Ski lodge cook, on-mountain can definatly refer to a cook who works up there on de mountain.
@Psycogeek You got it. Biols around 203 At about 7k
Those were fun times
@RichManson water boils at 100 in the UK...
not only are your american cars less efficient so are your mountains and physics! ;)
in austrialia water boils at -100 c
sounds legit
@Burgi Is the UK that high?
No wonder Brits are always have their noses in the air :P
I thought higher up there is less air so combustion engines should run less efficient up high.
09:07
@RichManson everyone else uses metric ;p
@Psycogeek in australia the bubbles flow to the bottom...
You guys are talking 100c. We still use F here unless your a scientist
crazy americans
hm. Ergo. Everyone everywhere else is a scientist
yea brits still get a C for thier measuring system, and americans get a well deserved F
brits are mad scientists, cause they mix measures.
09:09
@JourneymanGeek I don't believe that one. I do know water circles down the drain counter clockwise but I am not buying the bubbles theory.
I heard south of the equator that dogs also circle counter clockwise to make a bed to lay down
@RichManson next you're going to tell me you don't believe in drop bears
@JourneymanGeek Um what? When they fall out of a tree they drop? LOL
its all a lie, the reason a AU toilet circles in the other direction, is because they make left handed masticators
@RichManson DROP BEARS MAN
THE SCOURGE OF THE GUM FORESTS!
All British scientist look like Beeker on the Muppets
09:12
Do you know more tourists are killed by dropbears than hoopsnakes every year?
but the real problem is the scorpitrons
especially when you cross the line
@JourneymanGeek <------- Lossed it. Cut him off. He had too much
and aussies tend to consume massive amounts of marmite to keep both at bay
tourists should rub a little behind their ears...
Ok we have animals you never even heard of like Hoodlesnorts, Dingfingles, and Fingledorks
and wombats shit cubes
09:15
And don't forget the Hobslobbles they are the worst.
he's talking the truth
And their cousins the Hibsnibbles
you are just being silly
Big teeth, little paws
09:18
A drop bear (sometimes dropbear) is a hoax in contemporary Australian folklore featuring a predatory, carnivorous version of the koala
Oh please I knew it was a hoax
lol
also dropbears are a running joke
thats what they want you to believe
Koalas are not as cute as they look, you dont see them domesticated
I've heard of wombats
A drop bear (sometimes dropbear) is a hoax in contemporary Australian folklore featuring a predatory, carnivorous version of the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus). This imaginary animal is commonly spoken about in tall tales designed to scare tourists. While koalas are typically docile herbivores (and notably, not bears), drop bears are described as unusually large and vicious marsupials
Sounds ficious ...... if they were real
LOL
> The wombat lives across the seas,
Among the far Antipodes.
He may exist on nuts and berries,
Or then again, on missionaries;
His distant habitat precludes
Conclusive knowledge of his moods,
But I would not engage the wombat
In any form of mortal combat.
> (Ogden Nash)
What do domesticated Kualas do?? How do they act? Eat your shoes and chew on the furniture? LOL
annnnnnnnnnnnd back at work
@RichManson have you ever pissed off a stoner?
09:24
They sit around smoking eucalyptus leaves in hookas.
morning @noitsbecky
@djsmiley2k hi
@Psycogeek I didn't know they could be pissed off. I thought they were just perpetually hungry.
needs braces, to fix that overbite
09:29
further proof that the web has seen everything.
your overthinking it
to upload a picture you use powershell :-)
unless you got a mac, then it's I-tunes
Oh, I haven't done a whole lot of messing with that. Have to look up info on it.
09:39
if your on linux then you use Sudo :-)
sudo paste kuola.jpg
:P
when ben comes in and writes a powershell script to do it, he is gonna ruin that joke.
@RichManson thats a panda
@JourneymanGeek You said your rep was accumulated through other stack sites right
it only counts rep over 100
09:53
What you talkin bout willis
Anything over 100 is included on every stack site?
@RichManson basically if you have enough rep on one site, you get a 100 point "bonus" on other accounts
but I have 98K on SU, 8K on MSE, 5K on SF and SR ....
So my chat rep is basically my network wide reputation
10:43
why doesn't workbench bundle the latest version of mysqldump?
erm
workbench and server are seperate packages no?
it seems server has been upgraded, but workbench hasn't?
Oh right, yeah, exactly what you said!!
i upgraded workbench and i still get the issue...
stupid oracle
they should fix their free tools!
Yay, got my Dell order confirmation
Bob
Bob
10:59
@noitsbecky \o/
Quite why they take 7 working days to deliver an in-stock pre-built machine I don't know... Most retailers do it in one.
@Bob :-D
@noitsbecky because scotland + dell
I'm quite excited. The only downside I've seen mentioned in reviews is lack of SD card slot and weight
@Burgi Scotland gets same-day delivery from Amazon and next day from just about everyone else...
:35191457
Bob
Bob
wait no, it was a couple days
Lol
I couldn't even get next year on my Dell monitor
Bob
Bob
11:01
@noitsbecky tbf the delay there is in the order, not the delivery :P
@Bob Still Dell's fault!
@noitsbecky how is the job/house hunting going?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic @JourneymanGeek the Anker hub seems to work okay
@Burgi been distracted by laptop hunting. But now I finally have one I might have actual free time to do what I'm supposed to be doing...
Bob
Bob
@noitsbecky House/job hunting? :P
11:03
@Bob I see you have a HP Envy backup. Also odd gradual decrease in speed
Bob
Bob
@noitsbecky My old hub would disconnect the HDD after some 40 GB transferred...
But given the size/duration of the transfer probably just due to HDDs normal decrease. Guess I've never copied enough data in Windows for it to mattet
Bob
Bob
@noitsbecky Also it's SMR soooo :P
@Bob heh, and people complain you can't copy large amounts of data to an SMR drive in one go!
Mind you the seagate external probably has more desktop optimised firmware than the first gen server ones
Bob
Bob
btw, @allquixotic, they're ST8000AS0002 the archive ones apparently
@Bob eh?
You mean your external?
Turns out Bluetooth Low Energy is very low energy. Who'd have thought?
Bob
Bob
@noitsbecky ya

