12:00 AM
@ajmitch Fancy... I'll go edit.

rawhide is ridiculously raw though
from what I've heard/read

bye :D

@ajmitch: I believe I have got the packages ready - the last one is just about to build for the PPA.

12:19 AM
@GeorgeEdison ok

What's the next step?

I should really get around to renewing my passport
beg for some poor person to review & upload them?

Where would I go to do that?

I'll probably end up doing it

:)
Is there any further information I need to provide you with?

12:22 AM
Where I can find the packages for review?

The packages are all in here: launchpad.net/~askubuntu-tools/+archive/ppa
This document explains each of them.

OK, they look like autobuilt from recipe packages. I don't think that these should necessarily be native packages (packages without a separate upstream tarball)

So what do you need me to do? Create releases for them and add .tar.gz files as downloads?

Generally there's a separate between upstream development & distro packaging - these can sort of fall into a grey area because they're for a site set up for the distro
Before you make those changes I'll check other stuff with them

12:40 AM
@jrg: I couldn't resist either.

jrg
heh, nice
I would upvote you, but I don't have the required 15 "karma".

@GeorgeEdison it would help if you didn't repeat the same long description for every package - I can't make sense of what each package is for from the descriptions

jrg
link to alien?
OOH, they are ahead of SE in that they already have a G+ Plus1 button

@ajmitch I can definitely fix that if you want - can the audataserver source package at least use the same description for the three binary packages it produces?

@GeorgeEdison no, that would make no sense

12:45 AM
Okay, I'll have those fixed then.

they're separate packages for a reason - you can often share at least some of the description & add a small section explaining what each package is

updating descriptions...
...and there. All of the descriptions have now been updated and pushed to their respective Bazaar branches.

@GeorgeEdison RE: fedora stuff
you'd need to migrate back to systray, I don't think Fedora uses AppIndicators

AppIndicators have a fallback

@jrg They sure do.
I wrote one (a custom fallback module).
Check this out :)
It emulates the part of AppIndicators that StackApplet uses by using Gtk.StatusIcon in its place.

Proposal: With Ubuntu 12.04 the disk size is increasing to 750 MB. Why not go full bang and use the rest of the DVD space for drivers, thereby eliminating a lot of compatibility frustrations that are likely to deter new users?

@William DVD? You can find lots of CDs that have a capacity >= 750 MB.

Hi people!
hey people, how does SE keep itself afloat?

10:03 AM
@jokerdino they run ads, mainly on stack overflow. also, there's a careers.stackoverflow.com which helps to finance the SE network

hm thanks for the answer

On careers 2.0, you can pay 350$ to run 1 job listing for 30 days, 500$ to search the candidate databases (CVs) for a week

it is kinda like a job portal

yes, that's right. and posting your own CV to it is free
it's very cool

nice idea

Q: Firefox 6 for Ubuntu 6.02

kinda here
i ticked your comment up

Yesterday I suggested edits with links to Ask Ubuntu to ubuntu tags on other Stack Exchange sites. I don't think it will have any major effect on how many question we get but it might direct a few users here. It might a good practice to do that for any strongly ubuntu related tag on other sites.
For reference:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/tags/ubuntu/info
http://stackoverflow.com/tags/ubuntu/info
http://serverfault.com/tags/ubuntu/info
http://programmers.stackexchange.com/tags/ubuntu/info

good work there
i cant see any of your gravatars. aaaaah

I guess we don't want to step on any other sites toes but having questions end up in the right places is in everyone's interest.
@jokerdino please don't make unnecessary repetition of messages
I forgot to mention tex.stackexchange.com/tags/ubuntu/info earlier.

not sure what they're doing about the old ones though, or their ads.

I think they are trying to convert it too.

jrg
yeah, but so far I haven't seen any progress.
@GeorgeEdison the dpkg process hangs on unpacking the new stackapplet

Morning all!

1:06 PM
Morning @sadmicrowave

Oli
Not really. "ceases development" also means "won't maintain" which means "everybody who dares use Flash until it dies will get mucky computer AIDS".

eewwww AIDS

Whats an AIDS?

Oli
And people are going to keep using it for some time because HTML5 doesn't do everything Flash does. Companies that need some sort of control over how their videos are watched have been able to use Adobe FMS to stream, livestream and encrypt bidirection audio and video. The HTML5 spec doesn't even solidify on a single codec (FFS), let alone specify how videos get there (past progressive download).
2
So if Flash dies completely, and browsers don't improve things for people that require streaming and (shock horror) DRM, that just means people will move onto the next best thing: SilverLight. I don't think I need to spell out why that's worse for us.

Just for the sake of continuing education, what are the reasons SilverLight is "worse for us"

silverlight is developed my MS
So, it probably won't be supporting LInux.

very true

and ms==windows==no linux support

it does "work" on Linux through Moonlight, which is built on Mono and is great tech.

1:27 PM
Mono

the problem though is that it's like playing a terrible game of cat and mouse

i dont want to kill kittens

Mono isn't as bad as people say - if we are honest with ourselves much of the "RA RA RA MONO IS BAD" Is childish.

jrg
@jokerdino Moonlight is around, but it's like trying to fly a plane drunk - it doesn't work.

