Scopes are straightforward in C++ though.
{ == new scope.
You can even use { and } by themselves just to create a new scope.

Oli
They still inherit the scope though and the can muddy it up with callbacks. JS only gets that confusing because so often it forces people into an asynchronous setting.

12:19 AM
@jrg: Still around?
:(
@jrg, @RolandTaylor: I added StackAd to 2buntu :)
Please let me know if it needs any adjustments.

You can test the file on this page.

Q: Auto compile service on for Ubuntu packages?

warl0ckIs there any service provided by Ubuntu , to automatically compile source to binary deb packages , and for multi-architecture ?

dupe!

@GeorgeEdison a minute?

I started writing an answer & though I should probably close as a dupe instead :)

I've got this error : sudo: ./bin/sony-acpid: command not found
still doesn't work :-\

1:06 AM
@Explorer Does the bin folder exist?
...and if so, what's in it?
@ajmitch: If askubuntu-data-dump ends up going into the archives, should the data dumps be moved out of /opt?

@GeorgeEdison definitely

Into /usr/share/se-data-dumps perhaps?

/opt is only a requirement to make sure that there are no file conflicts with packages that are in the archives
yeah, something like that

(The XDG spec. says to put architecture-independent stuff in /usr/share.)

And if you want to do regular downloads, I'm of the opinion that they'd be put into /var/cache or similar
Others may disagree with me :)

1:19 AM
Yeah, that sounds fine.

As the proud owner of the 6th upvote, I happily announce that the ad will now be displayed!

1:36 AM
@JorgeCastro searching for votes, shame on you ;)
as the proud owner of the first upvote on it earlier, I did my part

1:49 AM
@JorgeCastro: Are you using the local data server?
(Just curious...)

@JorgeCastro have a paddle?

2:07 AM
@RolandTaylor Did you notice the addition of StackAd to 2buntu?
(It's at the bottom on the right sidebar.)

@GeorgeEdison yeah afaict

jrg
2:25 AM
@GeorgeEdison looks awesome.

How to find small non-empty folders? http://askubuntu.com/questions/76973/how-to-find-small-non-empty-folders #commandline

@GeorgeEdison I saw the message but I haven't checked as yet
OH SWEET :D

3:06 AM
Great!
I might add some nice fade-in animations later.
@ajmitch: Would it make more sense to stick the cron job in the data dump package or the data server package?
It really doesn't matter - I just wonder which is more logical.

@GeorgeEdison probably the dump package, I guess

3:24 AM
oh nice!

Now maybe my pagerank will improve :P

maybe this will help the ubuntu wiki as well

3:45 AM
Does anyone see a problem here?
if `service audataserver-proxy status` ; then
    service audataserver-proxy stop
fi
I get an error: Ask: command not found.
...and it points to the line with fi on it.
Aha! I think I found it.

2 hours later…
5:23 AM
@George Edison out of curiosity what was it?

5:35 AM
Can you answer this? change xorg.conf based on displaylink monitor detection using lightdm http://askubuntu.com/questions/76976/change-xorg-conf-based-on-displaylink-monitor-detection-using-lightdm #xorg

what has happened with the g+ logo?! it's ORANGE? :O

it is shabby
so fugly

12:18 PM
that is my question!
/me does a happy dance~

12:55 PM

jrg
1:08 PM
@jokerdino Awesome question!
Also, has anyone else noticed that questions get tweeted more than awesome answers?

yeah. more focus have been given to question than answers.
are these done manually or computed?

Hi! @jrg

jrg
They're computed.
I had an account that did all the questions, and was going to make another one that did all the answers, but I didn't get very far with that.
@AmithKK hiya!

all the answers? that is a bit spammy.

jrg
Hmm... Not sure what to do with this one... - askubuntu.com/suggested-edits/5113
Heh yeah, it would have been now - but back in December 2010, it wouldn't have been. ;)

1:12 PM
you should have done all questions with accepted answers.

jrg
The entire saga - meta.askubuntu.com/questions/772/… (all links to @Ubuntu_ask are dead now, I re purposed him. :P)

haha :P nice work.

jrg
I'd be open to starting it up again, there's an account that used to do the questions feed as well.

@jrg Irc Pl0x

jrg
I'm on, you just didn't try to ping me. :P

1:16 PM
what does ubuntu_james do?

jrg
Him? He tweets the 2buntu feed, random Ubuntu-related stuff I find, and i use him on release day to answer #ubuntu questions.

@jrg No, all IRC cloud connections got kicked 2 hours ago.

jrg
Wish they told me that...

and @jrg ignore those edits. they seem to be rubbish.

jrg
Yeah, it is. doesn't help that if I were to just approve @hhlp's tag wikis, I'd run out of votes in about 3 seconds. :P

1:22 PM
o.O
LOL

this message has been trunicated

1:57 PM
hey real quick guys, anyone know where the rhythmbox playlists are stored so I can import them into banshee?

jrg
Not sure.
@sadmicrowave ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/playlists.xml

that is for gnome 2?

jrg
As far as I know, it still stores it there. :P

@sadmicrowave run this command

@jrg I don't have rhythmbox dir in ~/.gnome2/

2:01 PM
locate playlist.xml

jrg
Hm.

