8:00 AM
@Grey What is Legrande?

@MattD That's awesome.
I love simulations like that.
I assume generation is how many tries it has had to learn to walk?

No, I think generation is a measure of how sober the creature is.

yes, generations can be assumed to be optimisation tries

I still don't understand what that thing is for (though it is cool)

well, they'll do a bunch of random changes, then see which one walks the furthest.
then use that as the base for the next changes

8:12 AM
I was curious to know wat was the first ever built comp-simulation. My research states "game of life" is the first of its genre. Is it true?

if theres a local minima (ie: its stuck not getting better) then you inject more randomness
@BlueBug no idea. its possible

iHave my I phone set to say "Hello again" in a GladOS voice when I unlock. It sounds really cool.

I have both games (1 and 2)
Though I haven't played the second yet

*was about to spoil the best part of 2, but deleted it at the last moment once I saw you haven't played it yet.
I think it's amazing that how Valve made inhuman/machanic characters to be felt so genuine.

8:21 AM
You mean the ending?
I know how it ends already
:(

it ends by you playing it again with developer commentary

of portal 2? no. I meant the scene where GLADOS does **@#$ and turns @#@!!1---203 and blames you for @#@!^^&

I mean with the moon thing
Lol
I wonder if this guy got in trouble

8:37 AM
Moorning!

It's 2:37 here in Texas
Where do you live?

Finland :)

8:51 AM
I guess I sent a message to the future then

well, what day is it?

Can anyone tell me what a "dumb star" is?

i guess you are actually speaking with the future

It was monday
At this time it's Tuesday

yeah, it´s tuesday 1153 here
So, you are speaking with the future ;)

8:54 AM
Are you not past Greenwich?

9:11 AM
it´s gtm + 2 here
or even 3 maybe
utc + 2 !

9:47 AM
hiya

Hey Alex

10:27 AM
sup

10:44 AM
I'm thinking I'll try to participate in the game jam, with libgdx
Never tried it though..

well, you can try it during the gamejam
it's not like you have to make the next crysis :)

heh true
I'm thinking of trying it out, before the jam itself

is that not cheating?

learning the tools and libraries?
s,the,some,

( it was a bad joke )

10:50 AM
oops.. sorry :D
Tordin, are you working on any games?

Radical, try and hit the up arrow.
On your keyboard.

um? that invokes edit-your-last-msg
did you mean .. read backlog?
not sure why you wanted me to hit the up arrow..

11:06 AM
Editing the last message yeah.
17 mins ago, by radical
s,the,some,
No need for that. :P

ah! heh thanks
irc habits ;)

11:19 AM
works!
thick bezier curves

nice!

Jon
11:37 AM
how do you do that gradient?

mesh.Vertices [j].Position = normal * 0.5f * (float)Thickness + curvePoints[j];
mesh.Vertices [j].Color = new Vector4(1,0,0,1);

mesh.Vertices [j+1].Position = -normal * 0.5f * (float)Thickness + curvePoints[j];
mesh.Vertices [j+1].Color = new Vector4(1,1,0,1);
like that
it's basically a triangle strip, the other side is red and the other is yellow

Jon
cool

11:58 AM
Random question here, Lets say i have a sphere i worldspace, and i want to transform the radius to ScreenSpace, It would be just to do the WorldToScreen transformation aswell with the radius?
Since if i have the radius of 0.5 i could just do a vector like ( 0.5f, 0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f ) * WorldToScreenTransformation
that should gain the same result right?

with a perspective camera, the screenSpace radius would differ based on its position(center of the sphere) relative to the camera..

thats true.
well, in this case it dont matter.
well, wait, maybe it will actualy

and for some cameras the sphere might not be uniform, um example, i imagine, near the edges of the view, .. so, the radius in screen space will differ depending on which direction you are measuring.. hm
brb

Yeah, thats true.
Completley forgot about that
good that i talked it over

wasted 1+ hours trying to debug why the hell the ads won't show up and the IAP store wasn't working properly
turns out the wifi wasn't working
DAMNIT

12:13 PM
pats Alex M on the head

back

if you open up my profile now, you will see I'm using my Identicon
a rare sight

I thought that was a gravatar.

the gravatar is user defined
the identicon is something generated by some sort of algo

Jon
12:39 PM
radical

12:56 PM
status.bitbucket.org I wonder why the Hg response time is so low

I managed to optimize that pretty good

heh cool :)

Jon
Very nice

recording that gif took some resources and lowered the fps, but the decrease is really little

dogecoin. such anonymous. so blockchain.

