@ByteCommander I have no idea about this, but just pinging you as the comment is about your answer, maybe you can set them right askubuntu.com/review/late-answers/633328
08:44
Unity, you're drunk, go home . . . I've only one window of chrome open but it believes there's two
08:54
@Serg you're here again or still here?
@KazWolfe Yup. Work PC. Now it's week-end and I'm on the Ubuntu LT...
09:17
@Fabby still here, had to post an answer to beat Jacob to it >:)
I had one script made before, just modified it under 15 minutes to add what OP wants
@Serg now i installed 16.10, the lks-indicator icon looks weird
@Zanna how so ?
lemme get an image
09:32
@Serg :D
Still that feud going on between you and @JacobVlijm ??? ;-) :D
@Fabby no feud, just friendly competition . . .
unspoken
it's more fun that way. Makes writing scripts even more exciting
I know, that's why I called it a "feud" ;)
(and pulled Jacob in and added two smileys)
You're tired! Go get some sleep!
Yup, I'll do that. Gonna smoke one and sleep
Aaaand accepted
Wooo !
@Serg ^
but please sleep
well that's unusual . . .
How abou the monochrome icon ?
I've added monochrome one on git
09:39
?
hmm
I think it's not the icon itself
somehow it's getting duplicated and put in the wrong place... maybe something to do with the panel itself
could be . . .
le bugs are ever present
anyway, you sleep, we'll fix it when we're both around again :)
indeed
@Serg: dream about this and come up with a solution when you wake up!
09:40
probably not your bug
They never are, but it's always the poor programmer who has to find a workaround! ;-)
yeah!
Ha , I come up with solutions only when I don't sleep and when I do sleep, I have weird dreams . . . . Once , electronics class drove me to the point where I was solving transistor equations in my dreams . . .
alright . . . well, good night guys
morning actually, 3:43 am
Go away!
:D
When I was studying physics, I dreamed equations every night. When I was training to be a teacher, I dreamed about kids' school issues every night. Now I dream about AU every night
09:44
:D :D :D
Do you come up with solutions in your dreams???
You're a physicist? (working as a teacher)
@Fabby yes
@Fabby no
Too bad! ;)
I'm a chemist but except summer jobs, never worked as a chemist.
Always been in IT. :D
I teach physics, so put the two things together :)
do you like blowing stuff up?
I used to...
Haven't blown up anything since my military service though
So what did you study to become a teacher of Physics and not being a Physicist???
o/ Rinzwind!
(Just as curious as the Cheshire cat, none of my business, really)
(so if you feel uncomfortable giving TMI, don't)
oh the course I did in physics was a fast-track thing to allow me to do the teacher training course for secondary science and specialise in physics. We did some chemistry too of course... and I teach chem at the same level as physics
09:51
Wow! Where I come from, you have to be a physicist to be able to teach Physics and a Chemist to teach Chemistry...
Mostly means you end up teaching in 2-4 schools
ah different... it's just GCSE level, it's very simple
14-16 YO?
I'm old enough to remember in the UK there were O-levels and A-levels
How does it work nowadays?
yeah I teach science mainly 11-16. I have one doing BTEC, but that's just for his dyslexia really, he needs help getting the words out. We had a good laugh on Thursday night about how neither of us understand this glycolysis business
BTEC is vocational courses post 16
O levels = GCSE
Business and Technology course?
so after GCSE comes BTEC?
BTEC or A level - BTEC is vocational, A levels academic... but not many people are doing BTEC these days, they are great but the present government doesn't want to give educational opportunities to people who aren't academically inclined :(
10:02
Yeah, that was a killer in Biochemistry 101: write the chemical reaction for Glycolysis on the blackboard, please...
So A-levels still exist?
Meaning BTECs are not promoted?
or actively ....
Erm
Discouraged!
(was the word I was looking for)
(I feel like the proverbial madman asking more questions then %7 wise men can answer)
A levels and BTECs exist, but they are discouraged by the system and only a few excellent colleges, like the one my student attends, are courageously persisting with offering them
haha no wisdom here I'm afraid :)
persisting with offering / persisting to offer / persisting in offering????
How are they discouraged???
persist in
(What? I'm teaching you English now???) :D
oh I don't know exactly how, something to do with the way schools are rated, students are given points for certain things etc etc
isn't English your first language?
I mean: if kids want to follow a course, they will, no?
Depending on how you count, 3rd or fourth.
If you count Dutch as a language, (cc@Rinzwind) English is my fourth...
If you don't count Dutch as a separate language from Flemish, Third. :D
@Fabby oh of course, but they can only choose from what is available
10:11
If it's available, it's available and you can get in if you want, right?
(and work hard enough)
@Zanna hmm
Do some/all schools refuse students?
@Fabby I think I have been saying confusing things due to not knowing very well myself
@jokerdino mmhmm
:D :D :D Oh! you were talking out of the wrong orifice then!
;-)
But it's a little bit clearer anyway.Thanks!
10:38
@Fabby No worries, I know you meant well.
:)
@Zanna @Zanna @edwinksl why do you find this off topic?
How's Greece doing nowadays?
'Bout as bad as always :)
:(
@terdon answered!
(you were looking for a technical solution to a technical problem, whereas it's a logical solution to a logical problem)
Sorry! CAPS LOCK error!
11:12
@terdon I thought the problems were in windows too, so not Ubuntu, but I guess I wasn't paying enough attention. Should have skipped, as it's unclear to me
Sorry to single you out, I just pinged the close voters who are chat regulars. We really need to pay attention and not close questions just because they mention another distro.
It's fine, please feel encouraged to call me out and correct me always, I appreciate it
Is being awesome a decent reason to call someone out?
Hi people
11:19
@jokerdino no ;)
keep it clean
@Zanna :(
@Zanna lol, if only half our users were half as good at flagging/closing as you are. . .
@terdon blush thank you!
@jokerdino calling out is for mistakes in my mind. I must have made one if you are sad...
11:36
Now what the heck is with that file path? --^
I'm on Ubuntu, and yet that looks like a Windows file path.
@Zanna The only reason I had for calling you out is not valid haha
@AndroidDev it's a fakepath
@jokerdino But why doesn't it show /home/androiddev/Pictures...
@jokerdino Call-out! :D
@AndroidDev I guess they care more about uploading the picture than showing the accurate path..
@AndroidDev it happens on both Windows and Ubuntu. obfuscation of local resources is what it is.
11:40
@Fabby it's a meme at this point haha.
@AndroidDev happened only recently
@Fabby Ohhhhh.... so it's Chrome (yeah, use it for Flash) doing that? Actually, I'm all for that!
@jokerdino Lol <3
yup Chrome!
Not on Firefox!
:D :D :D
Why do you look like a chef haha
11:42
What was that picture anyway?
me
@AndroidDev it was him in the picture
@jokerdino That was a picture of my birthday: I got a BBQ outfit!
@TheXed LOL!
@Fabby Oh neat!
11:47
11.04 is EOL, right?
Yup! :) Only used it once and not even with the person who gave it to me (who was expecting at least 5 BBQs out of that)
in 2011 it was retired
need close votes???
In that case, EOL:

