@Dan . . .
So.... NetworkManager now uses this resolvconf program
if /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink to what resolvconf expects it to be you don't get DNS entries
NetworkManager is silent about this

Q: How are machines with globally routable addresses routed to behind other machines?

Robbie MckennieSay i have a machine that has the public ip 1.1.1.2, and it is connected to the internet via another machine, 1.1.1.1 . How do routers out on the internet know how to get packets to 1.1.1.2? I imagine on some level it's hierarchical, but looking at a traceroute i can't see any kind of universal h...

Fuck Linux.

@voretaq7 I require dinner and wine first. I doubt those free wheeling hippies will pay out.
@TheCleaner Do we have a better IPv4 routing question than the one I just linked him to?
@ScottPack I didn't say I was going to do it (I don't want whatever diseases they have!)
Actually I tried to edit my chat post...my real question was in regards to...do we have a meta question that covers things like "how does x work?"/learning questions. Meaning is it cool to ask such questions? Could I ask "I'm confused as to how the FTP protocol works? Can someone explain it?"
16:09
@TheCleaner Depends very much on the question
"FUCKING SUBNETS - HOW DO THEY WORK?!" is a pretty common question from junior admins -- it makes sense for us to have the canonical subnetting question
"Herp Derp how does HTTP work someone walk me through the protocol!" is a question that is best answered by a link to rfc-editor.org and a smack
Specifically about routing, I think we should have a canonical question about routing similar to the one about subnetting (if we don't already)
Gotcha...so it (like most things in life) is a grey (or if you prefer...gray) area.
<-- Googling canonical
Perhaps a routing one will show up on the NE beta site that we can link to...I'm not a BGP expert. Technically you'd need a "How does internal routing work?" and "How does external/internet routing work?"...at least for readability.
yup.
If you can find a better routing question (or want to write a good answer about Routing for him) I think it's worth adding to the list of canonical questions
@TheCleaner true - but a high level overview of routing (without getting as deep as we did for subnetting) would be useful
Maybe I'll write something up if I get some downtime today
I can piece together various sources, condense it down, add my own spin, etc. if I have some time later tonight...I'll put it on my to-do list.
16:15
The root of the issue is he doesn't understand IP addressing
I'll give you an example. Many years ago I was curious about IP addresses so I wanted to know what different folks had for an IP address. i was trying to determine the pattern. The problem was....there wasn't a pattern per se I could recognize
@Travis - that's cause...CIDR.
Yep
@Travis Sure there's a pattern
it just depends on who you look at
Aye. All the warez are on IP 127.0.0.1. ;-)
Always. ;-)
@Hennes (1) SMACK Don't publish private addresses in the public DNS you fools!
@Hennes (2) SMACK Stay off my workstation!
:-)
16:18
I don't think that's the issue. I think he knows about subnets and default gateways, but the Internet isn't just one giant hierarchy with default gateways. He's really asking about RIP, OSPF, ISIS, and BGP
@Hennes I prefer Localhost
they're MY warez and YOU NO CAN HAS!
::1 is less typing
@Travis ::1?
Or, as I only recently realised 127.1
16:19
You end up with a company with 2 switches and 30 users with a /8 subnet internally connected to a cable modem and 1 external IP...just because. No harm no foul I guess...could be worse if they chose 192.168.1.x/24 only to find that their VPN clients were going to be screwed until they created a separate subnet for them.
@ChrisS Posted a youtube video link for him on BGP also
@ChrisS Also, if he understands it why would he pose the question this way, "Say i have a machine that has the public ip 1.1.1.2, and it is connected to the internet via another machine, 1.1.1.1"
@Hennes I'm.... not sure that's legal
@ChrisS Wouldn't he be NAT'ing?
are you allowed to omit zero octets in IPv4?
@ChrisS So his public is really 1.1.1.1
@voretaq7 Going back 13 years...I think so
16:21
I never realised that was allowed for IP v4, just for IP v6, but...

