Anyone know how to configure Asterisk outgoing line selection (serverfault.com/q/426721 <-- Has 4 lines and only 2 are being selected for outgoing calls)
Have done, but not with ISDN cards.
I'm really not familiar with Asterisk, but isn't is something simple like outgoing_line_group="dahdi0.0 dahdi0.1 dahdi1.0 dahdi1.1" ? I really need to sit down a mess with Asterisk one of these days.
@JourneymanGeek @Chloe PluralSight is awesome... if you can afford it for training stuff and what not
@Greg = Dude , Indeed i am ! But If in case u notice , u might crack this that Programmers is a fraternity and in case it does better that being racist !
@bhuvin um... say what?
13:12
@BrentPabst I just rolled a 30 on my linguistics check. I still failed the DC.
@BrentPabst - nothing man its bit diffi when educated ppl turn up on : "Indian Programmers ;)"
morning
@bhuvin After the last two days I have had working with them you don't even want to get me started
Well what happened dude ?? And besides that generalizations are correct ?
Would this question be more appropriate here instead of on SO?
13:15
Code Quality out of India is subpar, I think that about sums it up.

Q: Why doesn't the Bcc message header on an email work when using SmtpDeliveryMethod.SpecifiedPickupDirectory?

RachelWe have an email job that uses System.Net.Mail Emails get sent to a folder, and a job runs to copy the files to the Pickup folder on our Exchange server at a specified time of day. A copy of the email gets sent to an internal mailbox by using the Bcc field. There is a known issue where the Bcc ...

@Rachel No, thats a .NET construct I see there, sounds/looks like a programming question to me.
@Rachel eww, tough to say.
@Rachel If you told me it was a PowerShell script I would say yes, but being that its in VB.NET, no.
@BrentPabst There's that, and there's also a lot of people who outsource to India being largely morons who think it's a cheap magic bullet, and thus not doing basic things like providing a useful spec.
13:18
@Rachel Strictly speaking that's more Sysadmin scrip that a programming question I'd say
But it's a pretty poor Q
it's something in between.. either site would work, though I'd imagine he/she'd get more help with the actual syntax on SO
I know the syntax is correct and was working up until 8/27 this year
@pauska ditto.
I'm not actually sure what changed in the exchange configuration or server, but something made it stop working :)
@Rachel you sure the .NET framework version didn't get updated? ;)
13:19
I'll leave the question on SO though, thanks guys
@Rachel ask to get it migrated if nothing turns up
@BrentPabst - I agree dude ... upto some part ...
Actually yes, the v2.0 folder in %systemroot% did get an update on the same day
@HopelessN00b Agreed. We send fully documented specs and they get ignored. And to be clear its often not just India but all of Asia that has the same problem.
@BrentPabst Thanks, I'll start looking in that direction
13:20
@Rachel Maybe a security patch for .NET caused some issues
@Rachel Good luck!
@BrentPabst Hell, a lot of Europe and North America that have the same problem, if we're being completely honest about it.
@HopelessN00b Yep. At least with my NA colleagues I can reach out and smack them.
@BrentPabst %s/security patch for // There, I fixed that for you. :)
@BrentPabst Actually the only file thats changed is ngen_service.log. Do you know if this file logs changes to the framework?
@Rachel It's somewhat related... msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6t9t5wcf(v=vs.110).aspx is responsible for the log.
Not sure if it would cause your problem or not, worth checking out the log though
13:30
@BrentPabst Your question actually prompted me to check out the update list (not sure why I didn't think to do this first) and apparently a whole lot of updates got installed that day. I suspect one of them is the culprit.... but I don't know which one.
Thanks for the link though, I'll look into that too
no problem, I'd also check out the app and sys even tlogs when you run the program, it may be throwing errors in there as well.
alright, off to code this damn invoicing page
@Rachel Does the message.Headers.Add() function return a value, do you know?
I'd try returning it as a string and outputting it to a debug.txt file
@Chloe I don't think so. I think it's just a collection of key/values that should get read into the message header. I think the issue might have something to do with Exchange not reading and processing the headers correctly when the message is sent from the Pickup folder
@Rachel I see what you're saying
'morning, nerds.
13:37
Morning
I dislike mods editing user comments, since there's no revision history on them.
That was a trick question!
Someone edited a comment I made to a new user telling them that their question is OT.
I'd rather they just delete it and leave their own comment if they think mine wasn't cheery enough
Mods using comment edits to remove profanity or correct an obvious typo is fine with me, but something about completely rewriting a comment doesn't make much sense to me
Thoughts?
I fail to see why mods should be able to edit something at all.. either delete it and warn/report or leave it
You'd think a mod should know about dba.SE?
@MDMarra There is a revision history, you just can't see it =]
@pauska What about spelling mistakes, or other simple things?
13:42
@ChrisS I wasn't clear enough, I meant "edit comments"
@pauska I know. That's what I was referring to as well.
but again, the SU question I linked to
the question was from november 2011, and a user commented that it should fit better for dba.SE
yet a mod migrates it to us.. 20 hours ago...
@ChrisS I'll make a meta Q about it. I think it warrants a bit of discussion :)
@MDMarra Do you have a link to what got changed?
@MDMarra They shouldn't do that, agreed.
13:46
This is really off-topic for Server Fault (See our FAQ) -- it MIGHT fit on Stack Overflow, but it doesn't meet the requirements of a good question (Our standards and Stack Overflows are probably pretty similar) — MDMarra 17 hours ago
Originally I said something like "What part of our faq made you think that this question was appropriate for Server Fault?"
Basically the edit was a complete revision of the comment
I haven't deleted it, because I'm using it as an example in my meta question.
Another example of comments being the red-headed step-child of things on SE. Officially, no one gives much of a crap about them, hence, no one official gives much of a crap about them. :)
heh.. wow
anyone in RTP? I'm getting ready to need two mid-to-senior admins