Voted.
@AndroidDev next time use inline please?
[]() etc
@Fabby No, it was 2012. 2011 was when they released it.
Voted too
11:51
the real message as : look at the release schedule.
(which you did apparently) :D
@Fabby You mean doing it like this: askubuntu.com/questions/840419/… ?
@AndroidDev Please leave a comment asking them to upgrade if possible?
Yup! Good enough!
@jokerdino Sure.
@jokerdino that's what the Close vote for EOL does!
What? I'm teaching you modding now??? :D :D :D
11:53
Hmm true but I feel a written comment is more personal.
meh. I'd rather write a funny comment here then a serious one out there.
That's what the process is about anyway...
Follow the process! :D (even in your spare time)
@AndroidDev left an appropriate comment :)
Thanks @AndroidDev.
That's exactly how I would begin my comment to a newcomer too.
11:56
:)
@Zanna You're too sweet!
(EOL to a newbie doen't mean anything though)
@Zanna "was discontinued" would be more appropriate to someone who doesn't know what they're doing
I don't have a Pixel to verify, but: androidpolice.com/2016/10/21/…
It was AndroidDev who left the comment.
While I agree EOL is not comprehensible to newcomers, " [...] is thus no longer supported" should still be enough to make them understand.
12:01

Sorry I was on the tube, but I see credit was correctly reassigned, sorry for any confusion
The YouTube or the metro?
;-)
Metro
So you live in London... :-)
In another few months, I'll just show up at your door with a bunch of flowers!
12:49
@Fabby haha moving here or visiting?
user136984
Is anyone else here using the Arc theme? It is amazing! :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: Did you say you were using it? I have it now on 16.10.

