@Cerberus howdy!

1:15 AM
@Cerberus Game over, man!

1:57 AM
Last night I was trying to find a dupe. I couldn't believe anyone hadn't answered What is the origin of the word "good"? before. I'm not good at advanced searches. The fewest number of answers I could get was about 264. So I answered the question, and not very well. If someone can give me some tips on advanced searches, it would be much appreciated.
Should this be asked in meta? Thanks.

2:11 AM
@Robusto Just one more game!

@medica You can click on the "Advanced Search Tips" link here, to find more info on it (if that's what you're looking for).
And also this link therein: english.stackexchange.com/help/searching
@Cerberus That's very impressive.
I'd play it if it didn't crash every time I switched tabs.

2:30 AM
Does it?
It doesn't crash for me!
@Alraxite Have you tried Chrome?

No
I think when I ran it yesterday it worked fine. But I didn't play for long.
But after that I tried some extensions after which my browser crashed.
So I removed them.
My browser still kept losing my tabs.
I disabled Classic Theme Restorer.
Now it works fine.
So probably because of that.

Odd.
Classic Theme Restorer works fine for me.

It will probably work find if I enable it again.
It's crashed a few times with some extensions.
But I just don't want to enable it since I don't really need it.
And I don't really think it's going to have an effect on whether unity crashes on me.

Hmm.
But that does mean there is some other extension that is making your browser less stable.

Hmm, maybe.
I could try safe mode.
Oh, that's a good idea.

2:35 AM
Yes, or a blank profile.

Unless safe mode also has plugins disabled

It may.

That too, but installing all those extensions again and then setting them up is tiring

It is.
So my browser often crashes on Google sites.
Like Youtube and Maps.
Especially Maps.

Oh. When did it start happening?

2:37 AM
So I often open Maps in Chrome.
Maybe a year ago?
It is not super often.
But sometimes more than once in a couple of hours.

Have you tried what you suggested to me?

Haha what have I suggested?

New profile.

Oh.
Well, I recommended it not for you to use permanently: just to play the game.
After you're finished, open your main profile.

Oh, you meant that.
Right.

2:40 AM
But a different browser is actually easier. So Chrome.

I think that's possible with FF Portable.
Yeah.

Or Palemoon.
My Firefox is now 923 MB.

I don't know anything about the FF forks.
Are they any better?
@Cerberus That's bad! How many tabs are loaded?

Fewer than ten.
But it has always been this large.
At least for the past couple of years.

You know, since my FF crashed I haven't restored all my open tabs.

2:42 AM
@Alraxite I don't remember noticing much of a difference.
Well done!

And FF is currently only taking 350 MB.
With about 10 tabs active.

@Alraxite - thanks! The first link, I tried. I was able to narrow it down from over 900 choices. I just don't know enough about advanced searches. I will study the second link you provided, though. again, thanks.

@medica Welcome!

:-)

Hi!

2:43 AM
It might be because I have Classic Theme Restorer disabled.

But I have it active too.

But I doubt it.

Oh.

@Cerberus Mistake.

I have only installed CThR recently.

2:44 AM
I think not having unloaded tabs is what that really makes the difference.
Currently I have my session safely saved under Session Manager.
Though when I restore it I think I'll just use OneTab to remove the memory load.

So not only loaded tabs hog memory, but also unloaded ones? I always suspect that.

Me too, but I had like 200 of them.

I use Session Manager too.

It's good, isn't it?
Now, I do miss some stuff from CThR.
The primary one being that I can't move the back, forward, reload, stop and most importantly the settings buttons.
So I might have to enable it again.
sigh
But I dunno. Maybe I can live without it.

Yes, it is good.
Five tabs loaded, 555 MB. This is after a restart.

2:48 AM
Hmm, I think that's about the same I used to have.
500 MB seems about right.
Try saving all your open tabs into a session file and then start with a new session.
I just restarted FF and it's now only taking 253 MB.

Five tabs loaded, thirty unloaded, 536 MB.

As I said, having no unloaded tabs should make a difference.

But it should be larger with extra unloaded tabs, not smaller.

If you're talking about the memory usage, then yes.

