Oh dear, Rhodri is gone this time, just noticed that his account has been deleted. He will be missed!

user19161
In other news, I just joined the FL site, and copied my question from GL there with modification, hehe.

Hi @chaos!

@aedia a virtual Doughnut for you! The saying does mean a lost messenger. there is interesting story about it which I will post it in few mooments.
@Jasper yo.

user19161
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū You should give her virtual kimchi instead.

@Jasper I am a kimchi fan, but your attraction to kimchi is just ridiculus.
or Ludicrius.

Ridiculous, ludicrous.

@Grace do you know how to show picture at a question I want to ask in meta? Like, show a picture at a question.
Like this:
Blah Blah Blah,
[IMG]
Blah Blah Blah.
Basically, I want to use a picture to help me ask a question.

12:50 AM
There's a button for that!

There's also Ctrl+G.

And markup, but I keep forgetting the syntax.
It's very similar to hyperlinks.
But the button just inserts that markup automatically.

....so, I copy the picture, then go to the quesiton page, and press Ctrl-G?

12:52 AM
![WARGH][WARGH1]
You upload through the utility when you press "Ctrl+G"

Nonononn....
I want to directly show a section in a page. like on a FAQ where they show a rep of the Eggs guy...
and also I want to know how to make red outline in the section to make my point.
like here:

1:07 AM
ANybody home?

That's just taking a screenshot, isn't it?

@grace yeah, I think so.
@Grace thanks.

user19161
1:41 AM
@chaos So I expect you will turn into Sonic on 911?

@jasper On 97.

user19161
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū OK, I look forward to it! Sonic sounds better and more descriptive!

7:25 AM
I think I have found the answer to what I have been pondering the last couple of days. Of course the answer might be wrong. In any case, neither the question nor the answer can be revealed.

7:57 AM
@JasperLoy Well, that's helpful

Good morning.

morning!

Playing your hand close to your chest, still, eh @Jasper?
hi @simchona :)
glad to see you're running on the correct time today ;)

I'm catering to authority

good good. Best to keep order, than to oppose The Way

8:10 AM
yes. I am learning

The subtlety of reg's "Yo mama" joke is that constant time means that the time taken is constant regardless of how many items there are. This doesn't mean it's fast, so it's not necessarily saying that yo mama's overweight.

@MattEllenД I lol'ed anyway

Jez
ah, the verb 'laugh' is dying

@simchona sorry, I didn't mean to kill the joke!

@MattEllenД It's ok. I just keep reading this one answer
trying to figure out what it says

A: How to explain accent variations to students

A.UysalThere is a same kind of problem again... there are lots of languages and lots of accents but one official language which is taught in schools. as it is said in Uk it is midland dialect and in America it is... If you are a teacher you should teach and use this official language..This will be accep...

Also:

A: "Are there any <plural noun>" vs. "is there any <singular noun>"

A.UysalWhen you use any with a countable noun in questions and negative answers you must use it in plural. Are there any books.....? if you want to use it in positive sentence you can make it both.. You can use any color with white.

8:26 AM
so many love dots!

What...why this person does this...god knows! :)

maybe they...start thinking about something...mid-sentence...and like to let us know.
I imagine talking to them would be very frustrating

Yes. What do you think of the "rule" they posted?

There isn't any such rule

That's what we've all been saying. Glad I'm not crazy

8:45 AM
Crazy? No. Crazy is when you think all the...pauses in your...thoughts...need to be punctuated on a Q&A site.

Jez
Hmm. Looks like they just struck the proposed San Fran circumcision ban off the ballot.
what's wrong with California?

Jez
it's sensible in many other ways

why would you want to ban circumcision?
it's a good thing

Jez
yet it still allows a barbaric 1000s-year-old tradition to be practiced. Why not full-on child sacrifice?
how/why is it a good thing?

8:46 AM
for men, it is, for women it's not
no.1 it means you don't get nasty gunky stuff building up under your foreskin
no.2 in adult males it significantly reduces the chance of transmission of AIDS

Jez
justification for mutilation of a child? hell no.

it's not mutilation
seriously

Jez
it is. seriously.

it can even be neccessary

Jez
sure, but we're talking about when it isn't. which is 99.99% of the time
it may be necessary to cut off a child's hand when it gets gangrene too

8:49 AM
I don't know why you think it's mutilation, but speaking from experience I did not feel mutilated.