user136984
It should also be noted that this is in dark mode and that Arc comes with several different shades of dark, and one which is light.
good morning!
user136984
@Fabby: And that is a Totoro in the background by the way. ;)
13:15
@Zanna Hey, thanks for telling me. Hmm... seems like that other guys might be right. That answer was one of my first posts here (well, it's about the 60th answer, but at the end of my first month on the site). Unfortunately I can't delete it because it's accepted.
meh... Still like my Steampunk theme better! @ParanoidPanda
Hi all. Does anyone know if an Ubuntu ISO can still run from a 2GB USB stick? Ubuntu.com says yes but it seems small these days, anyone tried?
user136984
@Fabby: What does that look like?
@ParanoidPanda Been using it for 3-4 months now. It's super awesome :D
13:36
@Fabby Apropos steampunk, I bought a cool book yesterday:
Btw, George Mann is also the author of various Doctor Who episodes and comics. @Rinzwind
I'm really excited to read it :)
user136984
@Fabby: Wow! Looks cool! :)
@MarkKirby Sure it works. The latest Ubuntu iso is around 1.5 GB in size, so you still have half a GB unused after burning the iso to the USB drive.
Using an USB drive any larger than 2GB for that would be a waste of space.
@ByteCommander Thanks, just needed confirmation that was not an issue :)
no problem :)
Do we have any mods around btw?
I need an accepted answer of me to get deleted, but I can't do that because of the accept.
Looks like @jokerdino has been here, see if he gets a notification. Apart from that, I have not seen one today.
13:44
Hmm
@ParanoidPanda :)
@MarkKirby Hi.
@Zanna :D :D :D When I have to go to the Data Centre in Slough, I'll drop you a line!
Hi, it was bytecommander who was looking for a mod @jokerdino
@jokerdino Thanks for taking care of my answer.
13:47
np
Errare humanum est... Or something similar ;)
@ByteCommander The correct way of saying that is:
Humanum errare est
(making a mistake while saying that making mistakes is human)
When someone complains that it's wrong, just shake your head and say "you don't get it, do you?"
Ern... whatever :D
Wise Old @Fabby
@Zacharee1 You got it, @ByteCommander didn't... ;-)
13:56
I think Byte is a little fed up :p
:D :D :D
14:07
Hi, Any idea on this? :

Q: Tor service is running, but doesn't work and nothing is shown in the log file

DummyBeginnerI have a problem in Tor service, especially with its log file. The log file in the path /var/log/tor/log changes only the first time Tor is running after installation. It does not change after Tor restart. This is what I did: After installing Tor, got this output from log file: $ sudo tail -f ...

Ask Ubuntu is weird: I got 10000 views on this question: askubuntu.com/questions/581902/… and only 10 upvotes.
that's 1‰
@Fabby I had question with 2K views and no upvotes
and I haven't installed tor on 16.04 yet... :D
@Fabby haha no problem. I didn't mean that
14:16
@Fabby imma dv
@Fabby
you asked me to ping you
@ByteCommander oh cool, good to see it got fixed :)
did I ping @Fabby correctly?
@heynnema yes
thanks
14:30
There a party up in here?
when I ping @Fabby, what, if anything, happens on his/her end? I'm not getting any response.
Think it's like a question response
and can be changed on frequency with settings, I think
awfully quiet for a chat room :-(
well, sometimes its more active than others
If you ping someone and they are on, they would hear a loud annoyiing sound
and it will get added as a notification otherwise
I've got stuff to do. Please tell @Fabby that I stopped by at his/her request.
thanks
14:39
hmm
I thought T-Mobile was still providing the Simple Choice plan...
Sorry @heynnema I was having a smoke
Have a look at this question.

Q: Installing Ubuntu on the processor Intel Tablet

Ibrahim AliHow proved Ubuntu 16.04 iso allocated to the computer on the Tablet carries Intel Atom processor instead Alandroed?

@Fabby I read stroke
:D
15:04
@Fabby hello
Hi
what's up?
I already did what I wanted to do:
If you First want to back-up, put that paragraph first.
good
15:06
so edited your a
@Zacharee1 VTC
Did you test that an overwrite without formatting will not overwrite hour home directory? @heynnema
(any standard files in the profile would be overwritten)
did my answer make sense? Your answer sounded like you couldn't do that. Yes, I did it that was, and Ubuntu installer left /home (not separate partition) alone.
that way
another weird one

Q: What is the difference between the Ubuntu version computer and version tablet?

