@Adrian No, no joke. Am I possibly overpaid? I heard that and my first thought was they were nucking futs.... even more so than I used to believe.
@HopelessN00b No, what's plain nuts is my employer wanting to pay $35k for Developers.
@Adrian That's actually pretty good... you'll get a lot of solid interns at that rate, especially if you're flexible enough to work around their college class schedules. :)
@Chopper3 He may as well be speaking a foreign language. Is that layer 1 negotiation or something?
@HopelessN00b Yeah, not so much here. That whole non-compete/no 2nd jobs rule. And it shows when you consider the quality of staff that we get.
@84104 @Chopper3 It's a bloody homework question, most likely. Undergraduate student in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Current academic focus on networks and protocols.
23:11
@MichaelHampton Maybe I need to question peoples motives more.
@84104 You should. You learn all sorts of interesting things. It's also a useful skill to have when navigating office politics.
23:25
@MichaelHampton Seems like a lot of effort. A better skill for navigating office politics is knowing how to make a body disappear with nothing more than a hacksaw and a dozen gallons of lye.
@MichaelHampton Am I being too nice by linking that kid a primer on SONET? I won't lose my BOFH credentials for that minimal amount of pity/mercy, will I? Or should I delete the answer just to be on the safe side?
@HopelessN00b I was tempted to flag your post as NAA, since it is basically just a link. I probably would have posted a comment instead.
Or taken the time to post the actual answer.
BTW, since you found the document, what IS the answer?
I thought about it, but I'm not really sure what he's asking, and a simple primer on the topic is 34 pages of PDF... if someone could help narrow down the question, I'd be happy to post an answer to what he's probably asking. :)
OMFG.
Is he really asking ~"how does the device know when it's received the start of a frame/packet??"
A new manager filed a ticket asking for "a computer to be installed in a office". No idea where. Was queried as to where, she said she'd put a sign on that door.

I'm not sure why we hire managers that are less intelligent than the furniture they sit on.

@Adrian What is the sq footage of your building? Given the size, i am guessing bigger then 30,000?
@Zoredache It's actually only 14k ft^2 at this remote site. But it's a little rabbit's warren of small offices with 189 jacks.
@HopelessN00b that seems to be the question. I think we have a similar question on the site for Ethernet.
@Adrian contiguous or multiple buildings?
Say, could one of you guys with the privilege reject my proposed SONET tag wiki and summary edits, so I can submit what I actually want? I hit <kbd>Enter<kbd> when I meant to do <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd>.
@Andrew At that one site, it's 3/4ths of 1 building. The owner's still operate a branch office out of the top floor of the other half. We have the other half of the top and all the bottom.
We're up to 11 buildings that house 14 different office/program facilities.
As fscked-up crazy as this workplace is and as skin-flint thin as the budgeting is, it's a $26M .org.
23:38
ah yes, those are the fun ones. We have an office where the patch cabinet the owners put in fell off the wall and is now sitting in a shelf.
Oh, eww. I guess "ask your EE prof" isn't a better answer than a link-only answer, huh?

Seems really, very off-topic for an SA site.... I'll just delete my answer and put it as a comment.
@HopelessN00b "if it's homework, read the spec. If you're just curious, ask your lecturer"
@HopelessN00b I think the question itself could be good, if they just added something to make it more practical.
@HopelessN00b it might be rejected now. I don't mess around with tag wikis much.
@Zoredache it's a telecomms engineering question, not a sysadmin question. I don't see how it could ever be on topic.
@Zoredache in the context of Systems Administration? How so? I mean, it's not a horrible question as a general point of curiosity/seeking out knowledge, but by the time you're drilling down to how individual bits are parsed at the physical level, you're way past what's going to be useful to an SA.
23:44
@Andrew Well at least with Ethernet, and some adapters, I believe you can use software to adjust the Inter-Frame-Gap to tweak performance. Is the same true for Sonet?
Anyway, if it was possible, and how to tweak the framing might make it a sysadmin question.
Alright, fair enough.
@Zoredache That did it, thanks a bunch!
Has anyone had any experiences with lannerinc.com that they would like to share?
I am trying to find something appliance like box with at least 3 1GB ethernet ports, that is small, fanless, intel based, and inexpensive.
Never heard of lannerinc.com (looks neat, though). What's your definition of inexpensive?
less then $600.
Something like this store.netgate.com/Netgate-FW-7535-1U-P1695C84.aspx gets close, but I am hoping to find something cheaper.
