2:00 PM
@Almo - you happy to linkedIn the shit outta me?

8 hours would be too much

@AlexM. welcome to my world.
9 hour days, 5 days a week woop woop

:(

It's not bad by any standard.
Glad its not more than that but plenty of people work 11 hour days here and do it 6 days a week.

yeah that sucks
the advantage at my current workplace is that nobody asks me explicitly to put in more time

2:01 PM
we're 7-hour days here

and I am also allowed to fill in the hours anytime I want

@Almo Is that 5 day weeks?

so I usually sleep until 10AM and only go to work after that

@Blue what you mean?
yeah 5-day weeks, 7 hour days

That sounds pretty good :)

Jon
2:02 PM
i'm allowed to do 4 days @ 9.5 hour days.

I think I'd like that

Jon
I did it for a year
It is a long time to spend at work every day.

yes

For anyone interested in Linking ^

2:04 PM
sent blue

@Blue I'd gladly do it but... "YOU STILL HAVEN'T REPLIED TO X'S INVITATION ON LINKED IN"
2 times a week

Cheers all,

Jon
i don't have a linked in.

@Jon I only started it recently as I started getting more serious about trying to advance my career.

watch out for link-whores

2:06 PM
@Almo that is one blue shirt there.

they will connect just for the connection then ignore you

^+1 This happens a lot.

I had a recrutiing specialist connect. then he ignored my calls about maybe getting a job through his company

Jon
heh..

I learned how to unlink people. it's not easy, but it can (and should) be done.

Jon
2:07 PM
just seems like a site people would abuse for spamming

it can be useful
but like facebook, it requires care
@Blue blue is in fact my favorite color
engagement ring is a tension-set sapphire.

Aha! Good choice @Almo, good choice indeed. My engagement ring was a Sapphire aswell!!
searches for link

@Blue, sent a request on linkedin

@radical - Kernel engineer. Respect.
@Almo Here it is:

Jon
You are an engineer for the kernel?

2:11 PM
that's pretty cool though it looks a bit like a woman's ring
unless you mean the one you gave to her
mine is the one I wear.

It's the one I bought her.

ok I get it. that is really fucking cool man

I have no ring to wear.
Yet.

:)

ahem.. I moved out recently, trying a startup with a friend. I haven't updated my profile as yet

2:12 PM
@Almo I don't think I have ever spent so long making a decision in my life.

heh I can understand that
my wife's engagement ring was a diamond, and we clamped two sapphires around it for the wedding ring

Only 22 months til the (planned) wedding though.

ONLY

That's awesome man.

not enough time to plan, man

2:13 PM
Seriously - Ours is going to be simple.

cool

Jon, I was working on linux kernel at SUSE labs

We're not churching it, we have a venue in mind, my surrogate dad is sorting the catering (professional Chef) and the ceremony is a humanist one.

music drop

@Blue sounds good to me :)
finally putting ratings on Autechre's Confield album in my iTunes.
it's uh... strange.
this line from a review of that album is what interested me in Autechre in the first place "There are faint glimpses of the melancholy beauty of Autechre's early work, but this experimental, rigidly academic work is a record to respect, not enjoy."
so I started plowing through the whole catalog in chronological order. It's taken me years, but it's been an interesting trip
A line from a review of the album after Confield: "After an LP and several EPs of baffling, beat-damaged digital concrete, Autechre was definitely due for a change."

2:23 PM
I don't know why but I have seriously gotten stuck into an EDM albumn.

that's a long list of stuff on there

in unity if you double middle button click on a gameobject the camera in the editor jumps to that object
but if you do the same with an empty space, it won't jump

@Blue Sent you a linkedin request under the same name as here.

@AlexM. No animation on the linear one in the top! How am I supposed to know how a linear easing function looks?!

@William'MindWorX'Mariager shit you are right!
I should let the author know
that his website is a complete and utter shit

2:26 PM
UTTER SHIT!

YES

@DeanKnight I nearly thorugh SRC was SRK from Shoryuken.com

so I've just added the last option in the menu there.

@Almo - that long list is completely free to listen to and bought by donation.

when booting the game, users see the top image, they can click Options to get to the econd
(cool blue)

2:29 PM
Some of those songs are soothing, others grunge, others euphoric and even more so have a great beat.

my question is, how should I notify users of the new option?
Was thinking of the Star thing from some games where new options have a star by them until the user clicks them

Make it orange

so it would be Options* somehow and *Pause before Epidemic Intensify step

Like the title
Colours always grab attention.

@Blue Haha. Yeah, I not much of a fighter-game player. SRC is just a leaner Lockheed Martin. :)

2:30 PM
that's an idea
might even be easy to program
adding the stars was going to be tricky

When you want something to be outstanding - colours are nearly the right answer all the time.
Only acceptions are colour blind users, but you can solve that with making it animate in someway or adjusting the brightness to compensate.

glow effect, and a color

The trouble with asterisks is people associate them with an addendum or appendix note in writing.
So they look around for the addendum associated with the options page.

though studies show glowing doesn't attract attention in a visually noisy area, but this is a very plain page

So unless you put on the bottom (*New options available) they won't know it's significance.

