but i have an assignment to hand in tmrw morning :s

jrg
ok, i'm stuck. Does ec2 have a way to open up all ports for a VPC ec2 instance (not just 22 and 80)?

@jokerdino I won't be writing on G+ about it no worries :D
I'm in a better mood and I'm not fighting with a particular someone today :)

that is great news. everyone is nice to me :D

5:02 PM
heh :)

I need to read man pages more often...
I've become to GUI dependent (even though I use the command line often)...

@RolandTaylor Yes, yes you should!

That way Leky won't have reason to scold me again :D
/rant off
Unity: y u no break?!

i am so loving the ubuntu font in Gdocs. :D

@jokerdino Chromium, Firefox, Internet Explorer 6 etc

5:12 PM
I wish there was an open source alternative for google chrome in windows
like chromium in linux

no chromium for windows?

no.

jrg
I think Chromium is for windows as well...

/methinks same as @jrg

jrg
He's right.
there isn't one.

5:14 PM
O.o

ok for a few seconds, i thought i was wrong.
i want to meet ubuntu community members for singapore / india
the thing is i dont know if there are any :/

@jokerdino Wow! your in india?
Awesome!

Not yet. :p
I am coming home next week

Where do you live?

5:18 PM

There is no Chromium for windows, they use the Canary builds instead.
@jokerdino oh awesome!

canary builds are for google chrome as well

@jokerdino Awesome!

awesome for what? o.O

5:19 PM
@jokerdino no, they are only for Google Chrome (tmk)

jrg
they're chrome only.

Chrome Only!

@jokerdino well for me, cause Singapore is an awesome country, and because Joseph Prince is from Singapore :)

@jokerdino Singapore == awesome

oh cool.

Can you answer this? Change jdownloader icon of the launcher http://askubuntu.com/questions/76093/change-jdownloader-icon-of-the-launcher #unity

wow. FF version 8 released.

BBT

5:25 PM
bye @AmithKK
@RolandTaylor I saw your G+ posts about ubuntu education software. What software are actually there? (I am not on Ubuntu now so yeah..)

For starters, there are quiz/test creation apps - I personally have used one from the KDE-Edu project (forgot the name off hand), there are various chemistry apps (periodic tables, chemical "calculators" etc), and much more.

hmm
need to know how good they work. for that i need to try them out... :/

Q: Unity wont start

Sarvesh Ladi was messing on google to find a solution to my query i wanted to set different wallapapers to different workspaces and i found this and tried it Ubuntu Forums now i cant see unity interface at launch at login everytime! i can open up termianl and sudo open ccsm and enable unity... not only ...

too localized!

@JorgeCastro I have personally answered a dozen of those types... It is a dupe.
askubuntu.com/questions/77188/… the latest of those varieties.

yeah I can't find it
this is the one where they uncheck the unity plugin or something

jrg
5:39 PM

Q: Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears

jrgWhen I login, nothing happens. I am presented with my desktop wallpaper. No Dash, no Launcher, nothing.

they're all dupes of that. :P

they dont do it manually. when conflicts occur, the unity plugin gets unchecked.

Should we start a generalized question

it is around somewhere

@jokerdino well for me they were pretty good (most of them). They are what I would term professional software.
However, I can't speak for your taste in software so I suggest you use them yourself :D
Maybe I'll do some posts about em.

nice work on that generalized question jrg/oli
/me upvotes all around

5:41 PM
@RolandTaylor yeah sure you should!
what on earth. Mr purple man is on AU?

Yep :D

Oli
@JorgeCastro Thank you - that just got me the necromancer badge

hah, nice!
I am really looking forward to the post-release AU dump so we can really get a handle on the dupes/junk

please do so.

jrg
I almost don't want to do anything until then, because it'll be so darn easy once we get a dump.

5:48 PM
work harder boy. work harder.
i need to do catch up until then.
when is the translation for precise opening up?
did someone just dug out my question?
/me does a happy dance.
what is 1047 doing here? is it my network rep?

Oli
@jokerdino yes

thank you.
i am guessing in two days time, i will get my first silver badge :D

jrg
Can we kill this? It's pretty useless - askubuntu.com/questions/2134/…

6:04 PM
I got no idea what the question is talking about.

jrg
Exactly.
Not a real question.

6:17 PM
/me is reading on Mark Shuttleworth's biography.
Mark went to space? :O
/me is shocked.

Q: Why is Ubuntu default to allow everyone access to other users folders, Admin or Standard?

ShaneWhy can other users see all my files by default, admin or standard users? Surely only the Public folder should have a default share, with the option to share other folders with users and groups as the owner pleases?

Barely a real question - but I salvaged it with an answer :)

Now that I know Mark was a space tourist, his name "Shuttleworth" makes complete sense.
I know what sabdfl means. Hah!
mark went to Antarctica? This dude is crazy

Anyone have any outstanding bugs for StackApplet?

