what a joke

OMG CRT SCREEN

@Bob do you only do full backups with nothing in between? that is not incremental or differential, it's just a full backup every week. i.e. copying everything every week.

@JourneymanGeek I'm using one now >.<

@Bob also, What advantage is proper backup software e.g. Acronis, in doing that?

6:14 AM
@HackToHell: I threw out my last one after it started spitting lightning

@JourneymanGeek sick :D

@allquixotic that site where you didn't write a description/warning first, that is superuser at its worst, cutting the links

@barlop: just hover over the link and see the full addie at the bottom?

@JourneymanGeek ah, thanks!

And LOTR is huge ....

6:17 AM
@HackToHell isn't lord of the rings for kids?

and animators!

/me feeds @barlop to a Warg

meh, I am not sure kids will read it

@JourneymanGeek i'll just open maya and deal with warg!

6:18 AM
It's bloody huge

well, the book probably isn't for anybody, kid or adult
so I just meant the film

I have been reading for around 5 hours now and I have finsihed just one book :/

oh, that it is
course I've read the 3 'main' books, the hobbit, the silmarillion....

the hobbit!!!
sounds like you're reading off a school reading list
that probably put me off reading for life
If you like boring books, try To kill a mocking bird
it's a small book

Hobbit was nice
So what real books do you read @barlop
And I was tempted to buy Cryptonomicon

6:22 AM
none really. and that's not good I know.

And you are raging at how bad hobbit is

It is bad! It's one of the few that I read bits of.

cyptonomicon was awesome

before I was put off reading for life

6:23 AM
the hobbit was a kid's book

yeah this was early in school days
I liked narnia.. then they gave us the hobbit

I basically ploughed through my school library ;p

And there is not enough killing in LOTR so yeah, I can be classified as a children's book
@JourneymanGeek i have finished every novel in my library :D

And that was 2 years before I finished school

6:24 AM
@HackToHell: Very little graphic killing
mainly cause it was a story of its time
it does get plenty dark

do you enjoy it when a book spends a few paragraphs talking about what the day is like? It was a beautiful day, the clouds were moving vigorously across the sky, the trees blah blah blah.
do you enjoy that?

If you want bloodshed, and bloody complicated politics, a song of fire and ice is great

GoT tv series is awesome, books were bloody costly

lol
yeah

The Hunger Games books are bloody darn awesome

6:25 AM
and huge!

either of you, i'm curious ^^

And pretty much every book of Michael Crichton has been made into a movie
And his books are really awesome

@barlop: sometimes
then again, I read larry correia...
he writes great pulp novels
though, he seems to be a fan of chekov's gun armoury

6:49 AM

7:39 AM
@Bob a script to zip, then sftp. I am backing up a Windows 2000 data server

8:04 AM
quite the derp

interesting.. that internal usb expansion card, it says it gets power directly from the power supply rather than the motherboard.
I wonder how much of a limitation it is to have a pci card get power only from the motherboard
I have a PCI USB card that gets its power only through the motherboard.

Bob
9:01 AM
@barlop As I said in the first place, daily incremental and weekly full
even if I were to use it only for plain 'file copy' style backups (it can actually backup 'in use' files, via VSS), it has automatic schedulaing and rolling support
far easier than doing it by hand

10:01 AM
@barlop: usually for PCI, not much, I think you're referring to the nzxt one? Its basically a powered hub, rather than a PCI card

Q: Should StackOverflow run a programmers' matrimonial service to prevent marriage-fraud?

Kailash AgrawalMy question may seem a little odd and long,but my grievance is genuine.And I hope the top-moderators and owners of StackOverflow would consider it.This is related to StackOverflow but not a direct programming-related question.I posted it in Meta but seems like people are not available there to an...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH US INDIANS!?????!?!?!?!

@Sathya There are a lot of you guys, thus, higher potential for weirdness ;)

@Sathya: Thats... Special....
Capital S, as in Short Bus

this is seriously depressing shit :|

@Sathya wtf

10:04 AM
offlate, every time I come in here to post about some WTFness I spotted. And more often than not, it's.. ta da an Indian involved

This mixed language Office is driving me nuts... It's really great for answering questions on SU, but horrible for writing actual letters :P

@Sathya maybe the problem is india has a lot of stupid customs, but is basically a tolerant place. That is an unusual mix. In the west we have tolerance but no stupid customs. In the islammic world they have intolerance and stupid customs, so there's not much innovation there. Indians are tolerant but haven't thrown off the stupid traditional customs liek arranged marriage or whatever.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg It looks like you're writing a letter! Would you like help?

> but is basically a tolerant place
far from it

@Bob Yes, please :P

10:16 AM
@Sathya well, who is it intolerant towards?
@Sathya there was this story in the news years ago, about how tolerant india is. Maybe you missed it, or were too young at the time. orkut.com/…

orkut @_@

lolOrkut

the story was in newspapers.
but it is 11 years old.
it wasn't plastered all over the internet.
I read it 11 years ago, not on that webpage. I just searched for the story now and just found it there. But I read it in print at the time.

@barlop newflash: media is ignorant of ground reality

oh so they made the story up?

10:26 AM
no, there's more than meets the eye

o0 why is the star wall full of fights these days ? ;p
@Boris_yo old ;p

A: Do mobile phones have anything to do with brain cancer?