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?
I'm trying to decide to go all-out and flame the shit out of him, or just ignore this all together
seems like the amount of mis-targeted migrations to us is increasing by the day
@HopelessN00b I suspect that's going to be the prime reason they'll never see a revision history or anything to that effect.
13:59
having "mods" like that on the other sites kind of makes the point....
@wfaulk RTP meaning... Real Time Transfer Protocol? Or something else?
@pauska He's a newish mod, they make mistakes
@tombull89 he's not even the mod who migrated it
yet I get more snark than a guy asking for code on SO
Speaking of mods, I think I'm going to hit 10K today.
@MichaelHampton Meaning one of the mods better ban you quickly, before that happens?
14:02
@pauska apologies, I thought he was.
@pauska Well, at least he admitted what we know to be true... mods on SO and SU just migrate anything here without bothering to look at it first, so there's your silver lining... confirmation!
@MDMarra Yeah, that's definitely not right. Its attributed to you, as if you said it.
Aug 31 at 17:02, by voretaq7
OK, on a serious note - you guys DO need to be nicer to the less clueful users. I know we all mock some of the "gems" that get posted on the site and make merciless fun of The Summer of Love, but we are supposed to be nice.
@ChrisS I really don't think that there was anything wrong with my comment as it originally stood
But, I can understand why a mod might want to replace it with a "nicer" one.
14:17
@MDMarra Tone/Attitude doesn't come across in text... I can certainly imagine you saying that with all the curiosity and good intentions in the world; but a noob is going to see that as a long-tooth telling him to buzz off 9 times out of 10.
@MDMarra Also, I wasn't quoting that in reference to your comment. Everyone seems to be in a "mood" today.
Maybe this is me being a crusty, jaded, bitter, cynical, cruel, sadistic, long-toothed BOFH, but what's wrong with that? N00b who can't be bothered to so much as read the FAQ before asking a question getting the idea to piss off?

Seems like a desirable result to me.
Hello, if I put points up for bounty, and no one is able to obtain the bounty, do I receive my points back?
@mbrownnyc No, I don't believe so
Oh, crap! And @ChrisS ban @MichaelHampton quick. He's only 3 points away from 10k. (That's gotta be a record, for Server Fault, 10K is 60 days?)
I ask because I would like to raise the bounty, if the question goes unfulfilled
14:21
@HopelessN00b 1. I don't set policy for Stack Exchange. 2. There are many more than a few professionals who have tales of seeing that and developing a very negative view of the Stack Exchange sites.
@mbrownnyc Indeed not. Your bounty doesn't refunded if you don't get an answer, or don't accept one.
"If you do not award your bounty within 7 days (plus the grace period), the highest voted answer created after the bounty started with at least 2 upvotes will be awarded half the bounty amount. If there's no answer meeting that criteria, the bounty is not awarded to anyone."
@Hopeles
wow this thing is not quite IRC
username tab completion people!
@mbrownnyc What do you mean?
Oh, haha
@mbrownnyc "If no answers meet these criteria, the bounty ends without it being awarded to any answer, and is not refunded to the bounty starter." from meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/16065/…
thanks Chris S
okay sounds good
14:24
@mbrownnyc Meh, think of it as a cost for advertising your question. It gets on a short list of featured questions for a week.
can I increase the bounty now?
2
Q: snmptt not translating traps, even with translate_log_trap_oid=1

mbrownnycI am having some trouble configuring snmptt to properly translate snmp traps. The following is a problem: /etc/snmp/snmptt.conf reflects: EVENT fgFmTrapIfChange .1.3.6.1.4.1.12356.101.6.0.1004 "Status Events" Critical FORMAT $* EXEC /usr/local/nagios/libexec/eventhandlers/submit_check_result $...

