Got it, thanks anyway

unzip 3.5.1.zip
tar cvf 3.5.1.tar 3.5.1/
xz -9 --best 3.5.1.tar
if it doesn't compress well, it's probably because WP ships with lots of images
there should be a "wordpress for people with horrid internet connections" with all the images compressed with jpeg at 0 quality ;)

I recall having huge discrepancies with .rar and .7z when compressing some files

Not bad

better :)
LZMA2 isn't actually all that great when it comes to compressing high entropy files like images, mp3s, etc., I think PPMD is best for that, but omg the runtime X_X

There should be a organization-wide QoS policy being enforced. Or a gun on my desk and a license to kill.

7:02 PM
PPMD can shave kilobytes off of megabytes of extremely high entropy x264 video data, whereas every other compressor in the universe will make it larger

But I heard we own an entire class B network, I suppose we have a tiny little bit too many machines.

but if you are willing to wait for PPMD to compress and decompress, you could have downloaded the extra data in that time anyway
PPMD is for like, i don't know, exchanging data by calling out hexadecimal values over the voice link to an astronaut

PPMD? Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy?
Physico-chimie des Polymères et des Milieux Dispersés?

Prediction by Partial Matching
Prediction by partial matching (PPM) is an adaptive statistical data compression technique based on context modeling and prediction. PPM models use a set of previous symbols in the uncompressed symbol stream to predict the next symbol in the stream. PPM algorithms can also be used to cluster data into predicted groupings in cluster analysis. Theory Predictions are usually reduced to symbol rankings. The number of previous symbols, n, determines the order of the PPM model which is denoted as PPM(n). Unbounded variants where the context has no length limitations also exist and are denote...

@allquixotic I was getting there ¬¬

You know what really gives me a warm fuzzy inside? it's that "seemingly useless" computer science research in the 70s and 80s comes around to being essential for the internet and the digital era. Imagine being in 1970 where computers that filled an entire room would have mere kilobytes of memory, and the runtime of even the Deflate algorithm was unacceptably high for the processors of the era.
And some guy at a blackboard is figuring out how to compress data using an algorithm with an "obscene" runtime. Well, wait 20 years, and suddenly that runtime isn't so bad anymore
Gotta love science ... its use isn't apparent for some time

I really hate it when Ebay sellers aren't on top of their game. "Oh sorry, I was on holidays for a week and then I didn't check my bank account for another week after that. I'll get on it ASAP! But this is no reason for such a tone!!!"

the first paper on PPM was released in 1984. 1984. Surely this is long before they had even conceived of the computing power of a Pentium

@OliverSalzburg I surely hate when an entire country is banished from Ebay, and a bit more when I happen to live in that country

If I ever think of something really cool that is practically impossible because it would take up too much CPU time / RAM / disk / network, I'll try and develop it, at least in concept, even without the practical ability to implement it, in the hopes that someone's laptop in 20 years will be able to run it ;p

Not that I ever used Ebay, but knowing your country is filled with so many SOBs that a sitewide ban is enforced. Is like being in Russia as it comes down to malwares.
@allquixotic Testing must be a real PITA.

7:12 PM
@ruda.almeida :( um... are you sure the reason your country is b&ed from ebay is that they have a lot of bad people who abuse the service? or is it some kind of trade embargo?

@ruda.almeida Ouch
Well, it's my fault for buying from someone who doesn't use PayPal really

@OliverSalzburg FWIW, there's no reason to ever use that tone to begin with ;) especially if they have your money / your product... you want them to cooperate with you

@allquixotic Well, I made that statement up. It was a mix of previous experiences which I used to extrapolate the latest purchasing situation

7:41 PM
@allquixotic: Hi, I did it as per wiki... bumblebee. But how can i know GPU is switched off ? glxinfo is same as in both preinstall and post install case
ok. 'sensors' shows temperature is decreased by 10 C.

