4:00 AM
Tab Kit 2nd ed. seems to provide many options.
You can have tabs at the top too with it.
And can change its minimum width.
Also multiple rows are possible.
Though I prefer to keep them at the side.
All Tabs Helper might be the lightest of the vertical tabs extensions though.
@Cerberus I think it would be possible to at least add a button to a page with embedded content whose only job is to return focus to the page.

@Alraxite Hmm that might not be such a bad idea.

Though I don't know anything about scripting to be able to do that.

But...won't that mess up the page?

Like an always-on-screen small button at the side or at the top right corner?
@Cerberus I hope not.
I have two scripts that run on Youtube. I think when I click on any of the buttons they have added, I always get focus back.

Hmm.
Interesting.

4:06 AM
So it should be possible to make a do-nothing button.

By the way, now I have the problem that, when I click on a link that opens in a new tab, the tab appears on the left of the other tabs!

But I don't know about it being always-on-top.
@Cerberus Oh, that's weird.

@Alraxite That would be necessary.

I don't even think that's the default behaviour.
Not on the left, no.

Hmm I think new tabs now open to the right of their "owner" tab.
It was a pinned tab that was the owner in this case.

4:08 AM
You mean current tab?
Or something else?

So it appeared to the left of all the other tabs, but to the right of the pinned tabs.
Well, yes, current, I guess.

Oh, you don't like that?
I manually had to make changes to make FF do what you have now.

No! I want a new tab to always open to the right of all other tabs.

Because I tend to have many tabs, I find it convenient to have a new tab open beside the current tab so that I don't have to switch between tabs separated by long stretches of unused ones.

So that my tabs are always sorted chronologically.
@Alraxite Yes, I considered that at the time.

4:11 AM
Well, that's the default behaviour.
What you want.

But the problem is that I will forget I had opened the new tab. And I won't see it if it isn't on the far right.

Right.
But it must be one of your extensions then.

So I will have wild tabs growing somewhere in the middle of my tab row that I overlook.
Hmm.
@Alraxite No, this appears to be the default. I have found the About setting.

@Cerberus About setting?
I definitely remember the setting you want to be the default.

About:config
> browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
This is the one.
By default, it is set to true.
Which I do not want.

4:14 AM
I think that's only for opening links in new tabs.
But you can try changing it.

How do you mean?
I am talking about opening links in new tabs.

Oh, you were?
Oh, OK then.

I have changed it, and now it is as I want it.

That's not the default.

Indeed not.

4:15 AM
I thought you were talking about opening a new tab.
With the plus button or ^t.
@Cerberus BTW, Adblock Plus is also a known memory hog.
I use BlueHell Firewall.
Though it might not be as capable at blocking ads as the former.
It does a good job for me though.
As far as I can tell, at least.

@Alraxite A new non-blank tab.
@Alraxite I use Adblock Edge.
How does that firewall work?
I don't think I could do without having the best Adblocker.

@Cerberus I don't know about this one, but if the only difference is that it doesn't have any whitelists, then it's probably a memory hog too.

That is probably the only difference.
But I absolutely need to see no ads.
Not in Youtube videos, not anywhere.

@Cerberus What's in the description is the best I can give you: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bluhell-firewall
@Cerberus I don't think I see any ads.

By the way, Firefox is still using 720MB after disabling Tabmix Plus. Or is that not what I am supposed to look at ?

4:30 AM
@Cerberus Me neither.

OK.

@Cerberus TabMix Plus is a memory hog. There might be others in your addons list (though having a large number of not-classified-as-memory-hogs will still take memory)
Also, how many tabs are active?

I have many open, but most are not loaded.

Actually, mine takes about the same currently. It usually is near 500. Probably because I've many tabs open.
Same here.
I have over 200.
But most not loaded.
Many are in different tab groups.

Haha we are hopeless.
I have more like 50 open.
Once in a while, I close most.

4:34 AM
OK, that's a lot.

But not loaded.

Oh.

I just don't like closing things.

Hehe.
It's the active ones that matter.

Yes, but I think non-active ones still have some effect.

4:35 AM
Yes, perhaps.
But not as much.
I should perhaps try OneTab.

Haha so many extensions!
We should probably be using fewer.
But it's bed time here.

> If MouseButton = "{Lbutton}"
Click
Else
Send %MouseButton%
@Cerberus Yes!
@Cerberus Oh, OK. Good night!

@Cerberus Sleep tight!

@Alraxite I don't understand why this was necessary...
Perhaps one of the not obvious optimisations? We will never know.

@Alraxite Huh, what is that about?
@Mahnax You too! Eventually...
@Alraxite Is that my script?

4:46 AM
@Cerberus Yes
Your ClickPlace function!

@Alraxite Oh, that is just for flexibility, so you can also use it with a different mouse button; and I thought perhaps "Click" was faster than "Send {Lbutton}".
But I haven't tested that bit.

