@MattBear why would you castrate their tongues?
eats, shoots and leaves
@voretaq7 You don't want their tongues reproducing!
Think how horrifying it is to have millions of tiny baby lawyer tongues oozing around!
@freiheit ...wait, you people reproduce with your tongues?
so.... like all that BS about kissing getting you pregnant is true?
@voretaq7 I'm having too much trouble picking which horribly inappropriate joke about lawyers and/or lesbians to go with, so I'm going to return to working on my questionnaire answers instead.

@MattBear Are your files changing size while clamav reads them? Perhaps you need to enable massive amounts of debugging output to find out which file it ran into that with...

@freiheit thats what I though initially... but I think It might actually be a permissions issue

Q: Windows 2003 Server

DIgouI'm working with a Windows Small Business Server 2003. I have very little server experience here and this one has some pretty specific issues with it I'm unsure how to address. The only source of information I have is exchanging emails with the owners kid who worked with it two or three years ago...

I'm rather afraid that he's the guy the "got hired" to do it because he is the only "computer guy" on staff.
Typical small family-owned business cluster-fuck.
@TheCleaner And your complaint about this question is...?
21:28
@TheCleaner Yep. Question needs some help. Ain't OT and he isn't familiar with what we require to help him fix it.
Decision Time: Be Helpful and put some time into it? Or be an Asshole and shout at him?
"If I restart this thing, is everything going to go under? If not, how often should I restart it. I feel like I'm walking in a minefield whenever I touch this thing aha. " - that to me says "Not Constructive"...as it is just an opinion if I post an answer to that question. You could say "Everything is an opinion!" but I don't think you'll get very far on offering much help there.
sounds like a "I didn't ask for this, don't know wtf I'm doing, please help"
@MattBear Poor sap's probably a graphic designer who got this thrown at him because he's the only person there that uses a computer with any more depth than rote repetition.
@Adrian most likely
My guess...low level tech that thought he could farm out his services and get paid decent money on the side, only to find out he's in over his head.
21:33
@MattBear I did 8 months at a gig like that. Sucked purely.
@TheCleaner The question can't be fixed. At best you might be able to give him best practices guidelines for AFTER the machine is straightened out.
To get it straightened out the best advice is "Hire a pro"
@voretaq7 A suggestion of talking to the vendor and seeing if they have a Professional Services department to assist him would probably be more helpful.
And then drop the best practices on him.
@Adrian older women aren't interested in me.
"Call the vendor, they still seem to be in business."
@MichaelHampton With a little more diplomacy, Yes.
21:38
Diplomacy? Oh crap, I forgot that at home today.
@MichaelHampton Down that road lies HopelessN00b. =)
@MichaelHampton but you work from nome dont you ?
Nome (Siqnazuaq in Iñupiaq) is a city in the Nome Census Area in the Unorganized Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska, located on the southern Seward Peninsula coast on Norton Sound of the Bering Sea. According to the 2010 Census, the city population was 3,598. Nome was incorporated on April 9, 1901, and was once the most populous city in Alaska. Nome lies within the region of the Bering Straits Native Corporation. The city of Nome claims to be home to the world's largest gold pan, although this claim has been disputed by the Canadian city of Quesnel, British Columbia. In the winter of 1...
@Adrian Now it places the wiki post on the question..
Burma Shave?!

@Cole Nonsense. Ride the LIRR drunk train. There will be plenty of cougars hitting on you.

Q: How to listen ctrl+s system call in linux?

user174889I have one excel file and I want to listen any changes made in it. When ever any changes take place and user place ctrl+s button, changes should be recorded to some log file with timestamp. I tried out with ltrace , strace command did not succeed! Any idea? I saw inotifywait but did not gret

Oy, my head.
Not even waiting for consensus - BANG.
@MichaelHampton I think that's the most incomprehensible question excreted onto the site today.
So, I heard I was a bot?
21:50
@MichaelHampton how does it make you feel that you was a bot?
Ok. Does anyone else have a UCS blade chassis?
@MichaelHampton Doesn't smell like a bot
@voretaq7 What makes you believe how does it make I feel that I was a bot?
2
Huh. What's this predictor thing? Where does it live?
21:55
@MichaelHampton I want to believe that you believe how it makes you feel that you was a bot.
@voretaq7 Why do you say that?
@MichaelHampton OMG, I think I know the answer, though... ;)
@MichaelHampton The voices in my head tell me to say that.
(Schizophrenic Eliza bot -- I could TOTALLY pass a turing test with one of those!)