@AbidRahmanK look at optirun glxinfo; it should be different

yeah.. it is nvidia now..
but it is intel for glxinfo before and after installation

@AbidRahmanK Right. glxinfo will always show Intel unless you wrap it in optirun. When you use optirun, Bumblebee starts an X server in the background and tells the Nvidia card to render to that, then copies the resulting image data to your Intel's X server.
The background X server will time out and kill itself and then shut off the Nvidia card when you aren't using optirun programs.
As root, run cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch to see the current status of Nvidia card.

in powertop, there is a section idlestats>gpu. it shows a RC6, what does it mean?
0000:01:00.0 OFF

Right. "OFF" means the Nvidia GPU is literally off. Powered down.
Now run optirun gnome-terminal &

7:50 PM
but in powertop GPU is still powered on and running for 40%

Then run cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch again while that second gnome terminal is running
@AbidRahmanK RC6 is a power-saving feature. Some info here
the official docs for it are here
> The final power savings technology from Intel happens while the system is asleep.
This is another technology where the voltage is adjusted down. For RC6 the voltage is
adjusted very low, or very close to zero. So let’s say we adjust the voltage 1.3V to 0.4
V with everything being equal we have reduced power by over 1000 percent (this is
done by dividing the V2
terms (1.32
/ 0.42
)).

one more question: is there any tool to estimate how long a battery will long ?

@AbidRahmanK your estimated battery run time should be displayed by gnome...
powertop, too
you may have to run powertop as root.

so GPU section shown in powertop, is it nvidia or intel iGP?

@AbidRahmanK I don't know. You'd have to show the full output. But most likely it's the IGP, because the Nvidia GPU is reported as OFF (unless you are still running that second gnome terminal with optirun)
10 C difference in temperature is huge, though; that's obviously the Nvidia GPU being turned off

8:00 PM
ok. fine. let me test it more. anyway thank you for your time.
that was a great help

@AbidRahmanK you were a helpful guinea pig for me; now I know that Bumblebee works on Fedora 18 and I can do it on my own system ;-)
don't forget to accept answer in your question ;)

already done..

:D
feel free to come back if you have any other questions hehe
we are always here. and very tech enthusiast :D

gud nit... it is already 2 am here.

oh wow
I'm sorry, but this question is much too localized for SuperUser. The answer to this question is very likely going to help only you, because of how specific it is to these actual parts, and the prices that they are being sold to you for. Feel free to drop by chat -- this question would be on-topic and appropriate there -- but I'm going to have to vote to close this question for the reason stated above. Sorry. — allquixotic 57 secs ago

@Sathya as india is not as fun to live in as the west, many indians/hindus leave, and come to the west, and as far as minorities go, they are very well behaved. From my experience, some are definitely weird.. I had a bad experience with a south indian, i'd agree with you re weirdness.. but one can only be weird if one's society tolerates it. I think my view that they have old customs with tolerance, might go with your view that they half adopt western values. We might be saying the same
thing there but you just dispute the tolerance aspect. But there has to be some tolerance to tolerate the weirdness. And if they were so intolerant, they wouldn't be such good citizens when they go elsewhere, whereas those from pakistan or yemen or whetever, like to blow themselves up, and convert everybody to their religion.

9:08 PM
furthermore where they are intolerant, it may only be in their religio-nation state. they want their hindu/bharat/indian nation state to be indian/hindu, (I don't think that's unreasonable, they only have one state), but they don't want the world to be indian/hindu(that'd be real intolerance). That is a lot better than many of the guys coming over from pakistan that want the world e.g. the place they go to, to conform to their worldview.

Wow, my girlfriends computer does not want to automatically go to sleep.
This is driving me nuts
Actually, it will go to sleep, but it is woken up again right after

@OliverSalzburg windows?

@allquixotic Yes, 8
I have already tried/done so many things to fix it. No dice

@OliverSalzburg uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer" for the ethernet and wifi?