Q: Windows 10 Home License: what exactly do you get for $120?

Vladislav RastrusnyWindows Home license costs something like $120. It's not much, I think, but what do you get for those $120? As I remember, Microsoft announced, that there will be no more Windows 11 after Windows 10 and that Windows will just receive rolling updates again and again. But it seems, that it would b...

I closed this as opinion based - kiiinda wondering if there's a reasonable dissenting opinion ;p
I don't think it's opinion based
It's quite clear from the license document what you get for your license fee.
Whether or not/how good future updates might be may be a matter of opinion, I guess.
@allquixotic Easier said than done?
Bob
Bob
11:29
@JourneymanGeek It's not really opinion based, IMO. But also not a particularly great question. Hm. It would actually be alright as a semi-canonical, but as it currently is it reads more like someone overly skeptical.
(also, I totally threw this in a room with people who probably have the powers to reopen or flag it on purpose)
I'm impressed how a gaming laptop from 2016 with five times the peak wattage of my 2011 laptop can last longer and do more on a smaller battery, and also outperform a high-end 2015 desktop, though not necessarily at the same time.
@Bob which leads me to wonder - is it worth making drastic edits to save the question?
@Bob Yeah it reads more like a rant tbh. But can still be answered non-opinionatedly
Yay I get £800 from the government if I buy a house -_-
@noitsbecky With Great Power (usage) Comes Great Scalability?
11:38
@djsmiley2k With 14nm comes great scalability :-D
Mind you going from 32nm to 14nm only really reduced power consumption by about 40%, far less than the reduction of TDP from 37w to 15w would suggest.
Can't wait till Vega makes the GPU market competitive again... having to choose between hardwired Optimus or G-Sync because NVidia's too lazy to implement Freesync is becoming a pain
@noitsbecky For a Moment I imagined it was the fans making the difference
then I imagined a fan eating that much power
@djsmiley2k It's not hard to imagine, I have fans that eat 8w each, and they weren't particularly high-end
(Also, new laptop has three fans, old laptop has one, so not likely to be the fans :-P)
@noitsbecky hmmm maybe then
one crap one vs 3 high end lower power ones?
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k ...physics
@djsmiley2k lol
11:48
:D
Well this old one certainly is crap
Though that might be as much the fault of the BIOS as the fan itself.
Fan never spins above 40%, even when the CPU is at 99'c and thermal throttling except when the BIOS crashes and it ramps to 100% by default.
@JourneymanGeek they need to remove the price bit of the question imho
Sadly having an obscure, niche, expensive Japanese laptop means there's not a huge mass of angry high profile gamers out there making a noise whenever anything is bugged
Eh I shouldn't be moaning about Dell's delivery time, after all I'm getting an incredibly good spec laptop for a ludicrously low price.
@noitsbecky viao?
@JourneymanGeek I'd love a Viao but they don't sell in the UK :-(
Viao Z Flip has been one of my top choices for a convertible/tablet/flippy thing

