It looks to me like you got feedback already, tbh. xnor made a comment with 3 upvotes, that's 4 possible downvotes right there.
Changing rules that invalidate answers is one of those sacred cows around here ;)

@ZachGates Reasons why people might not like this challenge: It's very similar to things that have been done to death in the past; the restrictions aren't restrictive enough to make it interesting to solve; it makes the assumption that all languages have things called "integers" and "strings", which is not true

Plus, I'm not sure that most of the other answers are any better (cleaner, whatever) than the ones which were deleted/invalidated.

@quartata In your challenge, can words have 0 letters?

Generally, if a majority of the answers have "I'm not sure if this is valid..." qualifiers, the challenge might get away from you :)

No that would be invalid input
I thought I specified that... I'll edit it

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

mbomb007Prove Your Language's Turing Completeness code-golf The goal is to show whether your language is or isn't Turing complete with the shortest program possible. This is different than "interpret BF" questions, since that's only one way to show the completeness of a language. This question will mai...

I really thought that I had managed to read it by now
It actually looks kind of fun ;)

No it wasn't specified sorry
I'll fix that
Glad you like it
I thought it was a clever challenge
Chat seems to be a better acid test for challenges than sandbox so far

@quartata Throw a copy of CLR at their heads and tell them to look at chapter 31...

@quartata In between talking about bucket-pooping, that is.

Heh
That's basically what I did
I mean abstract algebra does have CS potentional
Just look at burnside lemma

6:12 PM
Strange, I find abstract algebra to have a lot of similarities with CS math.

That's a pretty simplistic example but still
Yeah and it's a lot about structure too
I think they just like having direct applications
Or maybe they didn't realize that the math part of Math/CS was for real
Gotta go bye all

@Geobits I think I missed that conversation.

You didn't miss much. Mostly just shootin' the shit.

Into a bucket?

i can send the buckets over if u want

6:19 PM
@AlexA. Hopefully...?

Buckets aren't the only decent receptacle.

Better than shot glasses.

oh god, what have i started!

Yes. Those should be kept clean so that they may hold the holiest of beverages.

:P

6:26 PM
Don't forget the holy grail

Woo! I'm about to install my dual-boot linux. Catch you on the flip side!

Don't flip it too much. Good luck :D

Dual boot has kind of a big problem with not being able to use both at once.

@PhiNotPi ElementaryOS?
@feersum Why is that a problem? :P
That's what virtual machines are for.

VMs have the problem of needing more resources to run smoothly than dual booting :)

6:29 PM
Virtual machines are exactly not dual boot.

Yeah, my Windows VM basically makes both my Mac and my VM run at a snail's pace.

My desktop is alright with it, but not my work computer.

Do you use Linux at work?

No :(

What do you use? Windows?

6:31 PM
Yes D:

:(
I'm sorry

me too

It's a not-so-great docked laptop at that.

I mean, I use windows too. I am not sorry.

The only job I've had where we used Linux, my group was the only group that used Linux. Everyone else used Windows. We had all sorts of compatibility issues with the other groups. We were required to use Outlook for email, so we had to remote desktop into a Windows server just for email.

6:33 PM
lol, office 365

That sounds like policy causing compatibility issues tbh.

Also, enterprise do not easily get professional tracking softwares for linux, so they force users to go to windows
@AlexA. were you not allowed to use browsers in linux too?

@Optimizer It was before Office 365 was a thing.

There are no linux browsers except lynx.

@Geobits I agree.

6:34 PM
@AlexA. ummm how old r u?

Turned 25 last Friday.

@Optimizer You do realize that's only 4 years old, right?

^

@Geobits Ahem. telnet host 80

Fair point. I haven't played with telnet in a while :D

6:37 PM
The only telnet thing I know is the ASCII Star Wars.

@AlexA. It can't have been your birthday... I mean there was no challenge... No milking of the fact that people give you birthday rep... D:

@BetaDecay I thought about a birthday challenge but I couldn't think of anything interesting. And I didn't want birthdays to become the new flags.

ASCII Star Wars? Pfft. Legend of the Red Dragon.

I don't know what that is...

@AlexA. That reminds me, still hasn't happened yet.
@Optimizer You've let me down ;)

6:41 PM
@Optimizer Come to think of it, Office 365 came out in 2011 and I started at that job in 2012. So I guess it was about a year old. But the company was way, way behind the times in terms of every single technology they used (and as I understand it they still are), so I'm not surprised they didn't use it.

it came out in 2011, but outlook only launched in 2013 for enterprise

@AlexA. Seth Able the bard could explain it to you.

