g'day

Oli
Morning

so, jrg and marco are ubuntu members now?

@htorque Yup.

sweet

Oli
And time-allowing, I'll apply on the 1st November
Hopefully with a few other EMEA-based Ask Ubuntu people.

6:15 AM
and you are sure 33000 rep are sufficient? ;D
»AskUbuntu« moderator? :P

Wow... NAT (network address translation) is something else altogether.

did i miss the spammers?

Oli
Would you believe me if I told you there was a character limit on that input when I first filled that out?
You missed a lot of spam, yeah

@Oli sure! :)
oh nooooooo :-(
("no" on "i missed it" and "no" on "i missed gaining flag weight from it")
do other SE sites see the same raise in spam?

Oli
It was good spam too. Today's was trying to sell us all some bedding (as well as bags, watches and gold for WoW)

6:22 AM
Good old "Rolecks" :)

i love my shiny golden rollex

6:59 AM
Night all.

Goodbye!

@GeorgeEdison cya

@FlackBot: Goodnight.

See you later, George Edison.

2 hours later…
9:35 AM
oh, swag seems to have arrived. but i only got a yellow card, meaning "i'm too lazy to deliver, the idiot should get the package himself tomorrow." >:O

Oli
10:05 AM
Argl the flags
Although I have to say, @htorque, you make dealing with a whole load of flags a lot easier. Thank you for leaving comments everywhere :)

10:21 AM
Can you answer this? How to enable experimental rounded corners? http://askubuntu.com/questions/68269/how-to-enable-experimental-rounded-corners #compiz

@Oli i only do it because i have the auto-message script :P
it's really no work - three clicks and it's done.

@htorque lucky you
@Oli cheesy answer :P

Oli
10:38 AM
@ajmitch :)
I was going to go for "That's a really excellent question Oli - everybody should be voting for it!"

A: How to create a meta-package that automatically installs other packages?

ajmitchA meta-package like this can be created with a tool called equivs which will create a package with just dependency information. First, create a directory: mkdir my-metapackage cd my-metapackage/ Now run the program: equivs-control ns-control It will create a file called ns-control, open t...

cough

Oli
Oh boo.

there are a few questions around about equivs

Oli
Yours has a broken image link in it. deletes

3
A: How to trick apt dependencies?

OliFor where you're actually providing the dependency, I'd use checkinstall to do the installation. checkinstall basically replaces make install and generates a proper .deb package and then installs that. Not only does that allow you to remove or upgrade the package in a better way (when the time co...

hey, look who answered that one
the image link isn't broken for me - I still see the package icon

Oli
10:40 AM
Yeah I'm still not sure how that works.

so you're asking & answering a question that you've previously answered yourself ;)

Oli
Yeah I'm good like that. I'm almost certain I've done it before then too. Every 6 months or so I'll answer a question about equivs.

I need to answer a few more packaging questions this weekend I think

Oli
I'm just wondering which questions I should close as a duplicate of which others.
Obviously my new one should die in a burning car

I've got a long list of tasks to complete

10:43 AM
Hello all

Good evening

Oli
@ajmitch you won that battle but war is a long and tricky path.
I'll get you next time.

@Oli I'm the poor struggling volunteer at the mercy of the moderators here
Have pity on me

Oli
(aka I considered your post better than either of my attempts so will close any dupes against that one)

Congratulations!!!! @jrg @MarcoCeppi

Oli
10:47 AM
I also improved the tags a bit on the question so hopefully auto-searches will find it before people write the questions.

just looking at the latest lightdm guest session post

Oli
We must have a billion of those.

they're both about the guest session
yeah, no doubt :)
askubuntu.com/search?q=lightdm+guest shows more than a few to clean up

Oli
It's amazing that the title-search doesn't pick those out dupes. You would have thought that as soon as "disable lightdm guest" was typed in 200 duplicate questions would pop right up.
Or it does and people just ignore them, like they ignore the "Are you sure this is an answer and not a 'me-too'?" page that new users are forced through.

Can I add two separate answers to a question? :)
or should I just update the one answer to include the other information

Oli
10:52 AM
Stupid people. Site would be a lot tidier if we had fewer people and more robots like Jorgescript and if everybody just fewer problems too.
@ajmitch If they're vastly different, separate them out.

I'll try & be robot-like

Oli
If one is just a continuation of the other or a slight deviation, add to it.

A: How do I put a package into the Ubuntu repositories?

ajmitchSee https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages/REVU for details on getting new packages in - but be aware that there are a lot of packages awaiting review there, and it can be sometimes easier to get packages in via Debian, where they can benefit even more people. For Ubuntu, you can ask people for re...