No. not for me.
Other than the self notifier bug.

6:33 PM
@jokerdino he's not my sabdfl
there's only one of those for me :)
And you can't see Him :)

I didnt say he is sabdfl. i only said i know what it actually meant. :P

5 votes left!
@jokerdino lol

arrivederci, silvio! berlusconi about to resign. \o/

hello

@htorque doesnt even mather, the man controls the media and has such a large fortune that he will rule the same way puttin still rules russia even while being "only" PM

jrg
Hm, I suppose I need to set a password for the mysql user on a production site, eh? :P

yes, you do

jrg
7:07 PM
although since i'm removing mysql as soon as the rest of the LAMP stack is done anyway..... I'll leave it.

@brunopereira81 i don't know enough about berlusconi, but he always appeared to be more of a mob muppet than the powerful guy that putin is (of course he got his connections too...).

Politics.
I would say Putin is more powerful and famous than Berlusconi.

Q: Lid closed power option doesn't work anymore

BramAfter upgrade to 11.10 the lid close option in the power settings doesnt seem to work anymore. Only options now are hibernate or suspend, but both don't seem to work. I now have to shut down manualy. Any ideas ?

Is that really a dupe?

it is not a dupe

jrg
Interesting, my printer shows up in 10.04, but not in 11.10....

7:19 PM
@jokerdino both like to hunt:

is there a tag for desktop applications?

:>

Smart work. @htorque Thanks for hunting this pic. :P
is it very common to post a question and to answer it yourself?
why do some people do it deliberately?

jrg
@jokerdino it's perfectly OK.
Posted by Jeff Atwood on July 1st, 2011

The FAQ has contained one key bit of advice from the very beginning:

It’s also perfectly fine to ask and answer your own question, as long as you pretend you’re on Jeopardy! — phrase it in the form of a question.

So …

if you have a question that you already know the answer to

if you’d like to document it in public so others (including yourself) can find it later

it is OK to ask, and answer, your own question on a relevant Stack Exchange site.

To be crystal clear, it is not merely OK to ask and answer your own question, it is explicitly encouraged. …

hm great. thanks!

jrg
7:26 PM
We also enjoy our double rep for both a good question and a good answer, but that's besides the point. :P

Very well then.

Can a mod pin that please?

pin what?
that self question and answer part?

qn: how can i embed questions and posts in this chat?

jrg
7:30 PM
Just paste it by itself on a single line

Q: Is there a desktop application for launchpad?

jokerdinoI was looking at the Launchpad and came to this page (see the screenshot below). I started wondering if there are any desktop applications for using Launchpad without the necessity of a web browser. Are there any?

Oh cool. Thanks!

hi all, any suggestions on which widget application to use for a google rss reader on my 11.10 desktop?

I believe there might be a screenlet for that
You can even have it embed google reader directly in a screenlet

what functionality are you looking for?

7:36 PM
umm, to be able to read
:p

so desktop app for google reader? or just the notification type?

desktop app

jrg
may I suggest a chromium webapp? works like a charm. :)

may be this is useful omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/03/… Not sure if they still develop it though. :P

well, before I try to install anything I need to figure this out. I can't launch my Dash Home by clicking the unity icon or via super key. Unity icon bar flickers then nothing happens....

7:41 PM
that is a bug with corner case

whats the fix?

so, reboot?

log out and login

A: Is there a desktop application for launchpad?

ajmitchThis is commonly used for a number of command-line tools, such as those in the ubuntu-dev-tools package, There is also a desktop client called Ground Control which mostly focuses on bugs & branches.

@jokerdino I thought I'd join the crowd of people answering ;)
oh I know, I should put the LP lens in there...

oh cool thanks

Q: How can I install a program on Ubuntu?

cbergI'm new to Ubuntu and know installing programs only from window. It is very easy there: Just double-click the setup.exe and the things start. But how do I install a program on Ubuntu?

iz dupe!

@ajmitch Excellent answer. I am guessing there are no full blown desktop apps for launchpad yet.. Hmm

No, there was one being developed awhile ago that sort of died off
I was going to try & work on it at some point, it was mostly focused on distro development as well
It was called leonov, but isn't up to date with LP changes over the last couple of years

I just looked it up. You are right.

please let me retag

:D
Oh I didn't know you created it :P
It's a funny tag :D

o.O
I didnt create the tag.

@Explorer hey hey!
@jokerdino oh

@jrg why you ask questions and you answer them yourself?

8:10 PM
np

@RolandTaylor hi hi !

jrg
To share my knowledge.

No, to satisfy your multiple personalities :D.

jrg
So that other folks don't have to go through all the trouble I did.