1:11 PM
did you see the coinye west?

I did not

afaik it got shut down (obvious why)

what was it?

crypto currency making fun of kanye west

ha
must have been funny

that's fucked up
obviously "parody" which is stringently protected by the 1st amendment

does anyone play DarkSouls here?

!me

why did u keep playing the game? the game is too punishing. From what I learn in school, the game seems supposed to be a complete failure.

I did not play it
"!" means "not" in programming
sorry
but I do play extremely punishing games
so that may not have put me off

1:32 PM
@BlueBug different people find satisfaction in different ways while playing

you trickery AlmoKun.

like my wife won't play something if she doesn't feel challenged within about 5 minutes
she played coop Dead Nation all the way through with me on a hard setting, but absolutely hated Castle Crashers.

a wife who plays video game with her husband? oh my. That's my dream.

heh well, she stopped about a year ago. still plays board games with me though

I normally don't feel like playing challenging games unless they are obviously fair
Dark Souls is an example of a fair game

1:34 PM
"video games aren't social enough"

if you ever lose, you lose because you suck
not because the game hates you

yeah I won't touch shit like "I wanna be the guy"

@AlexM. so do you like/played DarkSouls? if not any other game you felt punishing but fair?

baldur's gate
let me remember some more
gorky 17

Dead Nation is punishing but fair (on its harder levels, except maybe for the slicy guys)
Stealth Inc A Clone in the Dark (recommended)
Commando (original arcade version, not some NES knockoff)

1:42 PM
F.E.A.R. with the difficulty maxed out
the Commandos series

NOT fucking R-Type. I decided to go through that game some time in about 2002, and quit at level 4. It's mostly memorization of cheap spawn patterns.

Re-Volt is a very difficult arcade racer

Wipeout series qualifies as punishing but fair. learning the controls is really hard.

yup
also DethKarz
@Almo the dev behind Dark Souls argues that when the controls make the game difficult, you failed in making a fair game
also I forgot the king of difficult but fair RPGs
Gothic 1

If I remmeber right, I got all gold on 2nd difficulty (Vector) on Wipeout 3. that took some work. 8 tracks, 8 ships 1st place for 64 golds.
@AlexM. I don't agree at all.
Defender is a prime example.

1:46 PM
so mostly action games with strategy elements.

when you learn those controls you are god

@BlueBug I play mostly RPGs and FPSes
I am sure others can give better examples
@Almo I kinda do

what's unfair is when you fail over and over due to things you could not have dealt with unless you knew they were coming
so you step through bit by bit memorizing everything.

technical details such as control schemes shouldn't handicap the player

that's unfair.
control schemes are not "Technical details." In a game like defender or Wipeout, the controls ARE the game
mastering the controls is what you do
I can see that some people would not want to invest their time in learning a control system, and game designers should be aware of the difference between games that require control-learning and those that don't
Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars is a prime example. Great game, but its long difficulty curve is due to the time it takes to master controlling your car. Since you're just bouncing a ball in a goal, there's nothing mysterious about what to do, but learning to do it well takes forever.
well those are my opinions anyway. :)

1:56 PM
makes sense for some games I guess

Well, it certainly wouldn't make sense for an RPG. those games aren't about learning controls
Or Rez where you want the player to melt into the game
from Supersonice A.... (SARPBC) here's me playing
And here's one of the developers scoring an amazing goal:
(viewed from 3 angles)
the game is simple and accessible, but possesses long-term depth due to its control scheme and physics realization.