Q: No graphics card recognition

MortenUbuntu doesn't seem to recognize the graphics card on my new Samsung rv515. In desktop preferences I cannot chose widescreen resolution (or any alternative resolutions, actually). I saw some supposed solutions posted online, but I cannot use the descriptions because they're written in pure Ubuntu...

this is a dupe and I just remembered - we must have covered this a million times :D
gah stupid search! I can't find an original :(

:(
when is the data dump coming?

not sure

Lets see, probably first week of December

The earlier the better. :D

They do it about every 2-3 months

1:51 PM
anyone know of a good photo manager for itouch / iphone4+ devices that will help delete photos and their thumbnails . shotwell doesn't seem to delete the thumbnails
it will do imports ok though but....

F-Spot?

F-Spot :)

Roland is right :P

Or gtkpodder (I think it is)

Or Wine based Picasa?

1:52 PM
there is some kind of Hpod or something too (but it's old)

Conclusion: There are too many alternatives

pick one :P

@MarcoCeppi and @RolandTaylor, I used to use f-spot but dropped it because of some bug but that was a while ago. It will delete the thumbnail files as well as the original photos at the same time?
if so, then I'm totally switching from shotwell

Oli
@RolandTaylor That's true to a point but the only reason (under my comparison with Flash) with why people would need SilverLight is DRM/streamed video. Moonlight can't handle DRM video because it (legally, AFAIK) can't break the DRM that SL uses to handle videos. That might change in the future but it would take a big change in Microsoft's approach to Linux, and probably a licensing change in how Mono works.

wb @jrg

jrg
2:02 PM
Thank you @jokerdino.

What are the alternatives for flash on mobile platform?

jrg
hello from the land of Windows 8 - land of the crappy fonts, horrible trackpad drivers and even worse speed.
For flash? HTML5 or native.

@Oli tmk they already have licensed codecs from microsoft to allow them to do the whole drm thing, but I could be wrong

Oli
@RolandTaylor Netflix is the main issue people have with Moonlight (for DRM). Wiki still reckons it's unsupported: mono-project.com/Moonlight/…

oh I see
@MarcoCeppi ignore these dissenting voices on G+! Beer it is!
You know you want to

Three male programmers were in the bathroom standing at the urinals.
The first programmer finishes, walks over to the sink to wash his hands.
He then proceeds to dry his hands very carefully. He uses paper towel after paper towel and ensures that every single spot of water on his hands is dried.
Turning to the other two, he says, “At Microsoft, we are trained to be extremely thorough.”
The second programmer finishes his task at the urinal and he proceeds to wash his hands. He uses a single paper towel and makes sure that he dries his hands using every available portion of the paper towel.

Listening to The number of the beast since, I hit 1.666 in reputation and I finished the 6.66 assignment in my math book!
why did someone ping me yesterday?! @explorer ?!

hey guys, quick question.
rsync -r test1/ test2 is the same as rsync -r test1/ test2/, right?

hi @Alvar

jrg
@Evan depends

It may have been me I think I pinged you by accident or something

jrg
in the second example, test2 has to be a directory
if it's a file, then it shouldn't work.

6:19 PM
@jrg, which means in the second example if test2 didn't exist or weren't a directory the command would fail?

jrg
@Evan I think so - it might make it for you.
Not 100% sure, and I"m not near my ubuntu box otherwise I'd go for it

@jrg, thanks for your help! that clears it up for me and I can play around with it to

Q: Uninstalled Ubuntu, no GRLDR?

user32965So I'm a big fat idiot. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my school's laptop, and here's come the time that I have to turn it back in. I wrote GRUB to the Master Boot Record, thinking it wasn't going to be permanent. So, fast forward to yesterday. I decided to hell with this, and popped in my Windo...

wth?

1 hour later…
8:21 PM
I need some quick help
my shut down menu doesn't show on startup
and my clock is gone

@MarcoCeppi it looks like you forgot your signature on Oli's wiki page, if that was you

I jsut have my system indicator
in my upper panel
ideas?
@StefanoPalazzo got any commands or programs?
to start / run

Aye, it was
Has it started yet?

help!
it's really annoying, I just did a reboot...

Oh, it's tomorrow

8:25 PM
yes :)
@Alvar sorry, I was googling a bit but didn't turn up anything useful
lots of people recommend to purge indicator-messages, doesn't seem right to me
there is a command to reset the panel,
I don't know it, and it might only work for gnome2, but you could try to find it and give it a go

@StefanoPalazzo i am on gnome 2 ;)
just took a screenshot

oh cool

this is all I have
stackapplet, network and sytem usage

you can try this, but beware it'll delete your entire panel config:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

@StefanoPalazzo the system usage app chrashes a lot and when it does I can't go online until a reboot is done.
@StefanoPalazzo what will I have left?

8:30 PM
hopefully your panel will look like it did when you first installed ubuntu

oh man
I just found out what it was...
I right clicked it and chose "add" and I just added the stuff that was gone, and now everything is back to normal
thanks :D

oh my

a bit strange yes..

the german ubuntu wiki is fantastic
90 per cent of the time, google sends me there, and they have the answer I'm looking for
it's probably responsible for a good chunk of my answers as well :P

too bad it's german :\

I'll just google translate it with chrome! :D

that's how it's done

@StefanoPalazzo no :/
@StefanoPalazzo arbeits could mean work something...

it does

it's similar to the swedish word arbete (==work)

it's the workspace-switcher

@StefanoPalazzo ehm, it's a very long word
almost the longest i've seen
(I've seen the longest package name, it's longer)
someone should translate this page into english (with all the pictures)
because it's AWESOME! :D
