A: Lowering rep requirement for reviewing activities

Shog9 I think the 3k rep limit for closing votes and reviewing everything is way too high I'm starting to think it's too low. If you haven't spent serious time using the tools available to you, putting you in a situation where you're expected to use them expertly is a bit naive. Review was suppose...

bah, now the guy is talking as if we suggested to remove the tiers altogether
first he goes on about how much junk there is on SO
no shit, SO is meant for junk
second he's one step from saying we need Carmack to review our shit
perhaps a smart system would have been for gd.se meta to choose the tiers
and for any other site, to allow their meta to choose the tiers
meh, even if they changed the system to allow separate tiers
they'd probably be done implementing it way after I'm done getting 3k rep
and I'd be having no satisfaction
I so hate things that are out of my control
they're frustrating

user4704
I don't think he's entirely wrong.

he definitely isn't

user4704
And I don't necessarily think we need reputation limits lowered.

entirely
wrong
I wonder why he's so convinced that reputation actually measures moderation abilities
SO is a great example of how just about any average joe can get over 3k rep

user4704
12:36 AM
But this isn't SO, so by bringing that up as an argument you sort of invalidate your own.

review queues should be unlocked via helpful flags
and reviews made
@JoshPetrie yes, it's not SO
however, we apply SO's rules

user4704
But saying "any average joe can get 3k" on SO and "we should lower the barrier on GDSE because it has low traffic" could be read to imply "we should lower the barrier so any average joe on GDSE can review."

user4704
Which is non-desirable.

@AlexM. It doesn't measure, but it's an indicator

@JoshPetrie well I guess you could read it like that yeah
I wouldn't but maybe that's because I wrote it lol
well, I did post the question, so I did what I could

12:41 AM
By the way, when SuperUser was very new, I used to look for users who were almost to 3k and see if any of their posts were worth upvoting

user4704
Byte has done that.

Byte makes bounties at times

user4704
For a while he would regularly bounty people over the threshold for voting if they had good contributions.

user4704
However, I have an argument against the need to lower reputation thresholds but I'll post it on MSO.

This was before the serial upvoting scripts, too; probably two or three votes is the limit now

user4704
12:42 AM
Yeah, I got hit by the serial voting scripts a lot during the Winter Refactor.

I still think each site's meta should be able to set its own tiers
actually if I think about it, it's a really bad design decision to make it like it is now

12:56 AM
ooh, The Witcher 3 developer mentions they will post the sys reqs soon
but PC users should be ready to save some cash for an upgrade
well I guess it makes sense, the game looks great

user4704
Yeah. I kinda want to play it but then I'd have to play the first two.

it's worth playing them
especially to see the difference between the first and the second
and what a switch in atmosphere they made
The Witcher 1 felt more like Fallout 1
The Witcher 2 was Icewind Dale
(atmosphere-wise)
I guess it's because the first was 100% canon
and the 2nd was just the developers' vision over the universe
they're still the best RPGs of the moment tho
and CD Projekt is the most customer friendly company out there
they managed to get this "good guy" aura about them
so the more different they are from the large corporations
the more money they make
because people in general view them as the 2nd coming
dropping some TW music
you don't hear these tones in TW2, which is great
because they wouldn't fit
you need this kind of stuff for a track like that
not this kind of stuff

1:38 AM
lol it's so easy to get rep on SO :\
spent 1 min there, posted an answer, got extra rep
too bad that site means nothing to me

5 hours later…
6:11 AM
@AlexM. hi..good morning

6:51 AM
Is anybody still awake?
For those who are still awake in the middle of the night

Does anyone know if Monogame works with VS Express?