8:11 PM
@RolandTaylor I have read about meta tags. So, I don't create just tags. :)

jrg
@RolandTaylor sssshhhh.... that was supposed to BE A SECRET YA FOOL. :P

@jokerdino oh cool :D
@jrg lawl
@Explorer <750

@jrg you could just wait for others and see if they can answer
@RolandTaylor <753

what is with these random numbers with a lesser than sign prefix?

jrg
8:12 PM
@Explorer and put them through the trouble of solving a problem I already know how to solve? shakes head Doesn't make much sense. :)
@jokerdino they be chmod'in each other or something. :P

LOL :P

@jrg you answering your own questions makes a lot of sense? please!

<777
And what @jrg does is fine :D, I do it too ;)

It's a way to share information that others may need, and also so we can avoid duplicates of some common questions
@Explorer (He has multiple personalities, so let's act like it's normal)
@jrg tell @jrg that @jrg is @jrg in real life

alright, this reader looks good, but the ppa key isn't found when I try to add the repo, any suggestions? plus.google.com/101102514627642073022/posts/jS7kqZKLQi6

jrg
@Explorer I've hashed this over multiple times with that chatroom - that is, my short attentio- SQUIRREL span and my habit of mumbles to himself talking to myself. :P

8:16 PM
heh people please make some sense.

Hi!
What's up?
Nothing much :P
u?
ha same here :D
just chillin with some music :D
ME TOO!

jrg
@jokerdino Ok, I'll try to make sense.

d'OH! we're so alike!
:)

@sadmicrowave so the problem is you cant install the PPA? :P

@jokerdino indeed

8:18 PM
Didn't you want a desktop app?

@jokerdino I did, but I'm having the same problem with installing the screenlets repo

@RolandTaylor it's a way too ear reputation , don't think we're not aware of your purpose

@Explorer that's not why I do it :D

@RolandTaylor me to

oh I don't know. Looks like something wrong somewhere. @sadmicrowave

8:20 PM
For example, my Ubuntu-Tweak question/answer was cause I got tired of typing it over and over and over and over (did it like 3 times in one week or something :P)
So I got mad and wrote the canonical question :D

@jokerdino any other way to install screenlets?

without the PPA?
Are you on 11.10?

sudo apt-get install screenlets

8:22 PM
I am faster than you :P

jrg
ninja'd because of network lag

I was closing tabs

hmm how about this?

@RolandTaylor what you do makes sense , but there was a question @jrg asked - he answered plus @Alvar and he got more up-votes

"Is there a desktop application for Youtube?"
i think i am going to create all sort of nonsensical questions and answer them myself

8:25 PM
@Explorer lol he does the same thing as me, but sometimes people answer those questions faster than we can :P

everything you do makes sense, let's say

And ofc people upvote the better answer
@Explorer :3
unintelligible

@RolandTaylor not always

I shall leave now, since one of the practices that I hold dear is being challenged, and I am not in a mood to argue over it. ;)

@jrg aw come on!

@jrg go to 2buntu

I'm defending you!
@Explorer that's better :D

Q: How do I install software using the Ubuntu Software Center?

jrgThe title says it all. I'd like to know how I can install software - an example is the Chromium web browser.

8:29 PM
look at that innocent face of @jrg

Oh see what you mean, but it's still a good thing :)

@RolandTaylor it was for the fact that people upvote the better answer

We need questions like that, and it's fine if the original poster answers (and does a good job). Alvar's answer covers older versions of Ubuntu - not sure why it got less votes. Probably it came later than jrg's answer so it got less votes so far (the first answer often gets more votes in the long run)

Bounty offered: MP3 Player: "This does not look like a partition table" http://askubuntu.com/questions/76197/mp3-player-this-does-not-look-like-a-partition-table #devices

@RolandTaylor there was someone else who could answer your question, that's my point
we tend to do it on EL&U when we made sure there's no one else who knows the answer

Q: Is there a Unity equivalent of the GNOME panel 'show desktop' applet?

melodramI miss the symbol to show the desktop with just one click when using Unity instead of the classic desktop. Is there a possibility to get the "Show Desktop" applet or an equivalent? There is a bug report on: Bug #681348 ("Add 'show me the desktop' keyboard or Unity dock shortcut") Can people...

A: Where is showdesktop button on 11.10?

Roland TaylorThere is no show desktop button in Unity 2D, unfortunately, but you can achieve one using the same methods as you would in Unity 3D (see below) or by using a dock such as Avant Window Navigator. The first is an indicator: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/10/show-desktop-indicator-for-ubuntu-quick.htm...

A downvote without a comment :D - don't you just love when people leave you clueless? (it wasn't root45, there was no downvote when he commented)
afk now :D

that was me
but my connection is flaking out

@JorgeCastro Aren't the questions slightly different? One is for Unity 2d and the actual one is Unity.

so my comment thing kept timing out

@RolandTaylor stop talking about that person , there are great people available here , e.g. @RolandTaylor

@jokerdino unity launchers are the same