2:33 PM
true

However - turn it from blue to orange and instantly they know there has been a change and are intrigued to explore it.
Especially when doing it with the same colours as the title which holds importance over the rest of the UI.

maybe if they start the game several times without going to options, do a popup :)

+1

It's an important option for hardcore players, so it defaults to off
making it trickier

or a balloon pointing to the options button saying "New options are available"

2:34 PM
yeah
that's a good idea
people dismiss popups without reading them, I find

Again keeping the orange if they haven't explored.
I'm just going to sort out my lunch, brb

ok

3:00 PM
hmm if someone reinstalls the app, it will pester them again about the new option
I guess that's normal for this kind of feature

@Blue The... title? I guess.

hi SN

@ShotgunNinja sup nerd

Pip
@AlexM. I already made one :D

cool

Pip
3:08 PM
and committed it to github

oh yeah

my personal favorite from the weird-ass autechre album:

sup nerds

Pip
sup nerd

sup nerd

3:10 PM
man there's no nice way to do this

Pip
anyhow

someone who installs the game new will be told about the "new" option

Pip
@AlexM. should I implement it yet? (I got sent home from school b/c of the meds I am taking for my shoulder)

if I only display the new thing for people who already have prefs saved (preventing the new installers from getting the notice), it could miss people who have deleted the app, but reinstall after the patch

@Pip sure if you want to

Pip
3:11 PM
I am debating that and page scrolling
hm
I want this: humblebundle.com/…

this really sucks

I bought that bundle yesterday and gifted Dredmor to Todders
because I already had it

Pip
have anything else? :P

nope, sorry
@Almo if the message can be dismissed and never shown again, it doesn't really matter

Pip
(I really want The Binding of Issac, going to buy at some point)
hey @ChristianCareaga

3:13 PM
Hey!

Pip
sup?

well, what I had thought of doing was making the Option glow orange, and the option itself glow orange on the options page until they press it
lead them to it
just a message will get ignored, I think

Nothing just waiting for my ride to school
how bout you!

Pip
ah

hm

Pip
3:14 PM
@ChristianCareaga I wrote an event logger last night, and an error handler
pretty much the same code, but they write to different files

@Almo Sounds like a good idea.
What option is this, anyway?

there's an option to make the game stop before reshuffling the infector deck during an epidemic
gives the hardcore players a chance to see where the hotspots are before the epidemic finishes
that suggestion came from one of the game designers, actually

@Pip Yeah i saw the commit!

since it's an expert option, it defaults to off
that means most people will never find it

Pip
@ChristianCareaga :D

3:16 PM
maybe that doesn't matter;
maybe the hard core will notice the release note saying it's changed
maybe they explore options when there are patches.
I don't think I do, and I'm hardcore, so maybe not

Pip
@Almo just remember: don't fuck with Jesus
:P

why not. he's just a guy

Pip
lol, true

:)

Pip
(I'm an atheist :P)

3:18 PM
maybe it's time to implement the News interface
we'll need that eventually
hitting a webservice for news so we can communicate with the players without patching the app

that's cool

ok time for some smoother music. back to dub techno

Guess who's back..
Om nom nom.

Pip
hey wedding guy

And guess who just got 3 job offers.

Pip
3:24 PM
:P
nice!

On his lunch break.

cool blue :)

Pip
describe them!

@Pip I think one of my most useful classes I have used over and over again is my event logger. Love the thing

Pip
:D

3:25 PM
One is a Data Visualisation Engineer - 25-33k
Another is an SQL Data Engineer (I guess normal architecture etc.)
22-30K

this is pounds, I hope

@Almo yes.

ok :)

Pip
:)

And another whilst on the phone about the first is job is a Team Leader for Graduate Engineers as a Front End UX/UI developer.
30-45K...

3:27 PM
neat

Definitely.

45K seems like an honest salary for a developer

Pip
@Blue software devs do not get paid much..... only like $50k

I'm heavily looking at that last one.

sounds interesting

Pip
3:27 PM
45k pounds is good

very

30K seems to low even when converted to $. However, I have heard that people just get paid less in Europe

Pip
$74,290.50

they do

Pip
@DeanKnight yeah, I think so

3:28 PM
I lived in the UK for 4 years. Things were more expensive, but at least you got paid less. :)

Definitely, Taking on Graduates and teaching them the ropes about ACTUAL projects and development whilst showing them how to get the best out of data binding to a UI.
lmao @Almo

@Pip I've been working on this:
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz310/ChristianCareaga/Mountains_zps54edb052.gif?t=1390577220
Everyone here has seen it already though :P

@Almo Ouch

We did enjoy our time there. The pay situation wasn't easy though.

