Q: Why is part of Darth Vader's breather missing after he is unmasked in Return of the Jedi?

RichSWhen Luke removes his father's mask near the end of Return of the Jedi, he removes just the top part. He leaves the part that goes from Vader's neck to his chin. That part sticks a few inches out from his chin. You can see the bottom part sticking out from 1:03 to 2:10 in this video snippet. ...

Can an answer be converted to a comment on a different question?

yes
An answer can be converted to a comment on any post, actually

Well then.
I suppose this should probably be flagged for conversion rather than deletion, then?

indeed

Q: How can every Cubone be wearing its dead mothers' skull?

ThunderforgeThe Pokédex entry for Pokémon Yellow says that Cubone wears its mother's skull: Wears the skull of its deceased mother. Its cries echo inside the skull and come out as a sad melody. This might seem like a reference to the Marowak that was the ghost of Lavender town in the Frist Generation g...

Q: June Film Night - Dark Fantasy!

GallifreyanThe theme of this June's film night is dark fantasy - propose your favourite film or TV series! The boundaries for what is dark fantasy, and what is not, are hard to define - so I'll settle for your judgment on the topic ;) The relevant TV Tropes article may be of help for getting the genral ide...

2:14 AM
@Marvin I nominated Coraline.

That's a great movie!
Love it.
Ah, God, my tooth is driving me crazy and I don't get it pulled until the 25th <cries>
I empathize with @WadCheber >:O

Q: Has there been any instance in Star Trek of beaming in a tricorder/probe into an unknown environment as a safety check?

iMerchantI'm wondering if there has ever been an instance of someone beaming in some sort of probe/tricorder/robot/etc into an environment (e.g. derelict ship, unknown planet, etc) to determine if it is safe to beam in crew? I'm thinking of something analogous to a MALP or a Kino used in the Stargate fran...

@Slytherincess Sorry for that :( But hey, happy Mothers' Day!
@Marvin Note to self - nominate Constantine.

AAww, thank you :D I've had a relaxing day just chillin' in front of the TV and/or computer. My son gave me a beautiful vase of flowers, and my daughter gave me a new Contigo water bottle. And we're having Italian take out for dinner. So, yes, a lovely day. What did you do for your mom?

She was a bit ill, so I made tea with lemon all day, and she had a job for me with some documents.
Not much, really. She's on a work trip now, so I'll have to think of something.

2:24 AM
Hopefully I am the one to post the first music video in the new chat room -- a very positive song!
@Gallifreyan Do you mind me asking if you have brothers or sisters?

@Slytherincess Only child :)
@Slytherincess That's a very nice song, thanks!

@Gallifreyan As am I! (I have step-sisters and a step-brother, but I didn't grow up with them).
@Gallifreyan Good, glad it went over well.

I'll go prepare for uni no. Take care!
And thanks for the song ;)

Ciao ciao!
And you're welcome!

Can anyone help me with uploading an image to Imagr (sp?) it's not taking my image. I tried changing it to a PNG from a JPG and making the image smaller, but it's still not taking the image. Can I host the image offsite?

@Slytherincess Photobucket is still around. Why isn't it taking your image? Any error message?

3:26 AM
@Slytherincess Hum, you found your way to us

@Slytherincess Are you trying the Stack Imgur or just Imgur?

Felina Tanner-AllenI read this book about 20-30 years ago. It's about a group of teenagers who wake up in a huge room where each is on a separate platform. Q: 42 letters in Arthur Dent's question a coincidence?

spacecraft7In The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, just before noticing the native spelled "FORTY-TWO" out of Scrabble letters, Arthur asks "It's all been a bit of a waste of time for them, hasn't it?" This question contains 42 letters. Probably coincidence, but if you had to pick an Ultimate Question...

@Politank-Z It just says "An error has occurred -- Please try again later" I do have a Flickr account.
@CreationEdge Oh, yes, you MUST submit Beetlejuice! I bet it would win.
@EnigmaMaitreya I did indeed! It seems like people are slowly trickling in.

@Slytherincess Has this been happening for a while?

@Gallifreyan Stack Imgur.
@Politank-Z Well, I tried about 10 times, then came over here to ask for help. But I will try again now, as some time has passed.

@Slytherincess Diagnostic test if it doesn't work now: Try uploading something you've uploaded before, or any other image file, to see if that works.

Now I'm debating uploading it at all, because it was for the dark fantasy movie thing, but I'm positive my contribution wouldn't get picked (just being pragmatic) and I'm lazy...

@Babelfish great theory, lousy question.
Hello @Slytherincess! I'm glad you've found your way here.

