Getting people out of D&D as their only game and into others can be fun.

I have plenty of non D&D games I'd like to play, but none that I'm willing to run.
Fate, Dresden RPG, Torchbearer, Mouseguard, Burning Wheel,

Most people's list of systems they are willing to run is 0 long

I'd like to try roll for shoes

mouseguard?

Basically Redwall, the game

5:15 PM
@goodguy5 redwall?

oh my god no way
I miss that series

@NautArch Basically, Mice and Mystics, the book

I've read almost all of them
is the RPG any good?

@SimonH. Well, if you want to play an RPG with mousey problems like food, winter, ans weasels, then check out Mouseguard.
It's supposed to be very good at its job
I've never found a group

so it's more like the books than D&D
that's neat

5:19 PM
I have exciting news for everyone! I'm starting my first IRL D&D campaign on Saturday!

My girlfriend wants to run either a Gamma World or World of Darkness game

Well more exciting for me.

You mean larping?

No, but not online.

@Anoplexian awesome! 5e? New players? Setting type? Players made?

5:20 PM
oh

@Hypersapien oooooh. Gamma World

5e, new players, starter campaign, and we're making on Saturday.

I'm going to an SCA-like camping trip at the end of the month.

@Anoplexian nice! Are you DMing?

I've never played 5e though. I played ad&d2.5e for my first time, anything to know?
No. XD

5:21 PM
@Anoplexian 5e is pretty balanced. Just have fun :) Have you decided on a character yet? Point buy or rolling stats?

I'm in 2 5e campains right now. One is pretty good, the other is just ok. Personally, I'd rather be playing some other system.

If you're going from AD&D to 5e, you'll probably have an easy time.

Rolling stats, my DM said it would be easier for everyone to start on a level field.

@Anoplexian A level field isn't rolling stats :) THat's point-buy. What's your stat rolling system?

@Anoplexian "level field" sounds like you're doing point buy.

5:22 PM
Roll 6 keep 3 is what I was told, but it may change.

The character progression in 5e is too forced. hardly any real options beyond race, class, and 3rd level class path.

Idk, session 0 is Saturday.

@Anoplexian Wow. And people thought my system was 18 fishing :)

You think point buy is a more level playing field?

@Anoplexian 100%

5:23 PM
@Anoplexian yes. it's nonrandom

That's why I'm glad I picked a mystic for one of my characters. A lot more options to pick from, and more in higher levels.

Everyone has the exact same amount of points to distritubte

@NautArch Well I roll like Wil Wheaton, so 18's aren't happening. xD

@Hypersapien "character progression is forced" confuses me as a statement.

In old school D&D you rolled your attributes on 3d6s in order.

5:24 PM
What are some things that are different from ad&d2e vs 5e? Anything radical?

It'd be a shorter list to say what's similar.

Oh geez.

May contain: Dungeons, Dragons.

So I should expect something completely different then?

Yes. Combat rules are hardly near the same thing as 2E.

5:26 PM
Also, my DM said that as we're new we won't be using Inventory weight.
Welp.
Guess I have some reading to do.

A lot of rules streamlining.
(almost) No more weird charts of abilities and saves.
Skills are categorized by ability.
No d100s (usually).

And this really slick mechanic. Advantage/Disadvantage

There's no Thaco, there's no weapon initative modifiers, there's no variant AC against pierce/slash/bludgeon

@Anoplexian It's a LOT simpler

Huh.

Unified XP progression, saving throws... oof, just read how those work now.

5:26 PM
It's made specifically for people with no role playing experience to be able to easily get into.

oh yea! I forgot the variable XP progession (of old editions)

The same six stats you know and love are there. Exceptional Strength ended with 2E.

Oh, well that's good to know. I'm a huge RPG (VG) fan as well. If it's that different from 2e, what about close to Divinity:OS?

I don't like that they got rid of skill ranks

No more level caps based on race/class

5:27 PM
I've played that more recently.

Dual classing is gone forever.