@mbrownnyc You can offer a second bounty, but you can't modify the first. The second has to be a minimum of double the previous bounty (to a max of 500)
when/how can I offer a second bounty?
@mbrownnyc: the same way you offered the first one
@ChrisS I hear that, but I'm having trouble finding anyone who's actually... "professional grade" (or anywhere near that level) being put off SE sites by someone being told to RTFF, honestly. (Not that you set SE policy and whatnot, as you stated, but I would be interested in reading of or about these professionals I can't seem to locate.)
@mbrownnyc I'd wait on offering a second bounty until your first one expires. If a 200 point bounty doesn't motivate someone to give you an answer, an additional 400 points won't either, so you're probably throwing your points away. I'd say anything over 100 is overkill anyway.
14:29
thanks Journeyma... I'll consider your opinion HopelessN00b Thanks
@HopelessN00b SF can have a "harsh" feel to it compared to other sites
@Chloe There's a line between harsh/terse and snarky/offensive... Server Fault tends to play hopscotch over it more commonly than other sites though.
@ChrisS Don't get me wrong, I'm just as bad as anyone else here for being snarky
But I can definitely see why people would avoid us
I can definitely say SF intimidates me the most. :P
Though we're definitely to other sites because we are meant to be professional only
14:33
@Chloe Sure, because it's explicitly a site for professionals, unlike other SE sites. FWIW, I didn't find it intimidating or harsh in the least, even at first. "It's for professionals, great, a minimum level of competence and effort to separate it from every other site on how to install a Server OS on the internet!"

Again, maybe that's just me being a crusty, jaded, bitter, cynical, cruel, sadistic, long-toothed BOFH, but I have trouble seeing any professional being scared off by "RTFF, dammit" comments in response to someone who's treating the place like Yahoo! answers.
So immediately there is a bar that has to be raised
thanks for the upvote to whomever did that
@mbrownnyc nobody gives a toss about Rep
@HopelessN00b I was more than a little put off when I first encountered TomTom. Almost didn't come back after that.
Downvote @MichaelHampton!
14:40
@ChrisS I think, for me, the issue with the "Professional" defence is that it works great for lack of research, lack of clarity and terrible question writing but I do cringe when people are struck down for simply not knowing something. At the end of the day professional covers everything from 1st tier support to IBM architects. We all had to learn something once, and we all end up out of our comfort zone.
3
Additionally, we all know intimately (or should!) how put on IT professionals are in the work place. It's often not our decision on what we have to support, and with what tools.
@ChrisS Well, I can see that, and had similar thoughts (and more) when I first encountered him, but every community has its... uh, "Tomtoms" for lack of a better way to put it, so I didn't take one member as a good representation of the whole 50,000 member community.
What is wrong with tomtom?
@Chopper3 well, at least I don't, which is why I want to give mine all away to someone who does :) (and hopefully that someone knows snmptt well)
@Chloe Absolutely. But there's a difference between "not knowing something" and "not bothering to even read the FAQ to figure out that your crappy questions about BluRay software for your Macbook is in waaaaaay the wrong place."
@ewwhite Honestly... at least from my interactions with him, he comes off as an abrasive asshat who speaks authoritatively on topics he doesn't actually know a damn thing about. From the couple of arrogant, completely off-base answers and comments he's thrown my way, at least. Don't know if it's indicative of him as a whole, or just a couple bad days, but that's how he's come off to me.
@HopelessN00b I guess I never deal with him.
14:46
Gah, too late. that damn @blueporcupineguy broke 10k. :(

Conrgats, @MichaleHampton ... you bastid. :p
Downvote!
Haters gonna hate.
@ewwhite Like I said, it's only been a couple interactions, so I dunno if he's really like that, or just had a couple bad days, but that's the impression I've gotten from my admittedly very small sample size.
10,012 reputation
visited 70 days, 66 consecutive

10k in 73 days. Not bad.
14:47
Not sustainable :)
@HopelessN00b @ewwhite Yep, that's mostly accurate.
I wonder if that's a record for SF, actually. He could be the Linux @EvanAnderson .
@HopelessN00b Maybe I can't do it forever, but I can sure do it longer than you.
4
@MichaelHampton That's...what she said?

