11:00 PM
@fredley I assume you've copied that to your clip board.

@Wipqozn Actually no, hence the mis-spelling
@Wipqozn I can see why it would make sense though

...did you intend that one?

@fredley The Super Nintendo was my favourite console.
@GraceNote Apparently not.

@GraceNote Stupid beer making me stupid

@Wipqozn I liked Virtual Boy better.

11:01 PM
@fredley You probably should be drinking Smart Beer, then.

@GraceNote Beat me to it.

@OrigamiRobot I lol'd

@GraceNote Excellent idea. Think there's some in the fridge

Q: Are all projectiles affected by gravity in BF3?

hydroparadiseSo, as the games documentation cleary states that, everything is affected by gravity. Well, I was in the Apache the other day and landed on one of the builings at a flag post and seated the gunner position. I fired off in the distance, and it appeared that there was no bullet drop at all. I sa...

Q: How is the order of champion pick selected (draft pick)?

ToastI know in ranked games, a characters elo determines the order of champion picks. In non-ranked draft pick, pre-arranged teams have priority. Does team size, elo, or anything else affect the order of champion pick?

11:02 PM
IT IS DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE. TAKE THIS.

@badp That's great.

@badp I would star this, but I have run out of stars

> Scrotum-crushing difficulty in games is fun if your failures are undeniably the result of your own incompetence. In the original Shank, that wasn’t always the case, but the sequel, gladly, fixes that.

@GnomeSlice very true.

I think I've exceeded my daily recommended quota of LAZERS indirect absorption. (Those LAZERS are so powerful, you can get sick merely by standing nearby them.)

11:04 PM
I starred a star. glares at @GnomeSlice Inception!

I'll go have a midnight shower.

@badp Midnight Shower is a good band name.

Oh nice, Waves has gone on sale through the developer's site. A steam key is included with it. @badp, @GraceNote, you might be interested in this.

@ArdaXi I lol'ed.

11:06 PM
@Origami Any adjective noun is a good band name, also verb nown.

@GnomeSlice Why the hell am I getting a Dutch description with no way to change it?

@ArdaXi Must be where you are. Hang on.
I'm guessing you can read it there.

Ah, yeah, thanks.

@RonanForman Verb Nown is a good one.

@Arda Have you heard about the latest Metroid release, you get to fly the spaceship! And Metroid even gets her shinespark back.

11:07 PM
It's just unbelievably annoying when something decides to completely ignore my localization settings and just decides to use my location.

Also, here is a good review of the games in the current indieroyale alpha bundle.

I have my browser set up to request English content, so I expect English content.
@RonanForman I know nothing about Metroid, so no.
@RonanForman So "Bad Music" is a good band name?

Here's a handy in-depth Indie Royale Alpha Collection review, thanks to the v.helpful @BacklogJourney: http://www.backlogjourney.com/2012/02/work-in-progress-indie-royale-round-up.html

@ArdaXi Absolutely

What about the new zelda one? Zelda gets his grapling hook from wind waked again.

11:09 PM
@RonanForman These don't even look grammatically correct

@RonanForman Played one game, but I'm not attached enough to care about the fact Zelda is a female.

> 3079 is a game that proudly wears its influences on its sleeves. Introduced as a mix of Minecraft and Fallout, it would certainly look that way from the screenshots. However, as a game it tends to transcend both of those titles to a pretty unique shooter with a large RPG influence.
Interesting.

Or the new one from bungie? Halo goes around punching people.
It's pretty samey..

@RonanForman Halo is a pretty cool guy.

@RonanForman Definitely don't care about any console-only titles.
Troll harder.

11:10 PM
@ArdaXi That's a pretty dumb thing to say.

@GnomeSlice Why?

@GnomeSlice Not really, if he prefers PC gaming.

You've played every console-only game?

I don't care about console-only titles because I do not own a console.

That makes more sense.

11:11 PM
@GnomeSlice No... I've hardly played any. Hence I don't care about them.

@GnomeSlice I disagree. I don't have a console, so I don't care about a game if there's no PC version.

@ArdaXi Starring that.

user image
6

@RedriderX ...why?