@Hypersapien And I"ve got an upcoming campaign in 5e with that system :) And yes, I rolled an 18.

(Not the same as multiclassing)

well.... kinda
Dual Classing is just a clunky multiclassing

What's the difference between the two @Maximillian?

5:28 PM
@Anoplexian I hadn't played since AD&D before 5e, but with a 25 year gap I didn't remember much :)

Mutliclass was progressing in multiple classes at once. Dual-class was a human option to end all progression in one class and start another.

@NautArch You've probably forgot more about D&D than I've even learned.

@Anoplexian You have your basic 8 classes, but at 3rd level you choose a class path that lets you specialize in some aspect of the class.

@Anoplexian I wouldn't generally recommend multiclassing unless there's a very specific thematic build you're going for. The loss of single class progression can be a big deal for delaying major class milestones.

No more rules for stat changes based on age.. (Not 100% sure 5E weeded that out though..)

5:29 PM
@Anoplexian ohgodno. I was just a player back then and we weren't that serious.

Wait there's no age in 5e?

There's no gains or penalties for age, last I recall.
2E had adjustments for that.

@Anoplexian There's no "when you reach 55, you gain 1 int, but lose 1 dex " or whatever

@Maximillian which is good because in the last session our barbarian goliath got frightened by a ghost and aged 40 years.

Haste no longer ages the caster a year, I think...

5:30 PM
oh yea!
oh man, you're bringing me back

@Anoplexian you still die of old age, but you don't get weaker as that age approaches.

@NautArch Fair enough, I hadn't planned more than a Tiefling Paladin, but I like to keep options.
That's a bit odd though.
I've been reading a lot of LitRPG too, so hopefully I'm a bit more up to date than I seem.

No more class based XP gains. (Such as rogue getting 1xp per gold that goes into their hands.)
This also eliminated metagame wizards firing off all their unused spells before rest for the XP gain.

Wait so all exp is based on achievement then for all classes @Maximillian?

Neither of our DMs even hand out XP. They just tell us when we level up.

5:32 PM
I forget, in 5E is XP listed as an optional progression method?

@Hypersapien My first DM did that but in exp %s.

There's more emphasis on group XP awards and not so much on individual awards.

So he'd say something like "You all gain 15%"

that's a complicated question.
1. everyone gets xp based on encounters. That counts defeating monsters, traps, etc.
2. everyone SHOULD also get xp based on interacting with and exploring the world.

@goodguy5 Right, but in old versions I remember our (veteran) rogue accumulating EXP just by selling all items, then splitting it with us.
The DM let him, but the rest of us weren't all that knowledgable.

5:34 PM
@Anoplexian I've got a paladin that started at level 5 and is now level 16. Love the class and the character. Have you considered what oath you'll take?

No, I've never played a Paladin before.

There's less emphasis on the individual and more emphasis on group play and progression.

@Anoplexian right. So. now it's just based on what the character does, not what the class does, if that makes sense.

ALSO CLASS REQUIREMENTS ARE MOSTLY A THING OF THE PAST.

Yeah that makes sense.
Wait what?

5:35 PM
Becoming a paladin is not the result of rolls so good they think you're cheating.

you can play a wizard with 8 int (or a paladin with 8 charisma or whatever)

I have a Wood Elf Arcane archer in one game, and a Gnome Mystic in the other.

@Anoplexian And as for Paladin tips - The spell smites are generally not that interesting. Your spell slots are better left for divine smites or buffs like Bless.

Much like your public school counselor's advice, you can be anything you want.

It won't be a GOOD wizard, but you can create it.

5:35 PM
... It's just not always a good idea.

@NautArch Good to know, I haven't really explored magic all that much in D&D tbf.

@Hypersapien it won't be the worst wizard

There's no more cardboard cutout of a Paladin that says "You must be this charismatic to enter the church."

@Maximillian HA!
Are there any new classes or races in 5e that weren't in 2e?

Being a bard doesn't require the sacrifice of a goat and burning of incense to get the correct dice rolls.

