@Wipqozn It's more accurate that, at the time we were having the game rec wars, Maths had a much more severe outburst, so it became a bit of a joke among us that our drama is just so low-key relatively, and "At least we're not Maths".

@GraceNote I just loaded up Pokemon Black and White to see what's what with those cartridges. In one of them I found a box full of Elgyem with synchronize that all have different natures.
I have another box full of Yamask with bad IVs.

@NickT Are you using Chrome by chance? I have had it either ignore css files or apply them too soon or some such on more than a few occasions, but usually a refresh fixes it pretty quick, not cause it to become worse...
@Wipqozn Very true, which is why I would advocate some kind of middle ground between being able to chat and not being able to chat.. Its very hard to tell what will offend someone when you do not know them .
@James I meant that if we don't feel you deserve a suspension, we'll usually comment on it if we still think it was something you should be careful about.
In fact sometimes we'll just delete a message quickly, and tell the user they should not have posted that.
It all depends on who responds to the flag, and who sees it.
Yeah I would have much preferred that to have been the course of action.
And its that last part that I disagree with..
How a situation is handled should be held up to some kind of unified flow. Not subject to who sees it and how they are feeling at that time or how busy they are.
To me, your message was obviously offensive. If I seen the flag, I probably would have validated it. I say that all the time myself, but you used the word in a very offensive manner. The word is commonly used today as derogatory term towards people with Mental Health problems
So the users responding probably felt there was no need to give you a warning.
I know their judgement has to come into play, but it would be nice to know what the reactions are supposed to be. Especially for a person's first offense.
@Wipqozn Odd, I have had no problems with people having to hand out verbal warnings before more stringent actions are taken. As a development manager at a software company that is actually exactly the path we have to take when dealing with a person who is behaving in a manner believed to be detrimental to the work environment.

@James Yes, it was. That's the way the system works. What I mean is that what you are saying sounds to me like it would just result in only suspended users if they refuse to edit/delete offensive messages.
The response should be "I'm sorry" or "I am sorry, it was not intended to offend anyone", the good old "Oh, thanks for telling me, won't happen again" is also a good one.

@Wipqozn That is good to know.. Just from what I have read your stance is that it is on the same level to suspend someone for an hour and a half as it is to tell them to choose their words with more consideration for other people.. and that I do not see myself being able to agree with.
What I'm saying is that you system sounds like you would only suspend someone if they refused to edit a message after you told them "Please edit that message"
That system wouldn't work at all, since any rational person would edit their message instead of being suspended.
The message was taken as offensive by someone or multiple someone's. A moderator read it and passed judgement on that message and removed it. What I am saying is after that has been done, I do not think suspension is something required 100% of the time.
In my case I was not running around trying to offend people, I thought I was just partaking in the conversation with a quote from a cartoon I thought people would get a grin out of.
@Wipqozn Eh...I'm a bit late to this party, but people also need to be more careful with what they flag. |: While I don't dispute that people could take legitimate issue with the content of the message in question, firing the flag-cannon seems a bit much to me for this case.
@TimStone Ive no problem with the 'flag cannon' as that is what it is there for.. to bring attention to something people feel deserves it.

Chat flags have the impact that they do so that really bad content can be taken care of quickly without moderator intervention, so throwing them up at everything someone finds disagreeable isn't particularly good.
@TimStone Yeah but when trying to find a way to handle the situation I think its easier to give the people responding options as opposed to trying to instruct the entire community to proper usage :)
While I could do nothing but read chat for an hour and a half I noted that people do not seem to like being told that they are being offensive or miss-using features they have access to, hehe.
@James Possibly, but I'm not sure how much difference it'd actually make. I have a feeling that the way flags are presented in the interface contributes most significantly to people responding how they do now.
"Oh, a blue circle! Must make it go away...There's a word in this message that mildly suggests that the person who cast the flag must be right, let me press the 'Valid' button so this will go away."
@Mana I feel like we should tell gnome about that flag. He seemed rather convinced his message was flagged just because it was him, and would not have been flagged if said by someone else. He seemed rather upset by it, which I can understand.
@TimStone I have to plead ignorance there.. though I have been using SE sites for over a year I am finding there is a very large amount of functionality these sites have that I am completely unaware of.

it works fine on the sites, where I can look at context and take a moment to contemplate, but it's just not feasible for people in other rooms to make a snap decision about chat flags.

gnome rides that line a bunch, but I think people give him crap at times when he doesn't deserve it, and we dwell too much on it when he does deserve it.

It's less about it being gnome, and just that people get fed up with his behavior in chat when he is constantly doings things which are offensive/NSFW/et cetera.
if I could set a goal for this chat room it would be "zero flags for a week" - those who tend to attract flags need to tone it down, and those who flag unnecessarily need to consider flagging more carefully
This is why I try to bring up stuff that I find offensive here. Because you know what? I like this site and I like the people here. And I want other people to like it as much as I do. But other people are less likely to like it too if we have a chat environment where people feel unsafe about speaking up about how words affect them.
flags are like the nuclear option. when you flag something in here, that means you earnestly believe someone deserves a suspension for what they posted.
What I was trying to say is that our chat isn't always the best when it comes to users expressing how they feel about how offensive something is.
So users will just flag it, since they are afraid to bring it up themselves.
Like I said above, it's something that falls to both the flagger and those responding to the flag.
you can't blame the flagger for someone being suspended when they shouldn't have. They didn't suspend the user, they just brought the post to the attention of people that could.
Which is why I'll agree our flag system does need improvement, to avoid users from just being lazy and validating flags without checking for context.

I flag a post. It's net flag score is at a "1". If a 10k user validates that, the net flag score is at a "2". IF another user flags it, the net flag score becomes "3". IF another user then invalidates a flag, the net flag score becomes "2".
The obvious problem in the example above being that if it takes time to gain context to decide the flag is actually invalid, it may have already picked up the prerequisite valid votes by people who didn't bother taking the time to get said context.
The way that the server communicates flags is also a bit buggy...which has been on my to-do list to look into for a while, argh (though this isn't really relevant).