NelliusThis study of 420,000 danes found no correlation between mobile phone use and instances of cancer. We found no evidence for an association between tumor risk and cellular telephone use among either short-term or long-term users. Moreover, the narrow confidence intervals provide evidence that ...

@Boris_yo I saw a program showing people that lived in areas of higher natural backgroudn radiation, lived longer
program was called Horizon I think.
like background radiation from rocks

@barlop And it probably destroys cancer cells too.

10:28 AM
hehehehe

grrr cancer cells need concentrated dosagse of rad to be killed

@HackToHell Buy this one:

wtf
Anyway got to run, this is gonna be one hell of a week :(

@Sathya you should at least recognize that compared to Bangladesh and Pakistan, your neighbours, India is an oasis of tolerance

@barlop What do people tolerate there? Heat?

10:31 AM
@Boris_yo freedom of speech
@Boris_yo freedom of religion

They have freedom to tolerate? That's a bad thing?

it's a good thing
that's my point.

@barlop haven't been to either, can't comment

Ye heard about Walmart's supplier factory's workers killed in Bangladesh?

furthermore if there is a national religion in india, it's hinduism, which even at its most extreme, doesn't seek power over the world, only in India, which I think is fair.

10:34 AM
@barlop Catolicism seeks power over the world?

@Boris_yo no or barely. but some forms of islam do.

Alright, now I got a proper letter template. Only took me 4 test prints to get it right \o/

And every religion touts itself as the most righteous of all.

@Boris_yo hinduism doesn't even seek to spread in the world.. hindus just go about their thing quietly.
@Boris_yo ideologies compete, so what.
Hinduism doesn't actually tout itself at all. You never even hear of it
maybe privately they say they're right but so what. they're welcome to. If you take offense at that then that's a problem with you, and you should be more tolerant.

Found similar statement in newspaper today:

Q: Does a cell phone emit 1000 times more radiation when its battery is low?

ChristopherFound this gem on G+: The rest seems all extremely circumstantial except the very last item. The 'radiation' they're talking about, I'm assuming, is electromagnetic radiation - which would be weaker by a low battery, not stronger. Any evidence showing that cell phones emit more radiation whil...

10:40 AM
@Boris_yo I wouldn't share anything that's written in Comic Sans with someone I love
3

@OliverSalzburg Comic being emphasized?

@barlop I think the problem's also that we have a halfassed adoptation of western culture
and hinduism, like the honey badger, dosen't give a crap
We don't want to convert people or anything. ;p
The issue is really that a lot of people get ideas about romance from movies
without being in a culture where romance is, well, socially acceptable enough to talk about
So.. people make stupid choices
Ironically, one 'advantage' of the old school matchmaking system was quality control
there was a process, you'd actually get to know the person to an extent
You sure as hell wouldn't marry a halfassed java programmer.
(like seriously, You love the guy. NOT THE FACT THAT HE PROGRAMS IN JAVA. YOU IDIOTIC GIRL.) ;p
I have a realistic view of romance. It sucks
Sometimes you get lucky and find someone you can live with.
most of the time, if you're an indian? It ends badly, cause you arn't emotionally equipped for that crap
Ouch, that was a rant. It was a Rant. I shut up now ;p

Bob
11:07 AM
@OliverSalzburg :D

@JourneymanGeek should have sent that Karen across to The Comms Room >:D

@tombull89: eh, probably ;p

Bob
@tombull89 shudder

I didn't know the young 'lady' was quite that nutty.
also, I don't have any popcorn.

Bob
You should always have some popcorn handy.

11:12 AM
between that and the MSO post @Sathya linked? I'd need QUITE a lot

@JourneymanGeek Oh? Is this recent?

Its just so many different levels of stupid ;p

what

WAT

@barlop religious extremists are everywhere, and Hinduism has it's fair share of them. Again, you've a 5000-mile perspective of things where everything is sunny and bright. Things here are very different, and you probably don't hear about them. I wouldn't Indians are tolerant, nonchalance is better suited
@tombull89 I'm still recovering from the WTFness
that must goto gemsfromstackexchange

Q: 18 dead insects between my laptop screen

user222322I'm stuck with 18 dead insects between my laptop screen. It appeared to be thunder-flea's or storm bugs. ( Thysanoptera ) This happened during the extended warranty period of my Toshiba Satellite L505. Toshiba won't repair this for warranty, they ask me to pay € 450 to replace the screen. Then I ...

Its hard to believe

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, I VtC'd it :P

seconded. Its still mindblowing, ESPECIALLY since I took apart an LCD panel once and its pretty damned hard for anything to get in

Bob
I get the feeling it may not be inside the panel itself, just the outer plastic cover
$4/year for a VPS

Q: Files on web server can be found without extensions

user2155821I have a page about.php. I can access this page by either example.com/about.php or example.com/about and even example.com/about/. The latter does something strange. It treats the about.php (which is in public_html) as if it is index.php inside an about folder. I know this because when I open it t...

2:53 PM
@jokerdino pretty much, but if it's asking about apache on Ubuntu, you can keep it on AU
definitely too casual for SF; if it goes anywhere, it should go to SU. or just stay put.

I don't know much about php or server.

Bob
@jokerdino The Windows 8 en-US female TTS voice

And I can keep it with other crap on AU.
@allquixotic Is Apache off topic on SU?

Bob
@jokerdino Depending on context, Apache httpd config can be on-topic on any of the trilogy sites :P