@noitsbecky ...they make laptops?
@Bob Uhh, yeah?
Bob
Bob
TIL
They've been doing it for ages... I've seen people with Fujitsu laptops since my first PC in 2000-ish
Heck, my first PC was a Fujitsu (desktop)
I melted my processor the day I first got it
Why does this look suspiciously like the 60/120Hz comparisons of yesteryear?
Bob
Bob
12:02
@noitsbecky 60/120 comparisons with still images are just ... dumb
Take screenshot, blur half of screen, label it as the lower framerate. Simples.
@Bob You'll love the 5ms vs. 1ms response time comparisons with still images on the same page :-D
12:56
urgh
user getting locked out continously by a workstation
granted it hasn't been rebooted but everything else has been checked so far, and there's nothing running that should be trying to login to the system it's failing on :/
And I thought my laptop was chunky
@djsmiley2k By a workstation or on a workstation?
Bob
Bob
@noitsbecky that the new one?
@Bob Naw, just some reviews Im reading to distract myself for the next five days :-P
@noitsbecky something on the workstation is locking it out, not the user login attempt tho
checked mapped drives - they all auth ok
no services run as the user, no sch. tasks
@djsmiley2k So user is logged in OK on a workstation but some background process on the same workstation is is sending invalid credentials?
OK WTF, the Haswell gen Alienware 15 had an option for a 4K touchscreen? :-(
Damn edit time limit
13:16
@noitsbecky Looks that way, yes
@noitsbecky its exactly what it is.
@Bob like those 1080p vs 4k comparisons? ;p
@noitsbecky >_>

Wow, that's fast and modern...

@LPChip I posted it on another site. The moderator sent me here. This sometimes get very confusing. — Shadow_Sphynx 39 mins ago
whuuuut?
much confuse!
Was wondering why my Steam downloads were so slow... download region was still set to Thailand -_-
Oddly enough it started at 80Mbps for about 10 minutes then suddenly dropped to 10Mbps
Maybe that's how long it took to find/connect to the Thailand servers :-P
erm, Why?
were you in Thailand?
14:36
@djsmiley2k About a year ago, yeah :-P

Can anyone tell me the correct term in this sentence, it's describing an iOS application where clicking on any of the three buttons takes the user to another, well, if it were a website, it would be called a page.

"With the application loaded, users are given the choices of logging in, creating and account, posting an add or searching. All four of these options will take the users to another ..."

I was going to call it a window. What's the appropriate term? Thanks
@Jdoh screen?
um... maybe....
another view?
I've used 'part of the application' but it seems a little clumsy
@djsmiley2k Did it still work?
15:25
@Jdoh I think window is right in that context.
thanks @Leathe

We call them windows even in iOS?
Thanks :)
This might be a better link for that actually: developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/WindowsViews/…
If it's an explanation to your average user, either window or view should be fine to describe what's happening.
16:03
@djsmiley2k am I supposed to be?
I'd probably just say "screen"
It's not really a window or screen but screen seems to be what's used most commonly: "Go to the settings screen" "On the home screen" etc.
On Android the technical term might be an "activity"
16:33
Any powershell gurus out there?

^^^ @BenN
I think that's BenN's alt account.
Hi, what's up?
Was that in response to me?
Yep :) How can I help?
16:35
Cool... I use PS remoting all the time to perform tasks across a range of computers
I spend a large part of most days doing it in fact, however I am curious, when I start a process remotely, is there anyway to make that process interactive for the user logged onto the console.
I would go with psexec
I currently do that with psexec from sysinternals, however I am wondering if there is a powershell way?
It's possible to do it with some nasty P/Invoke calls, but psexec will be way easier
nm, I guess that answers that
@DavidPostill yup perfectly.
16:38
ok, that is what I wanted to know, psexec does it fine, but that is pretty much the last function I had not replaced with powershell.
If necessary, you can copy a file across to the remote computer with PS
The non-psexec way would involve getting the active console session ID, looking for a winlogon process in that session, duplicating its token (which requires assigning and enabling SeTcbPrivilege), creating a process with that user in a given desktop, then disposing of all those native resources appropriately
Hmm
Go to hell you fool — Apurva Nandan 57 secs ago
@BenN You can also remotely download it using the PS wget
@DavidPostill Flagged
the files I need to execute are apps already on the machine, no need to copy them.
16:41
Ah, nice :)
Thx. I flagged too. The question needs to be closed but he isn't getting my hints ...
ok, thank yuu
In case the flagging was due to the potential misuse, it is because we have an application that uses local per seat licensing with no way to manage across the whole network. The licenses are often transferred between computers. so rather than go hit each one individually, I sweep through, launch the license utility, screenshot it and save it back to a network share.
that way I know who has the ball per se, and who needs it removed to stay in compliance.
Oh, I didn't flag you; I was talking about the rude comment somebody else left; you're fine :)
@DavidPostill cool profile picture!
@DavidPostill tinest bit snippy sounding but...
his reaction was a little over the top
16:46
oh, ok, thought someone misinterpreted it as me building a worm or something...
No problem :) You can mouse over a message to see what it was a reply to
For example, mousing over my "flagged" message shows that it was in response to the comment linked by David
@Sabre You won't b e the first (I believe @Rahul2001 was trying to write virus's).
@Rahul2001 Thanks
@djsmiley2k For educational purposes only!
Tis ok :D
You nailed down polymorphism yet?
16:48
Reminds me of the EICAR infection I had to deal with Educational virus
@Sabre I did not spread this around. But circumventing anti-malware is surprisingly easy
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, maybe I was a little blunt ;p
old help desk technician thought it would be funny to mail a zipped eicar file to whole address list. Annoying to some, not well received by some others in management.
@Sabre oops. Did he still have a job afterwards?
that is why I said old helpdesk technician, was not his one and only, but it was a contributing factor.
16:50
lul
And I agree it is not hard in general if you know your environment, but I put malware writers up there with spammers, sort of same stature as chewing gum in a parking lot...
@Sabre but... chewing gum is fun!
@Rahul2001 Unless you live in Singapore ...
(I'm not old enough to drive, so IDK about the whole parking lot part)
@DavidPostill Still fun, but bad consequences
Thanks folks, all I needed at the moment, much appreciated.