Nasssty
14:52
Funny, the site doesn't look any different.
Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!
Looks like you already have. :(

And I thought my `7,677 rep in 106 days, 67 consecutive` was a good score for this ServerFault game too.
Now that's more like it!
@MichaelHampton They moved that to 20k recently, I think. Looks like you'll have to wait another couple of months. :p
because it would have annoyed people. but here's the gif. i.sstatic.net/SvVO2.gif
14:55
@HopelessN00b You mean serverfault.com/tools ?
@ChrisS Ah, yes! I hadn't noticed a link to it yet.
@ChrisS No, just trying to be glib and basically unhelpful to the porcupine.
Isn't he a hedgehog?
He told me I was the first to get his gravatar right when I called it a porcupine a while back.
Maybe he lied, but I don't think porcupines or hedgehogs are known for deception, so much as pointyness.
@HopelessN00b Porcupig...porcuswine... the little animal - with the quills!
15:00
I don't think it matters, as long as you don't touch the wrong way.
Hehehe. For some reason that makes me think of the Simpsons episode where Homer's pulling the pig's tail and giggling. "curly, straight... curly, straight... curly straight... teeheeeheee..."

Probably wouldn't work so well pulling on a porcupine's... pointy bits, though.
Oh... crap. And as further proof that I was a serial kitty murderer in my last life, the ticketing database that got corrupted last night... isn't backed up. And what the hell kind of maintenance plan description is `Full Backups of the user databases. TransLog backups for truncatation only.`anyway????

Ugh, I think it's time to demand a raise.
15:16
@MichaelHampton You can get hedgehogs as pets here... Their spines aren't particularly sharp, certainly not as dangerous as a porcupine.
It kinda tickles when you try to pet a hedgehog, too. At least, the one I petted. Definitely not sharp enough to do any damage to a person. Unless you jam one point-ends-first into your eye, I suppose... but that's true of most anything.
Guys, absolute n00b question
Customer has purchased an SSL certificate, but all they've been sent is the certificate in, uh, raw form I suppose. A text file
@ChrisS Say, is there an easy way to see why/what caused a sudden rep loss? I seem to have dropped 40 points at once in the last few minutes, which I assume means something with 4 upvotes got deleted (?), but is there any way to easily see what it was?
Oops, never mind, I figured it
@Chloe rename the extension and place it in the right directory/paste the text into the text box. :)
15:23
@HopelessN00b There's a tool to convert it
Mornin' Gents.
@Chloe Ah, well hopefully that works too. Kinda depends on what exactly the cert is for and being used by. I had to update a whole bunch of ILO "sites" with certificates that involved pasting an issued cert into the damn textbox through the web interface. That was unpleasant.
@HopelessN00b Haha, never seen that before
@Chloe Yeah, me either. And unfortunately, documentation on this is sparse and the scripted approaches I could find wouldn't work at all with that ILO version, as if HP expected the cert to get applied by magic, or not at all, or something. Ugh.
And A Good Morning to you as well, @Chloe.
Anybody know offhand if the Office 2010 Compatibility Pack has something for automated recursive document conversion?
Ah. Found a technet article. Something about OMPM and Office File Converter. technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg298948.aspx
15:36
@Adrian Such a gent
Recursive... you mean automatic conversion of old format Office docs to the new format?
@HopelessN00b Yeah, couldn't think of the work 'Bulk'.
@Adrian There's also a GP setting to default new document file types to 2010.
@jscott Yeah, apparently the padawans aren't happy with GP settings. So I can't push that stuff through.
@Adrian This is for a Windows Domain? They don't like GP? Get new people.
15:40
@jscott Eww, can't think of why you'd want to do that instead of having the users Save Asin the new format on a one-off basis.
@jscott Setting has no effect on existing docs in the old format, though. :)
@84104 It's mostly Samba. And, yes, I wish I had that authority. I'd start with getting a new boss though.
His hiring protocols and decisions are shit.
@HopelessN00b Right, but if your goal is to move to the new format... Wouldn't defaulting to it for new docs make sense?
@HopelessN00b It takes 3 minutes to open Office2k3 documents in 2010.
I'm assuming that's what Adrian wants if he's looking for a tool to mass convert as well.
Mostly we're bulk converting due to bitching from the Admin staff because the time to open is so long. They have about 1000 spreadsheets, and so we've been tasked with the conversion process.
It's probably cheaper in staff time to do a bulk anyway.
15:43
Fair enough.

