What's the opposite of relatively? ie. when discussing the expenditure, you can talk about it relatively (percent of income) or you can talk about it as xxxx - simply a lower amount and not a percent or fraction.

Thanks

Aug 28, 2017 14:16
Yep
Aug 28, 2017 14:08
Thanks. I think I'd settled on causative as the correct word. Somehow isn't quite what I'm after but I don't have the linguistic ability to describe it better.

Hello all.

Can anyone tell me the correct term for describing sentences where the objects are having things done to them? Is it 'passive'?

May 10, 2017 12:23
it's the plural of person, but it's referring to a single group as opposed to 'peoples of the world'
May 10, 2017 12:21
I don't know. My brain has stopped working...

I know you would say "a man's" or "men's"
May 10, 2017 12:19
peoples'

Hello. This is more of a stylistic question but, in a title with capitalization of 'main' words, should the second part of a hyphenated word have the first letter capitalised?

'...Enabling Visual Note-Taking...'

or

'Enabling Visual Note-taking'

Thanks

Apr 10, 2017 14:16
Hello room. Can you tell me the convention for capitalising the first letter (or not) new nouns, appropriated from proper nouns such as 'Photoshopper' or, I guess, googler / Googler.

Thanks
Feb 12, 2017 16:08
Thank you very much. Certainly enough depth for me to understand / read a few key terms
Feb 12, 2017 15:58
Thank you. A wonderful explanation
Feb 12, 2017 15:55
As an ESL teacher, we usually teach 'question words' as their own category as opposed ot confusing students with technicalities of adverbs but I was interested.
Feb 12, 2017 15:55
yep. i did / do kow that :)
Feb 12, 2017 15:54
Yep. Sorry. 11pm on a Sunday...
Feb 12, 2017 15:53
and it seems to function as a noun, to my mind, "you went where?" [angry voice]
Feb 12, 2017 15:49
how about when used at the start of a sentence eg. 'where are you from?' 'when ere you born?' 'why are you so beautiful?' etc?
Feb 12, 2017 14:34
Hello. Are 'wh-' question words really adverbs? They seem different to my little Sunday-brain.
Feb 12, 2017 14:03

Feb 12, 2017 12:52

Jan 17, 2017 12:02
True!
Jan 17, 2017 12:02

Jan 17, 2017 12:01
I'm so embarrassed to say that I'd always felt the same about fewer / less.

Hi. I added a new drive to my Win 10. I've initialised it in computer manager but it has a different drive icon. Does it matter? Have I got a wrong setting somewhere?

Thanks

Feb 3, 2017 15:20
Can anyone tell me the correct term in this sentence, it's describing an iOS application where clicking on any of the three buttons takes the user to another, well, if it were a website, it would be called a page.

"With the application loaded, users are given the choices of logging in, creating and account, posting an add or searching. All four of these options will take the users to another ..."

I was going to call it a window. What's the appropriate term? Thanks
