How can I interpret this sentence?

"The book offers a rich read, varied in both the lives and texts of the women por-
trayed, and the perspectives and styles of the sixteen essayists."
Is the below interpretation is correct?
[ the lives and texts of the women portrayed ], and [ the perspectives and styles of the sixteen essayists. ]

Yes.
The "both" refers to the two groupings, not the individual members of either set.
Although I feel that sentence is somewhat poorly rendered.

Thank you @Robusto.

no problem

If Ice Boy and Ice Girl get married, will they have an Ice Ice Baby?

hi all

> Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle.
Nobody will ever wax chumps the same way again.

Jez
@Robusto interesting looking at the regional map of the polls too. Basically the yes vote is focussed in Glasgow/Edinburgh. The rest of Scotland is like 60-70% no.
they ought to draw an oval around Glasgow/Edinburgh and annex the rest to England
also, those "no" areas north of Glasgow/Edinburgh are nearer the oil so the oil shouldn't be owned by independence-supporting Scots ;-)

@Jez What percentage of the country lives in Glasgow/Edinburgh?

Jez
most of them obviously
which is why their higher yes vote is influential
Cameron basically gave the SNP exactly the referendum they wanted: one where they could bombard a small geographic region with endless propoganda
maximum result with minimum effort
if the vote had included the million Scots living outside Scotland, the independence movement wouldn't stand a chance
they should call it the Cameron independence referendum

1:31 PM
So it's probably a done deal: bye-bye Scotland?

Jez
shrug

it's never a done deal until the counts are in, and even then Cameron's parliament could just say "thanks for the feedback" and ignore them

Jez
i just hope that if it's a yes vote, Cameron is immediately deposed and we get a PM who isn't a total pussy to negotiate with Salmond. otherwise, Scotland will end up ruling the rUK :-)
@MattЭллен not really, considering Cameron voluntarily decided to make the referendum legally binding

d'oh
I hadn't realised

Jez
the other day i read Cameron said he'd done "all he could" to keep the union
i'm like........ :-O
that's like putting a shotgun to your face, pulling the trigger, and saying you did all you could to avoid getting shot because you tried to dodge the bullets
i can read Salmond's thoughts in those pics. "What... a... Fucking.... Moron."
The SNP are talking about defaulting on their debts of the rUK doesn't agree to a currency union. OK. Ban all trade between them and the rUK until they pay their debts.
if Salmond doesn't cave, his destroyed economy will remove him
that's the kind of hardline negotiator we need
I'd put Farage in

Is there a word or definition for drugs, like anabolic steroids, that cause havoc with the hormonal workings of a person?
In Danish we have something along the lines of "Hormonal Disturbing Drugs", but that doesn't sound quite right in English.

This probably isn't the place to ask that. It wouldn't be a generally understood term in English. Ask on a medical site.

Oh, okay. It's pretty common in Danish, as you use it for drugs you should avoid giving to kids or pregnant women.

Jez
and what's the Danish word?

"Hormonforstyrrende" which is a contraction of "Hormonal" and "disturbing".
So you'd use it like "Hormonforstyrrende medicin" = "Hormonal disturbing drugs/medicine".

Jez
google translate says "Endocrine disrupters" :-)
and nope, people don't tend to say that in English

2:00 PM
Looks like exactly what I was looking for.
So you don't hear the mention of "endocrine disrupting drugs"? :P

Jez
not in general usage no
but then i dont usually talk about pharmacuticals

Ah
It's just all the rage around here in the media at times. Lots of focus on drugs that can affect the well being of children.
[...] which is a serious risk when using drugs that mess with the hormone balance in a person’s body.
[...] which is a serious risk when using endocrine disrupting drugs.

Jez
think of the children

So a pick of the two, I should go with the first?
This is just a regular essay, not a medical thing. :P

Jez
they both sound about the same to me
"hormone disrupting drugs"?
i dunno

i wonder, does Spain get endless shit for the stuff it did in the past?
i mean England seems to get blamed by everyone for everything
hated by all its neighbours, and most former colonies are happy to be "rid" of it. why do we get so much anti-anglicism?
the irony is that England has turned into one of the most tolerant societies in the world. i guess the lesson is, just be really intolerand and protectionist or people will take the piss out of you.
look at the French and the Americans, they're proud and united

@Jez How is your dating? Still meh?