Jez
well i think you're strange.

many people do

Jez
maybe you've learnt to deal with it, but i don't find it any more acceptable.
and many do feel mutilated.

I don't remember ever feeling like I had to deal with it (I was 5 at the time). Useless skin is useless. But I am a sample size of one. Have you seen the adulation they heap on boys in Turkey, just before they are circumcised? It's like all their Christmases come at once.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand this:
> Is there any rational reason for this or is it simply yet another example of arbitrary and inconsistent English grammar? wasnt it the question..I said it was different and found -s ????? oo I should have added that They thought on it and preferred this.. but I do not know why? so sorry..
0
A: Why does the 3rd-person of verbs that end in -y follow the rule for plural nouns instead of verbs?

A.UysalIn Early Modern English, some dialects distinguished the third person singular with the suffix -th; after consonants this was written -eth, and some consonants were doubled when this was added: run - runneth, suffice-sufficeth but now they changed this and however the suffix -s was chosen and it...

Jez
8:57 AM
@MattEllen I find it a relatively revolting cultural/religious practice.
the fact that they have to sing loudly and 'reward' the boys in other ways to make up for the crappy act they're about to perform says a lot.
that is, unless they do it to a newborn infant, which should be considered a bit like raping a newborn in the eyes of the law.

@Jez I doubt they see it as a reward for a crappy act, any more than a birthday is a reward for the punishment of ageing. It's a rite of passage. It is nothing like cutting off a limb, by the way, since it's useless skin.

Jez
if 'useless' means 'not useless at all' then yes, you're right

anyway, I can see we're just butting heads.

Jez
strange definitions you have

@Jez Really, it has a use for humans?

Jez
9:01 AM
sexual pleasure, and not getting potential medical problems from its being removed, seem like two

I never had a use for it my entire life. I still get a lot of pleasure from sex.

Jez
you never had a use for it? when did you get it removed?

when I was 5

Jez
hahahahaha!
well duh i wonder why you didn't have a use for it

it was for medical reasons

Jez
9:04 AM
it would be more justifiable to remove all children's appendix; it's more 'useless' than the foreskin

9:16 AM
@simchona It would suit this room - I can't make out exactly what it means. I'm guessing they mean that they've answered the question the best they can, but don't really know the answer.

When you have a chance, read the dialogue here
@Matt I see you entered the fray on the "plural verb" question
The user answered you back, btw.

I'm just going to upvote you. I'm not 100% sure what is being argued.

@MattEllenД Me neither. But it seemed somewhat right.

Gah. The argument continues. Will you help me extricate myself?

9:32 AM
@simchona which one?

@MattEllenД The plural/singular noun. I think I got out, now

@simchona yeah, looks like you're safe! :D

Hi Guys :)

hi Abid!

How are you ? @Matt

9:43 AM
I'm fine. Distracting myself from work, as always! how are you?

I'm good .
I am also distracting myself from work here.

@Matt, want to moderate the room with me and A.Uysal?
Could use a fairly unbiased set of eyes

@simchona If you like :)

Please. Maybe nothing will happen, but I don't want to snap unnecessarily.

aye
are you setting up the room?

9:50 AM
It should be up already
Looks like...they're not really there?
Sorry, Matt

@z7sg: (I hope you get this)--Thanks for being way more diplomatic than I was on the "lit/lighted" question.
Ah, you popped in @z7sg

yeah i sometimes sympathise with n00bz
also when they are wrong.