@Adrian on what, a PII? Holy hell, I've never seen performance *that* bad, and we've got some real clunkers...
@HopelessN00b It's accessed via a Samba service on a VM that mounts the drives via NFS. So the block locks don't work.
It spends 3 minutes trying to do block locks. 2010 docs seem to handle it more gracefully.
No budget to replace the existing file storage until next year. Hopefully it doesn't blow up before then since I'll probably just walk out rather than work the 100 straight hours to restore the damn thing.
Whoa, yeah, I can definitely see that. Keeping your resume up-to-date just in case, I assume?
@HopelessN00b Yeah. At some point my boss is going to get annoyed enough to fire me. It's what he does whenever someone even gets remotely close to challenging his 'Authoritay'.
Good stationary for your resignation letter? :)
My workplace sucks. But the vacation benefits rock since we're a non-profit that runs a Shelter program. I'm accruing 38 days of PTO/year currently
15:49
@HopelessN00b It's actually from one of the early episodes of NCIS making fun of Ziva's language gaps
@HopelessN00b I prefer feces-smeared parchment for resignation letters...
@Adrian ...8?!?!? weeks PTO? God damn, I'd kill and/or take a large pay cut for that. Guvmint can't tax vacation time.
@voretaq7 I prefer not to leave DNA behind at the site of a future crime scene, when possible.
@HopelessN00b Yeah. October next year it goes up to 42 days. It's tough to walk away from that.
Yeah, easy to see why you'd stay, even with all the BS you talk about suffering in your environment.
@Adrian Hmm, does it help if you turn off block locks in the Samba config?
My boss skirts the edges of legality by trying to nickel & dime us salaried staff by deducting for an hour or two here or there for doctor's appointments or trade shows, but it's tough to complain too much.
@derobert Nope. Already tried that one. It's already rejecting them, but Office 2010 doesn't seem to figure out that block locks are disallowed until it times out and eventually does a file lock.
15:53
@voretaq7 Good to know. I miss out on details like that having never watched any of those oddly popular CIS or CSI series.
@Adrian Nice. Sounds like M$ coders were really on the ball there.
And I'm not so keen on actually doing it either, since I imagine there's some Sharepoint and collaboration functionality that may be useful for the staff.
@derobert Meh, why spend time coding against a use-case when you can eliminate it by saying "not supported, buy our product for that functionality instead."
The boss is an amateur financial/day trader guy. His 'long-term' view is about 3 weeks these days.
@HopelessN00b My "Recently Closed" screen says nothing has been closed recently... I think it's broke.
15:56
@Adrian Is that single pool PTO or divided up into sick/vacation?
@ScottPack Single right now, but it's going to get divided due to local gov't interference. Technically we don't have 'sick' time, so the city is forcing all its contractors to offer that.
@Adrian Not bad. For salaried employees we offer 22 vacation per year, 18 sick days, and the university is closed 10.
Our boss bitches all the time about the fact that we get too much PTO. He wants us at our desks more. He hasn't quite figured out that if he pulls those stunts that his quality of staffing is going to drop even further.
@ScottPack The 'closed' days are charged to us though.
@Adrian Oh, that sucks. Ours aren't.
@HopelessN00b I can only watch them in small doses - the raging inaccuracies make me throw shoes :-/
15:58
@ScottPack As a Brit I find the idea of sick days just insane
@Chloe You're not the only one.
@HopelessN00b Who said (a) it was my feces, and (b) I was doing the smearing?
@Chloe Howso?
@voretaq7 Well, over here if you're sick, you're sick
@Chloe It's also worth noting that this is the first job I've had that offered PTO.
@ScottPack I can live with it. The staff that work all the hours serving homeless folks and can't holidays don't get much choice about it.
15:59
@Chloe oh, so your country isn't batshit crazy then?
@voretaq7 We're no utopia, but I like to think we're a step ahead. That said, the current crop of leaders are desperately pushing us away.
Over here the vast majority of salaried jobs will pay you full pay while you're sick. Normally up to a certain amount of time per illness, but for a few days or weeks certainly. With those that don't pay, we have statutory sick pay. It's not much, but basically the government pays
It's different for hourly workers, I'm not really up that, but they get statutory sick pay too
@Chloe Here you usually get 5 paid sick days per year, if you need more than that you have FMLA but that's a joke, and "2 weeks" (10 days) paid vacation time is the base standard (most places let you work up to 4 over the course of your employment)
@Chloe That depends on your jurisdiction, here in NY hourly workers aren't guaranteed (any meaningful) statutory sick time but I believe they are in Cali
@Chloe That's one of the few nice things about IBM. Unless you were out for weeks, it was no big deal. You simply get paid because you were employed. Especially if you were working at least a few hours/day from home.
@voretaq7 Good point. I may have to add that to the fuck-you-too! repertoire, with those considerations.
Our boss was even cool enough to let you take a month to stay with family and work from your company laptop wherever you were staying.
16:03
@HopelessN00b Helper Monkeys man. Gotta have Helper Monkeys!
@Adrian That's pretty awesome
@voretaq7 Here FMLA doesn't grant you any additional PTO, it just protects your position.
@Chloe My boss was a rockstar, but it was a dead-end position with no real room for growth.
@ScottPack Exactly.
@Chloe Well, over here, if you don't limit sick days, you end up with a lot of "sick" time for ethanol-ingestion related maladies immediately on either side of the weekends.
@HopelessN00b Oh you can still into bother for taking the piss over here
Though I'll admit, from an employers perspective it's far far harder
16:04
@ScottPack that's why I said it's a joke :) Also it doesn't protect your position very well - your company can replace you (especially if you're a key employee), and then when you come back find a paltry excuse to get rid of you and keep the cheaper replacement...
After 2 weeks it's standard practice (May even be law) to get a note from your doctor, too
@voretaq7 We're actually strongly recommended to file FMLA paperwork any time you take more than 3 consecutive sick days. So that it can be used to help discredit any absence complaints against you.
@voretaq7 Pretty much yeah.
@ScottPack I'm generally of the opinion that if you need to miss 3 days of work (absent say coming down with influenza on Monday) you really should be seeing a doctor :)
Around here, it's not uncommon for an employer to require a sick note for two day absences, or "sick" absences on Mondays or Fridays, precisely because there's so much abuse of using a "sick day" to create a long weekend.