:D

jrg
actually ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/playlists.xml

@jokerdino +s
*playlists

/usr/share/rhythmbox/playlists.xml
there^

jrg
2:03 PM
that's global, not local

.local/share/rhythmbox/playlists.xml
found it XD
nice work @jrg

jrg
and I had to install rythmbox for that! XD
it actually looks pretty decent now.

smart work.
i had remnants of rhythmbox

grr, the banshee import is only letting me import playlist files. Therefore those dir's don't show .xml or any other type files since it is searching for a specific file stype
type*

jrg
@jokerdino :) probably worth documenting on the site... have some free rep for my work. :P

2:06 PM
document where? XD
actually i am doing some text processing on my side.
kinda time consuming.
i am 200 away from 1k yay
you question and answer yourself? LOL

jrg
yes I do.

any ideas on my statement above?^

jrg
It's not a day until I've either questioned myself and answered, or found a question that I answered. Yay for self-documenting!

o.O

jrg
@sadmicrowave Not sure. Ask on the site? Might get some more help there.

2:11 PM
eh, I'll just recreate them :/

Hi guy, maybe somebody can help me. I am trying to make GNOME 3 the default desktop in ubuntu 11.10. As far as I know it should remember the last pick, but it doesn't (after reset). I also read this question: askubuntu.com/questions/37131/… but the file already says:
[Desktop]
Session=gnome-shell

@jrg tell him what you told me ;p

Any ideas?

upgrade to 11.10

jrg
Hm.
@Trufa I can't replicate this bug where it doesn't remember the last desktop.

2:19 PM
@jrg hmmm sstrange, but one question, I always get confused with the names, is gnome-shell the one I want?

jrg
Well, technically Unity is GNOME3. it's just a desktop shell over gnome3. So if you want the default gnome3 experience, then yes, you want to install/use gnome-shell

@jrg so the ~/.dmrc file should be correct as I have it. Is it a bad Idea to delete unity all together?

jrg
Yes, it's a bad idea to delete unity altogether.
The site is riddled with questions related to that.

Ok, so I wont. But it still bugs me that I can't set it as default :(

jrg
It was possible to set the default session on a user-by-users basis...
you could also kill the option for Unity in the global lightdm config, but that's not recommended.

2:31 PM
lightgdm or lighdm? (not picking just not sure if it is the same thing) :)

jrg
lightdm - gdm is something different. :)

Use a calendar as desktop wallpaper http://askubuntu.com/questions/77065/use-a-calendar-as-desktop-wallpaper #desktop

@jrg hehe sorry :P

jrg
No worries, I think everyone gets confused about that.

hey @jrg what does this command do? pcregrep -M "0mgN00b dealt.*to .*\n.*Trauma dealt.* " *.txt | wc -l

jrg
2:45 PM
Not sure.
where'd you get that...?

i just made it up
i mean i am writing
i want to know about that \n

jrg
looks like it's part of the line break.

A: How can I search for a multiline pattern in a file ? Use pcregrep

OliSo I discovered pcregrep which stands for Perl Compatible Regular Expressions GREP. For example, you need to find files where the '*name' variable is immediatelly followed by the '*description' variable: find . -iname '*.py' | xargs pcregrep -M '_name.*\n.*_description' Tip: you need to inclu...

how can cricket be a kitten? o.O
or you named it cricket?

jrg
SO CUTE.

2:49 PM
@jokerdino Named her cricket :)

nice. cricket is one of my favourite games XD

Oli
@MarcoCeppi Like a lot of kittens, she's a lot faster than your shutter speed :)

haha, yes she is

Oli
And I like the scratch on your left hand. Plenty more where they came from. I'm covered in scratches and bites.

That was actually from another kitten we looked at adopting

Oli
2:58 PM
I don't think I could look at kittens and turn them down. I'd just end up with a whole load of kittens.

We had a hard time choosing

Oli
WHY CHOOSE?! GET 9!

haha, we almost adopted two

Oli
If you're going to have a girlcat, and you might want another cat in the future, get another one while she's young.
The stroppy bag of fur we have sitting in our lounge still hasn't got used to the fact that the new kitten isn't an impostor trying to kill us all (well he is a bit) and that he lives here now. She gets very cross with him.

hm nice people
i need to find a way to search for multiple lines
example:
I am going home.
I came back.
I am going back.
I need to search how many of "I am going home.*\n.*I am going back" in a directory

Oli
3:09 PM
I know I'm abusing the semantic here but do you need to count both at once? Can you go back if you haven't gone home first?

ok the thing is it is an example. it is not how the actual file looks like

I have six right now. :D

Oli
@OctavianDamiean Kittens? Nice people? Homes?

Kittens.
Well technically I have five kittens and the mommie cat.

Oli
That's enough to put them on a flat surface, tip the surface and have a Catalanche. I'm jealous.

jrg
3:13 PM
I've got a kitten and then this huge fat almost overweight beast. hehe.

obese cats?

jrg
And I keep waking up to dead mice by my door, most likely caught by the fat one. :P

One is sitting on my chest purring like crazy.