@z7sgѪ I forgot to write the "welcome to EL&U but..."

of course sometimes you can be as nice as pie, very gentle and diplomatic and people still take offence so i don't read too much into it if they do

10:03 AM
Do you think I was too harsh?

he was being a bit sarcastic from the beginning. but i think you can avoid that sometimes by posting up the general reference as a comment and explaining why

You're right, I should have done that.
> I did all this with a simple question. I did not want to ask a 250 word question that no one would read. A deep question does not have to be 250 words. By using thoughts instead of a candle in the example I accomplished what I had in mind. If you are not sure, ask before judging
So...I'm supposed to assume that a clear question has some hidden context. Got it.

if it is someone who has posted a string of annoying questions then by all means rip into them
don't worry about it, anyone with a low level of patience/tolerance wouldn't last long here anyway :)

so true

He's going to edit

10:11 AM
@sim AUysal is back if you want to discuss with him

I would hate to have that guy as my English teacher

yah
but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now

I just corrected an...English teacher?
I'm having trouble with benefit of the doubt here

10:32 AM
It's possible that he's just not a very good tutor.
Or finds typing to be an alien form of communication. I've seen that before

That's a good point. Maybe he can speak English fine, but translating thoughts into typed text is difficult
His answers are very much train of thought

I bought a Nook today

is that an e-book reader?
is it good?

It's so light and pretty
I really like it so far
It's the Barnes and Noble answer to a Kindle

10:41 AM
sounds good. I keep thinking about getting an e-book reader. I was pondering the open hardware one, um...

You can root a Nook Color to Android

Oh, maybe that's the one then. I can't seem to find whatever I was thinking of

There was also the recent frenzy for the HP Touchpad, but it's not technically an eReader

yeah :D that was humorous, the rush to buy something with an obsolete OS.
@sim: do you still want to argue the toss with A. Uysal?

Nope.

10:50 AM
well, let's say goodbye then! :)

My boyfriend bought one so he can resell it on eBay
I'm not really leaving. Just not arguing more tonight

Aye, I figured

That was fun. Thanks for being there

no worries, glad to help.

11:07 AM
I find it odd that A. Uysal claims to be an English teacher when his typed English is so bad. It's not out of the realms of possibility, I mean not every teacher is awesome, it's just odd that he's so adamant that he's right when confronted by native speakers
oh well.
I'm using he as a gender neutral pronoun

11:34 AM
@MattEllenД Shocking!
Many teachers of English in countries with bad education are of questionable quality.

user19161
Boo!

user19161
@cerb Did you get my message on the letter?

@JasperLoy Hi! Yes.
That was pretty clear.
But are you sure you know what you're doing...

user19161
@Cerberus Well, I am not doing anything, because I know not what is really going on.

user19161
Anyway I am on Debian 6 now. Hope it works well.

11:46 AM
@JasperLoy Very wise. No need for repetition..
I don't know who Debian is, but good luck!

user19161
@Cerberus Another Linux distro, the parent of Ubuntu.

Ah I see.
Happy with it so far?

user19161
@Cerberus Let's just say that she has been misleading me with various statements. Those statements seem to be beyond ordinary humour, so it seems that something is going on which is why I am puzzled.

@All: Hai

user19161
@SankarGanesh Hello.

11:51 AM
@JasperLoy How're you dude?

user19161
@cerb First there was one which confused me, so I thought it was meant with humour purely. Then there was another one a few hours later, OK nvm. Then there was a third one which was just too much to be just humour.

user19161
@SankarGanesh How are your poems coming along?

@JasperLoy I think you should let it rest.
Hi!

user19161
@Cerberus But I didn't start it, she started it!

@JasperLoy writing code is my profession and writing poem is an hobby , so i have to spend time on weekends , now i cannot say it 's going nicely , LOL,:)

11:54 AM
@JasperLoy Even so!

@Cerberus: Hi

user19161
@Cerberus I will let nature take its course and follow my heart at all times. Basically see how things go naturally.

OK.

user19161
@Cerberus If it was all purely for humour, I would say it is too much. Well, the only way to know is to ask explicitly.

@JasperLoy: what's your hobby dude

user19161
11:58 AM
@SankarGanesh Chatting with you!

@JasperLoy :)

user19161
Think I need to install Java. My pings are not sounding and chat is never finished loading.

@JasperLoy I advise against that. I see a repeating pattern.

user19161
@Cerberus So what should I do? Nothing, after three misleading statements?

user19161
Anyway, sorry to bore you with this, I hope your thesis is going well. I look forward to seeing it soon!

12:02 PM
@JasperLoy Yes. There is no possibility anyway, what with different continents.

user19161
@Cerberus Have you heard of the airplane?

Besides, I think these things should not be discussed in public.

user19161
@Cerberus OK then, lips sealed.