Seems a little silly to me, but whatever. I mean, if they provide enough value, let them get away with taking a long weekend every now and then. If not, they should probably be fired anyway.
@voretaq7 Generally yeah. Child rearing is one of those interesting ones, and usually when I see people take longer stretches.
16:07
@HopelessN00b yeah - I'll admit I've done the "sick day Friday" or "sick day Monday" on occasion, but it's not my habit to do so
@voretaq7 Why? 3 - 5 days is reasonable to come down with something and get over it
@voretaq7 According to our policies, if you are taking leave after adoption or birth to "bond with the child" that's vacation, if you are doing it to "assist in caring for the mother (or whatever)" then it's sick time.
(also oddly I tend to get sick on fridays which usually means Monday I'm not in any condition to be at work)
@ScottPack I take it you guys don't have maternity or paternity leave?
@Chloe Again, idiots abusing it. "I don't feel like coming for work this week" being used as a justification for calling off sick for the week.
16:08
@Chloe My employer does not, no. Some employers do.
@Chloe If you get sick wednesday evening that's Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday for recovery -- MAYBE Monday. If you're still so sick on Monday that you don't think you can make it to work Tuesday it's time to make an appointment to see your doctor -- we're talking about more than a cold now.
@Chloe Most every employer over here has it in some form. If not officially named as such, then called extended sick leave, or a sabbatical, or what have you. For maternity leave anyway. Paternity leave is less common.
I've been can't-get-out-of-bed sick a few times, but it's never lasted more than a day or two before I started recovering to at least the point of answering emails :)
@HopelessN00b So, that's a no. Really it's just taking sick leave for that purpose.
@ScottPack Well it's functionally the same thing when they give you x "extra" "sick days" for child-related leave that you're allowed to take. Probably just an accounting distinction for those damned number-pushers.
16:13
Oh, I've never seen that.
We don't have statutory M/P leave (outside of FMLA and a few states with progressive labor laws), but most companies offer decent maternity leave because otherwise they're branded as misogynists, which leads to offering paternity leave or they get branded with gender discrimination.
Most companies do have a "couples working here can only use ONE of these options" clause though.
America is weird
@Chloe s/weird/fucked up/
ftfy
Enh, it's really a function of not trusting our politicians enough to formally encode every little rule like this into law. At least on this issue.