@SQB Thanks! And thank you for setting up a new chat room :D

SQB
@Slytherincess which film is it?

user132126
@slytherincess I can't atm, but I'll try to tomorrow

user132126
Having issues uploading to stack? Sometimes I get them if the image is noo large or the url has that revision crud after the file extension

I might like to nominate this film "Jennifer's Body" - imdb.com/title/tt1131734 but I would like some consensus and do ability on it. It is R rated but my memory is that it is more a thematic R than not.

5:13 AM
@SQB I love Hannah's voice! Another great song from Scarlet Canary. I need to go see them, seriously. That dome looks like one in Boulder. Maybe it's the same one. The suburbs certainly look like some in Denver/Metro.
@EnigmaMaitreya Well, at least it has a female lead :)) What elements of fantasy does it have?

SQB
@EnigmaMaitreya why not add the suggestion, noting the rating, and let the discussion unfold?
@Slytherincess I think there's a kick off for their tour soon.
Yeah, they'll be at Moe's BBQ on June 4.

@EnigmaMaitreya We just did The Terminator. That's rated R.

Q: Looking for children's book with portal to a fantasy world in a piece of furniture

@Slytherincess He he Jennifer(Megan Fox) is possed by a Demon and Needy(Amanda Seyfried), Her Best Friend was interrupted in her possession and is something in between. Is that Fantasy? It is perhaps the only movie I ever really Liked Megan Fox's acting as it seemed to fit her perfectly

5:45 AM
@EnigmaMaitreya I liked her acting there as well. I can think of one two racy scenes, but otherwise the film should be fine.
@CreationEdge I'd support Pan's Labyrinth if you were to nominate it ;)

@Gallifreyan CRAP that (Pan's Labyrinth) was one I was thinking seriously about but chose not to ... HECK you guys nominate that and count me in

I know Ixrec and Adamant wanted to support it as well.
I'm waiting for people to nominate Hellboy and Constantine, for obvious reasons.

Ha I forgot about Constantine, another excellent choice

I think it's seriously underrated.
Tilda Swinton alone is worth watching it.
We accept TV series nominations as well.

I agree and some times I think Keanu Reeves haters get to active.
I was trying to find a way to fit this "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)" in but it was to hard to categorize it as Fantasy.

5:55 AM
Has anyone here seen Imaginaerum?

Apparent spam for the GST.
Probably worth flagging.
Don't ask me why people feel the need to spam for political programs now.

@Adamant Flagged ;) Would you like to nominate Pan's Labyrinth?

@Gallifreyan I don't know. I'll let someone else nominate it.

Ok, I think CreationEdge may be up to it.

I wanted to nominate something more obscure (such as Painted Skin: The Resurrection) but I grew dissatisfied with everything I found.

6:00 AM
I can introduce a special +1 award for obscure ;)
Mind you, there's still a heck of a lot of anime to choose from (I think)

SQB
@Adamant flagged.
I'm a bit puzzled by the nomination of Big Trouble in Little China. Is it that dark?
I'd support Constantine because I really like that film.

Writing up a nomination now.

@Gallifreyan No but I wrote it down to try and watch
@SQB I was suprised to see it with that tag, I can kind of see the justification based on the abduction, sex trafficking etc. IF the consensus is no, I will gladly pull it Welland there is only one character really providing the comic relief.

SQB
@EnigmaMaitreya Don't pull it, just let it be voted on.

user132126
I'm already supposed to nominate Beetlejuice so I don't want to go crazy

user132126
6:11 AM
Also I still have no Internet, mobile only, so finding images and writing a post might not be any time soon. Wednesday, perhaps

user132126
Feel free to throw in those movies for me

user132126
I own or have easy access to Constantine, Hellboy and Beetlejuice, so I'm game for those. I could rent Pan's Labyrinth maybe.

SQB
I saw Constantine and Hellboy on Netflix not too long ago.
That is, I watched the former and saw that the latter was on there.

6:27 AM
I'm not sure if I should nominate the first Hellboy or the second.
I think the second one was better, but I'm not sure, and I don't know if it'll make sense without having seen the first one.

@Gallifreyan What linkage would be broken other than the how the team is what is? Well I guess how Hellboy came to be.

@EnigmaMaitreya I don't remember it that well, so I can't tell for sure :D

Perhaps the only thing would be How Hell boy and the agency came to be and if that is it, I wouldn't worry to much about it

Hmm. I've been deleting spam comments under my YouTube video. Now I noticed there's a "flag" option. <stupid me>
@EnigmaMaitreya Would you say the first film is better than the second one, or vice versa?