Q: proxy to third party site and masquerade url

580farmTo improve search engine optimization I need to have www.company.com/support proxy to our third party support site company.custhelp.com, while at the same time making it so the user only sees the former url (www.company.com/support) in their browser. Since this is a support site certain aspects o...

I really hate when people do that.
21:57
@voretaq7 thanks. What is this going to become one day?
@MichaelHampton what I hate even more is custhelp's interface
OK, off to the co-op's annual meeting. or bleating. or "God you people bitch more than my fucking users!"
@TheCleaner Oh come on, that title needs to go, too.
22:10
Sock puppetry... I'm doing it wrong!
@Ward Wow. Where does this come from?
@MichaelHampton How to lose almost 10k in 1 day!
He's going to become famous for it.
have a good night folks, I am out.
22:25
@MarkHenderson wait, how did 10k get lost there?
@MattBear He had dozens of sockpuppet accounts and they all got nuked at once
@MarkHenderson whats a sockpuppet account?
@MattBear ....
Something that @pauska masturbates into (poor @PauskaSock)
@MattBear Since the dawn of the publicly-accessible Internet, humanity has faced a raging battle against the sock-puppet army.
A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception. The term—a reference to the manipulation of a simple hand puppet made from a sock—originally referred to a false identity assumed by a member of an internet community who spoke to, or about, himself while pretending to be another person. The term now includes other uses of misleading online identities, such as those created to praise, defend or support a third party or organization, or to circumvent a suspension or ban from a website. A significant difference between the use of a pseudonym and the creation of a sockpuppet...