@RedriderX Yay... I guess?

11:11 PM
I actually added PS3 to my ignored tags because I don't have one and I don't plan on ever getting one.

You people and your console wars

I said I don't care about them. I don't hate them.

@GnomeSlice Because I think it's useful/interesting.

@fredley @Lazers would be so proud of the slowness.

@RedriderX You don't really have to state that you're starring it. Usually just starring it suffices.

11:12 PM
@OrigamiRobot Most of the time was Photoshop getting its ass in gear

@RedriderX It's neither of those things. It's his personal opinion.

@StrixVaria Usually
@GnomeSlice A personal opinion can be both useful and interesting.
Interesting is more likely than useful, but still.

@Arda What about that MMO you've been playing, can you play as star trek? You know, the one played by Patrick Stuart.

@fredley It's just giving you time to read all those names/patents.

@RonanForman Right subject matter, poor execution.

11:13 PM
@GnomeSlice I think @ArdaXi's opinion is interesting.

@RonanForman If you'd combined Star Wars with Star Trek in some fashion, I might have been offended.

@OrigamiRobot If I ever meet Thomas Knoll I intend to lazer etch my name into his eyes

@Arda That's not the point I was trying to make.

@RonanForman Then what was the point you were trying to make.
All I got out of it is that you were trying to be deliberately wrong in some way.

@GnomeSlice Ask a Soul Calibur V question about what happens when armor breaks. I'm curious, but I don't own the game, so there's really no point in me asking the question.

11:15 PM
The inception thing, just because it's in the movie doesn't mean they are synonymous.

@RavenDreamer I think it's been asked.

@RonanForman Oh, then it's very poorly executed. You could've brought up examples like 'matrix'.

Why restrict it to one medium?

Anyway, just think about it, I'll be off for a few minutes.
@RonanForman Because you seem to fail at taking too big a step. ;-)

4
Q: Does armor break have any impact on gameplay?

MaxxDoes breaking your opponent's armor affect gameplay in any way or is it all aesthetics? Does wearing different armor affect anything?

11:17 PM
I was hoping you'd question me saying them, so I could give the same reason you give for the inception thing.

@RonanForman I agree with @Arda. I didn't see the connection at all until you explicitly said it. Even then I thought you were trying the old pretty cool guy troll

@Wipqozn I'm thinking about making a PvP roller coaster in Minecraft. You in?

@OrigamiRobot What does that even mean?

@Wipqozn Arrows
Redstone switches

@OrigamiRobot Ah. You can't shoot people in minecarts.
At least, not chickens.

11:20 PM
That's partly to do with it took me about 2 minutes to reply after the original message.

@OrigamiRobot This sounds awesome.

@GnomeSlice Shooting a minecart destroys it.

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, so how would that work.

@RonanForman So you wanted to make the point that "inception" should not be equated to recursion just because recursion was a significant theme in Inception?

Exactly.

11:22 PM
@murgatroid99 Yes.

@GnomeSlice If there is one thing I know, it's that this community can make anything in MC work.

SeaView - Google Street View for the sea: http://bitly.com/zPCpLF
...?

@OrigamiRobot Awah?
How would that work?

I'll make it work.

OK @RonanForman @GnomeSlice. I disagree with you. Due to internet memes, the synonymy has entered common usage, so like with many other words in English, common usage has added a definition to "inception"

11:24 PM
@murgatroid99 I agree, and that's stupid.

@GnomeSlice Which part? The part where people relate a concept to the name of a work that featured it prominently?

@fredley How's the Race for Wool map been going?

Yes..

@John Good, I've filled out a lot of it

@OrigamiRobot Would you have two tracks running adjacent to each other and just have people shoot at each other?

11:27 PM
@RavenDreamer When should I expect your emai - fuck he left.

@John Another good session and we'll be close to something playable

Want to see some of the worst opinions ever expressed? Then you're in luck! Millions of video game forums are at your fingertips right now!

@fredley I can't wait for @Wipqozn to starting dying in it us to play it!

@John It's going to be quite hard

@fredley >:D
I wonder, can we still play it even though we made it?