@Travis I want to murder the narrator of that video who is apparently in love with the sound of his own voice talking about think nobody ever cares about.
Test on win7
@voretaq7 ZOMG?! How do people not know about this??
@ChrisS Prrrobably because even the RFCs say it's rare and doesn't work in a whole bunch of places
Uhm. I did not know. Nether did half the group around me when I found out
16:22
@Hennes Invalid test
@ChrisS lol
Same result on FreeBSD 7.4
I never use it, as it doesn't work all over the place....
(which I would say about any operating system -- I only believe the RFC)
@Hennes -it's allowed for any IPv4 (pinging in that weird octet way)...it just differs based on what you put in...for instance...

@Hennes Also an invalid test (see above) :)
Hmm, same on Ubuntu.
@ChrisS It's apparently forbidden in URIs

I do not think people actually use it.
More or less just as nobody seems to use a single large decimal address
001 is not treated as octal ?
@Hennes dude if you roll in animal shit people will just let you do whatever you want because you smell bad :-P
16:25
oops
I do occasionally use straight integer notation for IP addresses

'Fun' things happen with application which do not expect it. E.g. older IE assuming you are on a safe local network.
Let me Google that for you....

@ChrisS indeed!

A: How can i verify the trust between 2 domains in Windows Server 2008R2 Active Directory?

TravisUsing the Windows interface Open Active Directory Domains and Trusts. In the console tree, right-click the domain that contains the trust that you want to validate, and then click Properties. On the Trusts tab, under either Domains trusted by this domain (outgoing trusts) or Domains that trust...

@Hennes Yeah, quite a few apps think it's a DNS hostname, but the OS then interprets it as an IP...
I guess its logic used to be:
If ( externel ) then unsafe
else belongs to safe sites
@ChrisS There some math involved in it converting it?
@Travis Active Directory -- TRUST NO ONE.
16:27
Not just AD
@Travis Of course =]
I really need to get into a paranoid mode
@Hennes You didn't see them outside did you?
@Travis If it's really THEM you won't see them.
Hmm, youtube is broken again.
16:29
@Hennes s/again/still/
Every single 'movie' is "an error occured. Please try again later.

I think we need a "like" button on SF. I like some of the posts because they make logical sense but I don't know if they're true so I don't want to upvote
3338456592 works in IE and Chrome (though SE uses host headers, so not much fun). Doesn't work on FF on Win8.

hai guyz

@MDMarra hey you
@TheCleaner Yuck, you use the homedir attribute in AD
@ScottPack hi pal
@MDMarra Is that what Windows sysadmins say instead of 'yo momma' jokes?
16:56
yeah, that and "your admins use logon scripts to map drives"
both equally offensive
@MikeyB yo momma is so fat, her domain can't be controlled.