Ibrahim AliWhat is the difference between the Ubuntu version computer and version tablet? The program works on a computer version of Ubuntu running on Ubuntu tablet or is it different such as Windows desktop exe and windows phones xap?

same guy wrote both of them
@heynnema IMHO, any files in the home directory would be overwritten
(just not the ones in the subdirectories)
worked for me, in the past
so your answer might be dangerous depending on what the user wants to do.
I'm not saying that for your use-case it idn't work.
15:10
If I recall, he was working in a Virtualbox VM, and needed to reinstall Ubuntu and leave his /home alone.
I'm saying that it might have some nasty side-effects.
like what?
inquiring minds want to know :-)
well, all config files (starting with .) might be overwritten.
E.g. .bash_history (to name one)
shouldn't be, if they're in .config in home directory
that one is not.
My first thought was: yours is the better answer
15:12
I don't think that dot directories were overwritten in my method.
but then, I started thinking: why did I put everything in a separate partition and that is the reason.
If you add a warning that some config files might be overwritten, I'll upvote yours again!
yes, but on a small disk/vm, the user always partitions it in such a way that there's much wasted space.
I added a min of 8GB depending on use-case to my answer
big disk, or with a 2nd HDD, separate /home makes more sense
and swap is well, always dependent on use case (linked another answer)
OK, good enough.
15:14
yes, swap on a 2nd HDD makes sense, if there's a SDD.
You have my vote again.
cheers!
:)
Heynnema sounds Dutch... Ben jij een Nederlander?
parents are dutch... heynneman
(and your pic looks Dutch too)
Ah! :D
15:16
u too?
Nope.
Dutch is one of the languages I speak though...
>:-)
actually... it used to be heijnneman
ij got changed to a y
yeah, but that would be totally mispronounced in CA!
easier for Americano's to spell :-)
exactly
and actually; it's now closer to the original as about 200 years ago, it was probably written
Heÿnneman
15:19

true!
gotta run... the shower is calling :-)
I know because of UNICODE and storage of old Dutch texts in DBs
I gotto go too!
later!
grocry shopping!
Ciao!
15:22
@terdon the last sentence says "thats why i want elementary os"
well, last sentence if you ignore the "thanks in advice" part
@edwinksl Ah, so it did. I hadn't checked the original version.
all 5 CVs were cast before OP accused us of not realizing they wanted to install ubuntu
i mean, how was that obvious if OP ends the post with "i want elementary"
Need reopen votes?
@edwinksl It wasn't. The question was very unclear. I think the OP actually was asking about Ubuntu in their heads but they did make it very hard for anyone else to see that. Very understandable close vote.
okay, hope that clears things up. this definitely wasn't a case of "ohhh i see elementary mentioned, i am gonna close it no matter what".
15:28
@MarkYisri I Voted To Close (VTC) as "Too broad"...
@edwinksl context?
@Zacharee1 askubuntu.com/posts/839706/revisions. you were one of the 5 CVers
@edwinksl I sometimes come across questions that I want to CV, only to discover that I've already done so the day before
no memory of doing so whatsoever
heh, same
15:45
@bytecommander: in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/lightdm
add the following line:
/vms/shared rw,
below
# bug in compiz https://launchpad.net/bugs/697678
/etc/compizconfig/config rw,
/etc/compizconfig/unity.ini rw,

/ r,
I want you to try before I answer
(you need to reload first with sudo systemctl reload apparmor.service of course!)
16:00
Ah good to read this @edwinksl your memory is sharper than mine, I didn't check the edit history, just assumed I was wrong
@Fabby Haha, not that I know of :). Kind of slowed down lately, focussing on refreshing my existing launchpad ppa's. I might ask you a favor soon btw (not on AU ;) )
OK. Do you have my skype? Better to do it there then my private email... @JacobVlijm
@Fabby, no, I don't, would you share it with me?
firstnamelastname
no dots, underscores or anything
16:07
@Fabby got it!
:)
@Fabby I have a crappy internet connection here, refreshing a page takes minutes, will send you beginning of next week :)
Good enough... But during the week, I'm extremely busy!
(12-16h days)
@Fabby Aaargh. It is not something that takes you time though, and there is no hurry :)
:-) Good!
16:58
I've observed disturbing trend from some users who try to dupe to questions where they have an answer, even when the question is not a dupe.
I even noticed that after voting to close a question, they modified the target question title to match with better duplicity.
