@GnomeSlice if you start allowing created characters then you start getting the 8-foot-tall Xibas with extra reach, and tiny Astaroths and all sorts of dumb stuff starts happening

You should be able to use custom characters in tournaments, they let you modify the reach and damage.

then you have to start having an actual save, which means your boxes have to have profiles, which means they have to either have internal memory or a hard drive or use cloud save

it's a combination of convenience and setting a baseline for the tournament - why make things so complicated?

@GraceNote I'd much rather have to fight regular characters than have to worry about what the reach on a tinier Astaroth is, or whether an oversized Leixia hits me with a particular attack

Depends on your perspective. It's easier to understand matchups when looking mostly at the default than if any possible combination of stats is present.

Likewise, it makes it so that you're more likely to understand what your opponent is capable of and be able to judge your strategy accordingly.

I still just think it's silly. If you can't adapt to a different sized character, you shouldn't be in a tournament.

@GnomeSlice we're talking about an environment where individual frames make a difference (people do the math for frame advantage/disadvantage for individual combos and individual statuses) - variable reach is a huge change

The standard fighting game meta revolves mostly around the differences in players being their strategies and approaches, not in the actual stats, when they use the same characters. This makes it so that there is some standard bed of knowledge for a participant to understand their opponent's capabilities.