Windows is listed as a supported platform, so, it should work.
but I haven't tried it myself. rbwhitaker.wikidot.com/setting-up-monogame -- this also talks about setup with VS Express

user92578
But do I need a payed version of Visual Studio?

user92578
Oh cool, no I don't

According to that link, you shouldn't.
:)

1 hour later…
2:11 PM
I don't think I understand how Litecoin mining works. :P
I installed Litecoin, installed a "qtMiner". Ran it for 8 hours at 50 kH/s.
Yet my balance hasn't changed. Still at 0.00 ltc.

cryptocurrency
meh
can't beat $$$

I realize that 50 kH/s isn't much, but I figured it should be at least something considering my balance is showing up as 0.00 µltc :P
Well, I figure if there's even a remote chance it goes the same way btc did, I might as well see if I can make a few.
I read about btc when it was first released and figured it wasn't going to work. Now I regret it considering how much just one btc is worth today. :P

2:26 PM
it's not much at all
I'm doing dogecoin, but as part of a pool
I do this mainly out of curiosity; not to get any real value

I dropped the gamejam invitation here

 The Ink Spot

GDSE's banter bin. Where we complain about clients, post cute ...
wonder if people will actually see it and be interestedi n it

here's a story of a guy trying to cash in his bitcoins
it's REALLY hard to get actual money for them

buttcoin
lol

:D
If you're solo mining as you are, what you're doing is trying to find a hash that works. If you find one, you've found a block, and that's when your balance goes up
the likelyhood of you finding a block on your own is low, unless you're in a currency whose mining has only just started.

I dunno man, I just dunno
to me it looks like a lame way to make money
like pay per click

2:30 PM
it's not a way to make money, except for early adopters of a currency that gets big enough for some suckers to buy in for cash instead of mining.
by now, at least with Bitcoin, there are so many large pools with dedicated hardware, the cost of mining new ones is ridiculous

but why do you mine them if not for money

I'm just messing around; I'm odd that way
but as a deflationary currency, it's doomed never to be used as a real currency, as deflationary currencies encourage saving, not spending
this is why central banks today target 2% inflation. It means people would rather invest their cash than hoard it
this is my understanding of all this, anyway
@William'MindWorX'Mariager i guess william isn't here anymore. here's a ping so you get the link: buttcoin.org/easy

Sorry, was in the shower.

no reason to be sorry :)

2:46 PM
Interesting read
So the exchange rates listed are just made up basically?

they're based on buy/sell orders on the market
but those buy/sell orders are based quite a lot on internal trading and not connected with the real value
it's also hard to say, since the trades are anonymous, if there is a single large account holder making trades with itself to mess with the price
one guy traced a bunch of trades through the blockchains, and found a large account spread out a bunch of BTC to a shitload of accounts, then they all found their way back to another single account.
mess with these things if you want, but beware that they are probably manipulated by the people who start them. The guys who started Bitcoin were able to mine shitloads easy when it started since they were the only ones doing it

Hmm
What made you choose to give dogecoins a go?

I've been following the BTC debate for a long time. I decided I could get a better perspective by being involved directly with a cryptocurrency
interestingly, dogecoin has more transactions than bitcoin now because people actually use it to tip each other on reddit, and for other small things.
it's functioning as a currency better, as it's being traded
but as its value climbs, the deflationary aspect may hit, and then people will start hoarding them
hard to say

3:06 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager All exchange rates are made up, because all currency is made up. The exact point of currency is that you place arbitrary value on it in good faith that others will play along too.

I was just on the phone. I remembered I had a friend who did large scale mining. He said that selling bitcoin was never an issue. Now he's moved on to litecoin and he's using litecoin to upgrade and keep his miners working.
@MickLH Yeah, that was a silly statement by me. :P I know currency is made up.

I'm a complete idiot with that stuff man :P
A friend and I jumped on bitcoin as soon as it came out, back when our gaming GPUs could mine full bitcoins in a few days a pop
We ended up setting up a cluster in a family members garage, with the agreement that we would pay for electricity
But he got ansy and paranoid, when we were just starting to make real money, he asks us to get it all out of there and accuses us of stealing his power and not making an effort to make money :/
So we spent a few (then-nearly-worthless) bitcoins ordering small things like snacks and toys, just to troll him and closed down the operation.
I think we got like $20 out of the whole endeavor, although if we saved them until now it would be more like $20,000
If we kept mining... lol oh well

user92578
4:06 PM
Quite close to VS look, don't you think?

user92578

I think someone borked my Track & Trace. :P
The order was placed, apparently, 12 years ago. :P

4:27 PM
after almost two months of waiting
we finally get snow
also

4:55 PM
lol

5:10 PM
you mean LoL

Nope
How long has LoL been around?

