1:00 PM
Maybe.

user19161
@GraceNote That can mean your birthday is in Sep.

@KitΘδς :D those would be the most uncomfortable weeks of you life! I think I was a couple of weeks overdue

@JasperLoy A most logical conclusion

my poor mum

user19161
@MattEllenД Better than waiting 6 to 8 weeks.

1:01 PM
12 hours of labor for my mom

user19161
@GraceNote Indeed, I am very logical, though also very emotional, so they fight with each other.

My life was supposed to start in September, on my cousin's birthday. Instead it started in July, on my cousin's sister's birthday.

@JasperLoy Emotion and logic can very well work in harmony, though.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 So too early, I presume?

user19161
@GraceNote That is deep. I am glad they work well together for you.

1:02 PM
Isn't that still your cousin?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Wow. That is really interesting.

@Cerberus Yeah, a couple months early. Which I never really thought about until I was a parent, and I realized how much those first few months must have scared my parents
@simchona Yeah, but a different cousin :)

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well, as long as you turned out all right!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah, no kidding. Especially when you were a baby that would have been very premature.
That sounded funny.

@Cerberus As long as I maintain the illusion that I turned out all right (twitch)

user19161
1:03 PM
@kit How is thy project coming along?

@JasperLoy It's not.

@KitΘδς I was like, 4 pounds, when I was born.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 cowers wide-eyedly in a corner
4!?

user19161
@KitΘδς Huh? Why is everyone so cryptic?

4 is not a lot.
I was 10, I think.

1:04 PM
@JasperLoy Did you just learn that word? Because you have been using it a lot today.
@Cerberus Holy crap!

@Cerberus No, it's pretty small.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Holy crap!

user19161
@KitΘδς No, I learnt it quite long ago.

@KitΘδς Apparently I had no bum when I was born. I've since made up for that.

@KitΘδς Shut up!

1:05 PM
@Cerberus No, you shut up!

I was about the same as MrShiny weight-wise, born 3 months early.

@JasperLoy Kit weren't being no cryptic - Her project just isn't coming along.

NOU

@Cerberus :P

@Mana THREE MONTHS! yikes. thank gods for modern medicine!

1:06 PM
heh
this was 20 years ago

@Cerberus I've actually birthed children. I can say Holy Crap! to a 10 pounder.

so not really modern anymore is it? :P

@Mana Impressive.

@Mana still pretty modern.

@KitΘδς Right, I will let it pass this time.

1:07 PM
I know. I was just poking fun at how fast technology becomes obsolete.

100 years ago they wouldn't have had incubators and we both probably would have died.

user19161
@Cerberus I was 8.

Nice.

I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Perhaps then humans had better immunity.

user19161
1:08 PM
@simchona Only standard English here!

@simchona well, I have some books...

@MattEllenД I don't care for your fancy book learnin'. Best way to learn is by doin'.

user19161
@mana Did you turn from red to blue overnight?

@KitΘδς Being that I is a boy how's it that I can be learning by doing?

morning, everyone

1:09 PM
@jasper it's a poor reference to "Gone with the Wind"

@JasperLoy It was around 9:00 PM yesterday I believe

morning @JSBngs

that my icon turned blue anyways

@JSBᾶngs Hola!

@MattEllenД well, you could always try just attending a birth. it's about as close as you're gonna get

1:09 PM
@MattEllenД Well, that's not really my problem, is it? :P

user19161
@Mana Let me know if you need any help. Don't fall sick!

@JasperLoy immunity probably wouldn't help premature babies.

@JSBᾶngs I was at my own, does that count?

user19161
Why is my browser not giving the ping sound? Is it Java?

@MattEllenД No.

1:10 PM
@JasperLoy Have you muted it?

@MattEllenД i dunno. did you take pictures?

@KitΘδς I don't know. I'm not sure if complaining about something makes it your problem

user19161
@KitΘδς No, I just installed Debian 6, and dear Cerb thought it was a person.