A: Will applications in the software center receive updates of new versions?

ajmitchNew versions of applications can be provided after they have made it into the development release by backports. This repository is enabled by default in 11.10, but it is not an automatic update for packages that you have installed. Backports are built & tested mainly by volunteers, and there...

that one is semi-related, but for stable versions
not really the same question though

I can haz transcript of membership?

Oli
If we're talking about the first question, edit it. They're both right options and you can't accept two answers.

Oli
I know that goes against what I just said but I had a slightly different example in mind that worked better with two competing answers.

@Oli alright
I might leave it until the morning though, midnight now :)

Oli
Pah, I've been up for 30 hours!
2

yes but you're mad
2

Oli
True enough

11:01 AM
Yeah, @Oli, you're only second J Castro.

But does he love the metal?

Oli
I've been debugging his code all night. He got stuck in a loop and edited the same question over and over again at around 400 edits per minute. Had to take him offline and see what was up.

that's a bit slow

IT IS TIME TO GO CRAZY ANSWERING Q's

Oli
Yeah the site's servers aren't fast enough to let him run at full capacity so I have him looking for aliens the rest of the time.

11:04 AM

A: How do I use a Launchpad recipe for patching and building an original package?

jelmerYes, you should indeed create a new branch derived from the vim Bazaar branch on Launchpad (lp:ubuntu/vim), and commit your patch to that branch. As long as there are no conflicts when merging, the recipe will merge the two branches when one of them changes, and rebuild. This means that if there...

deserves more upvotes - jelmer is one of the LP developers & works on bzr as well

Oli
@ajmitch I'll give him a small bounty in 24 hours (when it'll let me award it)

@Oli awesome, thanks

Oli
Just a "welcome to the site, stay awesome"

jrg
Oh yeah, speaking of which, I've got a bounty that's about to end...

11:11 AM
@jrg Hi, Congrats :)

Oli
@jrg It has more than 24 hours on it? Bug me about it tomorrow and I'll refund it if you're still not getting anywhere.

jrg
My draft testimonial for @Oli that will never get onto his wikipage:P

"He likes kittens, which is a good thing, and hates spam (rolex watches on Ask Ubuntu anyone?)."
@Oli Ok,
@AmithKK Thanks! :)

Oli
Right I'm going to bed. I've been being awesome for far too long. Night all.

@Oli ok, thanks :)

Q: How can I add my application to the Ubuntu repository?

Aggelos KolaitisI've just made a project called tgames and want to add it at the ubuntu repository... (multiverse or universe or anything) Can I do this or should I create a ppa???

I voted to close that as a dupe, I hope that's ok :)

jrg
/me votes to close as dupe

Since I was just editing the answer on the other one to make it more generic

A: Adding a virtual screen to xorg.conf 11.04 (third display over vnc)

Amith KKThere is a vnc module for X that can be installed which will provide the native :0 X display when connecting remotely with the vncviewer. Install the "vnc4server" package (universe). ^ is my answer correct?

I don't know enough about VNC & I try & avoid X configuration these days, so I don't know :)
too many bad memories of editing X configs, from when modelines had to be just right

Yep, that's pretty much true :)

jrg
11:46 AM
@AmithKK looks right to me.
I love staying away from Xorg.conf.

I love never having touched xorg.conf.

masterig the xorg.conf isn't that hard. you just need to read 3000 pages of documentation. :P

@htorque Pay me a dollar for each page, I'll consider it. :D
Firefox for Android is getting a native UI: wiki.mozilla.org/Fennec/NativeUI
Linux users should lobby for native GTK and Qt UI as well!

jrg
@Oxwivi Only consider it? I'd do it in a heartbeat. :P

A: Set up two identical USB printers

Amith KKYou must be looking for Printer classes (No, not school) Firstly disconnect both the printers. Open "Printing" and you will be presented with such a window: Press the Plus and select Class: Create a new class: Add the right printer to this class: Repeat this process again for the other ...

11:59 AM
@jrg Consider what?

jrg
Reading the 3K pages of Xorg docs. :D
@AmithKK Playing around eh?
Printers are the devil.

@jrg You've given me FIRE!
nvm

Q: How to 'Expo' One Big Wall with Dual Monitors

VladWith Dual Monitors, when I use the Expo, it clones repeating itself in each monitor. With 10.10 I solved this with the option 'One Big Wall' but this doesn't work on 11.04 I have a nvidia 560Ti with proprietary drivers.

tell him to use

@jrg Oh. You replied to the line about native UIs instead of the xorg, so I was confused. Anyway, yes consider, because 3K pages will also need a substantial commitment and willpower. >.<

the 10.10 ver of compiz

jrg
@Oxwivi you're talking to the guy who read the HTML5 spec for fun. :P
(well, almost all of it. Had to leave before I was able to finish the last couple pages)

12:03 PM
@Oxwivi Give me 3*10⁶ of $ and i'd do it

@jrg You seem to have a lot of free time. You had some sort of interest in it, at least?
@AmithKK If it's that much, not much to consider. I'd gladly do it.
But seriously, RHCE seems much easier than the whole xorg.

jrg
@Oxwivi Yeah, I had time and motivation. :D

@Oxwivi We're kids, What'd you expect
But Weirdly He has MORE time than me

Well, without interest and motivation it is more difficult.
@AmithKK He has 25 hours a day, what did you expect?

jrg
@Oxwivi Only The Jorge has 25 hours in a day.