So it makes no sense. So that memory use is just arbitrary.

2:54 AM
Did I say something else?
Yes, it does seem to take a lot of memory.

With only one tab loaded (this room): 385 MB.

That's better.
But not quite as good as I had hoped

So my conclusion is that unloaded tabs don't matter.

Hmm?
About 100 MB.

Nooo.
-20 MB in my test above.
So more tabs use less memory.
That is not possible. So the memory usage must be arbitrary, random to a certain degree.

2:57 AM
All of the numbers you were stating earlier were always above 500 MB.
Now you have 400 MB.

sigh

You didn't tell me any other memory usage...

WTF I see my message didn't come through!
Stupid chat.

I see.

It showed up for me after I posted it. But now I do not see it.

2:59 AM
Perhaps you should type slower.

Oh, no, wait, it is there.

You must have triggered its spam trigger.
Where?

Each time after a restart:
1 tab loaded, 0 unloaded: 385 MB.
5 tabs loaded, 0 unloaded: 555 MB.
5 tabs loaded, 30 unloaded: 536 MB.
@Alraxite No, no, I would have noticed that. I thought it had disappeared after an apparently successful post. But that didn't happen, I just mislooked: it was posted correctly.

@Cerberus That just suggests to me that the browser did some GC after loading tabs.

@Cerberus You should've specified that you also started a new session. I thought that 555 was with all the unloaded tabs.

3:01 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 GC?

garbage-collection
When a process is starting, or doing stuff, it allocates memory. Then when it's idle, it doesn't allocate any more. But if you try to allocate a little memory, it might say "enough is enough" and start freeing memory, to make room for new allocations.

@Alraxite I don't understand. Unloaded is not related to a new session. Even so, I said I had restarted the browser. Every measurement was after a restart.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But how is it related to my numbers?
I know Firefox has a huge memory leak, it has always had it: with time, it occupies more and more memory, independent of the number of tabs, loaded or no.

@Cerberus maybe having the "unloaded" tabs (whatever those are) pushes it over a threshold where it actively frees memory, and the net result is less memory allocated.

I don't think so.

@Cerberus Most memory leaks are found in extensions.

3:03 AM
Quite possibly.

1. With a new session, you have no unloaded tabs and start with just one tab.
2. I presumed that you had FF remember your last open tabs every time you closed it? In which case, restarting doesn't get rid of the unloaded tabs.

@Alraxite Umm by "new session" I mean restarting the browser. Otherwise, it would be impossible: you cannot have just one tab and 5 tabs loaded.

@Cerberus Why not? It's a perfect explanation. Firefox uses GC internally.

@Alraxite None of this is relevant? I specified the exact numbers of tabs I had, loaded and unloaded.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Because this is after a restart.

3:05 AM
@Cerberus ... so? It still allocates memory, right?

And Firefox always uses 900+ MB after a while.

This doesn't specify the number of unloaded tabs.

Zero.

You only specified it afterwards.
Yes, which you didn't tell. So I assumed you didn't get rid of your unloaded tabs.

No? It was with zero tabs unloaded.

3:06 AM
Well, you tell me now.
You didn't say anything like that before.

In a garbage-collected environment memory allocations come from a pool. When the pool reaches certain usage levels it does GC. It doesn't matter if the app is "starting up" or not.

I gave you the amount with 30 unloaded tabs after. That should have made it clear.

I don't understand what you mean.

At any rate, if this isn't clear, I don't know any more:
8 mins ago, by Cerberus
Each time after a restart:
1 tab loaded, 0 unloaded: 385 MB.
5 tabs loaded, 0 unloaded: 555 MB.
5 tabs loaded, 30 unloaded: 536 MB.
@Alraxite Never mind, it is not important.

Yes, but this message was written afterwards.
@Cerberus Yes, I know.

3:08 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Look, it's just very unlikely.

@Cerberus Whatever you say. you're the progammer, I'm just a classics student.

Don't be silly.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Another try, exact same conditions: now 574 MB with 5 tabs loaded, 30 unloaded.
See? It is all around the same number, just with random variations.
So then it is unlikely that the unloaded tabs add a significant amount to memory usage.

Have some extensions disabled.