@Optimizer I see.
@BetaDecay It's already come and gone. It happened briefly while Martin and Doorknob were both away but then Calvin nuked it.
@BetaDecay It was only a matter of time. :P

I missed it? Aw crap :P

6:43 PM
He nuked my hastily written, yet eloquent tag wiki snippet :(

:(
aditsu posted a challenge with the tag
He's a true hero

Why can I not delete my question? >.>

@ZachGates Because you have to suffer the downvotes first.
3

You can't delete if it has answers (IIRC it has to have upvoted answers to prevent deletion).

@ZachGates Why would you? You have several answers already, two with 4 upvotes.

6:44 PM
:/ ok
@AlexA. Clearly not a well-received question

Well, it hasn't hit -15 yet, so that's good.

@Geobits Yet

At -8 (I think) it will drop off the front page list, so votes usually don't go past there by much.

(I'm having all sorts of connectivity issues)

Have you tried super glue?

6:47 PM
@ZachGates Several people put time and effort into their solutions and they deserve the rep they've earned for them. They'll lose it if the question gets deleted.
@SvenTheSurfer Yes, and now my hands are stuck to the keyboard.

I didn't realize they would lose their rep @AlexA.

Yep.

I think they only get to keep it if it's deleted after a certain age, either 60 days or 6 months.

6:48 PM
@Geobits I find my name in so many tags, none of which portray me in a particularly positive light. :P

@ZachGates I'm too lazy to figure out what the situation is on your question because your edit summaries consist of "Added x characters to body.", "Deleted y characters from body.", etc.

@AlexA. I have no idea what you mean. I would never presume to impugn the dignity of a moderator.

6:50 PM
I learned a new word!

@rainbolt ?

the

Looks like you need to post one.

What if I wrote a challenge about fishing from two piers?

Adding the tag to Zach's question makes the most sense

6:52 PM

@SvenTheSurfer Which tag? ?

I guess could also be seeing another physician for a second opinion.

That tag has too much f'ing.

6:55 PM
No effing around

Not a single f.

@flawr I started reading The Knife of Never Letting Go. :) Thanks for the recommendation!
@Geobits Surely none given.

Don't call me Shirley.

Shirley Bits

That joke... really doesn't work when written out. Like really really doesn't :(

6:57 PM
Surely it does not.

Surely TempleOS.
2

@AlexA. Nice, how do you like it so far?

I'm only 20 or so pages in but it's good :)

So about 2.95 more books to go=)

Haha
Have you read the whole series?

6:59 PM
Yep. And I pretty liked it.

Which book was your favorite?

I cannot really recall what happened in which book, but I think the story was nicely progressing with new elements coming throughout the whole story.
do you have a goodreads account btw?

No, I don't know what that is
@feersum ^

Yes.

Anyone of you actually used templeos?

7:05 PM
PhiNotPi tried it
He set up a TempleOS virtual machine

wow, I wonder how they cannot see chopper as anything other than a pet ...

?

@ZachGates No no,

What the hell...
@flawr Just made one right now!

7:11 PM
@AlexA. I am trying too.
But got stuck at "TempleOS requires a 64-bit capable processor."

Haha do you not follow the arrows that show what message a ping is in reply to?
I just made a GoodReads account.

What arrows?

@flawr The bent-left arrow at the left side of this message.

Oh. TIL...

Learning is great.

7:15 PM
You can also select the down arrow on the left side of a message to reply to a particular post.

@AlexA. The button is also at the right side of the message when you hover over it. I never use it though.
Usually because I forget.

Oh, me too.

@AlexA. I'd have to move my mouse way too far. Is there no keyboard shortcut?

Not that I know of since it requires selecting a particular message

I remember there was an extension/GreaseMonkey script that did have such a keyboard shortcut, but I don't remember it specifically.

7:19 PM
I am still trying to get templeos working on virtualbox...

@PhiNotPi We need some TempleOS tech support.
@flawr Want to be GoodReads friends?

Can you give me a link to your profile?

"reasons"

7:24 PM
Ok got it, the mighty chat god can let the link vanish, if he pleases.

It is done.

FizzBuzz went live and I'm all capped out. :(

:(

@BetaDecay Didn't we agree to Friday? :P

@Dennis Aw sorry mate. D:
Yeah... I kind of jumped the gun :P

7:32 PM
You jumped the gun?
Ah, finally found the translation^^

@BetaDecay How dare you make Dennis frowny face.

@SvenTheSurfer I know, I know, I should be exiled

7:49 PM
Ok, you mods heard it. Toss him out :)

So tempted to abuse mod powers and suspend Beta for the lolz.

you mean use

> So tempted to ab use mod powers and suspend Beta for the lolz good of all rest of time.