@allquixotic Did that
I removed the Kernel Mode Debug Network driver
I checked powercfg /energy and powercfg /requests
I completely stopped the srv service
Checked all the energy saving settings

9:16 PM
@OliverSalzburg did you disable ErP in the BIOS?

@allquixotic No. I'll check it out
...in the morning ;D
What is it?

@OliverSalzburg uhh, sounds like a problem, if your gf can't get to sleep, you won't have a very fun night, you should probably fix this now

Well, you can send it to sleep manually. That works fine. But if it goes to sleep automatically, it wakes up again instantly

@OliverSalzburg sleeptile dysfunction

I've set it to go to sleep after 1 minute for testing purposes earlier.
I love how harry got the bounty even on this one: superuser.com/questions/532993/…

9:21 PM
@OliverSalzburg does harry tend to get lots of bounties?

@allquixotic Well, it seems like those are the only questions he's going for. And he gets the bounties more often than not
> 485 Earned bounties for 34,275 reputation

@OliverSalzburg O_O
that's crazy
i have like 3-4

Check the featured questions, he's likely to have an answer on every one ;D

basically a rep ho

It seems like he often "simply" does good research online
But, well, it's all fair game. As long as the person gets the answer

9:24 PM
professional googler :D

What I don't get is, he has the top spot in terms of reputation and by going primarily for bounties he's earning a lot more every day. What is he getting out of it? I've never seen him in the "community". In fact, I faintly remember he called SU a "forum" once on meta.
@JourneymanGeek: It's a fact of life on this forum that any question or answer may be edited by anyone having enough reputation. From my point of view this is somewhat what happened to you here, so it's not against forum rules. — harrymc Apr 5 at 13:49
Outrageous!

@OliverSalzburg Boo!
honestly I get the most out of chat, though I've become interested in meta a bit more lately, and certain questions hit my "triggers" that I come with a lot of preacquired knowledge and want to share it

Also, I'm jealous of all his rep! WTF! I WANT IT NAOW
@allquixotic Yeah, chat really makes up a huge part of the community aspect of the site for me as well
Sweet, the Ebay seller messages back. He got the money and card is on its way here \o/

@OliverSalzburg Card? Greeting card? Graphics card? Calling card?

9:39 PM
@allquixotic GFX

@OliverSalzburg Ooh. Now you have to tell me what model ;D

Point of View NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 (3072 MB)

oooooo. high power. kinda ;P
why Fermi?
why not Kepler

Well, I have a 460v2 right now and I wanted an upgrade. But I also didn't want to spend too much
This cost me 160€

@OliverSalzburg ah, okay.
so the 680 was out of your price range

9:42 PM
@allquixotic Yeah. I also read up on a few comparisons to like the 660 IIRC. But that would have cost me over 200
Oh, it was the 680 I compared against actually

@OliverSalzburg I bought one of these today :X

I always wonder about the huge price differences between makers of the same card (so to speak). Like a POV 580 vs an EVGA 580. The latter always costing quite a bit more

@allquixotic I love the Surface Pro!

@OliverSalzburg do you have one? :P

9:46 PM
@allquixotic I bought 2 a while ago. Actually another Superuser from the US did :)
They were 64 GB models though. We needed them for a client (who later didn't want them anymore :P)
So we ended up selling one on Ebay. Boss kept the other one
But I got to play with it for a while. So much fun

@OliverSalzburg how was the hardware construction quality? as amazing as they say?

@allquixotic Yes

is it really that groundbreaking hardware-wise?