@Gallifreyan it has been a long time but I have a better overall feeling for the 2nd one. Can I quantify that nope not a chance.
It is probably like "Aliens" is better than "Alien"
Aliens told a story and build a world

6:48 AM
In June we're watching dark fantasy films - nominate your favourite one!

Q: What to name our new main chat room (or keep it as it is)

MoozWe have recently lost our "main" chat room, Mos Eisley. But that's ok, we have a new one: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Given that this was created by an individual, and in the spirit of community consensus, my question is What should we name our new general chat room? Please not...

@Marvin Obie Marvin, slow as ever.

@Gallifreyan Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to take you to meta.

Morning!

Wow.
We have no bounties at the moment.
The featured tab has just disappeared.

Wow.

7:07 AM
We had better rectify that, huh?
Greedobie, go!

Hmm, no new questions and the last one didn't go anywhere. Maybe it's time to work a little..?

Wait, is there a bounty bot in this room?

@Adamant Zaphod

Zaphod, go!

Q: Why does Kullervo have this name?

AdamantIn the Companions Quartet by Julia Golding, the primary antagonist is Kullervo, an insubstantial, shapeshifting force of evil, bent on destroying humanity for the good of magical and non-magical non-human species: a supernatural eco-terrorist of sorts. He shares a name with the abused, incestuo...

7:13 AM
@Zaphod Hello.

I remembered a film that was supposed to be dark fantasy.
But I forgot it.
Damn.

If no one else can answer it, I'll probably contact the author and get an answer anyway.
(Or someone else could do that for me and get the bounty ;) )

Does this film count as dark fantasy?
Labyrinth is a 1986 British-American adventure musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson, executive-produced by George Lucas, and based upon conceptual designs by Brian Froud. The film revolves around 15-year-old Sarah's (Jennifer Connelly) quest to reach the center of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, who Sarah wished away to Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie). With the exception of Connelly and Bowie, most of the film's significant characters are played by puppets produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The film started as a collaboration between Henson and...

Sure.

7:16 AM
@Gallifreyan You remind me of the babe.
:D

And it's sort of on YouTube

Oh, I just realized: When they say "Remind me of the babe," they mean a literal baby, right?
Like the one he's holding right there?

It's not on YouTube :( And not on DailyMotion either :'(

SQB
The Dark Crystal has its name going for it.
@Adamant how?

Dark Shadows was one film I wanted to nominate.

7:24 AM
@SQB Kid kidnapped by goblins? David Bowie being creepy?

Dawn, it's on the tip of my tongue.... ARGH!
Addams films? Anyone?

It seems dark to me. On the other hand, I don't know about the protagonist having anti-heroic traits. The Goblin King is somewhat anti-villainous, though.

SQB
@Adamant I thought the dark part was in the lack of black/white morality.

Ah, Crimson Peak, with Mia Wasikowska and Tom Hiddleston's buns.

I will say, though, that I would prefer a more obscure film.
Movie Nights generally run on nostalgia.

SQB
7:25 AM
Labyrinth, while fun, is just a straightforward hero's quest.

Those "traits" aren't supposed to be binding or anything, just some guidance for people not familiar with dark fantasy.

SQB
Agreed, but still I wouldn't classify Labyrinth as dark fantasy. It's a fun fantasy film, but not dark.

How about Imaginaerum?
It's not strictly fantasy, since the fantasy sequences occur only in the hero's head, but it's dark, and surreal, and very aesthetically pleasing.
And its score is by Nightwish.
And it has a fair bit of Nightwish music in it.
Damn, I really don't want Coraline to win this.

7:41 AM
@SQB I'll try and head down there if it doesn't conflict with my son's graduation stuff. That would be awesome!
I was going to nominate The Spiderwick Chronicles -- it's definitely dark fantasy ala Lemony Snicket.

@Slytherincess Go for it!

@Gallifreyan It's a long shot, I think.
I think The Addams Family would be brilliant :D

I only have the faintest recollection of those films, so I'll wait for someone else to nominate them.

I've been locked in my girlfriends house, send help!

@Edlothiad ?

@SQB She left for her lab this morning at 7:20 (no way am I getting up then). Her flatmate then left for uni at 8:20, I was still waking up

<sends @Edlothiad some freshly baked cookies> For you and your girlfriend ;)

at 8:40 I decided, time to go get some work done. Walk to the door and it's bolted shut :(
@Slytherincess Ahah, thanks!! :)

7:59 AM
Which floor are you on?

@Gallifreyan 5 lol

No prob ;) I take it it's a key-only lock?

Any trees nearby?

@Slytherincess Well the one i usually go out is like a knob you can turn on the inside, but need a key for on the outside. But it's been bolted shut. So no chance :P

Oh dear :))

8:03 AM
If someone now asked a question, I could procrastinate longer!