@AlexA. one piece latest manga

Woo, I beat Dennis' Bubblegum entry for FizzBuzz! >_>

8:00 PM
@Geobits Suspension? Nah. But I could lock the question 'til midnight... :P

What is STDERR?

It's where the program whines to you.

It's the stream that normally shows warnings and error messages.
Only relevant if you run the program in a terminal or an interpreter that emulates it.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Erupting Rear Rectally?

@Geobits Take that, program that is just the output... ain't got nothin' on Java and it's fancy byte-saving loops

8:02 PM
So for javascript alert would be ok?

Yea, I think that's a pretty standard "closest alternative to stdout" for js here.

@flawr Dare I ask, is there a front rectally...?

Just got a job offer :D

You're 16, shouldn't you be in school?
I mean, congrats!

I went to school and worked at 15...

8:08 PM
@AlexA. I do go to school. 7-2 every weekday

I was kidding

@ZachGates Congrats, what kind of job if I may ask?=)

7-2? Damn.

And I am complaining when I have to be at uni before 10.

@flawr Part-time at Kroger :P Working as a floater (basically a job in every department)
@Geobits I have to get up around 6 at the latest to make it to the bus /:

8:09 PM
@ZachGates Getting some good money?

I worked as a produce-man as my first job. It was a bunch of fun, and definitely beats fast food.

@flawr 7.25 an hour AND a discount on store items
Which is why I applied there (the discount that is)

@AlexA. No, because then STDERR does not fit anymore.

I sell food & drinks at school and make $$$$, so the cost for me, now, will be much less, while the profit increases

Cash Monday

8:11 PM
@ZachGates I have no idea, is 7.25/h good for your job?

@flawr It's the state minimum wage

It's minimum wage.

Sounds about standard for a floating 16-year old.

City of Seattle minimum wage is $15/hour. :O

Good for a 16-year-old, and hardly anyone else.
2

8:12 PM
But adding in the cash from selling food and drink its pretty nice

yeah
It's good to see someone who understands money this well at such a young age.

If you don't mind me asking: what do you mean by selling food and drink at school? I'm imagining a Mountain Dew black market.

You guys think 7.5 is low? Pft, here in Brazil minimum wage is 0.15/hour
7.25/h

Ironically in switzerland there is no minimum wage.

One sec. On the phone w/ the manager

8:15 PM
But I bet noone works for 0.15/h

@SvenTheSurfer You didn't have a black market for things like that at your school? o.o

@Geobits I cannot comment on the presence of such a market because I was a good kid.

Alright, I go in Monday for a follow-up and job scheduling :D

@flawr In the US the same people most vocally against a minimum wage (libertarian types) are also against the sort of collective bargaining that allows that system to work well.

8:18 PM
@SvenTheSurfer Yep. I sell Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper, Mtn. Dew, bottled water, all kinds of chips (cheetos, fritos, pringles, ruffles, lays, etc.)
Raking in anywhere from $20-$80 a day depending on the day of the week ^

Oh my! That's such a fantastic idea.

@ZachGates You are making me hungry.

@BetaDecay I actually did notice that leftover. Maybe I should've commented on it... :P

@flawr Would you like to buy a bag of chips? :) I can get that to you express mail in 3 business days. :P
@SvenTheSurfer Thanks, haha. I'm considering diversifying into candy, as well. There seems to be a whole lot of money on that market

Hell yes there is. Do it.
Not that I would know.

8:21 PM
I would have to be able to buy in bulk, though

@flawr I got TEMPLES to work by selecting other -> unknown 64-bit when first creating the virtual machine.

At most grocery stores, candy is $1 a piece (which is what I sell it for)

Sure, head over to Costco, Sam's, whatever bulk store you have there :)

Costco
I need $5000 by December (basically 40 days of school)

@PhiNotPi I'm gonna try that.
I cannot find any place where I can choose that option!?

8:24 PM
This is creating a new machine, you see the regular unknown but not unknown 64-bit?

Ah perhaps I have a 32bit virtualbox version=/
Updatin VB right now.

I assume 64-bit is needed.

@PhiNotPi Is that sarcasm I detect?

@PhiNotPi Are you using windows too? When installing VB I cannot even choose 32/64, same installer..

I thought I saw two installers...
Sorry, I'm on my phone and can't help
I botched my dual-boot attempt.

What you see is what you get. The back half of the car might not exist.
5

@PhiNotPi They both have pictures of the back of the car :P

They might not be attached.

I would hate to drive all the way to Florida and see the front of the car not attached to the back
Virginia, actually*

8:49 PM
How do you know that it's a full sized car?

Ok, now you're all just being ridiculous :P

Are we? Are we really? ;)

Are you? o.o

Probably not :o

I would be very disappointed

o.o
Those are awesome

Goodnight, world!
