@SmokeDetector @M.A.R. You might want to rethink this. Question is asking for software.

@DavidPostill that was my thinking too. It looks like the guy is unrelated to the packages he is promoting and genuinely trying to answer the question
the PR seems to be stirring up mixed reactions, which I suppose is the outcome I expected and wanted ... github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/pull/655
there are really two separate questions there, one is mechanism and one is policy

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body, pattern-matching website in body, repeated URL at end of long post: Increasing blood circulation is the by xefalev on graphicdesign.SE

I'm thinking the mechanism part should be straightforward to settle; being able to document things with comments ought to be uncontroversial, but defining some standard comments to help us find the stuff which needs review could be stickier

tpu- by tripleee

11:46 AM
and then of course there's the stickier still question about preemptive blacklisting

My assumption is that there could be a script written to parse the list of keywords and pick out the ones with regex comments so that we can look through them periodically. Is that possible>

that's precisely the idea
we could add (?#nohits) for the ones with no Metasmoke hits I discovered yesterday as a first step towards controlled removal, for example (though I guess simply removing them would be uncontroversial as well)
but the regex comment facility is arguably ugly and obscure
I mainly selected that because it can be done straight from the !!/blacklist-keyword with no modifications if we just agree that we want to do that
otherwise, extending the blacklist to have an optional (or even required) comment on a separate line before each entry would probably be less atrocious
then we could annotate each entry with metadata such as when it was added, by whom, which post(s) it is supposed to trigger on, etc
which would allow for rather more extensive regression test coverage

Poll for people running Smokey instances: do you have MySQL already set up on them?

@ArtOfCode "Nobody ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the American public", or whatever it was that whatsisface said.

@ArtOfCode That's probably traditional email spam

@SmokeDetector lol "you just need to send a small payment of 654,491 Dollars"

@quartata yes, but not because of Smokey
I'm guessing Undo's Pi and DO don't but his EC2 will, angus probably doesn't, Thomas probably does

1:32 PM
So mixed.
When I originally proposed replacing all the different pickles that datahandling used with a database I thought sqlite at first but I realized it would be so much easier to sync with MS using MySQL. It seems like too much to ask people to set up though so now I'm questioning things

Using a database seems pretty redundant to me... we already have a database on metasmoke, and for the amount of data we'd be storing locally (not much), it's probably not worth requiring anyone who wants to run a Smokey clone to set up MySQL.

There's more locally than I had thought though

1:38 PM
@Henders yay!

* cue balloons and glitter! *

@quartata the critical question is, is using a database objectively better than using flat files, considering the extra setup required?
I don't doubt that excluding extra setup, using a database would be the Right Thing to do.

certainly one which requires maintenance outside of normal operation is a bit overkill, I'd say look at one of the noSQL options maybe if you are serious about this (recalling whimsically that at least some of them should be basically zero maint)
^ but I obviously don't have personal experience

does MySQL require maintenance outside of operation, beyond occasional updates (which would just get done along with the rest of the updates you have to do anyway, so no extra work)?

the one I see before me tends to write a lot of fluff to disk but maybe it's an old version
though stackoverflow.com/questions/25153532/… looks like indeed things have improved