That would probably help, depending on the extensions.
But I want the extensions, so it is not worth the effort to test that.

Currently I have 29 extensions (some of which I have added to just test if they are any good, I'll disable some soon).

3:14 AM
I I have 45.
But the number of userscripts and userstyles may also matter.

Might.
It's always good to see if you can get what you want with the least possible extensions and also with the most light weight ones.
I remember you having Focus Regainer.
And that literally has it in its description that it eats your CPU.

@Alraxite Absolutely! But...it is so much work!
@Alraxite I had in enabled (but I don't use it at the moment).
But I didn't notice any CPU hogging.

You have to work to get somewhere. I think you'd be able to accomplish most of the stuff you want with half as many extensions if you take the time to search the extensions available.
@Cerberus The descriptions does say that though.
Your decision.
How much memory does a new profile use?
@Cerberus BTW, what cache settings do you have in your browser?

@Alraxite I don't know, I doubt it? I already do as much as possible through userscripts rather than extensions. In any case, my browser works fine now, so I have no reason to investigate and test other extensions.

Under Advanced and then under Network.
@Cerberus Sure.
If you're okay with 500 MB.
It's not much anyway, but is possible to have it lower.
Mine is at 283 MB with only a few tabs open and like 15 unloaded.
Hmm, I wonder if it was because I disabled Classic Theme Restorer...
My browser crashing yesterday, all in all, had a good effect.

3:25 AM
@Alraxite I see it now. I disabled it anyway, since I don't use it now.

Though it does seem to have broken Unity...

@Alraxite Well, the only disadvantage is that it is a bit less responsive at times, right?
And it has always hogged memory for me, even when I had mostly different extensions installed.

The standard disadvantages that come with applications using high memory resources, yes.

It's still quite responsive for me. What other disadvantages are there?

@Cerberus Hmm, OK. Why is the cache memory usage in such nice round numbers?
I remember the first time I checked it it was 0 MB.

3:29 AM
Presumably 350 MB is the standard amount Firefox allows?

And now it is 175 MB. But I remember tweaking it.

Oh.

@Cerberus Oh, that might be.

You never set it to 175 MB?

No, not that number at least.
I don't remember what I did.
But there doesn't seem to be many options anyhow.
So I couldn't have done much.
Mine Override option is unchecked.
I must have changed it back then if I did change something, I suppose.
BTW, do you know something other than Classic Theme Restorer that allows you to move the back, forward and settings buttons and the address bar from their default position in the UI?

3:38 AM
No idea.
But I have always had them moved, long before Classic Theme Restorer.

Okay.

Either I am still using that, or I had to install CTR to retain that ability after Australis.
I had to install CTR after Australis for some reason, but I don't remember which.

CTR allows you to do that. The default Australis doesn't.

I don't see any other extension enabled that could do it, so I must be using CTR for that.
Now it's shower time, adieu!

Bye!

3:41 AM
Good luck on your quest.

Thanks.

@MattЭллен Yup. Thanks.

Q: How could one quantify the typical modern non-literal usage style?

Joe BlowI was thinking, "'Nobody' (joke) uses words literally in English any more -- but, could we quantify that somehow?" So for example with "nobody," the word now only means "almost no-one". If you want it to mean literally nobody, you have to say "absolutely literally nobody," or "zero percent", or...

Someone rid it of its suffering.

Hi

Hi

We typically close questions that are based on a misconception. But this question sets a new record. It is based on more misconceptions than there are misconceptions. You ask us to quantify the typical modern non-literal usage style that is not typical, nor modern, nor non-literal, nor a style. (And that's just the title alone.) You are imagining things, and asking us to quantify your imagination. My personal verdict is: OVER 9000. — RegDwigнt ♦ 8 secs ago

I am fed up to here with Comment Queens who can’t be arsed to provide their own answers, instead preferring to turn SE into a debating forum instead of a Q&A site. I will give FF the benefit of seniority, reason, and politeness, but I am forever done with Auracaria: I will never answer another one of her questions, no matter what it is nor where it occurs. She will not refrain from inserting long debates in comment chains, and it is a waste of my time and my life. She is henceforth dead to me.