11:28 PM
@John I added some monster rooms. With soulsand flooring.

@fredley Ooooh

@John Them be fighting words.

@murgatroid I'd normally be fine with it, the problem is, inception already has a meaning.

@John We can be a team. Not that unfair an advantage
@Wipqozn If you complete the map without dieing once, you win an entire internet

@fredley Take the basement: it relies heavily on the user not knowing what's next.

11:29 PM

Q: Is there a "Canonical" Commander Shepherd?

Raven DreamerThe Mass Effect Series is based on players taking control of Commander Shepherd, and, like most RPGs, the player is given choices and customization options. In Mass Effect (the first game), players get to pick the commander's first name, gender, pre-service history (Spacer, Colonist, Earthborn),...

Since I made it, I'll have no trouble with it at all.

@John What's next will be considerably easier with items harvested from the dungeon
It'll be an interesting challenge: stay at the start, explore properly and gather items, or press on ahead

@fredley Yes...we faced this challenge last time we played a RfW map.

@RonanForman I think a good example is the word "bug" in programming. It originally referred to a type of animal, but it got its name as a programming term because an actual moth was found causing a problem in a computer.

@GnomeSlice beat cha on survival.

11:30 PM
My team explored, and the other team pressed ahead and missed a piece.

@alexanderpas Sorry, what?

@GnomeSlice waves.

@alexanderpas Ah. I've only played it once.

@John It would be worth hiding a bucket of water behind a particularly fiendish basement room

My computer can't really handle it. =[

11:31 PM
It's effectively a free pass through the fire maze

@alexanderpas By how much?

@fredley Aren't they all fiendish? :P

@murga The word 'set' has 20 different uses, bit by using context ou can work out which one, inception and recursion however could both be used in the same way and you couldn't know which one.

11:32 PM
@fredley I'm thinking we should put the water in the basement maze... I expect many mobs to spawn in there.

@John Ha, I guess so. I've hidden some chests in very obscure places, good locations for diamond swords/armor that will help with the fiendish mob rooms

@GnomeSlice not too much, just doubled your score.

@alexanderpas Nice.

@GnomeSlice While looking at the HMAS imagery, I don't know what looks better. The actual sea, or what Aquaria calls the veil.

@fredley Excellent. :)

11:32 PM
@John Do another one!

@RonanForman There are lots of words in English that have exact synonyms. This is not a bad thing

@fredley Another maze in the basement? Of the same type?

@badp I'm assuming that's the surface from beneath?

@John Different, make it totally underwater, with some breathing spots

@GnomeSlice Yeah

11:33 PM
3D water maze

@GnomeSlice What game is this?
@fredley Yeah, I was working on one of those.

@John Waves.

It's before the fire maze.
@GnomeSlice waves back

28 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
Oh nice, Waves has gone on sale through the developer's site. A steam key is included with it. @badp, @GraceNote, you might be interested in this.

@John Oh I see. Then make one like the water maze is currently, lots of uphill struggles against water flows

11:33 PM
@mugratriod I know, and I'd like less of them.

If @RonanForman

Hey, they stole our logo... backlogjourney.com/2012/02/…

@GnomeSlice I see.

@RonanForman any chance of getting the server up on Sunday eve?

11:34 PM
@GnomeSlice We'll sue!
@fredley Yeah, I didn't have time to finish it, so I wasn't sure how well it was working right now.

@murga Wait, we're not talking about synonyms, we're talking about homophones.

Speaking of stunning imagery

@badp That's pretty incredible.

@John I added a (relatively easy) jump puzzle too, you know, just for some variety

@RonanForman Homophones are words that sound the same, which is not true of inception and recursion

11:35 PM
@Wipqozn you won vs Arda is that correct?

I find the trick with jump puzzles is to make them scary, it makes falling so much more likely

@badp Yes.

@fredley And we've got a hard one with that staircase. :)
@fredley Interesting...

@badp Yes.

@RonanForman You're talking about synonyms. And two words can be synonyms even if one of the words is a homonym.

11:36 PM
@John I made an adventure map that had one in a flaming room. All the youtube playthroughs I watched had problems with it

In this case inception is a homonym, one meaning of which is a synonym of recursion.