Oh, I see.

Perhaps this bit could be deleted:
If MouseButton = "{Lbutton}"
Click
Else
Not sure.

It should work, why not sure?
If it works with {Rbutton} and rest.

It will work; the question is: is it faster or slower?

4:48 AM
That I do not know.

Nor I.

You can also use Click to send right mouse clicks.

By the way, I regularly have trouble with hotkeys like ^t and ^c: sometimes it will just send c. I assume the control key was released before the c.

Or any other mouse button for that matter.

Oh.
This probably seemed simpler, without having to look up parameters for Click.

4:51 AM
@Cerberus Are we talking about the plugin script?

Oh, and I also often have trouble with OnClipboard: it often doesn't work.
@Alraxite Sorry, no: Autohotkey in general.

@Cerberus I'll have to look that one up...
@Cerberus OK. I don't understand. What do you make them do?

@Alraxite An action is triggered by a clipboard change.
@Alraxite Mouse gesture "N" sends ^t in Firefox, to open a new tab.
Occasionally, it will not work, and I see the letter t instead if I'm in a text box, like this chat.
Same for ^c.

Oh, so you didn't sleep. What a surprise! This is very unlike you, Cerby.

@Cerberus So you have in your mouse gesture program: "N"--> Send weird hotkey that you will never actually type--> Autohotkey has said weird autohotkey to send ^t?
Might not be the best way to represent what I wanted to say.

4:56 AM
@Mahnax I know!! I am not myself.
It's shocking.
I always go to bed immediately when I say I will, especially when someone is talking to me about Autohotkey. Quoting AHK scripture, even!
@Alraxite No, actually it sends ^t. And Autohotkey picks it up.

@Cerberus Truly. I wonder if perhaps it's Rutger speaking with us…

@Cerberus Why do you have AHK pick it up?

@Alraxite I understand what you were saying.
@Mahnax Haha he usually goes to bed early!

Shouldn't FF directly respond to it?

Asin, 6 hours ago!

4:58 AM
@Cerberus Right, well, it is seven o'clock in the morning.

@Alraxite Hmm because of the anti-plugin script. But, now that you mention it, perhaps Autohotkey does not intercept it at all, because it also happens on pages like this chat.
@Mahnax A perfectly normal bed time, right?
What is your time?

@Cerberus It's eleven here.

@Cerberus Does after disabling every AHK script this still happens?
I also have my sleep cycle screwed...
But that's normal with me.

@Mahnax Ah, 8 hours earlier! I can never remember.

@Cerberus Me neither.

5:02 AM
@Alraxite I don't know, it does not happen often enough to test it. Luckily.
It only happens in heavy applications, I think, like Firefox.
@Mahnax Good. Then I am not the only fool.

@Cerberus Ha.
I can always remember that Finland is nine hours ahead though.
I suppose I could make an effort to remember the Netherlands too.

@Cerberus Hmm, it's difficult to guess why that is. Are you using the same anti-focus script that you posted before?
I must say, I do find your script very confusing at some points.
Well, actually not that much, not that I look at it again.
But I haven't read it to the bottom.

@Mahnax Hmm 1 hour's difference would make sense.
@Alraxite Yes.
@Alraxite Understandable. It grew organically, experimentally. It is a mess. But it works.

@Cerberus Then it doesn't even have anything that will have it work only when the title ends with "[Plugin]"!

Huh?

5:09 AM
Don't you want it to only work when the title ends with "[Plugin]"?

I don't understand.

Isn't that what the GM script is for?

Yes, and that is what it does.

Your script doesn't have anything that makes those hotkeys only work when the title ends with "[Plugin]".
This seems everything:

Huh.

5:11 AM
#IfWinActive ahk_class MozillaUIWindowClass ahk_class MozillaWindowClass

> If ( ControlName = FullControlName or WinActive("[Plugin]") or WinActive("Google Maps") or WinActive("YouTube") or AfterFullScreen )

Oh.
My Notepad find utility didn't find anything when I searched for "plugin".

"Match case"?

No.

"Search down"? Not that, but you know what I mean.

5:14 AM
Oh, probably.
OK, so you do have that implemented. My bad
(Why is there only an "Up" and "Down" option for searches anyway?)

I know!

That's a white box.
No longer.

Sorry, the box was semi-transparent.

I don't have that? Or are we not talking about Notepad?

As long as Wrap Around is selected, it will work.
I have Notepad++.

5:17 AM
Ah.

What do you edit Autohotkey scripts in?

Notepad as of now.
I know Notepad++ provides syntax highlighting for AHK.

I have been planning to switch to one of the dedicated Autohotkey editors.
Yes, at least Notepad++ has that. But the dedicated editors are presumably even better.

@Cerberus Such as?