4 years I think
BUT IT HAS SUPERCEDED THE OLD "lol"

god my bullshit neighbor took her fucking noisy dog out again

I want to take that mutt
and slice it open

5:19 PM
hands Alex a knife
Then do it.

oh god
YES

My neighbors dog would never shut up
Barking in the middle of the night, running in the street, you name it
Then it got hit by a car
and we secretly threw a party
Rival of the Oculus with built in Audio!

@hasherr lol
at first I thought
that was a kickstarter to gather funds for your party

Bahha
Nah, just something I found on reddit that I thought was relevant.

5:34 PM
the R&D entered closed beta

woa

seeing other planets' surface sure is exciting for me
I wish I'll be able to go to another planet before I die

user4704
You could volunteer for that Mars thing.

I was thinking about going with something that's sufficiently tested out

user4704
No risk no reward!

5:51 PM
lol nah
I'm the guy who's willing to turn into an android in order to not die of natural causes
doing something silly that could cause my death earlier is...
silly

6:07 PM
I want to live forever so that I can watch history.

events become obsolete as soon as they happen
you already watched a lot of history

Yep.
9/11 is probably the biggest thing that's happened in my life, even though I don't remember it.

6:34 PM
soundtrack drop

Divine Divinity!
Lovely game

silly name but lovely game yes
I believe you are aware of divinity: original sin yes?

Divine Divinity 2 was nice too.
Divinity: Original Sin?
Don't think I've heard of it.

it's coming out soon

Whoa
Looks awesome!
And turn-based combat <3

6:44 PM
yup
I have no idea how to search for this but I want some sort of air freshener or perfume that smells like the vanilla pudding powder from dr oetker lol
Dr. Oetker is a German company that produces baking powder, cake mixes, yogurts, frozen pizza, pudding, cake decoration and much more. Also included in the portfolio are a maritime freight business (Hamburg Sud), a bank, a publishing company, an insurance outfit, breweries and a number of high-class hotels all over Europe. History Formation The company was founded by Doctor August Oetker in 1891; the first product developed was "Backin", a pre-measured amount of baking powder that, when mixed with 500g of flour and other ingredients, produced a cake. First World War Dr. Oetker's so...
it's not just vanilla
say, it smells differently from the vanilla essence
or my vanilla flavored tea
this is not the best track in divine divinity but I think it's the best to describe the overall atmosphere
the game felt gloomy and depressing somewhat
this is imo the best track
'Please note that the Intel XDK Simulator does not emulate any Cordova JavaScript API commands. For the time being, please refer to the Ripple Emulator for more information on emulating Cordova-based hybrid apps."
well, this sucks

7:44 PM
Has anyone ever tried setting their IDE's font to something that looks handwritten?
^ If anyone can survive a week of programming in this font they deserve a prize.

it looks awful

still, while I know you agree with me
you made my eyes hurt
and now I must punish you
enjoy

Really? Comic sans?

they say
"Comic Sans makes the whole world blind."
or something like that
now imagine you worked with someone and they came to you saying "there's a problem with my code"
and the code looks like the one above
printed
on a piece of A4 paper

7:51 PM
If only it would, then you would have to see it :P jk

8:24 PM
today I decided to switch the eternal chocolate as dessert
and make my own vanilla pudding with sour cherry jam topping

Jon
lol, any gui that isn't monospace is silly

Hey everybody.

ugh, now that I look at XDK again
the way the code is highlighted
it looks a lot like my comic sans code above
it's a fucking rainbow

Jon
so ugly.