No formal, standardized law, so lots of different approaches to do the same thing by a different name.
@HopelessN00b I've only ever seen where someone expends their normal sick pool and calls it "[mp]aternity leave" to distinguish actually being sick.
16:16
Personally, I find it weird and fucked up the way the rest of the more liberal developed world does trust a bunch of asshatted professional liars and sociopaths to create one-size-fit all rules backed with the force of law for every little thing. YMMV, I guess.
@ScottPack Really? What area of the country? And industry sector? Making someone take regular sick time for [m/p]eternity leave sounds like a really crappy practice that's not exactly going to attract the best and brightest.
@HopelessN00b Ohio and Higher Ed.
Honestly, I'm still not accustomed to the whole notion of being given PTO to begin with.
@ScottPack as in you prefer unpaid leave, or you prefer "request and we'll grant it if we feel like it" systems?
@ScottPack Oh, that's right, you're Ohio too. I can only say that's bizzare, the difference in our experiences. I'm down the road from OSU and have only seen that kind of dumbassery regarding benefits in low-margin sectors like logistics and manufacturing for unskilled labor.
@voretaq7 I definitely prefer being given PTO as an employment benefit. It's been my experience that, outside of enterprises, it is unusual.
@HopelessN00b Down the road as in still in in the city, or along the main highway south?
@ScottPack it's pretty normal in NY - hourly workers usually bank vacation hours based on time worked and lots of companies bank vacation that way (though you can take it before you've earned it)
Skilled trades (electricians and the like) don't get PTO usually unless they're direct employees, but that's skilled trades and they can make a year's salary in a month if they really work at it
16:24
Our hourly employees start our earning less PTO than salaried, but over time they earn more and their storage cap is higher.
@ScottPack As in same city. Overgrown cow-town, really, but I guess every calls it a city or a "greater metropolitan area" so I should just go with it.
@HopelessN00b Hey, this place is twice as large as the biggest place I had previously lived. It's all about perspective. :)
W.A.N.T.
@voretaq7 Isn't that ill will?
that or it's a knockoff
@Basil yup. new shirt
Speaking of shirts, there's a new Zombie Squirrel shirt in the illwillpress shop (Been there like 2 weeks and I... http://fb.me/2f229lhaE
16:26
Yeah, well the uppity school I went to in the upper-class suburb around here was literally right next door to a cow pasture, so I'm sticking with overgrown cow-town.

Maybe I'm just to "cosmopolitan" for Ohio, heh. :)
@HopelessN00b Could be worse. Could be an overgrown pig town with delusions of snobbishness.
maps.google.com/… <-- Hollister is a cow town.
Just for all those "surfer dudes" wearing it - Nowhere near the water, and flat enough that sidewalk surfing is no fun.
@HopelessN00b You in public or private?
@ScottPack No doubt. I'm "originally" from an overgrown farm-town with extreme temperatures and swarms of mosquitoes large enough to block out the sun, so I appreciate that Ohio's not that bad, in the grand scheme of things.
Private sector. Did public sector for a brief while, and decided I'd rather blow my brains out than deal with that shite, so I thought maybe I should try the private sector.
@HopelessN00b What's a mosquito? ::douses county with insecticide::
16:32
@voretaq7 Preaching to the choir, man. Fuck the environment, and the damned bald eagles, I'm tired of having my blood sucked out through the skin. bring back DDT.
@HopelessN00b Every October we host a 1 day security seminar/conference. Generally the audience, while not strictly closed, was ostensibly limited to either university, or state public higher ed, etc. If it's actually open to the public this year you want me to let you know?
@HopelessN00b oh, I wasn't being facetious
Anyone looking for work in New York?
because of the ZOMG TERRORIST MOSQUITOS HAVE WEST NILE VIRUS BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS WITH SIX LEGS AND WINGS we have spraying every year
@ewwhite i'll take money - don't much wanna work any more than I am though :P
@ewwhite Lol, don't tell me the new job's grown weary already....
16:34
@HopelessN00b They're hiring another me.
There's an open role.
Oh, well, 'gratz. They probably want someone who knows how to do more with Linux than the ability to use the command line, and occasionally not destroy the OS install, though... but if not, I 'd consider taking a job messing up Linux boxes in New York...
@HopelessN00b why not?
what's the worst you could do
How bad could it be?
(cut to picture of angry stockbrokers knocking over the bull statue)
Right, my thoughts too... unfortunately the interviewers don't seem to agree with my cavalier outlook on catastrophe-avoidance.
16:40
@voretaq7 We had two guys driving all over town for two weeks dropping packets of bacteria in the sewers to kill the mosquitoes. Seemed to work well. Bonus: Less mosquitoes.
@ChrisS You guys get skeeters big enough to fly you away to the nests, don't you?
@ChrisS yeah I wish we'd do that. Instead we spray chemicals.
Oh, good. We have plenty of duplicates of the hp ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) for Microsoft Windows 2000 ... clogging up the system drive on our Server 2008 SQL box. What the unholy hell did the last guy actually do around here?!?!?
mosquito dunks (BT) work pretty well
@ScottPack Depends on exactly where you are, skeeters don't fly very far, but yea some places do.
16:42
in fact when I repot plants I grind them up into the potting soil to kill the fungus gnats that infest FUCKING EVERY BAG OF DIRT EVER
We had super-mosquitoes in my home town. Only way to kill 'em is with DDT or a flamethrower... and stupid gun control laws really limit civilian access to flamethrowers. :(
@ChrisS I've found Disney to be downright unsettling. The rest of Florida is a deafening buzz of mosquitos and other disease infested critters. Disney property, however, is so...devoid of such things it's rather like a deafening silence.
@ScottPack Disney is MAGICAL!
(And by magical I mean "The ground is saturated with chlordane and DDT")
@voretaq7 What else are you going to water the plants with?
@ScottPack Goat urine.
16:46
Speaking of...time to go see about getting a prescription for contacts that don't make me want to blind myself.
Gentlemen. @voretaq7.
In an effort to improve questionable (to me) migrations, I'd like to know if you guys would like this (been flagged as appropriate for SF):

Q: Best way to keep configuration for server reinstallation?