Today's task: Keep the kitten awake all day so that she's not keeping me up all night.
Also keep kitten from waking up GeriatriCat so he doesn't piss on the bed out of irritation.
@Adrian Solution: wake him up by quickly putting him into a plastic bag
@MikeyB Nah, that's mean. But she'll definitely get woken up if she bites the laptop power cord too hard one more time.
@MDMarra How have things been?
17:01
Dang. We're 3 votes away from hitting the total votes in the previous 2 elections.
@ScottPack Good. My current project is still on hold
so I've just been working from home for the last week
@MDMarra Yay!
heyas
reading SCSM blogs, making my demo environment work right. Trying to figure out how to herd SharePoint in the right direction.
You know, the usual.
Sharepoint? * Shudder *
17:04
I only need to know it as it relates to the self service portal component of SCSM
that said, we have a pretty cool SP 2013 setup at work for internal use
I, however, have nothing at all to do with that
Sharepoint! The breakfast of champions
@Hennes shudder
I was trying to avoid the italics
why?
17:12
Because I want to add asterixes around it.
@Hennes im on a short break from sharepoint, working on our apache and mysql servers
my headache is going away lol
@MattBear it helps when you're not facedesking every 5 seconds with sharepoint. :-)
oh hai @DennisKaarsemaker
Hm, that's interesting...I was looking at the alternate IP notation. Interesting how it works :p
@Olipro hello
17:20
# ping 0.0
PING 0.0 (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
I was Googling for Windows netcat the other day, came across a website, and guess whose Gordon Ramsay looking Dutch face I saw
@NathanC yes lol, when everything works like its supposed to, and your worst issue is you forgot to sudo
@Olipro can't be mine, I don't do windows.
you lie, boy!
17:22
@MattBear I live in the face of danger and sit at a root prompt. ... ... just kidding.
@NathanC 0.o you like to live dangerously!
chicks dig that
@Olipro hmm, I vaguely remember this. Though I have absolutely no clue why I needed it.
chicks dig the root prompt
Matt Bear impresses bitches with his subnet zero
@DennisKaarsemaker ha, well, the internet is a surprisingly small place after all
17:24
<-- playing with ClamAV
So glad to be moving off this server this weekend ...that moment when it takes ~10 seconds to rm a file
@NathanC Next thing we know, you're going to have nameserver 134744072 in your /etc/resolv.conf...
@freiheit Do you even answer questionnaires on meta, bro?
Woo! Election Trash Talking!
2
17:30
@ScottPack Oh, probably eventually, yeah
Hayhay
@Adrian I'd pay to see the candidates do a big mud wrestling game
@Adrian Not really. @freiheit's the only valid candidate who hasn't answered yet. That post was tough and took a long time, yo.
@DennisKaarsemaker That's okay. I'd probably pay in order to not see it.
@freiheit oh...uh...let me remove that. :>
17:31
@ScottPack Now you went and took all the fun out of it. =(
@Adrian like a true moderator! We should all vote @ScottPack!
@ScottPack I'm a valid candidate? See, that's why I'm being slow answering. I want to minimize the chances of accidentally actually getting elected!
@freiheit Brilliant! Minimize your chances of being elected while still receiving the complimentary undershirt. I like your style.
@freiheit Well, thank you at least for your efforts in trying to get the count up high enough that EC wouldn't make it past Primaries.
@ScottPack undershirt? I work for education in California. out here on the left coast, that's just a shirt. :)
17:34
@freiheit undershirts are for ghetto people and underwear models
@JoelESalas you do know that @freiheit is an underwear model, don't you?
Apparently people are bitching that I didn't do three month straight of first on call, just one month.
@freiheit I'm just not keen on wearing the StackExchange branding out and about. Were it site specific I would totally wear it as just a shirt. Those things are really comfy, though, and keep their color pretty well.
@Cole YOU BASTARD
2
@DennisKaarsemaker If you keep up that kind of commentary, I'll post pictures of me in Spandex. your eyeballs may never recover
17:35
I'm like, seriously?
Coworker said that the other guys in the group have been whining about it.
@freiheit pics or it didn't happen!
@ScottPack I have an SF-specific shirt.
@freiheit Don't you own a bike? Doesn't that mean you wear bike shorts?
@freiheit half the room wears spandex all the time on their bike. Only @WesleyDavid doesn't have one.
