@goodguy5 Given that orcs are his invention, I was trying to make a point related to what SPavel was objecting to, but since the discussion ended, let's not have me dredge it back up again.
Is there a way to automate D&D without losing the creativity. I played an adventures league game where the DM kept presenting the players with choices. For example on the "Day at the races" we could either attack with whip or defend with shield. Another example we were collecting ribbons which we...
@goodguy5 I don't fully understand their writing, but "Is there a system that plays like this?" is asking for us to recommend them a system. (A tool or game.)
i'm not even sure how to approach that. I've never played day at the races, it it supposed to be that limited or as the DM just trying to make it easier for the new players?
@NautArch From the other side, I'll tell you that it makes the first few sessions GMing pretty easy. I don't need to know a party's characters too well to know they've got +5 to hit, save DC 13, max +7 skill if expertised, and an AC in the 13-18 range that's pretty easy to guess based on class.
@Yuuki There is no arguing about taste. As to story telling styles, Tolkien's style was established written before TV became a thing. It had developed before talking movies became a method for story telling. Therefore, his style has a lot of description that you might not see now. I have other authors whose style I prefer over his.
@goodguy5 I agree. However, they didn't ask about that problem, and we must vote based on what the question currently is rather than what it should or could be. Since right now it's the former, it's closed as a shopping question.
I have read his version of Beowulf. Have been through his take on Kullervo, and am going through it again. It's a particular style of story telling that one can see bled into his later prose.
@nitsua60 @NautArch Is Day At The Races an intro AL adventure from DMs Guild?
@nitsua60 Is that as much of a problem at lower levels with rolled stats, though? I have usually built my encounters around the PCs strengths and weaknesses as well as my storylines so I'm not sure where differences would really come into play.
Even the huge AC issue in our main campaign isn't really because of stats, but because of magic items.
@goodguy5 it's not really important what reason we use to close a question, just important it gets closed. right now it's asking a shopping question, it's fine it gets closed as a shopping question.
@doppelgreener You're a better source of knowledge on that topic than I. I'd say the reason is important so that others can see WHY questions get closed.
Also, "Unclear" lends itself much more to "let's work this out" than "Shopping", which screams much more "YOUR QUESTION IS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD"
@doppelgreener I don't know if it's a shopping question, but it may be. The question asker needs to discuss with us/improve the question, clarify it, etc.
@goodguy5 For my money, all caps wasn't necessary there. Just sayin'. ;)