5:37 PM
@Maximillian That's what kept me from going Paladin before.

Warlock is a core class now

so is monk and ranger

Paladins no longer require getting a Holy Avenger to gain half their power set.

@Anoplexian But overall, I love the Paladin. There's a lot of freedom for what type of paladin you want (big damage focus, more tank type focus, etc), you can be a support player, and you can be ahealer.

I /think/ 5E has rules for non Lawful Good paladins.
Aren't they any 'Good' in 5E?

5:38 PM
That's awesome. I'm really trying to penetrate the magic side this time.

You can be any alignment in 5e for a paladin

I played a Human Warrior (boring, IK).
Wait
What

it's about the Oath and not about the alignment. Your powers aren't given by the Gods, but by your commitment to your oath.

Any alignment?

any alignment

5:38 PM
@NautArch Plus great class fantasy and roleplay options

Now for Magic, a lot of the staple, iconic spells are still there. But their casting, cost, and effect may have been tweaked/adjusted.

That makes it much easier to play.

Alignment only effects Detect/Protection From Good/Evil/Law/Chaos

@Anoplexian Except the content of the oath will apply SOME restrictions to you

Easier just to list the general classes
Barbarian
Bard
Cleric
Druid
Fighter (and Eldritch Knight, the arcane fighter subtype)
Monk
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue (And Arcane Trickster, the rogue subtype)
Sorcerer
Wizard
Warlock

5:39 PM
Though I think the Bigsby Hand series of spells are reduced since 2E

@Hypersapien nope, Protection from good/evil isn't about alignment. it's about creature type.

Oh, really?

I think Mordainken's Disjunction is there, but is just Disjunction now.

Wow.
I'm so excited.

The last caster I played was a 3.5 druid

5:40 PM
Paladin seems much more approachable than it used to be.

Most of the classes are pretty approachable.

But some have ALWAYS been that way.
Warrior is pretty straightforward.

@Anoplexian I don't know if you guys are allowing Feats...but feats are where it's at :)

Feats?

Right. Skills/Feats replaces the entire profiency system.

5:41 PM
WHAT
All my knowledge. q.q

On the bright side you get to skip entirely the hassle of 3.0 'half rank' skill buying.

At certain levels you can increase your stats by two points. Instead of doing that you can choose to take a feat instead.

So what you're all telling me is to treat 5e like a completely different beast then?
Lol

basically yea

Exactly

5:41 PM
It's a new game that has some familiar labels.
Swords still work like swords but nobody is gonna know what you mean by THAC0

except a longsword still does 1d8+strength, you still use a d20 to hit, etc.

Ok. How close does it relate to Divinity:OS (VG)?

Uh. Not at all. Divinity is kind of a unique entity.

@Anoplexian Feats are an optional thing (like multiclassing) found in Chapter 6 of the PHB. (have you read the PHB yet?)

Like, I have an Arcane Archer. Instead of taking a stat bonus I took the Sharpshooter feat instead. Well worth it.

5:43 PM
In the process now @NautArch

Was crit range a thing in 2e?

@Anoplexian I would start with just going through the process of making a human fighter.

So wait, there's no more THAC0?

So you're going to have Captain America moments of 'I get that reference!' as you flip through the PHB v5.

No more doing the math vs my AC/

5:43 PM
@Anoplexian no. It's gone
I'm not even sure what THAC0 is. I started with 3.5.

@Anoplexian When you're doing an 'heroic stat roll" system where you end up with higher stats to start, Feats can be a very big deal given how powerful they can be.

no.
It's just the die and your "to hit" bonus vs the "Armor Class" of the enemy.
1d20+5

To Hit Armor Class 0. Every class had a number, per level. It's what you had to roll to hit AC 0.

Even if you aren't, the bounded accuracy of 5e helps with going 'outside the box' on character design.

So you had to plot the math in your head to figure out what AC you actually hit on a roll.

5:44 PM
^

Negative AC was what you wanted.
This was convoluted as all hell.