mad max meets footbal
looks good

yeah it's really fun
no advertizing, PSN exclusive, paid for its development and several extra maps
came out 2008, still people playing it online
it's my pick for best game of the year 2008. and I know GTA IV came out that year. :)
the single player campaign is 20 challenges that bring you through the complexities of the controls and physics
very well-designed
also:
it's not the game it was meant to be

why would GTA IV be GOTY

production values

2:03 PM
I liked it but hardly liked it like a GOTY material

acting, story, animation, technology
usual shit the press likes
the guys who made SARPBC made Unreal 2004's Onslaught mode.
they are making a game where you had cars with weapons and tried to shoot each other out of hte arena for points
they were almost done
and made a mini-game called SocCar. They realized it was the real game, and dropped the other one.
looking at the pre-release dev vids before it even had a hud or a goal-score detector, you could see they loved to play and it was fun as hell already.
that is my ultimate quest in game-making: the super fun game that's fun BEFORE it's polished.

I think that's more of case for sandbox games; being "fun" with just mechanics.
*and action games.

certainly not the case for anything focusing on a story

E.Y.E. was a good example of a fun but unpolished game
technically, it didn't even have an ending lol
I mean it was intended to be an infinite loop of a story
but nobody mentioned that in the game
and the end would just be you starting again, without any explanation

heh

Jon
2:16 PM
That's because you didn't play it with developer commentary on.

not sure that would make it more polished
it's like wiki-ing for the ending's meaning but instead of using the browser you use the game
"oh hey, we didn't add a proper ending, but here, listen to us while we explain it"
also developer commentaries ruin immersion

2:27 PM
@ShotgunNinja neat!

1 hour later…
3:30 PM
ok wtf. got a namespace, Pandem. In it, is Pandem::MAX_PLAYER_NAME_LENGTH.
this is referenced in some files, and works.
in another file, it says it's undefined
further down the file is:
Pandem::Role::Enum TeamSlotRole(int index) { return teamSlotRole[index]; }
so Pandem:: seems to be available...
hmm
maybe it's defined in a part that's not included here.
ah that's it :)

user4704
4:22 PM
;)

Jon
I had a dream last night, about zombies. If they drank Pine Sol they were cured.
So weird. I looked up a bottle today, and it says in the front "Disinfects"

user4704
Did you try it yourself?

Jon
My brain is really weird.
I haven't tried it.. but if I were to turn into a zombie it would be worth a shot

hey
Is @JoshPetrie being aggressive in closing the questions : )

user4704
What do you think I was too aggressive with?

4:35 PM
maybe I chose the word poorly.
Yes I agree, all you closed are poor questions. But some could be edited or given a chance to be clarified

user4704
I didn't delete them.

user4704
I only closed them (put them on hold). Precisely so they can be edited or clarified.

why not?!?
EXTERMINATE
;)

user4704
That's why the "on hold" update to the site software existed.

that was a good idea, whoever had it

4:39 PM
ya, you are right

@Almo and then david tennant appeared as the new doktor

@Almo EXPLAIN!

:D

user4704
The problem with leaving those questions open and letting them be edited/clarified is that people will still post answers even if the question is totally inappropriate to the site.

the pedantic Daleks

user4704
4:40 PM
Then, when the question is finally edited, those answers are now invalid.

EXPLAININATE!

Jon
Not enough XP.

@Almo WE are the PEDANTIKS

heh

user4704
This hurts the usability of the site for future visitors and also tends to result in a loss of reputation for the users who answered (even though they shouldn't have, they did it in good faith) when late users come along weeks later, see the BS answer and go "wtf, this is a bad answer it doesn't even address the issue."

user4704
4:41 PM
I check the reopen queue and the comments of most questions I close unilaterally like that to see if the requisite follow-up has been given.

Politics.