Fire at fire alarm factory, 50,000 alarms go off, 50,000 alarm fire.
A fire that needs N fire departments to put out is called an N-alarm fire
The alarm factory has a ton of alarms inside it, which apparently all go off due to the fire
i see
thats not a thing in the UK
they normal just say "x number of fire engines tackled the blaze"
@Burgi The bit I don't get is the Billy Joel reference ... "Billy Joel briefly detained"
Older XKCDs used to be more philosophical... The new ones aren't that good

Wait a sec. Bluetooth audio is only half-duplex?
19:10
@bwDraco there are three profiles for Bluetooth audio: HeadSet Profile (HSP), Hands-Free Profile (HFP), and Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP).
HSP and HFP support ridiculously awful quality, single-channel (mono), low-bitrate audio with a codec from the digital telephone era, and explicitly don't support any sort of modern CD-quality-like or stereo encoding, either for playback or for capture.
A2DP supports great quality codecs, but only supports playback to the headphones/speakers, NO mic support.
any Bluetooth devices that support something better are breaking the Bluetooth standard, and anything custom they do will ONLY work with products from that vendor, guaranteed (see: Creative BT-W2's "FastStream" codec with "Bluetooth Voice-back").
So you would need your own protocol to do things better?
Lets call it red_tooth.
Ah. That explains some oddities with my brand-new Voyager Legend.
lol
Bluetooth Voice-back is a blatantly confusing term that actually implements what I want, but it IS NOT STANDARD and WILL NOT work with non-Creative headphones/headsets.
I'm surprised the Bluetooth SIG didn't sue Creative over it.
it's implying Bluetooth the standard supports something that it doesn't.
@Hennes NO!! I want the Bluetooth Special Interests Group, the industry consortium that releases successively new protocol versions of Bluetooth, to release version N+1 with support for what I want.
That way I'll be able to say "if the transmitter and the headset peripheral both support Bluetooth version ___, duplex high-quality audio will work. Period."
You know it'll take a while for new products to hit the market.
I don't care; I'm willing to wait years; I just want it to happen
I was hopeful it'll happen with Bluetooth 5, but that spec is out and it still doesn't support it
19:15
Lets starti with red_tooth 5.0, supporting fast charging over wiresless, deinfecting the erea around the antenna (due to power leaks), and a promise to increase trades.
THe latter so traders will wear them.
oh 5 is out
I just moved up from 2.1
2.1 is ancient history; I've been using 4.0 peripherals for 3-4 years at least
I just feel like a misfit here. I've always had some great ideas but always felt powerless to get things done.
2.1 was the lastest newest and shiniest in my 2009 era laptop
@Hennes Pretty much every Bluetooth device I have is at least 3.0.
@bwDraco I may not get anything done myself, but I figure if I make enough noise and some wireless engineer at Sony or whatever gets wind of it, it might end up happening
all I know is that if I stay silent and do nothing, it won't happen
19:16
I replace the wirelesscar dfrom pre-.n to .ac
The same card happened to have BT on it, so I accidentally upgraded it.
I get punished for taking initiative. My parents are just too scared about bad things happening.
that's patently obvious from the lack of support for it over the past, say, 10 years of Bluetooth evolution
yesterday, by allquixotic
@bwDraco as a fellow homebody who has had many issues with overprotective parents, I can say that it's hugely beneficial to spend at least part of your day out of the house... a job -- any job -- would go a long way to helping that
@allquixotic Perhaps a community ad would be appropriate?
Speaking of community ads, should I make one for Policy Plus, my open-source reimplementation of the Local Group Policy Editor?
In all honesty, I am back on duty tomorrow as sports photographer for my college.
It's a flex part time position.
That, however, is not really enough.
I also have a full-time internship on the horizon.