Inception != Recursion. You can't really argue that.

@GnomeSlice I can, and just did.

@GnomeSlice I would argue that too

@ArdaXi Go get a dictionary and prove it to me.

11:36 PM
@fredley I remember that. I had problems with that room too.

@GnomeSlice Dictionaries don't make the language, they just document it.

@John STOD?

They're usually behind like a year too.

@Wipqozn So you're aware you're know playing Gnome?

Here are my thoughts on the newest @IndieRoyale Alpha Fund. How are the in development games so far? Click to see. http://www.backlogjourney.com/2012/02/work-in-progress-indie-royale-round-up.html
They stole our logo!
@ArdaXi Right.

11:37 PM
@badp I was not.

@fredley Er... I was thinking Trantorus. What's STOD?

I am now though.

@GnomeSlice old :P

@badp Oh, we are?

@GnomeSlice Dey tuk ur heart!

11:37 PM
Winner goes vs... Brant I guess?
@Brant any news from @jaminja?

@GnomeSlice Yep.

@murga My point is if inception were to be a homonym, in most cases, you wouldn't be able to work out which meaning you meant, therefore, it's a bad thing.

@RonanForman There's plenty of words like that though, set for example.

@RonanForman Can you think of an example in which context would be insufficient to convey the intended meaning?

11:39 PM
@fredley Well that's cool. I should play more adventure maps, but I need to finish this asteroid one first...

@Arda When can you not work out which meaning of set is meant?

@John Wow, sounds good

@RonanForman When can you not work out which meaning of inception is meant?

@John *we

@fredley (It's the map I'm blogging about)

11:40 PM
@RonanForman Did you guys start the adventure map?

@RonanForman Yes, but we finishing it includes me finishing it.

Remember that the most common instance of using "inception" to mean "recursion" is someone describing a recursive situation and then using "inception" or a portmanteau with it and another word. This is usually fairly unambiguous

@John Ah. I have not read your blog, sounds interesting though!

@fredley I don't have a blog, I'm doing it on the GSE one.

@John Ah, I see!

11:41 PM
@murgatroid99 In that sense, one could argue that the suffix -ception is the word that has become synonymous with recursion, however.

@ArdaXi Defini-ception

@murgatroid99 My friend Kenzie bought me a MLP shirt. O.o

Which makes even less sense.

@ArdaXi That could be, but I think I have seen instances of people giving an arbitrary recursive situation and then saying "inception"

@RonanForman Why?

11:42 PM
@Tristan That is awesome.

@murgatroid99 Like me just now, which started this discussion.

@ArdaXi Right, and that is why I would say that the whole word has gained another meaning

Because it's not even the word the film used.

@murgatroid99 And I concur.
@RonanForman No singular body, not even Hollywood gets to define language.

11:43 PM
On an unrelated note, my wireless router was destroyed in the move so it's going to be a while before I'm back online with any sort of regularity.

@alexanderpas Great picture on that article

@RonanForman They definitely did use the word inception in the movie
@Tristan cat5 cable is really cheap

@murgatroid99 I know. But I'm living at home til I get back on my feet, so it's my parents internet. I can't hardline in without them losing internet unless I get a router.

@murgatroid99 cat5 cable = layer 1 security.

@alexanderpas what?

11:46 PM
@RonanForman The whole, basic point I at least am trying to make is... who cares? Why care about "correct" language if the right meaning can be inferred from context anyway?

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a product of the Open Systems Interconnection effort at the International Organization for Standardization. It is a prescription of characterizing and standardizing the functions of a communications system in terms of abstraction layers. Similar communication functions are grouped into logical layers. A layer serves the layer above it and is served by the layer below it. For example, a layer that provides error-free communications across a network provides the path needed by applications above it, while it calls the next lower layer to send ...
also, my mouse is blinking to me...

@AshleyNunn Ping me when you get that package! =P

@alexanderpas Pet?

@fredley a rat ;)

@alexanderpas My comment was unclear. I know what the network layers are; I just didn't know what point you were trying to make

11:48 PM
@alexanderpas Almost got one of those recently.