@JSBᾶngs no...

@MattEllenД Seahorse mutation.

1:11 PM
@GraceNote Right! Or that frog transgender thing that they do.

@GraceNote I'm not turning into a seahorse just so I can experience giving birth. Plus I'd be giving birth to seahorses!

That too

user19161
Is Caesarean supposed to be painless?

that would be weird

@JasperLoy No, it's surgery.

1:12 PM
@MattEllenД Nay, you need only carry the egg, you aren't responsible for its spawning, to my understanding.

But they apply anaesthetic.

Well, you are in the one respect, but nothing stops you from getting the mutation after the egg is fertilized.

@Matt but they're so cute

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 So I guess that makes it painless, sort of.

@GraceNote I see, then it won't help at all!
I'm definitely not turning into a seahorse now

1:13 PM
@JasperLoy Until it wears off, I suppose.
@MattEllenД Wait until you're near water. It might be important.

i don't think than anything about childbirth is really painless

user19161
Also my browser is forever transferring info from gravatar, really don't know why.

you can be drugged up for the worst of it, but there's always the aftermath

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Usually.

@simchona unlike their pipefish cousins

1:14 PM
@JasperLoy Try a hard refresh

@JSBᾶngs My birthings weren't painful.

@KitΘδς For a C-section? wouldn't they pretty much always apply at least a local anaesthetic?

@JSBᾶngs — All I can say is this: if men had to give birth, the human race would die out.

@KitΘδς at all? you weren't even sore afterwards? i find that hard to believe

user19161
@Robusto I think women are stronger than men in almost every way.

1:15 PM
@JSBᾶngs Sore like I'd ridden a horse, yes. And I tore a little the first time. But painful is not how I'd describe the experience.

user19161
After all, women have two more letters.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well, probably. I'm thinking of the women I knew who had emergency C-sections.

@Robusto I'd be happy to give birth. It's looking after a puking, crapping, screaming thing 24hrs a day that scares me.

@JSBᾶngs It depends on the circumstances. Sometimes it is extremely painful as usually depicted, but somehow, sometimes it's (relatively) painless.

user19161
It's scary to give birth at 8 months.

1:16 PM
@JasperLoy ?

user19161
@KitΘδς I mean the baby is usually underdeveloped.

user19161
@GraceNote Like injections.

@GraceNote am i to infer from this that you've had a baby? or are you speaking of what you've heard from others?

user19161
@KitΘδς And now we have a sentence with no words, the shortest in the language.

@JSBᾶngs I'm 23! Good heavens!

user19161
1:18 PM
@GraceNote There are 10 year olds who give birth.

@GraceNote I know 12 year olds that had babies.

@GraceNote my mom had two kids by the time she was 23.

@GraceNote so you had several?

@GraceNote Does that mean you're too old, or too young, to have had children, or learned from others? :p

user19161
@GraceNote Grace revealeth thy age!

1:18 PM
(But in seriosity, I have a mother and I know other mothers, so it's the kind of thing that gets passed around now and then. Especially when you watch those TV shows that tend to overexaggerate.

pffffft

@JasperLoy Thine.

@JasperLoy gah! english fail! kill it!

@JasperLoy My age has been in the public transcript for months.

user19161
@KitΘδς Sorry, I was trying to sound smart.

1:19 PM
@GraceNote Yeah but that was your age THEN.

Also, um... huh. That was neither the volume, nor the direction, of response I was expecting.

user19161
@GraceNote I see, which I am too lazy to read all of.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hasn't changed since then, as it were.

@GraceNote Well, just look where you are :p

It probably would've been smoother if I had just said "I've never been in any sort of romantic relationship".

1:21 PM
woohoo! i just got a new gold badge on SO!

@JSBᾶngs Yay!

user19161
@GraceNote Same.

@GraceNote strictly speaking, this still does not preclude you from having given birth

@JasperLoy the th goes where we put an s iirc

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Congrats, but no need to treat us.