@WillHunting hi

@Arrowfar Hi, it is 12 am here, lol.

user116848
@WillHunting Here it is 9 PM :-)

Jez
@WillHunting after reading about some of the experiences guys have dating women at this age, i'm thinking it's not worth it
the chances of finding some non-feminist who won't just want me to pay her money seem slim
if you don't get into a relationship before 25, all the good ones are gone

@Jez Don't you meet any women you like at work or elsewhere? Try other avenues. And I am 33, lol.

user116848
@WillHunting Have you met anyone?

4:08 PM
@Arrowfar Nope, that is because it is not my intention to really try hard on this now. I am trying to get well first. Sadly, by the time I get well, I may be too old.

user116848
I see. Well, good luck pal! :p

@Arrowfar You too. Did you see anyone recently?
I am sorry I gave the wrong movie title yesterday. The movie you should watch is "If I Stay".

user116848
@WillHunting No man. I am just like you in that :-)

Jez
@WillHunting eligible women? nope.
why does everyone have the idea that there are a bunch of hot single women in workplaces? lol
guess it depends on the workplace

user116848
Yes, it is difficult to find someone who truly likes for who we are (and who we find attractive too).

Jez
4:20 PM
whom we find attractive ;-)

user116848
Oh, my bad :-)

4:41 PM
@Jez Try going to pubs.

How is the referendum going? I see there is a small majority against independence?

@Jez It helps the average if you work in a strip club.

Are there any sarcastic parties? Like the "Pirates who say 'Arghh'" party?

user116848
@Mitch Do we have here on SE?

user116848
4:56 PM
@Cerberus Hello! Cerberus

@Arrowfar I meant that in relation to the Scottish referendum on independence.

user116848
@Mitch Oh, I see :-) Sorry lol

@Lewis: You can't know which wording is applicable to this situation because we don't know what "this situation" is. If "this email" refers to the very email the sentence is part of, then the present tense is clearly preferrable. Just like you'd use "I'm writing you this to..." and not "I was writing you this to...". It is irrelevant that at the time the reader is reading the email, you are no longer writing it. You are writing it not from their standpoint, but from yours. Likewise for sending. From the sender's perspective, the recipient is and not was being sent the email. — RegDwigнt ♦ 7 mins ago
I would have never thought that I would have to explain myself on such a basic question.
In fact all three answers are so-so. And all three at 0.
Doesn't make us look good. This ain't no rocket science.

I am very sad that Kit no longer comes to this chat.
I think maybe I should delete my account again.

@WillHunting I didn't know that! What happened?

@DamkerngT. A few users in this chat made her upset.

Oh!
When did that happen? I probably went away too long.

I don't know exactly who though, or exactly when.

I think I'm gonna miss her too.
Have you gotten all those books from Amazon?

7:22 PM
Still waiting for my math books to arrive. There was a delay in shipping due to some weird reasons.

Hello Everyone

hi

Hi
I thought, I might not find anyone there.
How are you doing?

fine thanks, how are you?

I am good. Thank you.
Can you correct this........Here is the observation based on a couple of analysis I have performed with the ‘BlackBeltHelp’ colleagues to get an intelligible idea about Training Needs. I have monitored their calls and listened them through-out the session that I had planned on 15th,16th and 17th. ?

10:00 PM
sounds serious

It is!

if it's going to hurt someone, I can't help you

It is not going to hurt anyone. If this is not right, I will get hurt.

how so?

Do you think, It is ungrammatical in any way?
Ice Boy! are you there?
@Arrowfar Hi

Hey, I had a question. I am afraid if that goes unanswered.
@Robusto Hi

A: Literature: 'Why' at the beginning of sentences

RobustoAt the beginning of a sentence or clause in this case, why expresses incredulity or a knowing retort. It functions in that regard almost like but or and yet. It has a rhetorical flavor to it, a marker for an internal dialogue that the speaker is having with himself. In German I suspect it might ...

user116848
Yes, very nice

I have made baba ganoush.

user116848
Which is?

user116848
Baba ghanoush (Arabic بابا غنوج bābā ghannūj, also appears as baba ganush, baba ghannouj or baba ghannoug) is a Levantine dish of cooked eggplant (aubergine) mixed with onions, tomatoes, olive oil and various seasonings. The Arabic term means "pampered papa" or "coy daddy", perhaps with reference to its supposed invention by a member of a royal harem. A popular preparation method is for the aubergine to be baked or broiled over an open flame before peeling, so that the pulp is soft and has a smoky taste. Often, it is eaten as a dip with khubz or pita bread, and is sometimes added to other dishes...

user116848
But it's okay I guess. I don't laugh very often :-)

11:29 PM
I think this one is better.
But I'm sure you can have a friend or relative take a picture of you where you are actually smiling.