Irish flag

Jon

I can't find the options menu to switch to monokai or something on the XDK

Typically, I like my code editor with a dark background I and I use primarily 4 or 5 colors
Blue, green, purple, turquoise and a darker shade of green are the easiest on my eyes.

Currently you can not change the colors of the editor in the XDK. That is something we can look into adding in a future release.

I experimented with colors when creating my scheme

Jon
when i see people code on white backgrounds, i'm like "pfft, noob"

8:32 PM
@Jon ikr
everything black just yells "pro"
at my workplace only two people use Unity
me, and a team member

Jon
actually, its also easier on the eyes, when you read code all day long every single day.

and I'm the only one with Pro

Jon
If you are reading on white background, you will notice eyestrain eventually

and I'm always like "lol noob your unity is grey"

This is my current scheme

Jon
8:33 PM
I'm a darkside pusher myself.

@Jon tbh, I always coded fine on white
I always coded fine on black too

Easy on the eyes.

I just picked black because it looks great

Jon
I went to the darkside, and now I hate white.

black text in code is just disgusting

8:34 PM
I use a dark background for C++ and a white background for Java...mainly because I can't quite figure out how to change colors in Eclipse.

I discovered meetup.com
and found this:
The Cluj Napoca Agile Software Meetup Group
Cluj Mobile Developers
UX/UI Cluj
Game Lab Cluj
Cluj.py
I should join one
the agile meetup seems to be well established at 300+ members
but it also looks hardcore and I think it's invitation based or something

What're you guys working on right now?

Nothing, but thanks for the reminder to get back to work

lol

8:51 PM
The prodigal son has returned.

"Present an algorithm for the evaluation of a JOIN operator that does not require a Cartesian product."
what.
WELL I GUESS A MAXIMUM GRADE OF 9/10 IS FINE TOO

@AlexM. Not good enough.

nah, it's good, the rest of the exam is easy
I only want to pass anyway

'It's just college.'

@AlexM. Replication will win

9:00 PM
@hasherr My color scheme:

What is that... Monokai?

nice

@Grey I call it "Aidan's color scheme"

"Hasherr's Color Scheme" is still my favorite.

Looks very close to monokai.
I like Obsidian.

9:03 PM
I invented it myself, I experimented with colors that stand out, are easy on the eyes, and that look nice (easier to work with).

k

What font do you use (I use Consolas)?

:>

The easiest colors for my eyes are light/medium green, turquoise/sky blue, and purple
White can be in there as wel.
That and a dark background, and my eyes can just glide over stuff

Courier or Consolas. Consolas more than often.

9:05 PM
i think I'm on New courier

*Courier New

Yeah, that thing

I used to use courier, but I found Consolas to be better.
It just looks smoother to me.

9:38 PM
I was looking at a book on objective-c the other day. And I must say, it actually makes a lot of sense.
Of course I am not currently making iOS apps so I don't have a need to learn it :(

pudding is done
didn't have a whisk
inb4 lumps

@AidanMueller OSX Apps

@Grey don't have a mac
Besides, you can make osx apps in c++

Yes, and you can make iOS apps in C++ as well.

@Grey But I think you need to make parts of it in Objective-C
To my understanding

9:48 PM
No.

Does anyone know if the arcsynthesis tutorials are still being created? I looked at the bitbucket page and there is recent activity, but it looks like it's just maintanance.

@AlexM. Haha, ha? Uhhh, Still confused.

it was not a scam

I think I get it.
That was my guess
I've looked at Fortran code, and I must say, Assembly looks easier.

9:54 PM
Wow. All this time I thought Hugo Elias's Paper on "Perlin Noise" was what it said it was, but adding up multiple octaves is not Perlin Noise - but Fractal Noise.
or Pink Noise.
It's funny it hasn't been corrected.

lol I can see R&D.SE becoming big

@AlexM. I don't want it to turn into the next yahoo answers