1:22 PM
@JSBᾶngs True. But I imagine that in that case, I wouldn't even bring it up.

user19161
@z7sgѪ Hello dear unicorn!

@GraceNote true. here endeth the discussion of ways that Grace could possibly have already had children

user19161
@GraceNote Very true.

user19161
@JSBᾶngs No copying me.

@JasperLoy mine was in first.

1:23 PM
@JasperLoy hello!

and you didn't say "jinx'

user19161
@JSBᾶngs I mean the verb-eth.

user19161
But maybe you meant that.

@JasperLoy ah, well, but mine was grammatical

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Ya, ya.

user19161
1:24 PM
The KJV tried to copy me too.

but you slapped that bitch back into line?

user19161
I think my browser problem could be due to SE not supporting FF3.5 too well. Debian software is ancient.

!!
3.5? debian needs to catch up

You cannot upgrade it?

user19161
@MattEllenД It is usually 2 years behind.

1:26 PM
@MattEllenД I love it when you talk that way.

user19161
@Cerberus I can using two methods. I might soon.

OK.

Gah. Today is fruit salad day, the absolute worst of all salad days.

@KitΘδς that why you ma favourite ho

Fruit salad!? I hate those.

1:27 PM
salad days... hmmmm

@MattEllenД :O :P ;) :)

I can't imagine why people would ever buy or make that.

@KitΘδς nasty. fruits are delicious, but they shouldn't be chopped up and dropped together in a bowl with nasty sugar water

Unless it is extremely fresh and contains just the right fruits.

@MattEllenД I keep hearing that "Debian is Ubuntu for grown-ups" or some other similar nonsense.

1:28 PM
@MattEllenД Matt gets it! Matt gets it!

user19161
@Cerberus I prefer KFC veg salad to coleslaw but the former is discontinued here.

oh good!

I made salad for lunch today!

I have never ordered a salad at a food chain...

Has everyone been practicing their bellicophagery?

user19161
1:28 PM
@z7sgѪ Actually both are of about the same difficulty level.

War-eating?

I think I shall get a regular salad today, depending on the soup selection.

user19161
@Cerberus ordered

@Cerberus exactly

@Cerberus Did you miss that entire exchange?

1:29 PM
@KitΘδς Apparently so!

I missed it

@JasperLoy Some sort of nerdy snobbery I think.. can't be having that!

@Grace @Cerb look in the transcript for Kit threatening to masticate pea-pods
i believe that "mighty mastications" was the key phrase

Ehh I think I know enough, now.

Oh. Is that why @Matt waged war on his chicken the other day as well?

1:31 PM
Starts here ish:
Aug 18 at 15:15, by KitΘδς
Hello, salad. I will be the person to eat you today.

@GraceNote it is

user19161
Mighty mastication sounds like mighty mast***ation.

Ahha

@JasperLoy this, surprisingly, had nothing to do with it

Aug 18 at 15:17, by KitΘδς
O salad, I smite thee with my teeth! Your pea pods cannot stand against my mighty mastications!

1:31 PM
@JasperLoy You missed some important letters from that word.

Aug 18 at 15:20, by KitΘδς
Woe to the broccoli, your savory green florets will fall beneath the juggernaut of my jaw.

user19161
@z7sgѪ I am trying to be extra careful after recent events.

Aug 18 at 16:19, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
So, penne with meatballs. We meet again. Twice before you have faced me, and I have mercilessly defeated you. This time you don't even have your hot-pepper defense system! You shall fall beneath the tines of my fork!

@z7sgѪ it's the act of mast****ing. you've not heard? it's the latest thing

Aug 18 at 16:29, by Matt Ellen Д
Dear Noodles, it has come to light that you have not been paying rent for the last few days. As per the terms of our agreement, if I have not received rent payment in 10 minutes then I shall plunge you into boiling water. Yours, Matt.

user19161
1:33 PM
penne with meatballs sounds like pen** with balls.