GunnarI have a server at home running Ubuntu 12.04 which has grown messy over the years. I have fiddled with various packages, desktop environments (for VNC) etc. and I would like to reinstall it to start again, and have better control over what goes into the box. But I want to keep much of the config...

@ScottPack GOAT. URINE. :-)

Q: How to forcast the spec of a Linux load balancer?

javanoI would like to build a Linux load balancer with SSL off load with sticky sessions. I would like to do this with either Pound or Pound and HAProxy. I haven't done this before, and I have been wanting to learn about both HAProxy and Pound for a while now. Finally I have a small use case for it to ...

@studiohack yeah we can probably take that
@voretaq7: OP seemed satisfied, and got a comment from the HAProxy author
16:49
@voretaq7 sending your way then
@KyleBrandt yeah that one turned out well, I even upvoted both of you :)
The author tried to ask the question well, so those I think it is worth giving a little time
Maybe there should be a delayed review function
@studiohack The general rule of thumb is that "home" questions are never on-topic on SF. But by removing that one word it works...
@ChrisS shoot, you're right actually, thanks for reminding me of that. I forgot that one, it's been a while.
lotsa blue names in here
All the cool folk hang out in the Comms Room

16:55
@studiohack 's just like IRC
except with more GOAT URINE jokes.
Basil does too
Well, that's actually a decent, SA-applicable question, so editting out that one "four letter word" shouldn't ruffle any feathers...
@voretaq7 lol
Gah, so many das questions :(
OHAI - I CAN HAS 27 CHAINED SATA DRIVES?

@voretaq7 IN RAID 10Z!
@Basil RAID 00?

Q: Short description of an accomplishment

WardSometime in the near future, I will achieve the (dubious) distinction of being "the person who has cast the most votes on questions and answers on StackExchange." I want to add a short statement about this to my SE profile. But the way I phrased it in the last paragraph seems awkward and somewh...

17:05
@Ward ಠ_ಠ
@Ward "First person to cast 50,000 votes on the StackExchange network."
Or "family of sites" or whatever if you don't like "network."
And on that note, I'm off to see if they've started stocking the lunch room with heroin yet. #$%$ing users.

Ticket title: `Tritno 2 Hard 2 use` #$^@ing $%@#-&$% piece of #$%@ user!!!!!
@Ward I like the Diebold badge idea
or a Chicagoan badge.
May as well work Al Capone into that badge... nothing more suitable for a voting accomplishment badge as his "vote early, vote often" quote.
17:41
Hello everyone
I have a question if you don't mind guys
@el.severo look at the top right corner of this chat first please :)
@pauska: Ok, 10x!
@voretaq7 I haven't had Goat Urine since the last time I visited my brother. Jerk stocks up on Natty Light.
2
Doesn't mean you can't ask questions here, just that you're not gonna get live support.
@ScottPack Natty Light, the beer preferred by 4 out of 5 broke frat boys!
@HopelessN00b Don't forget mockery. There's always a possibility of mockery.
17:49
ok I have to admit, the iphone5 is impressive
OTOH, I'm being faced with a distinct probability of having to hack together Wordpress User Authentication via Apache > PAM > NIS.
real LTE, 5ghz 802.11n, way better battery
@HopelessN00b As he made his way out of being a broke frat boy and into a working professional I think he never got to the point that better beer was economically viable.
@Adrian That's a very good point, particularly for the mood I'm in. I'm currently trying to decide whom I should kill first, the idiot user who sent in the most incomprehensible bullshit ticket I've seen this year, or the helldesk guy who assigned it to me... choosing between mocking responses seems like a nice, light diversion in comparison.
@ScottPack Oh that is troubling. Sadly, I don't think there's a formal way to legally disown a sibling in Ohio.
@HopelessN00b Not really sure how the jurisdiction works. He's never lived here.
17:56
Yes, those cross-jurisdiction legal matters can be sticky... ideally, the courts would recognize the magnitude of his atrocities and hear the case anyway, but I think you may just be stuck with him as a legally-recognized sibling, despite his deplorable decisions.
kill plz

Danielle PhillipsI have published a business website using Yahoo Site builder. I would like to make a mobile version but do not know how. I am relatively new to site building, etc. Help is appreciated!