Command expansion and such.
It is also possible in NP++, but it never worked reliably for me.
Intellisense.
Really useful.

5:20 AM
@Cerberus Do you know what a springhare/springhaas is?
It is not a hare at all!
It is not a leporid. It is its own thing.

@Cerberus Can it be not possible that ControlGetFocus, ControlName, A is picking up a control by the name of GeckoPluginWindow" . A_Index (however A_Index is supposed to be parsed) on this page and others?

It is from South Africa, which why it has a duelling Anglo-Dutch-Afrikaans name.
The South African Springhare (Pedetes capensis), or springhaas as it is called in Afrikaans, is not actually a hare, but a member of the order Rodentia. It is one of two living species in the genus Pedetes, and is native to southern Africa. Formerly, the genus was considered monotypic and the East African Springhare (P. surdaster) was included in P. capensis. Though the species look alike at a casual glance, scientific study can easily determine which is which. == Characteristics == The springhare resembles a small kangaroo (though unrelated) with well-developed hind legs, which allows it to leap...
I wonder why the settlers thought it was a bunny.
I have also learned that our mountain beaver is not a beaver (read: not a castor), but closer to a squirrel. But at least they got the order right that time.
The mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa) is a North American rodent. Not to be confused with the North American beaver Castor canadensis, or its relative the Eurasian beaver, Castor fiber, it has several common names, including aplodontia, boomer, ground bear, and giant mole. The name sewellel beaver comes from sewellel or suwellel, the Chinookan term for a cloak made from its pelts. This species is the only living member of its genus, Aplodontia, and family, Aplodontiidae. == Characteristics == Mountain beavers are brown, but their fur can range from slightly more reddish to more blackish depending...
A hare that is not a hare, and a beaver that is not a beaver.
I suppose next I’ll learn that a kangaroo rat isn’t even a kangaroo.

@tchrist Never heard of it!

I thought of you because of the springhaas name.

@Alraxite I actually don't think my issue about ^t is related to the Focus bit at all.

5:28 AM
Well...

Because I don't hear the sound that I hear when it is triggered.
@tchrist Yes, that simply means "jump hare", as you know: that would be a normal way of naming a kind of hare that jumps.

But don’t all hares jump?

Oh. Yes, that would make sense.

I can’t imagine a jackrabbit trotting or galloping.
And yes, a jackrabbit is a hare not a rabbit.
We just aren’t very good with names, I’m afraid. :)

@tchrist Yes, so it would have to be super jumpy.

5:31 AM
It could still be because of it if it is caused by something outside the if block.

He seems to go about on two legs, he’s so jumpy.

@Alraxite Hmm that is true.

At any rate, it would be better to simply have the title match at the #if part.

We should had groundhogs to our list of things that aren’t what they say they are. A groundhog is not a pig; it’s a marmot.

@Alraxite But no, it also happens with ^c, which does not call the Focus function at all.

5:33 AM
And muskoxen aren’t oxen.

It is something about Autohotkey. It simulates control-c in a way that is not 100% reliable.

And a civet cat is not a kitty.
Neither is a ringtail cat.

@Alraxite I don't know, would it make a difference?
@tchrist Is an aardvark a varken?

@Cerberus Not piggy.

@Cerberus Well, it would at least save you 20 milliseconds and AHK executing a loop 50 times everytime you used one of the hotkeys in the script.

5:35 AM
Or maybe the settlers were arrhotic and meant oddvark.
Oddvock?

@Cerberus Then you need to diagnose any other scripts that do use it.

And earthnuts aren’t nuts.

If you're sure the problem's to do with AHK.

@Alraxite Hmm maybe the 20ms, yes.
But the loop takes only 5 ms or so.
I have measured it.

And an aardwolf is not a wolf but a hyena.

5:39 AM
Maybe the measurement is not accurate, but it's Autohotkey's way, based on counting ticks or something.
And it feels very fast.
But the 20ms is worth it.

@Cerberus I think the time isn't the issue so much as the possible interferences that this unnecessary execution may cause.
@Cerberus Why...?
Is there a reason you want it that way?

Unless I put that there for another reason: maybe the Send %hotkey% command cannot come so very soon after the real hotkey? I don't remember.

And a beewolf is a bear.

@Alraxite But it can't interfere with the hotkey: it is only executed after the loop is completed.
@Alraxite I mean, if it is necessary for the whole focus thing, then it is worth it.

@Cerberus I know. But it's possible AHK is glitching.
@Cerberus As I see it, it will work the same except with the unnecessary excecutions.

5:42 AM
@Alraxite I actually think it is something to do with Autohotkey itself. I don't remember what I did to research it, but that was my best guess.
@Alraxite Maybe I should add some #IfWinActive, yes.

I don't even know why you would not want it anywhere but not there.

It would be away from the function.
It would have to come before the actual hotkeys.

Of course.