17:36
I even wear spandex underwear when on my motorbikes!
@freiheit I wasn't all that active when the care packages went out, I think I was on the 4th page at that time. I do have a Sec.SE shirt. Pretty cool design on that one.
@DennisKaarsemaker if you can get a cat to wear spandex I'll give you... um.... some bandages
@DennisKaarsemaker Not the bike, he does wear spandex.
@Adrian Yeah, but on bicycles we don't put anything on over the spandex underwear.
This fucking place
17:37
also
I bet my husband he couldn't swaddle a cat. http://t.co/ldQlkjUZiY
@freiheit Which is, in fact, mildly revolting.
@voretaq7 I enjoyed that.
@ScottPack INORITE?
@Adrian Especially when it's somebody that's 30-50 pounds overweight, like me...
@MDMarra huh?
@ScottPack Meanwhile - in the cat's mind....
@TheCleaner your command prompt was at Z:\. Usually that means your a network share is set in the homedir attribute in AD
or you always start the command prompt and type z:
Ok, you fucking perverts, there's a picture of me in my most unflattering bicycling outfit ^^^.
3
@freiheit foxy
17:43
I've seen less flattering.
@freiheit the outfit is fine. It's the moustache that's disturbing.
2
@DennisKaarsemaker It needs wax.
@MDMarra Ah...yes...and no (in the near future). Currently homedir is set as Z...but Z will go away in two weeks to be replaced by SkyDrive Pro with Office 365 E3.
@DennisKaarsemaker The mustache's power helped me to complete that 300 mile bike ride. After the ride was over, I removed the mustache.
Looks like a 1960's playboy magazine cover
standing on her head
17:46
@freiheit ok, I approve of that use of a moustache :)
Ubuntu question... what's the clean way to change IPs?
Never a good night to be the the cream in the sandwich... t17.co/lrpics-2010/…
manual through /etc/ interfaces
@ewwhite Installing CentOS is the cleanest way to change IPs on Ubuntu.
17:48
@freiheit for some reason, I did not picture you that way. Not that I picture men in spandex...often.
@ewwhite Serious question. How janky is it to manage users for a largish team in Puppet vs a proper directory like LDAP
@JoelESalas Janky.
Ok thank you
LDAP gives you instant updates
It sure does.
17:49
Puppet (or any other "push the password file" system) introduces delay - delay can be bad if you fired someone :)
@JoelESalas janky, but may make sense if there are disjoint networks, etc.
@ewwhite All nets are linked, most users need access to most things.
@ewwhite I've solved disjoint/pendant networks with LDAP slaves (or LDAP caches)
@Cole That's an unusual outfit for me, and I don't usually have the outrageous mustache...
@JoelESalas depending on the thing you use for LDAP you can do access control with it too :)
17:50
@voretaq7 I know these things. My overlords do not
@JoelESalas Would you like to borrow an LDAP-enabled ClueBat?
@freiheit well apparently I look Hispanic so - pictures can be deceiving!
@voretaq7 Will I get a TLS error?
lol
@Cole Hispanic? I thought you were some kind of outer-space potato man
17:51
@JoelESalas Not if you buy REAL CERTIFICATES you cheap fucker!
:P
@JoelESalas potato man?
@Cole Futurama reference
Also my sister went to text me "douche bag" and it auto corrected to "douche potato"
4
I was dying.
17:52
@Cole Your profile pic looks more Italian to me...
@freiheit I get that a lot. I'm Irish and French Canadian - more Irish though.
@voretaq7 Dude, free certificates available - absolutely no excuse for years now
@ChrisS Setting up an internal CA has been available FOR-FUCKING-EVER, there's never been an excuse :P
My hair usually isn't that douchey. I had just gone to the barber.
17:54
@Cole douchenozzle!
@Cole Que paso, vato?
@freiheit I know, totally bro-dude
@freiheit @cole is not fat!
@voretaq7 Well, I mean without rolling your own...
Picked my girlfriend up after and she was like "oh....what up BRO?"
17:56
@MDMarra Have you seen this document: download.microsoft.com/download/9/5/E/…
I really need to stay out of SU... HP Compaq 610 Battery not charging ...accepted answer was from the guy that posted... So, apparently it was the battery....
So I just emailed the company back who wants me in for an interview for the VMware/MS Engineer consultant position. I'm sort of interested - but I know my tattoos/lobes will most likely be a reason to not get the job. I basically told them up front to see what they say
@DennisKaarsemaker You know a company has good culture when a variant on that one is defined in the company's internal acronym & jargon dictionary
@Travis you think?!
