason to have so many tabs open.

is it chrome?

3:03 PM
Yes

@Calvin'sHobbies The site's barely a couple days old and you want me to put ads on it already?

no ads ;(
I want to do something productive today but i have no idea what to do

make a website?

for what?

Just think of something. I chose social networking.

"here be python"

@PhiNotPi Yeah, and what 's your NASDAQ ticker symbol gonna be? PHINPI?

@PhiNotPi Even on the html files...
Oh, is "Here be python" the comment on the most recent changeset that affected those files?

@Calvin'sHobbies I've been looking into getting a domain name. It appears phinotpi.com is available.

oo shiny

3:13 PM
rainbolt.com is registered with Network Solutions :(

Rainbolt is still a pretty badass last name

rainbolt.org looks like a spiral notebook...

@Rainbolt So it does.

@Calvin'sHobbies Thanks. I hated it growing up, but I love it now. All those people who called me Rainbow can suck it when my resume gets stacked on top of their's because it is more memorable.

phinotpi@gmail.com was preemptively taken by me, but I lost the password :(

3:15 PM
@PhiNotPi Well, that's no good.

@Rainbolt looks so tempting... for something like dirbuster. i mean there must be something hidden....

This answer needs more comments: boardgames.stackexchange.com/a/27536/6692
I don't think it's clear enough that the answer is wrong

> -1 not enough JQuery

I have a deleted answer on that question that got one upvote before I deleted it (because it was also wrong). Do I get to keep the 10 rep I got?

3:26 PM
^

If I undelete the answer in a year, do I get the 10 rep back?

yes

I might be able to sneak in a bad answer under the radar

@Rainbolt :P

good guy Rainbolt

3:28 PM
So, the unthinkable happened... a (non-winning) tie between two Funciton answers on a challenge... interestingly, one is shorter in UTF-8 and the other is shorter in UTF-16, but in either case, the lowest byte count is 136.

that truly is unthinkable

@Rainbolt I think the rep is locked if an answer is deleted more than N months after it was posted (or maybe that's only if the corresponding question is deleted). There might be something similar for undeletion.

You guys are scoring in one UTF and erroring in another?

@MartinBüttner So, if I blink my answer once a month, it will retain its status?

@Rainbolt I have no clue.

3:33 PM
@MartinBüttner At least those aren't winning. One guy beat your Rails answer with 20 bytes of Matlab that has an ans=. I'm not sure how I'll call that.

@Sp3000 Uh no, the Funciton interpreter can handle both encodings. It's just that there are two solutions - one with a smaller literal but an additional comment block, and one with a larger literal but no additional comment block. But because the outline uses block-drawing characters, they have different scores in UTF-8 and UTF-16.

I was just confused because Timwi's answer mentions UTF-21 and has an error message involving UTF-32
So much UTF

UTF-21 is Funciton's own string encoding, not the source file encoding... it's how the integer is turned into a string upon output.

okay, I dug through some stuff, and it turns out I wasn't the person who got phinotpi@gmail.com

the UTF-32 is just from some internal function

3:35 PM
Oh... right

which is even worse

UTF? More like WTF!

@Calvin'sHobbies Oh, I didn't even see that. Where is that meta discussion...

Q: How do we treat default output formats such as "ans = ...." etc.?

Stewie GriffinIn MATLAB and Octave, the default output looks like this (I guess this is relevant for other languages as well): 'This is a string' ans = This is a string x = 'This is a string' x = This is a string Using disp will give: disp('This is a string') This is a string There are, as far as I ...

that one
I'd say both answers would imply that it's invalid on your challenge.

3:38 PM
Yeah, It's just kinda a sore deal for Matlab

the OP seems to agree though
That really depends on how strict the rules are. They state that only 'world' (+ optional trailing newline) should be printed, so then it's 33 bytes. — slvrbld 30 secs ago

@Doorknob do you know who serial voted a bunch of my answers? rep stats show that "serial voting was reversed"

Plenty of languages have an automatic newline on output (that can optionally be suppressed), and are at a disadvantage on challenges where that's not allowed, but that's just differences between languages. Seems the same concept with ans and the like.

@TheDoctor I wonder, if you had that information, what would you do with it? ;)

idk, just curoius

3:43 PM
Is serial accepting a thing? Because I usually accept answers in big chunks at a time.
No issues yet though

@TheDoctor Sorry, but I can't possibly see anything good coming of telling you who it was (and I also don't think we're supposed to disclose that information).

:(

@Calvin'sHobbies I don't think so.

Wordbuilding.SE is weird

Oh, it's at the very bottom

3:56 PM
So many hypotheticals

wow, its not supposed to be at the bottom, right?

Nah. It's supposed to be at the bottom left

I mean, here in PPCG, its just below the question body

I've seen it at the bottom on several sites

3:57 PM
Huh?

huhuhuh
that's weird

then it probably depends on some privilege

Is it the css top:-15 ?

Most of the rep requirements on non-beta sites are insane.

@BadCatEye nice username anagram

@TheDoctor Thanks :D

Yay, I have >10k network rep
Finally
So which secret passages can I see now?

I've thought of a really nice BF derivative for Conor's challenge.
Hopefully I can implement it...

@MartinBüttner Yep, I found that one last night. Might be worth doing some minor conversions to make it a catalog - it shouldn't invalidate any answers.

Q: Square side pinpointing

TuukkaXWelcome to my first code-golf challenge! :) Let's hop right into it. Basically the idea is the tape is on Fermat's spiral. I'll show more once I actually get it working.

4:32 PM
@Mego I think the ban on built-ins makes it a bit unsuitable (of course, lifting that ban doesn't invalidate any answers, but is clearly no what the OP intended).
The bonus doesn't seem like a good idea for a catalogue either.

oh boy you guys are going to get to see my terrible spaghetti Octave code

UTF-8 is my new nemesis

4:40 PM
wooooooooooooosh

I have no idea how to parse utf-8
Tried in C++ and now in Python
C++ was a nightmare, at least I got some results in Python

@Rainbolt meowoosh

@sweerpotato Don't tell Python that it is utf-8. Let Python figure it out.
I'm pretending like I know something but I really don't lol. stackoverflow.com/a/21698118/3224483

It won't :<

I mean, I ran into this problem in C# and that was the solution so I kinda know but not really

4:44 PM
I think this is the first time I've seen someone complain about having problems with UTF-8 (as opposed to UTF-16 I guess)

Customer said "Your program should work for utf-8 or utf-16." Solution was to just remove all the lines of code that cared one way or another. Zero code added.
