12:00 AM
you guys have given me a good idea

What are you going to make?

a sharp object that could end my life instantly

because i want to program in Java but my college classes right now are based on c++
and it is a bad idea to learn a different language than the one you're being tested on
so, should i start with metal or wood?

@Hellovart Say "screw it", and program it in assembly. Then you'll probably want a Katana instead.

12:04 AM
the art of programming has very little to do with syntax.

i know
it has to do with my programs running without errors

I know
C++ is like

sigh

what?

error that makes no sense at __std__thisjobsucks.cpp
aoeutahoenuhaeohua
eouaoe
aoei.p
line 5

12:06 AM
like, I don't understand, when I code something and i press the little green arrow on top, it should run and do what i want it to do

as long as language A has the same paradigm as language B. you should be able to jump between them reasonably easily.

the only thing that is similar is the basics

Be happy that you don't use punch cards.

between java and c++?
you can write c++ that looks a lot like java if you wish.

but i want to work with graphics

12:07 AM
I actually prefer C++ for some things TBH though

in java i can create everything on one form

Like being frustrated
Pounding my head
Yelling

well, thats not so much a java thing, as a swing thing.

^_ all easier in C++

and you can do the same thing if you really want to, via mixing in c++/cli but thats a bit crappy
if you need to work with windows, use c#

12:09 AM
++

i put c# away after i finished learning it in high school!
trying going from c# to C
what a pain

I don't that I'm going to touch C#

@Hellovart heh, yeah. C++ isn't as straight forward as C#

wont OOP in C++ be a big pain comparing it to java or c#

Mainly because it's microsoft only

12:11 AM
what an odd concept.
i dont get the ms hate

MS is greedy, that is where the hate comes from

maybe in the mid 90's
that was 20 years ago though.

I don't want my code to run on Winders only.

you've obviously never tried to write cross platform code
because that is hilariously fun

@AidanMueller You can use Mono these days

12:12 AM
and ill take the tools on windows all day every day

Morning

mono's a good option :)

compiling c++ code in linux is a bitch too

debugging via gdb is worse

You do realize that they created DirectX(box) for the sole purpose of having microsoft only games, right?

12:13 AM
didnt they create XNA for indie game developers?

actually, they bought the DirectX technology

I know I can use Mono, but that's not the point.

from a smaller company, at the time the whole concept of "graphics" was a new thing. previously you only had what was known as windows GDI, which was pretty hideous and only provided 2D acceleration
this was a long time before an X box came about.

The point is that programming languages should be free to use, and cross platform.
It's not about cross platform

that is why Java is more popular

12:15 AM
Yeah... I was using GDI for games right up until GDI--. Wow that was awful

It's about their policies
I used to like micro$oft

java's not really cross platform either. its write once test everywhere
4

hahah, yes

But their policies are starting to annoy me.

as for ms, you get free tools with good compilers, and great debuggers

12:16 AM
horseshit!

and you can happily write ansi c++ within them

and who thought intellisense was a good idea!

I like my MinGW

intellisense is fantastic for c#, for c++ you really need visual assist

yes, i remember intellisense being good for c#

12:17 AM
visual assist is amazeballs
anyway, you dont know pain until you've had to code c++ using dosedit
and/or xcode
they're equally bad

Microsoft compilers don't let you compile to Linux.
May not seem like a big market
BUT
Steambox is linux

which is why you take the source files and headers and move it over to a linux platform....
and then pray to god that the fucking libraries are supported

Yeah, what's the use of compiling to Linux if you can't run and test it right away, on Linux? (Pretty much nothing Microsoft will run on Linux)

try telling that to my professors

What you do is you program on Linux, and test windows compilations with wine

12:23 AM
So, they'd like to compile to Linux on a Windows machine? Then... access the binaries from Linux and run them outside the debugger?
Seems like your profs want Visual Studio to run on Linux

lol

hmm looks like my message didnt get star'd for long

What did it say?

Was it a "dumb star"?

encase people were looking for work in game industry - star citizen just opened alot of job applications for a number places in usa and uk

12:25 AM
Hello, a quick question regarding openGL and Java2D's Graphics object : To change the overarcing coordinate system in gl, you just call glOrtho(...) - is there a way to change that coordinate system by calling a method of that graphics object ?

becoming a game developer seems a lot more challenging then that of becoming a software developer

as an (ex) gamedev.
its very similar in a lot of cases

@AidanMueller da feck

In this case, job applications

12:27 AM
im talking about 3d stuffz

physicz

Sounds like you can/should ask a question

@Hellovart yes. im an ex professional gamedev. i've been there, done that, have the tshirts

who did you work for

12:27 AM
@AidanMueller heh, yeah, I always think of that too

@Hellovart in reality, its not really that different. you're really taking data in one form, and turning into data in another form.
@Hellovart criterion/sega/thq/krome

just say burn out :P

haha
:)

that's a lot of companies, @MattD
good thing you were out of thq though
hahhaahahahaha

yes, i did it for a long time, about 7 years. half my IT career, before that i was in telco billing
and now im in web.

12:29 AM
wow
what a stretch

some one here worked on mighty quest for epic loot prototype

awesome

never heard of that

might of been todders
@Hellovart its made by ubisoft its in beta atm

i did hear about the burnout games and man did they "burn out"

12:31 AM
burnout paradise was the best

racing games in general are generic and boring

@Dave Pretty sure Todders has been waist-deep in SharePoint for many years

laughs. you're welcome to your opinion ;) but i still like them

if there's any company i want to work for, it's Bioware

@JohnMcDonald no one needs to be waste deep in sharepoint

12:32 AM
but i don't think ill be heading into the game development industry

@ToddersLegrande was it you who worked on the mighty quest of epic loot original prototype
who ever it was - was telling me, that originally you would storm castles with creatures
rather than the other way round in which they chose to do it

Racers aren't boring like the game I'm going to make "it's going to be a racer, a shooter, and an MMO all in one"

you storm creatures with castles?
that sounds like a fun idea :)

@MattD no you use them to defend your own and attack castles on your own

Oi

12:34 AM
@hasherr go home

I am home.

nuqneH

Good job.

in other words, tower defence

Are you?