I don't believe this was opinion based gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/68817/…
eventhough most people might not agree with me

user4704
You're probably right, but it was still too broad.

yes I agree with being too broad

@ChristianCarega Legrande is an in house CLI I'm building to interface with bitbucket, and later on github. Still working on v1

user4704
4:44 PM
I tried to re-open and re-close it but it's giving me an error.

4:57 PM
; - ; if its a mod tool I cant help
UNLESS I become your sidekick
and I get to close questions
and give myself free rep
on the daily.
@AlexM. What happened to the avatar

I changed it yesterday but in the end I didn't like it
and had to switch to this one until I find a new one
otherwise my balance will be off

let me pick
Requirements: Must be animu

as expected of grey kohai
in the meantime, beautiful indie game soundtrack drop

that's ugly and deformed

5:04 PM
ehuhue
@AlexM. Orichimaru avatar.

also this one

user4704
@Grey You can vote to close questions if you get enough reputation.

Its happening.
VIVA LE REVOLUTION.
@JoshPetrie Good to know. One day. I shall get more rep. One day.
@AlexM. Found ur avatar

I'm starting to think ASM is beyond my skills. :(

why so?

5:16 PM
I can't get it to do what I need.
I'm close I think. But it's still not quite right.

Jon
lol... haven't done ASM in like 10 years.

just practice more, it's not the easiest way to program

Jon
It is great if you are coding NES games, or integrated circuits.
But if you are making a game, you are crazy.

Well, doing it inside some other process isn't making it easier. :P

actually, once you get to know it, it sort of is the easiest way to program

5:17 PM
make pong with asm

because there are so few things you can do
and it's all about combining it all
it's just that combining them takes forever

rage

@AlexM. it's not the fastest though

:((

I'm too slow :(

5:18 PM
@Lasse yeah, mentioned it too :D

Jon
I wrote tictactoe with AI in ASM
I still have the source somewhere.
320x200x256 with mouse support :)

I made my first game with qbasic

Jon
Mine was Java i think.
Chess game

it was about managing exhibition dog
first you pushed up the beauty stat of the dog and then went to exhibition and won some prize and then pushed the stat up again
with the prize money

Jon
lol.

5:22 PM
then I made second part of the game, which had nice PCX graphcis and it worked on windows. Did it with darkbasic

Jon
pics or it never happened.

lol it's like 15 years
the distribution exe got infected by virus at some point too

run it on your PC
or it never happened

the game mechanics didn't change at all
I don't think it would run on linux, even with wine

@Jon GizMo Chess?
Or like a gizzard
and chess

Jon
5:24 PM
Gizmo Chess.

"Giz.moo.chess"

Jon
I owned GizmoCoder.com back then.
found my tictactoe game.. hehehe
pure ASM

nice

you also need a DX11 capable gpu for that

@AlexM. :-(
next gen 2d

5:28 PM
that looks like it would at some point say "to win you must not play" or something, I don't remember the quote

Jon
Make him play tic tac toe against himself! Just do it!!!
Computer: "I cannot win. The best move is to not play"

That's it

user4704
"The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?"

user4704
It's from War Games.

user4704
When Joshua plays Global Thermonuclear War.

Jon
5:30 PM
Thermonuclear war

I didn't remember the name of the movie, otherwise I would have googled up the quote

user4704
Great film. Had a terrible-looking sequel that I have not watched.

Jon
Ever watch D.A.R.Y.L?

user4704
Not that I recall.

Jon
"Daryl" (an acronym for "Data-Analysing Robot Youth Lifeform")
He was the ultimate gamer

5:34 PM
lol

user4704
The Wizard is the best movie ever.

Jon
Another great one is "The Last Starfighter"
The best gamers are recruited to fight real life aliens in space.
The Wizard was a extra long Nintendo Commercial

If you ever get really bored, this page is the best direction to amusement: imdb.com/chart/bottom

Jon
lol

user4704
5:47 PM
@Jon Yes. And yes about the Wizard too. It's still awesome.

Jon
yes, it was :) Lucas, the baddass and his powerglove.

user4704
I want to be him for a Halloween party one year.