Oh @Tristan, there you are!

@alexanderpas How is it?

Was wondering where you vanished to.
Seems like you haven't been on in ages.

@Wipqozn He's been moving and such. Did you miss the starred post where he explained he wasn't going to be on regularly for a week or two?

@John I did.

11:50 PM
@Arda You're constantly correcting my theirs and toos.

@Wipqozn Oh. Well he's been moving, so doesn't have stable internet.

You know full well what I mean.

@GnomeSlice I love the wide grip! three buttons, three fingers and thumb + pinky rest. - its a bit heavy even without the additional weight, but that's compensated by the High DPI (I'm on 5600 now.)

Otherwise you couldn't correct me.

@alexanderpas How durable is it?
I tend to drop my mice from time to time.

11:51 PM
@RonanForman "I think what offends [people] when confronted with extremely informal, unpunctuated and haywire language is the implication of not caring that underlies it. ... But that is an issue of fitness, of suitability, it has nothing to do with correctness. There's no right language or wrong language any more than are right or wrong clothes. Context, convention and circumstance are all."

@GnomeSlice it's a F-ing autobot.

@alexanderpas So... very?

@Arda How does that defend your point?

@NickT That better not be child porn.

11:53 PM
@RonanForman That using improper grammar is not definitely wrong, but it's still... unfit.
It looks bad, just like "wrong clothes" look bad.

Same with using the wrong work for recursion then.

@RonanForman I don't think so.

@RonanForman There's a difference between common usage adding meaning to a word and using bad grammar.

@NickT What's the blue square?

@RonanForman But what's right or wrong linguistically or sartorically is pretty much the same thing, and subjective at that.

11:54 PM
@fredley To the right of it? That means it was flagged.

@John Yes

@fredley Means someone flagged the image as spam/offensive.

22 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
user image

Dunno, never seen it before

@ArdaXi Incorrectly, it's hilarious.

11:55 PM
@Wipqozn Yeah. Haven't been on in a while. No router so I can't get on my laptop. No unsecure wireless connection around either. And, my phone is on the fritz, making accessing the site difficult. I'll have a new phone on Monday, so I'll be around more after that

@GnomeSlice yep, very durable. and battery life is great! even when you need to refresh daily it's 5 seconds of work.

@murgatroid99 Oh wow, not flagged when @GnomeSlice posts it, but flagged when @NickT posts it.

Sigh

@murgatroid99 Wow.
Wow, who flagged it?
And why?
@alexanderpas Refresh?

Can't you all just get along in there?

Q: Is there any qualitative difference between starships in SWTOR?

SaintWackoIn SWTOR, each class gets a different starship (with a couple exceptions). The starship descriptions make it seem like they all have different roles, but is that reflected in the ship itself? Is there really any difference between ships, for example in cargo space, shielding, or firepower?

@MarcoCeppi Not with oneboxing of images.

@MarcoCeppi Ask a stupid question...

@MarcoCeppi I can imagine it having something to do with @NickT blatantly not caring about offending people before.

OK I have to go eat dinner. I will be back later

Why add a word to a meaning that isn't needed? We have a perfectly suitable word. All other meaning come from two cultures meeting and bringing their words with them, or using one word to describe 10.

11:57 PM
@GnomeSlice switch batteries. you get two of them. one to charge via usb, and one to put in the mouse.

Using Opera mobile to chat is beyond tedious

@RonanForman Language isn't something practical or constructed.

I'll leave you children to play

There isn't a committee that decides whether to add a certain meaning to a word.

@NickT I find chatting from mobile period to be tedious.

11:57 PM
@alexanderpas Neat!

@MarcoCeppi That could be dangerous.

There's a committee that decides whether to add an entry in a dictionary, but that's no effect on language by itself.

@John using a program like google talk isn't so bad

@NickT Yeah, I meant SE chat. When you're only talking to one person, there's no worry of you falling too far behind.

@MarcoCeppi can we sext each other like all the kiddies are doing today?

11:59 PM
@GnomeSlice also, no tools required. the only tool you need to switch the pinky rest and ajust some of the other stuff... is part of the mouse itself.

@John true