12:05 PM
(one more hour from another dimension he discovered when reading Einestein's theory of relativity)

In C++
doesent 255+1=1?(when its an int)

@jrg Nah, his time is beyond our calculation.

jrg
@AmithKK Remember that project I was playing around with, and how the green header was giving me headaches?
I found the reason why all greens look hideous.

@jrg Your statement is unenvironmentally friendly. I suggest you withdraw it.

@jrg Yes

jrg
12:09 PM
@Oxwivi Ok, all the web-safe colors known as "green" are ugly.

Oli
Green is awesome.
All the websafe colours are ugly.

@jrg :P

jrg
@Oli I thought you were sleeping...?

@Oli See: your avatar

hello

12:11 PM
@jrg He has Wake-On-Mention on his brain BIOS, and its enabled

not sleeping enough to delete answers right in front of my pointer above "flag"

Oli
Why would you be looking at websafe? The need for that has long gone. We've had 16bit and TrueColor since before you were born.

jrg
@Oli curiosity.

You silly Ubuntu people and your flags!! shakes fist

WE? WEEEEEEE?

12:12 PM
Yes, you.

Oli
It was @AmithKK :)

jrg
hides Whatever it is, I didn't do it!

Oli
When you flag something in chat all the moderators (for every site) can see it.

Not just moderators.

Not just mods, also all users with 10k global rep.

12:13 PM
and they all know where you live!

jrg
And they all get pings. has heard this before

Oli
Blimey. That's a little overkill (given I'm a mod active in the room)

jrg
:P
@Oli who knows if you're active? Maybe you're flackbot? :O

IT TOOK A SECOND OUT OF MY DAY. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT.

you have too much free time! chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/201/conversation/horrible-fates-of-non-free-software

12:14 PM
WHY. YOU BROKE THE RULES.

Oli
@jrg I don't know what you mean.

@Oli No, not this time

Very good @Mana, castigate them.

Oli
Hush your insolence!

@AmithKK hi! where have you been? :D

12:16 PM
Who Hast kicketh me?

jrg
@AmithKK that'd be Oli. Probably. :D
He's got a weird sense of humour when it comes to kicking people out of the chatroom.

Oli
@MarcoCeppi did it.

@jrg Oh, you've got one of those too?

jrg
@ArdaXi Yeah, we do.

Oli
An Oli?

12:17 PM
@Oli Yeah. You're like our @badp.

@jrg Tries to kick oli.......*Fails*.... FUUUUUUUUUUU

Anyways, I'll just leave on this note: youtube.com/…
Bye!

cya

cya

jrg
@AmithKK Be careful.. I might just flag that for threatening the Moderator.
Cya.

Oli
12:18 PM
@ArdaXi Your badp? Pish and poppycock. He belongs to us. I have the receipt somewhere.

jrg
LOL. As he gets kicked again.

:| seriously?

Oli
Actually wasn't me that time.

@Oli Oh, you do? Good, now we can return him.

jrg
You're a failure @Oli. You can't lie. At. All. :D
prepares to get kicked

Oli
12:19 PM
If there was a log, I'd show you.

Bravely stars that

jrg
Yeah, yeah. You can safely lie because there isn't a log! :D

The Marco Virus! Its Activated!

jrg
@AmithKK That's not cool. :P
Where do I file a bug about ubuntu.com?

Oli
I want to say launchpad.net/ubuntu-website but I feel that might be incorrect
There is a question on AU IIRC

jrg
12:26 PM
Wait, nevermind. There's a Question For That.™

Q: How do I report a bug against http://www.ubuntulinux.org/, the ubuntu website

charlie-tcaSince the website and wiki have been redesigned, the text is not always readable. The footer text overwrites other text, the links are not uniform colors, and the colors use blend and blur the text. What is the proper procedure to report these and other issues with this website? I have reported...

@RolandTaylor Hi

jrg
Just made that a little more findable. ;)

@AmithKK Hi!

@Oli ubuntulinux.org still exists?

Oli
12:31 PM
It was only ever a virtualhost of ubuntu.com

why does the us letter format exist?