And now you want positive AC
More AC is better, as makes sense.

so you didn't roll against their AC directly

You have a "Proficiency bonus" that goes up at certain levels. If you have proficiency in a skill or weapon or tool, you add your proficiency bonus when using it.

So a THAC0 of 18 means you need 18 to hit on someone with 0 AC, and 21 for someone with 3 AC.
If I remember correctly.

5:45 PM
5E also reduces the amounts of bonuses and penalties that stack on a roll.
It focuses on 'advantage' and 'disadvantage'
In advantage, roll 2d20, take the better. Disadvantage, roll 2, take the worst.

@Maximillian I think that was mostly 3.x/4

as in, there are no stacked bonuses/penalties unless you've got some special ability or spell going on. But if you have 2 ways of generating advantage and 1 way of generating disadvantage, it just says "Roll normally"

If I recall, numbers in 5E don't get absurdly large with level progression either.

@Anoplexian If your attack roll is greater than their AC, you hit. That's it.

So how is % to hit calculated?
Wait

5:47 PM
@Anoplexian dibs, I got it....

@Anoplexian Haha Nooooooo % to hit here

@Anoplexian, keep in mind that the base AC is 10.

It is really as simple as that. If you roll equal to or greater than the target number for AC it is successful.

Roll a d20, check if you have modifiers, see if your roll is over the target AC.

Someone with no armor at all has an AC of 10

5:48 PM
If you hit, proceed to the damage roll.

Unless they’re a monk.
Or barbarian.

so if they have an AC of 18, you need to roll 19 or higher

And if you roll a 20, you're likely checking for a critical hit.

So if I have +3 to hit, and roll a 15 vs AC 14?
I hit?
That simple af.

Yes

5:48 PM
Basically.

@Anoplexian indeed

Quick maffs

The deck of many things still exists.

YOu can absolutely play this under the influence ;)

But in the same scenario, if they have AC 18, I miss?

5:49 PM
^

Like we said. They made it a LOT simpler.

@SimonH. 18 or higher, unnatural

Is damage calculation done in the same way?

Some DMs like to use a crit chart instead of simply doubling the damage.

@Anoplexian If there's a tie, it favors whoever rolled the d20

5:49 PM
Roll your dice, check for damage mods, apply to foe.

Ties go to the roller

I think so.
1d8 for a long sword, so roll 1d8, add your strength modifier.

@SirCinnamon I thought you had to roll higher than AC in 5e?

@SimonH. Equal or greater

@SimonH. no. ties go to the roller

5:50 PM
Ok, so damage is the same.
That makes me feel safer. :3

My DM has a deck of crit cards he likes to use when a crit is confirmed.

@Anoplexian Crit damage is simply roll damage dice twice, apply modifiers once.

Are crits only on Nat 20s?

oh! Grapple rules!

@Hypersapien That sounds fun, whats in it?

5:51 PM
Can we talk about grappling next?

Targeting and effect terms are standardized. Line of Sight, Line of Effect, cone, line, sphere, burst, emanation, etc.

Yes. No more crit range

@Anoplexian Unless you are a Champion Fighter, which starts to expand based on level.

@Anoplexian By default yes, but I think there are some ways to increase that

@NautArch This is one of the mouse houseruled rules I would say

5:51 PM
How do you guys do exploding dice?

most*

@SirCinnamon Lots of different fun effects depending on the type of attack.

@SirCinnamon ?

@SimonH. in 5e? we don't.

So any hit within the range of your weapon as a nat 20 is a crit?

5:51 PM
@SirCinnamon Keep in mind that it also does critical fails as well.

@Anoplexian I think so

@goodguy5 I mean, if you houseruled it

Crit fails are a base rule in 5E?

Exploding dice?

@SimonH. I'd be super reluctant to allow exploding dice in 5e.