But, well, it was brand new and I only used it for a short time. I don't know how well it'll stay in that shape
@allquixotic Well, that's hard to judge. I mean, it's almost more of a laptop than a tablet. Just because of the size (depth wise) and the weight

I actually really enjoy the concept of a device with a strong, solid-feeling aesthetic, good tactile response, etc

9:50 PM
The display is awesome though and the digital pen support is excellent

cool :D
I'm okay with it being more of a laptop than a tablet
for something that i want to hold in my hand for hours unsupported by a desk or my lap, I have a Nexus 7
which is also much lighter and longer lasting

Sadly, we didn't have one of those snap-on keyboards, but the on-screen keyboard is really nice. Especially the split one

@OliverSalzburg I'm going to buy a type cover (the one with physical keys) at a retail store soon before the unit is set to arrive

When I was drawing on it, I simply connected a USB keyboard, that was fine as well. The benefit of having a full-size USB port
The cameras suck by today's standards, if that matters to you. It's enough for Skype (or other video chats) but not for taking pictures
But then again, I wouldn't want to take any pictures with it anyway, I guess

@OliverSalzburg yeah -- my phone is much easier to maneuver into a place to take a picture, and the camera on my current phone is already pretty good; my next phone's camera is going to be awesome

9:56 PM
@allquixotic Indeed
I was really surprised how well "the desktop" worked with touch

I guess I'm about to find out. In a week. :P

And all those "stupid" Windows 8 features suddenly make a lot of sense on a device like that. It's a joy to use really

@OliverSalzburg further proof that you simply cannot design a UI that is ideal for both a keyboard/mouse and touch
unity fails, kde plasma fails, android fails, win8 fails
even apple

@allquixotic Well, my thought was, maybe it's an advantage to have the same LAF on both the desktop and the surface if you actually use both. Because it's simply the same interface

the only people who've succeeded at selling both touch devices and point and click have been those who design completely different user experiences for the two and don't push both UIs on the same device

9:59 PM
But I have too little experience with either platform to really know

@OliverSalzburg I've been using Win8 long enough on the desktop to know -- without Start8 to make it act like Win7, it's not usable on the desktop, no matter how well you understand/like the UI

If I have some spare time, I might take an image of this installation and perform an upgrade, just to see how it'll feel.
I've never used 8 on a multi-screen setup

@OliverSalzburg I like that 8 lets you have a taskbar on the secondary monitor :D huge improvement

@allquixotic I had that feature through UltraMon until a few days ago when I disabled it (because it didn't work 100% of the time)
And the additional taskbars never had the full native behavior :(
So, yeah, I'm sure I would appreciate that feature
I'm wondering about all the usage features with the corners of the screen. I know they implemented these "dead corners" to help in multi-screen setups, but I wonder how well it'll work

@OliverSalzburg I disabled dead corners =P
home time, yay
BBL (and goodnight if you're going to bed)

10:33 PM
anybody know how to solve this?
i have a text of 174 chars
the chars are in a matrix 6 x 29
and i need to get all the permutations of the rows
so the first one is:
1
5
6
2
3
4
so, nothing is changed
the rows are :
fireesweoosadecefebdsinhwufno
etntiwaonhhrhifdcanurewodeaun
oaasfouleghthnreeeceteaotdpar
iroonrhodiheulsrfehecsdrwahhl
nmtrpntthofdeendtedgdemorhneh
ttapahtcehoedaherroeweeiswhdw
it's gonna be 6! permutations
so... 720 permutations
altogether

A: Check if Control is Textbox within TabControl

ricardordzDude, you can do this via jQuery: Forget about this sh*t, never see that you were talking about winForms. My bad! Best regards!

:P
@Sathya that should be on Gems
@allquixotic I was actually looking for a way to get dead corners on 7
I imagine it's more so you can do the hot corner crap, but it is useful
I'm used to snapping my mouse to a corner to hit the start menu, or close button
dual display screws with that

@Bob I'm programmed to hit the Windows Key on my kbd for that

Bob
:P
I do a weird mix of both
if I happen to be using the mouse while eating, holdinga phone, etc., then usually no winkey

@Bob eww that's dirtee

@Bob I tried an application for that once... don't remember the name though
Pretty sure someone mentioned it here in fact

Bob
@Oliver might've been DDMM. I mentioned it here :P

11:18 PM
@Bob Indeed! :D

Bob
@allquixotic what?
(I'm on mobile, so no message specific replies here!)

Bob
eh