Because #If things only affect hotkeys and hotstrings.

Yes.
So??

5:45 AM
So I have to do one part of the task with the function, and another part with the section containing the hotkeys themselves. Not as easy to compare, easier to make mistakes. But it may be worth the optimisation.
But anyway, sleepy time!
Bai.

@Cerberus I think I understand. You don't want to define the same hotkeys multiple times and have all of the functions of one hotkey under that same one hotkey.
@Cerberus OK. Good night!
Don't let those bugs bite you.
(Sorry for the multiple pingings but I'm assuming you've gone to sleep.)
Oh, in that case I'm waking you up...
Damn it!

@Alraxite Oh, yes, but I was not even considering that. There is a third way.
I already have "IfWinActive Firefox" right above the Firefox hotkeys.
So I could put your #If bit there.
Haha, you cannot wake me up. My computer is not near my bedroom.

Well, you woke up.
@Cerberus Right, so I assume there's no problem.

hey
6:45 AM

7:35 AM
Question for yall.
Is the S silent or is the C silent in the word "Scent"?

The C.
Just like science.

7:52 AM

Q: In the word "Scent", is the S or the C silent?

PimgdSo I saw a post on a funny pictures site... "In the word "Scent", is the S or the C silent?" And I thought I could ask about it here. In particular, how does the pronunciation of "scent" differ from "cent" and "sent"? Small audio references would help me in particular.

Literally the same question.

8:29 AM
@Alraxite Sorry. :P

8:58 AM
@PhonicsTheHedgehog are you satisfied with my terse answer?

3 hours later…
11:30 AM
first go at code snippets on SO :D

A: File parsing at client side in web applications

Matt EllenIf you don't want to use an XHR, and your browser is sufficiently compliant with standards, you can use File and FileReader. var btn = document.getElementById('files'); btn.addEventListener('change', function(e) { var file = e.target.files[0]; var fr = new FileReader(); ...

@MattЭллен You're way cuter on SO.

11:50 AM
Dunno about that. He looks like the lead singer of the Soviet-era Town Musicians of Bremen.

Ok @Robusto I will take the buccaneers @+6.5 on Thursday night. Good luck to you and your Falcons @-6.5 :-)
Hopefully Vega$ doesn't interfere too much.
Like they did last Thursday >8(

@Robusto You get the real me on EL&U :D

On Stack Overflow and our other code-related sites, creating a minimal, complete, and verifiable example is the best way to get an answer to your question. We’ve always loved JSFiddle and sites like it because they let both askers and answerers reference runnable, working code that demonstrates their problem or solution.

Unfortunately, the use of these external sites introduces a few problems:

If the link breaks, the post becomes worthless.

If the code isn’t embedded in the page, visitors are forced to go elsewhere to get the full content of the question or answer. …

12:07 PM
@Matt what do the British odds makers have to say about Thursday's vote?

no idea
It seems equally likely either way

Minus the commission :D

"With all the talk about the invading army, we can all sense a looming perturbation in our town's tranquility, can't we?" Is this understandable?

To me, yes.

perturbation is deviation right?
in this
grammar ok?

12:15 PM
Sounds ok to me.

thanks
perturbation has two meanings

np

anxiety and deviation from norms
so I wondered if I could use it that way

How about "disturbance"?

yeah that would work as well

12:19 PM
Just a suggestion :-)

Thanks for asking.

No matter how many times I try this, no matter that I answer all the questions within two seconds, with the bonus points of 180 accrued, yet I am way below the top scorers, with the scores of more than 4,000. To get to this high score, I think you've got to answer all of the questions within a fraction of a second. What is this unfairness? Is this because all these high scorers are bots or use some kind of special software? Looks like the language learning equivalent of high-speed trading!

The motivation behind memorization is speed.
It will always be apart of education.
As long as there are "exams".

12:35 PM
I dunno, I just tried it and got to 2880 points.
And I got 2 words wrong.
So with 10/10 I'd be at like 3400. With no training whatsoever. Making 4000 seem entirely possible.

Is "dunno" apart of a well developed vocabulary?

Of course.
Any part of an underdeveloped vocabulary must also be a part of a better developed one, by definition.

Is that vocabulary difficult?
what about irenic?

What vocabulary is that vocabulary? I don't understand the question.

@MattЭллен Me, I’m looking forward to seeing what the new DK passports will look like.

12:43 PM
New DK passports. Artist's impression.
You will be required by law to recite the Monkey Rap, too.

Is that a gorilla with a basketball?

merriam webster word quizz

That's Donkey Kong with a basketball. You're a gorilla.

Now everything makes sense.

You agree @tchrist?
No answer means yes as far as I am concerned pal.

12:51 PM
The DK vote finally gives an answer to the question of why is a mouse when it spins.

However, it is still unclear who phone was.

@tchrist I agree with Reg
