Posted this in the CGCC Discord and it seems people appreciated it, so I'm posting here too. I'm taking a class on networks right now and I made a little diagram to help me remember the different reasons for packet loss, thought it might be useful to others too

"useful"

Shush, do not bring your knowledge from the CGCC Discord here

It's so useful I pinned it

It's so good having connections in high places

I'd be lost in the multitudes of all the things to do with networking without that diagram

6:26 AM
@user Unless the connection is congested or dies, ofc :p

I mean, I'd be pretty sad if lyxal died, but I wouldn't care much if he became congested :P

@user you forgot one reason: “the host hates you”
That’s when you’d get a 4xx error.
Like 418 I’m a teapot

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

math scatNumbers with variable repeating digits The number \${4...4}1\$ can be written as the expression \$\frac{4 \times 10^{a+1} - 13}{9}\$, where the variable \$a\$ represents the number of \$4\$s. Given such a number, output its corresponding expression. Rules The term doesn't have to be in the simpl...

@TheEmptyStringPhotographer Then it wouldn't be loss though

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

None1Decode Caesar cipher based on a given text I can't think of a better name. This is similar to this challenge, but a lot easier. Read three strings which contain only uppercase letters. The length of the first and second strings are the same. The second string and the third string are encrypted us...

@TheEmptyStringPhotographer Git isn't actually very good

@mousetail takes a look at GitHub, GitLab, BitBucket and countless other popular providers using git ok…
TIL: Microsoft owns GitHub

Microsoft had to contribute to git to make it work with large repos, in much the same way that Facebook had to contribute to hg

3:49 PM
@TheEmptyStringPhotographer That does not mean git is good

4:03 PM
yeah it took ages to get some decent command names

4:18 PM
@mousetail Why would people use git if it wasn’t good?

Why do people use PHP?
Git innovated the idea of distributed source control. Nothing like it existed at the time. But it's interface is needlessly confusing in a lot of ways, but now it's the de facto solution everyone uses it and other tools like Mercurial or Bazar or newer things can't really get traction even if they are better
Git is miles ahead of SVN and similar non-distributed tools though

@mousetail Huh, so I googled this because I'd thought that Mercurial was made before Git, but apparently the former was released on 19 April 2005, while Git was released on 7 April 2005
And the reason for both of those being developed around the same time is that BitKeeper's free version was removed around that time (according to Wikipedia)

If anyone ever campaigns on nationalizing the railroads in the US and doesn't use the phrase "make america freight again" I'm emigrating