@Kit: Don't forget to bite our enemies...

Matt, of course, is very polite to his food. He's British, after all.

wot wot

@JasperLoy penne siciliana, mmm tasty

@MattEllenД You a rabbit, wot?

user19161
1:34 PM
FL&U public beta is up, please join if interested.

@KitΘδς There's a joke about British food not deserving politeness somewhere in there...

@GraceNote I don't think so...

@JasperLoy FLU? i don't want the flu

user19161
I heard the British only eat fish and chips.

@JasperLoy and roast beef

1:35 PM
@JSBᾶngs Hey, flu is still better than J.Lo.

and Yorkshire Pudding

And Robusto is registered with the latter.

mmmmm Yorkshire Pudding

@RegDwightѬſ道 Ain't that the truth?

@RegDwightѬſ道 i'm sorry, but what's JLo? in se terms...

user19161
1:35 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Who is J.Lo.?

Jennifer Lopez?

I love fish & chips.

@MattEllenД Or maybe me.

Japanese Language and offal

user19161
1:36 PM
While Americans only eat burgers.

@Matt: Is "builder's fish and chips" at all a known phrase?

I particularly liked how the bellicophagery conversation morphed into a pirate conversation, then pastafarian, then more pirates, then back to bellicophagery.

@Cerberus I am a big fan too
@Cerberus It rings a bell

@MattEllenД Good!

I'm not sure why

user19161
1:37 PM
@KitΘδς It is a periodic function.

@MattEllenД OK.

today i'm going to stain my plate red with the blood of my flank steak

user19161
@MattEllenД Not good when shit hits you.

and i will take no pity on the lamentations of the asparagus

This is a cooking show, about the "architect's fish and chips". It is a parody, as you might have guessed.
Notice the voice-over at the end is Patsy's.

user19161
1:38 PM
@Cerberus I thought that was you and your wife.

@JasperLoy indeed, I have to take a shower, and I'm always finding bits in my hair

@JasperLoy Hey I'm not that old!

user19161
@MattEllenД And ginger beard.

that too

user19161
@Cerberus Maybe you are the woman?

user19161
1:40 PM
Matt's ginger bread got into his ginger beard.

user19161
I watched quite a bit of Rachel Ray and Martha Stewart cooking.

@JasperLoy both of those annoy me, actually

user19161
I think the Americans like If Yan Can Cook So Can You!

i like Iron Chef

I like my own kitchen.

user19161
1:42 PM
I like Hell's Kitchen.

@JasperLoy me too!
hey, is anyone else here a fan of Whites on the BBC?

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Do you know Little Gordon?

@JSBᾶngs Hain't seen it.

I don't get BBC

@KitΘδς @Grace it's on hulu
that's where we watch it
(of course Grace might not get hulu in her country)

1:43 PM
I'm in the US

@GraceNote hah, sorry. i thought you actually lived in taiwan

Sometimes, just not right now

user19161

user19161

ah, the young Jasper cooking!

user19161

user19161
Very funny imitation of big Gordon.

Gah, another question that was fine but then got multicollidered and started collecting crap.
39
Q: What do you call a disk with a hole in the middle?

FilletCompact Discs, washers and Aerobie frisbees are all disks with a hole in the middle. Is there a word (either mathematical or not) to describe this shape? I mean the specific case of a round hole in a flat disk such that the inner and outer rings are concentric circles, like below.

MultiCollider needs to die. There, I said it.
3

well said

user19161
@reg You slept very late last night!

3
A: What do you call a disk with a hole in the middle?

FilletThe question is unclear about whether a 2-Dimensional shape is wanted, or a 3-Dimensional object which is flat, but has a finite thickness. The examples were all 3-Dimensional, but the drawings were 2-Dimensional. Like rajah9 says, if you stack up enough washers or CDs, you will get a big tower...

1:46 PM
@JasperLoy Stop stalking me.

He answered his own question.