Oli
It's been reduced to a redirect now

doesn't fit in my folder, dammit!

Oli
Burn it. That will teach them.

that will teach joel spolsky!

12:32 PM
@htorque Standards exists, whether they're used or not.

standards that aren't used shouldn't be standards :P
3

Oli
Isn't US Letter fairly common in the US?
Or have they seen sense and moved to A4?

jrg
We haven't moved to A4 yet.

no idea, but i'd prefer they move to the metric system first :P

Oli
A4 is metric :)

12:34 PM
@htorque that would be waaaay to hard, what would nasa blame their mistakes on then?

@jrg That calls for arson against whoever is responsible for it's widespread use.

ha!

what is the chmod number if my user needs to access a folder?

a chain is 22 yards, a yard is 3 feet, a foot is 12 inches - wtf?

Probably the government and stuff.

Oli
12:35 PM
And don't get me started on foolscap!

jrg
@AmithKK depends.
In 11.10, Ask Ubuntu was featured on as part of the Installer slideshow.[1] However, there is no mention of it here[2], although the other various support channels *are*. [1] http://i.stack.imgur.com/b6UfN.png [2] http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

This bug affects me too

I just downloaded sublime text 2 on my fresh install, and it comes backed in a tar.bz2 - when I extract it, how can I add it to the launcher, and make it "searchable" in the unity dash?

Me too

jrg
Not to sound like I'm whining or anything, but that's a big bug.

Oli
12:40 PM
Well this is weird. Trying to close a question and all I can do is keep adding close votes. I've added 4 now (so there are 6 votes to close) and it just won't die.

jrg
@Oli link me up, maybe your moderator magic isn't there anymore.
;P

Oli
@Greg I'd assume Alacarte (if that still works). It's the menu editor of old. I assume Unity still pulls from the standard menu system

he lost his mod mojo? :o

12:42 PM
ITS TROLL TIME!

@htorque what type of file goes in /usr/share/applications ? Does it need to be a copy of the .desktop?

Oli
Ding dong, the troll is dead.

jrg
@AmithKK wow, you just set a record for the number of kicks in an hour. :D

want my troll mask?
user image
3
@Greg it's .desktop files
@Greg you can add it to /usr/share/applications if you want it globally accessible, or on the other directory for it to be locally accessible (in that case you need to make the .desktop file executable iirc)

Oli
But really, this is getting silly now.

12:45 PM
which question is that?

10 close votes?

How can that have 11 close votes?!

However, I can only vote to close once.

Well that's something at least. I should have stopped after it failed the first time

I knew I got up too early...

This is a job for.... CHAOS.

@Explorer looks I got up too early :D

yeah you got up too early yeah

Ugh, Markdown can be a PITA at times. not as bad as HTML though. :P

@Oli what's up with the close votes on that thing, seriously...

Nonono

12:50 PM
nope
:)

jrg
Oh good.

I'm just chilling. Hi!
Oh, yeah, take away the context. Great.

:2224460 So hostile!

Oli
Turns out I can't flag things - It just deletes them
Fo' shame

HOSTILITY. I might have to ban someone for that.

12:50 PM
wouldn't make a lot of sense to let moderators flag stuff :P

@Mana grabs popcorn

I missed that one...

Oli
@htorque We can on the site. We use it to write private comments about @jrg on his posts

The obvious. It has been stated.

@RolandTaylor It must be purged at once! At once, I say!

Speaking of Jorge...
Since I revealed his true origins, I haven't seen him on chat O.o...

Can't blame him. This chat is INCREDIBLY SILLY.

@ArdaXi I feel like I might be a part of the problem, somehow.

sly little fox I am...

12:56 PM
@Mana Well yes, Ubuntu is more about the people than the OS... Though we've been criticized for not paying much attention the software.

@Mana It wasn't like that yesterday, I'm wondering why :-\

@Explorer ;)

@Oxwivi I think you accidentally a couple words.

@Explorer Really? Every time I come in here this place just seems ridiculously hyper.

Everyone was putting on their super serious face because yesterday was a rather important day

12:57 PM
@Mana DID YOU KICK ME?

@Mana Every time you come in anywhere you seem ridiculously hyper.

@Mana it just got a whole lot worse @AmithKK

@ArdaXi Thanks for pointing it out.

@Mana I guess you got the point

@ArdaXi ta-bum dssssh

I knew it.

you called it upon yourself

@badp I'd be careful if I were you. I know where you live.

@badp I also know where you live

Woah! This is getting good.

There's just only a few thousand aparentments around here

Ha... I know where you all live!
Earth is smaller than you think ;).

@badp Yeah but the Dutch are all crazy connected, I just need to make a couple phonecalls and I'll reach whoever signed you up for that apartment.