There are local sites with a different purpose.
OK.

Good revolvoing doors!

12:05 PM
Morning!

@Cerberus: and @JasperLoy: can i have your skype id

I pop out for lunch and the place gets interesting! Just my luck :D

@MattEllenД The other day I popped out for lunch and missed an earthquake. 2nd time that's happened to me.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 that sounds like good luck ;)

@SankarGanesh Sorry, no.
I've never been there when there was an EQ!

12:14 PM
@MattEllenД Well, in Toronto it was only a minor rumbling, so I would have liked to have heard it. But as it happens the ambient noise probably just drowned it out. I always miss the excitement.

@Cerberus ok no problem i m collecting information about Bermuda Triangle to share with my brother son who is 12 yrs old , if you knew any interesting about this , can you please share with me , Thanks

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Haha, I see. Well I'm glad we don't have any here.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Do you haz teh codez? Site not finsihd.

@SankarGanesh I believe Wikipedia is quite complete.

@Cerberus yes i m reading that, only

12:17 PM

@MrShinyandNew安宇 But do U haz teh codez?
It dont werk.

Q: What do you call a person who is always online on the Internet?

AbidIs there any specific word for it? I am just curious to know because staying online is like a profession nowadays.

user19161
You call him a slacker.

Thank you, @Reg (I assume you're the one who responded to my concerns)

user19161

Q: On the main site, why are some user names pink?

ChaosGamer ΕΛ-Υ ēel-ūI have noticed that on the main site, some of the usernames shows in pink, while others are in red. Here is an example: As you can see here, the users Simchona and FumbleFingers' names are in pink, while the username John Tobler is in bright red. Why is that?

@jasper or just not doing much else

user19161
Chaos is not the first one to ask this. Many people don't know it's just the browser recording visited links.

12:51 PM
@JasperLoy: what's your favorite movie ?

user19161
@SankarGanesh A beautiful mind. Have you watched it?

user19161
@simchona you mean the slacker?

Ooh, A Beautiful Mind. Been a while since I saw that

Great film.

@JasperLoy No , who's the director of the flim

12:53 PM
My personal favorite movie would be 12 Angry Men though.

I am now imagining 12 angry birds

@MattEllenД Oh, good, I'm not the only one who was thinking of that.

with a mind like mine, who needs enemies?
yay!

user19161
@MattEllenД Huh? Why is everyone so cryptic lately?

And a partridge in a pear tree.
(With an AK-47)

12:54 PM
today night i will download Beautiful mind and 12 Angry men and will let you guys tomorrow

@JasperLoy Angry Birds is the name of a popular game

user19161
A Beautiful Mind is a 2001 American drama film based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics. The film was directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The film stars Russell Crowe, along with Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Paul Bettany and Christopher Plummer. The story begins in the early years of a young prodigy named John Nash. Early in the film, Nash begins developing paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss an...

I imagine 12 Angry Birds would probably be kinda like Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"

user19161
@SankarGanesh See above.

@KitΘδς interesting mental image

12:55 PM
Except angrier.

@JasperLoy: Thanks , if you have time , pls see I m sam Movie

@GraceNote Exploding with anger.

@Jasper yup. 3I brought me up in the comments there. I'm just defending my high hours on the site: I don't have anything to do until next week

Quite, indeed, @Kit!

@simchona: Hai

12:56 PM
@GraceNote Guns don't kill people; people kill people. And so do Angry Birds if they have guns.

Pfft

chortle

Have you seen the Eddie Izzard monkeys with guns bit?

I can't recall that specific one

It's funnier if you know what I'm stealing it from.
BRB

user19161
12:57 PM
@simchona Back to school then?

@jasper yup. And lots of extracurriculars.

user19161
@GraceNote Well, I liked it a lot so I got the VCD.

I have a life. It just doesn't start until September.

Funny. My life didn't start until September, either.

12:59 PM
please wait 1 to 2 weeks for delivery

@ALL: I m leaving , Bye Please Take Care

Later, @Sankar

cya @SankarGanesh

@MattEllenД Good lord. I would have taken the drugs if I'd had to wait that long.

user19161
@simchona Maybe it never ended.