12:34 AM
@Hellovart yeah basically
@hasherr might be in one of them

Nice.

my home is a dusty cold basement ground with a bunch of paper towels spread out onto it
oh and this laptop

I a bit frustrated with gimp's unintuitive-ness

heh, yup

gimp's functional, but hard to use
there's a better cut down one around for the mac atm
although i dont remember what its called

12:36 AM
Use Paint.net if you're needs are simple, and you're on Windows

photoshop.
the free version

Each layer can have it's own size independent from the images size?!?!?!?

Lol, I don't use Gimp, I use PAINT.NET
Which is a paint program, not an image editor, but it's a damn good tool

@AidanMueller hah, awesome. Could be useful

i use photoshop

12:37 AM
so, @MattD what did you do to get fired from all those companies?

I use a combination of both

with a bamboo wacom pen tablet

(paint.net and gimp)

@Hellovart i was never fired. i either resigned because i was unhappy for various reasons. or i was laid off

@MattD imma guess the first one
game dev is stressful

12:38 AM
because of the deadlines?

@JohnMcDonald Yes, but when you resize the image, the layers stay the same size. Totally un-intuitive

@Hellovart yup

Oh fun

isnt it the same with software development companies?

@Hellovart these are things i'll discuss with people over a beer sometime, but not in a public chat room

12:38 AM
you don't have to tell me personal stuff

@Hellovart depends - but usually yes... companies should bid on projects with realistic deadlines though

i mean the ones who get laid off are clearly the ones who were doing the least spectacular work

not really
some of the best cost mega $$$

sigh Do I really need to make a loading screen? :( My game loads in ~10 seconds now

once u finish the project u may not need them

12:40 AM
which is why you blackmail

@JohnMcDonald just have it say "if you can read this your PC sucks"
@Hellovart lol what?
blackmail yeah that wont get u far =/

ok, back to work time

@Dave heh, Are you telling me that my PC sux?

@JohnMcDonald depends on the game
but over time people wont be able to read it :P

12:42 AM
what is it anyway

For all of you paint.net users: I found a plugin called "that other app" it let's you open a layer in a different program, edit it, and import the changes without closing paint.net. Super useful if there is a feature in gimp that works better or isn't in paint.net

@Dave My game, Asteroid Outpost

Like "make seamless"

oh that one hows it that been going
aint seen any screenshots in ages

does it have blue aliens that shoot lasers out of their eyes? @JohnMcDonald

12:43 AM
What are you writing it in?
Frustration++?

i have a horrid invisible wall collision issue for my grid system
i dont see any solution other than pixel level detection to make sure its not alpha but its guna hurt the game's performance alot

i once made a 2d platformer in C# windows form

have you done any grid based collision detection ?

and then i stabbed the guy sitting next to me in class with a pencil because i found a game breaking bug
i used maths, dave

12:45 AM
maths

Never again.
@Hellovart I wrote a maze game in a C# windows form

My first "real" game was writt-WOW THAT IS AWESOME

@Hellovart we all use maths.

lol

@JohnMcDonald Looks really good.

12:45 AM
@JohnMcDonald webGL ?

C# (XNA), with Awesomium Web UI (jQuery, AngularJS, CSS3, etc)

Did you make that background by yourself?

ew, XNA

@JohnMcDonald see if you can port it to browser :D that be awesome

try making it in Java

12:46 AM
I made the BG myself, and it probably won't last

@JohnMcDonald you're using awesomium? how's that going?

@JohnMcDonald The bg looks very FTL-like.

why does the background image looks lesser in quality compared to the other sprites

@JohnMcDonald why not use NASA's high resolution images they are public domain by default free for use in any situation :)

@MattD So far, Awesomium is pretty great. My only concern is portability

12:47 AM
the resolutions can cover the entire screen by far

^Reminds me of that.

@JohnMcDonald interesting. I really think that CSS/Web style stuff is the future of ui

@Hellovart Probably because I made it, and it's stretched, :p

@JohnMcDonald only question really is how to make it animate :)

Is mono one of those things that works sometimes, or is it pretty good?

12:47 AM
@MattD Oh man, it's soooo much easier than making any other kind of UI

mono is decent
and getting better all the tiem

I'm not using Mono (yet)

unlike my spelling

LOL
my speling is prity gud

what do i need to do in order to take over bill gate's position

12:50 AM
what position? he has a seat on the board but spends most of his time doing charity work

He sold microsoft didn't he?

with the money he steals from people!

Or something like that

no, he just stepped down from being CEO

Oh
I see

12:50 AM
ballamer took over, and now he's stepping down
and they're going to appoint a new CEO this year

Oh dear
And now it's too late to change Winders back to the way it was

like I dunt understund, why doesnt anyone want to buy my program that allows you to type your name and output it spelt backwards, i dudn't do anything wrongs!
there's only a $20 price tag on it

People don't know good deals when they see them.

for reals! like, the negatives on my bank statement are going away anytime soon

One for the price of two, selling like hot cakes.

12:57 AM
i cant bake cakes
but i can make toast?
and why the fuck doesnt my meal look like this when i buy it at my local mcdonalds: mcdonalds.ca/ca/en/menu/full_menu/breakfast/…

Cheapskates

there's a lot of money in styling "food" for photoshoots.