Today, I came home to find a sock I previously used to whack off on my bed with googly eyes and a mouth drawn on it with a note that read "Because you can't find a real girl, I made your current one prettier, Love Mom." FML
@tylerl i more mean, how was it determined that the puppet accounts belonged to that user?
@MattBear Its not difficult. I suspect that he simply flew under the radar for a while
We have tools that cross-reference vote volumes against who they are sent to and received from
@MattBear It's pretty simple with some log correlation.
Every now and again you stumble over an account with 0 questions, 0 answers but has issued a hundred votes, all to the same 2 or 3 people
Or, once I found an account with 0 quetions, 0 answers, 0 votes, but 2000+ rep - all from edits
That was spooky
It was a ghost writer
ok, that makes sense
and the - rep is all the rep that was added from those accounts?
22:36
@MarkHenderson It is in theory possible to get all the way to 20K on edits alone. Approved tag wiki edits give you rep all the way up.
I don't know of anyone who's actually done this, though.
@MichaelHampton Are you sure about that? I thought you got capped on rep from edits after 2k.
@Zoredache Editing Q&As, yes.
ah, I see. So someone would have to spam the tag wikis. I think that would get noticed since they need to be reviewed.
@Zoredache We have enough reviewers now, that it might not be noticed for a while. And on SO, it would probably never be noticed.
@MichaelHampton I can think of easier ways of getting 20k
22:38
@MarkHenderson Yeah, me too.
hello
anyone here can help me with issue ?
or direct me to a proper room?
@IceD Please ask on the main site
question ?
ok :)
heh heh, auditor is asking what AV we use on our web servers
22:45
@MattBear "It's a new one, called Common Sense. We use it in combination with a really good firewall"
@MarkHenderson lol yuup
Actually if you allow file uploads you might want to scan them in quarantine, but ffs don't execute them
@MarkHenderson I have ClamAV to scan /var/www, thats about it
@MattBear Joke's on the auditor, then.
thought it was kinda funny
22:51
@ScottPack Happy now?
23:06
Ah, how I not-so-fondly remember thee, RedHat Driver Purgatory...
@Adrian Oh, which bit is it this time?
@MichaelHampton New box has brand-new Atheros ethernet (not wireless) and an Nvidia video card.
@Adrian And you're putting EL on that?
@MichaelHampton CentOS, but that had been the plan.
It's what I could afford.
@Adrian rpmfusion.org and install kmod-nvidia. That's half of it. The Ethernet, well, that ought to work already.
23:10
Yeah. I'm at the step back & take a deep breath phase. Going to dink with it more tomorrow afternoon. I have laundry * stuff to do.
which I'm avoiding.....
and there's a cat standing on my chest so I can't see the laptop too.
Ha. I'm rewiring my whole home network. Finally going to put that /48 to good use!
Yeah, we have Comcast here. Itching to get some hardware in place to support ipv6.
I"m just throwing OpenWrt nightly builds on all my various home routers.
> If I'm elected without somebody else pulling out, something has gone horribly wrong.
@MichaelHampton I'm halfway through that. I have a half-terminated patch panel dangling from the top of my store room cupboard. I got sick and tired of punching - I don't think I could ever be a data cabler
23:12
...of which there are currently three.
Got a phone call from a recruiter for a position at Google while I was dinking around with the CentOS box too. So there's that.
@MarkHenderson Ha, I've got three wireless routers so I don't have to recable the whole house.
so anyone have any good suggestions for a XSD tree viewer?
Am I just imagining it, or is it completely daft to expect rogue crawler bots to respect a robots.txt?
@Adrian It's completely daft.
23:16
@Adrian not sure if it's completely daft or only 99% daft...
@MichaelHampton Yeah. Thought so. Stupid provider has 1st level support out of India now and they keep sending me nasty messages about the sites hitting my Wordpress install and telling me that I need to update my robots.txt to tell those bots not to visit my site.
@Adrian I think I'm going to engage in some shameless self-promotion now... Go get Bad Behavior
@MichaelHampton What is this!
ahh sweet, cron jobs working right now
@JoelESalas That is how I kill spammers dead.
It's also the only thing I know of that's blocking that WordPress botnet.
23:21
@MichaelHampton Nice.
Most of what I wrote there got ported over in to the ModSecurity Core Rule Set a while back.
@MichaelHampton thanks! added to my list
Nice. Installed for 5 minutes and already caught one attempt.
@MichaelHampton That's lovely stuff, I see why you don't have any respect for shitty developers now
> The other wasn’t a botnet per se, but one person sending a large number of requests through open Mikrotik and other proxy servers – most of which happily also sent along his IP address, 178.137.18.127. This appears to be registered to a mobile phone in the Ukraine. Oops! Update: Looks like this guy has moved on to 46.118.122.151. He apparently still doesn’t realize that the open proxy servers are sending along his IP address.