@Oli would this work? I am going home.*\n.*I am going back && I am going home.*\n\n.*I am going back (where \n is added incrementally until a certain times)
not my intention to silence you all. :P

3:32 PM
@Oli when is the next EMEA meeting?
also, did I leave you a testimonial?

jrg
22 hours ago, by Oli
The postponed Ubuntu EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) membership meeting will now happen on the 10th Nov 8pm UTC. Anyone who can't make it to that will have their name carried over to December's meeting.

jrg
Hm, how do I launch a ubuntu AMI on ec2?
Can I do that through the AWS mananger...?

yeah
you can just click in the gui
or it's like ec2-start-something

jrg
So I search here - cloud.ubuntu.com/ami, get the ami ID?

3:39 PM
there's a convenience tool in eucatools
I forget what it is though
that let's you just cli search

jrg
ok.

oh nice
clicking on the AMI link takes you to the console
I never knew that

4:00 PM
Hey @JorgeCastro you can try e17 for long trips, it's rather light and still useable.

no thanks.

jrg
Is e17 in the repos? :P

yes it is :)
@Jorge k

jrg
Hey Jorge, who's the Ubuntu cloud Evangelist? curses stupid typos

me
oh you mean the official "Cloud Evangelist"
the position is still open
I am filling in though, on my way to Silicon Valley cloudcamp today (I'm on the plane)

jrg
4:04 PM
Ah, ok. Was curious, since AWS' console keeps trying to push Suse on me. :P
And I figured Canonical should try to uh, fix that. :P

yeah
we've been trying to fix that for a long time
IMO just get cloud-utils
it's all you need

Hello all
@jrg Wait, you have a creditcard?

jrg
Yeah, I'd do that, but the client said otherwise. :P
@AmithKK this is for a contract.

@JorgeCastro Works at canonical, right?

jrg
Yup, he does.

4:08 PM
What is his work?

jrg
Community stuff.

heh another person posted while I was posting with the same answer :P

Cool!
@jrg Shouldnt we be training @RolandTaylor to restart the bot(incase we both are not @2buntu)??

jrg
Well, the bot isn't essential. He's more of a gimmick

k

jrg
I don't see us there, even though the bug report says we're there now..

Oli
We're at the bottom

jrg
OHYAY IT CAME THROUGH. :D
Yeah, my cache must have been filled or something.
I dislike that "No registration required" - means we'll have even MOAR dead questions... :P

Oli
Thanks, chat. That's tiny.

the "no reg required" thing is all over AU itself, heh
I won't complain about any links to AU

4:23 PM
Now we need to get our own tab :)

Q: change defaults

armani want to create a custom distro. i want to change some default that they could be seen on my live disk: 1) change default icon pack to faenza-ambiance 2) change default start up apps to dockey & synapse & weather & blueman 3) change default shell(GUI) to gnome3.2 4) change default th...

dupe - stubbornness :)

@MarcoCeppi one thing I forgot in the integration session
mentioning that we have ads.

Oh, crap. That would have been good

hey did we assign lfaraone to have bounties be announceable over IRC?
because you know, he's a debian and ubuntu developer
maybe he can hook us up with an update for stackapplet and the lens

We assigned him to talk to IRC about putting announcements from the twitter stream in there

4:30 PM
k
it'd be a nice value add to bounties

yeah, def

Oli
What do the IRC and Forums support communities think about us?

No one from the forums council was at UDS
I didn't hear any nay saying from IRC people
In fact lfaraone is on IRC council IIRC

The overall impression I got from people who knew of Ask Ubuntu was positive
I even caught people I had never seen before answering questions on the site during a break

4:34 PM
@JorgeCastro Couldnkt he just implement a bot that formats a twitter feed and posts it?

they have a ton of bots for IRC already
I bet it's just adding the RSS feed or somesuch

jrg
Yeah, it'd be easy with the RSS feed.

Right

Oli
Wouldn't it be better just to use the RSS feed that the Twitter bot uses? Rather than copying over what the twitter bot does to the posts.

@Oli That's what they'll probably do
Just use the Twitter feed

Oli
4:35 PM
Sigh. The time I took to write that, three other people say it.

jrg
Except the twitter bot doesnt use an RSS feed (afaik)

actually, I don't care /how/ they do it tbh
anything to get more eyeballs!

jrg
just that they do it.

jrg
What's the default username for a ec2 AMI?

4:43 PM
ubuntu/ubuntu

ok i am not here.

jrg
thanks.

sooo, let's look if the xrandr bug is fixed in 3.2-rc1 :D
to whoever's interested :-)

hey nice guys. can you explain why this question was actually closed? askubuntu.com/questions/67914/…

@Lekenstyn "with a rep like that" - wth? People can have lapses in memory...
Especially when they've just gotten started for the day and are busy :)

4:55 PM
meh, no change. xrandr calls still take too long and wireless is gone. :-(

@RolandTaylor what happened? o.O

nothing much
just a mistake on my part was handled badly as usual
"With a rep like that you should know better about the dangers of riding ponies without a harness"
I mean... come on, I'm human.

yeah. with 20k+ reps like that... :P
just take it easy on g+ please :)