Haha. Pure gold.
"The question is unclear."
I was busy deleting answers by someone else, hadn't even noticed this one.

user19161
I noticed by the time a question has the fifth or sixth answer, the answer will usually be ignored.

@JasperLoy this is true across the SE network

TL;DR.

1:51 PM
if a question has more than 3 answers, i will never answer it unless all of the existing answers are actually wrong

user19161
By the way do watch the Little Gordon videos, they are very funny if you have seen big Gordon. You can laugh till you die.

that sounds to funny for crows

user19161
2:42 PM
@matt I just emailed you.

@Kit, what's worse, working on a reasonable project with an unreasonable deadline, or working on unreasonable project with a comfy deadline?

F'x
hi all
not sure someone dropped the news already in there, so here goes:

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 They are the same actually. A project includes its content and deadline.

F'x
“French Language & Usage” is now in public beta phase

user19161
@Fx I beat you to that!

F'x
2:45 PM
feel free to drop by (even unannounced) for a quick question
@JasperLoy have you been on FL&U already? didn't see your name
about 20% of the questions are in English currently

@JasperLoy No, they're not the same. A deadline is a point in time at which a project is due.

Q: How did "coucou" (with its original "cuckoo" meaning) become a greeting in French?

JezSeveral times now, I have seen French people greet each other (via text chat) by saying "coucou". This appears to simply be derived from the word of the same spelling "coucou", describing the noise a cuckoo makes. I'm curious as to how this became a form of greeting. Does anybody know? Also, ...

user19161
@Fx I asked a newbie question: Free online resources for beginner course.

F'x
@JasperLoy good, that was you

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well you know what I mean.

Q: Terms describing Germans around the two World Wars — Differences and context?

ZootThe French language used a variety of terms to describe the Germans around the time of the two World Wars, such as “les boches”, which appears to come from “alboche”, which appears to have been derived from “allemand”. I've also found some other terms: Chleuh Doryphores Fritz (Frisés, Fridol...

@JasperLoy I'll check my mail

F'x
things like that

user19161
@MattEllenД No hurry, just told you in case you are the type to check once a year.

@JasperLoy I'd say you should know what I meant by my question. Don't try to out-pedant me! I can be more pedantic than a 3-year-old!

user19161
I check mine daily but usually receive none.

2:48 PM
@JasperLoy I am that type :D

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I even wanted to say P=(C,D) where P is project, C is content, D is deadline, so that P is an ordered pair mathematically.

user19161
@MattEllenД Really?

@JasperLoy unless I'm expecting mail into that account, I don't check it regularly
very few people know that address

user19161
@MattEllenД So I shuold ping you here when emailing you?

@JasperLoy probably!
no, definitely, yes

2:51 PM
@JasperLoy I don't think a project necessarily has a deadline at all.

user19161
@MattEllenД OK. I will use the email you provided and not the other one since that is the one you provided me. Let me know if I should change.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 OK.

@JasperLoy you can use either - mojo-the-waffle@excite.com is what I give out because I don't care if it gets spammed to hell. I still check it. The one you just emailed is one I keep for real people.

user19161
@MattEllenД OK it's just that it does not make sense to keep an account if you check it once a year. You never know who might mail you.

@JasperLoy oh, that was an exaggeration! I check it infrequently is what I meant
less than once a week

user19161
2:55 PM
@MattEllenД How about the other one?

@JasperLoy everyday
it's contradictory, I know. I just don't get many emails to my real address, 3 or 4 a month

user19161
@MattEllenД Well, I only have one, in line with my minimalist principles. And I get too few mails. :(

@JasperLoy most of my emails are from companies, I rarely get interesting ones

user19161
@MattEllenД I thought companies are important to you.

@JasperLoy depends on the company :D

user19161
2:58 PM
Anyway check it out when you are free and let me know what you think @matt. no hurry.

@JasperLoy I shall.
I'll email you when I'm back home

user19161
@MattEllenД OK. You might be surprised at the contents. :)