@JoelESalas Oh, don't dig into it then, that code is not anywhere near my best code. And some of it sucks. But it works... And I'm most of the way through a ground-up rewrite anyway. I kept two little helper functions, maybe 15 lines of code, and junked the rest.
23:30
@MichaelHampton Reinventing the wheel. How developer-like of you
@JoelESalas Well, when the wheel is the wrong shape, seven-sided with lumps all over it, yes, you should reinvent it.
@MichaelHampton That's hardly a wheel
@JoelESalas It rolls!
Best practices changed over time, hell PHP itself changed over time, and it's functional but way out of date.
@MichaelHampton Honestly I can't blame you, if I was writing an all-new tool I wouldn't use PHP
23:35
I need some fucking UCS help and I have no idea where to start with this shit
@MattBear php.jpg "You're not pedaling hard enough!"
@JoelESalas I wouldn't use PHP either, except it's meant to be an add-on to PHP based web sites (like WordPress, MediaWiki and Drupal), so it kind of HAS to be in PHP.
@MichaelHampton I wish I could ;_;
Nothing like a nice simple blade chassis
@MichaelHampton Yeah, sometimes square wheels are the best choice.
"PHP was originally designed explicitly for non-programmers (and, reading between the lines, non-programs); it has not well escaped its roots. " < I love this line
@JoelESalas Yes, PHP is a steaming pile of crap, but when it was getting popular 5-10 years ago we didn't have better choices.
23:40
@MichaelHampton Now that I no longer have children living in the house with me, I may move my site back over to Drupal. Drupal's come a long way since I last deployed it in 2005.
@MichaelHampton In this day and age, Python is the best balance of boring and stable with enough cool new libraries and frameworks
@JoelESalas Are any of the major frameworks using Python?
@Adrian Django
I'm not developing any web sites. I only developed Bad Behavior because I was pissed off at all the spam I was getting on WordPress.
@Adrian Zope, was popular for a while
23:41
@JoelESalas Yeah, that one's made some progress. Last time I looked at a framework change was 3 years ago.
Zope is no good. It's too heavyweight to run on TomTom's phone!
@Zoredache Right. I'd forgotten about that one.
@Adrian ZenOSS is Zope-based.
@Zoredache Yep. I liked Zenoss, but I didn't like the dramatic increase in hardware budget I would need to run it.
Thanks. I'll keep that in mind as I'll be building out a monitoring schema soon too.
23:45
@MichaelHampton Yeah, that is the downside of Zope, it seems to require a box 10 times more expensive than a box that will run Nagios and similar checks.
What a rough day
And the Zenoss community seemed to be in decline. A lot of zenpacks just appeared to have been abandoned post-4.x.
I don't even have anything on the Star wall.
4
@JeffFerland That's how I got through my first year of grad school.
23:47
Hmm. Time to do a backup of my website.
@Adrian Automate that shit!
I just included a link to the robots.txt Wikipedia page in my response to the L1 tech support guy in India.
@ScottPack That's how everybody does 3 years of law school, I think.
FUCK! Seriously, having Facebook open all day at work is annoying.
2
@MichaelHampton I haven't had enough infrastructure at home to justify doing that. Once I'm working again I'm going to get a decent VPS account tho.
@ewwhite Can't resist the irony
23:52
I'm feelin' down.
Why does everything I touch go to shit?
@ewwhite Hey. That's my job. You can't have it!
Great, here comes more stupid flag abuse from the Bridge
@MichaelHampton Heh. And I love how the mods there complain about our attitude towards them.
@ewwhite Are you sure it wasn't already shit with a thin veneer of "somehow managing to work for now"?
@freiheit It was... and is.
But I uncover things... it delays me... I look incompetent.
23:55
@MichaelHampton Doesn't being a mod mean you have to deal with more of that?
@ewwhite Ha. You seem to be the only competent person there.
@Adrian Being a mod means I can actually do something about it.
@Ethan Contra-Indicated. The local native tribes further up the coast would hunt you, cook you, and eat you.
@MichaelHampton E.g. I was given a 4-host ESXi cluster installation... seems simple, right?
@ewwhite Right up your alley.
And the conventional wisdom is also to avoid jobs preferring ITILv3 certs like the plague, yes?
23:58
@Adrian Yes, because you'll spend 90% of your time doing pointless paperwork instead of anything productive.
@Adrian ITIL = stabbing in ear with sharpened phone books
@MichaelHampton So, are you trying to tell me that filing 12 change proposals in one day isn't productive?
@MichaelHampton That's what I figured. One of the local consulting companies is really on about ITIL3 for their System Engineers.
@MichaelHampton But switches were missing... another switch was repurposed... So I had to undo port configs. the Host cabling as wrong. The IPMI was in shared-mode (due to a new Supermicro firmware revision)... Then the spec changed... the VM I connect to in order to access privileged networks went down...
I got a toothache... My dog pissed on my shoes...
and now I'm blocking someone else on the project... and I look like the fool
@ewwhite "My vagina has sand in it"
@ewwhite You can't blame the toothache or the dog on anyone else, but the rest of that crap is.. Not Your Fault.