Pip
@ChristianCareaga yep, we know :D
looks cool

3:29 PM
lol didnt know if you saw it ahaha not trying to be annoying posting my damn scrolling haha

That is what makes me nervous about trying to go to Europe as a developer. I was considering trying to target CD projekt Red. But I am not sure how the financial situation would turn out.

Well luckily they are cracking down on that sorta thing depending on where you live - location based pay-addition. To make up for localised living costs in more expensive cities (someone help me with the "official" name for that.)

maybe a popup with the new features, with "OK" and "Remind me later" options.

Pip
idk
@Blue cost of living? idk

though someone installing 1.0.7 after having skipped 1.0.6 will miss the updates from 1.0.6

3:30 PM
@Almo, what language is this again?

there's just no nice way around this

@Blue That is good. I have heard that living costs can vary dramatically.. London I guess is a huge example

what language is what?
the app I'm working on?

Pandemic, yeh.

mostly C++
with some Obj-C to interface with the Apple stuff

3:31 PM
@DeanKnight Edinburgh (where I live) is not far behind.
could never really grasp C++... I always feel like I've missed out not truly learning it.

@Blue That sucks man. I have a bunch of friends pulling very high salaries here in the US in some of the cheapest cost-of-living areas. We have it easy here I guess. Then again, they are also solid developers, so it could be just a good company taking care of their employees.

I try to look at open source libraries that utilise it and never really get it.

@Blue Are the libraries template heavy? I have been doing C++ for years and I am -just- coming around to being comfortable reading templated code. It can be very annoying to read and develop.

@DeanKnight I'm in the #1 clothes retail company in the world (H&M) and I saved them a sum of nearly £8.5M in the last fiscal year through resources and saved man hours. I get 20K...
@Almo - mostly yes. I know the huge advantages to separating files into their headers and class implementations but fuck me it's tricky to read if you weren't making it yourself.

@Blue wow. Come across the pond ;). You would be valuable here for sure.

3:40 PM
@DeanKnight I know I'm valuable, that's why I just got 3 job offers and need to actually have interviews to make it official. However, trying to find a job in IT in the city which hosts the University that invented the Artificial Intelligence degree is a little tricky.

C++ is tricky for sure.
but I'm used to it from years of use in the games industry
but like Dean, I am just starting to use templates

Any advice on what I can do to learn it as a C# orientated developer?

I have found the only reason why Im "getting" templates is because I am writing templated code. Reading it is still a bear.. But reading code in general that isnt written by you is tough.
On top of that, templated code might seem better to you because you can keep implementation and declaration all in one file. I personally separate it out using a .hpp and .inl and including the inl within the hpp.
I have to go atm, but when I get back I can see if I can get a good source for learning templates and C++ in general.

For me, to learn new languages I write a program I've written over and over in each new language I learn: Othello.

Jon
Oh yeah

3:44 PM
So I'd recommend pick something small, that might take you 2-3 hours to write, then try to do it in C++
also this may help
why do some people use backticks as apostrophes? Weird keyboards?

Jon
french.
The french refuse to use apostrophes... an english invention.

you mean actual french? cause I'm in Quebec, and they use apostrophes
looks weird though :)

Jon
yeah, it is just a different apostrophe

IT`S INCORRECT THOUGH!!!

Pip
yeah

Jon
3:52 PM
I agree with you.. but according to our translation guidelines, you need to use the ’ instead of '

I mean backticks
`
you've got... something else there. looks like an actual apostrophe.

Jon
it is an actual french apostrophe

ok
doesn´t.
ah i see
that was copied from someone else
I thought he was using backticks

Jon
looks french :P

the ' is a single quote

Jon
3:55 PM
shit like that breaks forms often.

yeah I bet

Jon
Another stupid french convention...
titles with colons at the end of them, require a space like so :

Pip
guys

yeah

Pip
what are some things that can slow down your game?

Jon
3:57 PM
shitty code

Pip
with improvements

and using << as quotes >>

Bacon on the motherboard.
That'll slow it down.

and not pronouncing half the letters

Jon
bacon for sure

3:57 PM
BACON

Pip
like: running lots of code every frame - improvement: check if the code needs to be run

Jon
check for bacon stuck in the fans

Pip - use listeners in that situation

Jon
@Pip if you are talking optimizing, then you need to run a profiler

^+1

Pip
3:58 PM
just in general

Jon
otherwise you are optimizing blindly.
The least is a stopwatch

Profilers are the god send for optimisation during the last stages of a build.

Jon
Learn to use a profiler
Worth it.
drill down to exactly what is taking the most time
then try to optimize that
Then you will also be able to tangibly say "I optimized my code by 300%"
from a baseline you previously saved