5:52 PM
@NautArch My fingers are struggling - I would say that the crit damage rule is one of the most common house rules

I'm not familiar with exploding dice

@Maximillian Nope

@Hypersapien a crit lets you roll a second time for the attack

roll max value dice again.
1d0. roll 10? roll again and add it

2E had the Arquebus that had exploding dice. the d10 as goodguy explains.

5:52 PM
@SimonH. I would glue tiny bombs to the dice, as a deterrent

It's much simpler as you've all said.

@MikeQ razorblades are cheaper, but anyways, why do you think it's so OP?

Often a non-issue as the Arquebus required DM permission to buy and could also explode and kill the user.

Have they simplified the inventory weight system at all?

@Anoplexian If you decide to go Heavy Weapon Paladin and pick Great Weapon Fighting as your fighting style, you should talk to your DM about how it works with divine smites. My table likes to roll dice, so we allow it work with smites.

5:53 PM
Oh, good question. I don't recall how 5E handles that.

@Anoplexian Yes. You can carry up to your strength score x 15. Below that, you're unencumbered. No intermediate amounts of encumbrance.

@SimonH. it's not that it's inherently OP, it's that it adds an entire other layer of swingyness on an already swingy system

So there's no more % encumbered to rolls?

@Anoplexian Yes, Encumbrance rules are listed regarding carrying capacity. But a lot of tables don't use them much.

@Anoplexian only as a variant rule

5:54 PM
@Anoplexian There are "Long rests" (8 hours) and "Short rests" (1 hour). Depending on what your class is and what abilities you have, you can get some charges of your spent abilities back with each.

And you can only do 1 Long Rest per day.

Right

@goodguy5 I feel like exploding dice can be super underpowered, depending. the odds of it being swingy are pretty low

Most of the terminology for '1/day' '1/week' powers/abilities aren't written that way anymore.

Ok, so RAW there's only E/U not penalties for 60/100 weight?

5:55 PM
They tend to revolve around rest periods.

That makes carrying 40 lbs of pickled herring (1c) a much easier prospect.

@Maximillian Are there any spells that recharge seperate from spell slots?

@Anoplexian Correct. You are either un-encumbered, or over-encumbered.

@Maximillian except when they are based on "dawn". Ugh.

How are familiars handled differently in it?

5:56 PM
@SimonH. Are you saying using exploding dice INSTEAD of crits? or in addition to the standard system?

@Anoplexian Familiars aren't attached to any class. Nothing depends on the familiar.

My DM was talking about removing inventory weight which I was initially OK with, but if it's not taking penalties, I might add it in.

Exploding dice = Chaining crits on the same attack?

@goodguy5 instead of crits

Sorry not familiars, followers.
Pets, etc.

5:56 PM
@Anoplexian It really is unlikely to come into play. Especially if you're going with a strength-based paladin.

@Anoplexian Some classes get an animal (or animal-like) companion, if that's what you're asking.

@SimonH. ohhhhhhh. Gotcha. I mean, then you have them 2-5 times as often, which can be fatal for 1st-3rd level characters

@NautArch The biggest problem for me was taking DEX penalties on rolls and having to do the math to figure out whether or not I was taking movement penalties.
@MikeQ Well for instance I asked my DM to have a cat as a companion.

@Anoplexian Youre movement is it's own stat now, so that won't happen. But yeah encumberance rules are binary and rarely come up

That's good to know.

5:58 PM
@goodguy5 what I did was made it so even when they roll a second time, they have to get over the target AC and if they don't then there's no additional damage

@Anoplexian Yeah, definitely not a problem in 5e. I mean, it can make sense to track it, it's just highly unlikely to ever be a problem for a high strength character.

Makes sense.

@SimonH. This sounds closer to how crits work in 3.5/PF rather than exploding dice. You roll to confirm the crit, yeah?

I used to get hit with some pretty serious damage because of encumberance.

@Anoplexian Beast companions are more of a thing as a Ranger archetype in 5e. Doesn't mean you can't have one, but if I was a DM i'd be very careful to not let it become a mechanical advantage or use otherwise you're minimizing a sublcass.

5:59 PM
Ah, gotcha.