@Aegon If nothing but to see Karl Urban on a horse...

@Aegon If they stood high enough for his blade ;)

I'm watching the Star Wars: Legacy episodes, the animation is awful

SQB
@Edlothiad So there's nothing left to do other than browsing the Stack all day? What was your problem again?

8:08 AM
@SQB Well I have 60 hours to write a 20 page report outlining my final year project which counts for about 5 ish % of my degree. but yes

SQB
@Edlothiad Are you on mobile?

@SQB No sir

SQB
Or do you have a computer with keyboard available?

@SQB Yes sir

SQB
So? What's the problem?

8:11 AM
Phew, 5 nominations. I really really hope Coraline gets beaten to the top.

Umm... I'm not near a source of textbooks..?

Are you saying you don't usually bring textbooks to your girlfriend's place? What kind of engineer are you?

@Gallifreyan The non-geeky kind?

Never met a non-geeky engineer.

@Gallifreyan The kind with a girlfriend?

8:14 AM
:D

I have one with me, but it was directly translated from Chinese, without the grammar being translated, so it's a tad dodge.

I don't even know what engineers do, so I really shouldn't cast aspersions.

Build things

@Slytherincess Build Eiffel Towers and Gyza Pyramids, but are unable to escape from a locked 5th floor apartment ;)

We're like "advanced" version of trade jobs, like Builders, Electricians and Mechanics
@Gallifreyan Unwilling...

8:17 AM
@Gallifreyan Ahahahaha!!!!
Now how do you embed a YouTube video into a SFF answer?

But then, I know nothing about escaping from girlfriends' apartments, so I'll just finish my assignment and go to lunch.

@Slytherincess Just type in the link

I asked this before, but I admit I've forgotten how.

@Slytherincess Just paste the plain link
A la https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wozOCjrIp1s

Okay, no brackets or anything?

8:19 AM

kk thx

It doesn't display in the preview though, so don't worry if you don't see the video onebox

Okay, yeah, I don't see the video, but the URL is red. Is that normal?

Send me a link to the answer?

It's not up yet.

8:32 AM
Ah ok

@Slytherincess http image links should be red - is the YouTube link red?
You can post the answer and then I can edit it.

I'm coming back to this question (sorry adamant) but is this not opinions based?
15
Q: Are the Valar vulnerable to the One Ring?

AdamantWe know that the One Ring would have corrupted any mortal (humans, dwarves, hobbits, etc) or Elf who claimed it. Only Gandalf or another Maia (Saruman, say, or Radagast) could even have tried to wrest control of the Ring from Sauron — but even they would not have been immune to its corruption, me...

All the answers have come to the same conclusion, but none has a canonical answer and makes an assumption through various means.

Q: How is this question not Too Broad?

I Love YouWhat's the technical explanation for gravity to exist inside a spacecraft in science fiction? This old question is still open. Can I know why it is not Too Broad? There can literally be thousands of different theories and it is ever-growing.

@Marvin Voted to close.

@Gallifreyan cmon review queue
anyone know of something really funny thats ~20 minutes long that I can watch?
A really funny episode of somthing?

8:40 AM
@Edlothiad If you're into this sort of thing, you can watch Graham Norton's show.

Oh god...

Floof:

does that answer your question?

You can watch this:
8 minutes, useful information

SQB
@Edlothiad No. We may not know the answer, but it's not asking for opinions. Even though the answers may be opinions, the question is not soliciting them.

8:47 AM
OK!

SQB
@Edlothiad Shouldn't be, although the answer would be an uninteresting "we don't know, it didn't happen."

%%alive
Hey no bot here?! Boring. :D

SQB
The owner of the old bot declined.

@ShadowWizard Nothing to break here, move on :D

@Gallifreyan That was cool

8:53 AM
@Edlothiad That guy has a lot of cool videos.

@SQB Technically the only correct answer to the above one

I really like that he doesn't talk in them. What's the need?

Why's he so ninja?

Presumably because talking in a forest is bad for wildlife.
And I don't like people talking in YouTube videos.

@Gallifreyan I mean why's e so good at doing cool things

SQB
8:57 AM
@Edlothiad Well, yeah, but we allow speculation based on canon. I'm not as well versed in Tolkien's Legendarium as other users are, but if we can show that Valar are generally not affected by Maia or Maian objects, we can make the case that they wouldn't be affected by the One Ring either.

@Edlothiad Don't know :) Right now he's being paid for it.
@ArtOfCode Up for a dark fantasy film night?

SQB
@Gallifreyan How about binge-watching Penny Dreadful? That's about as dark as it gets.
Takes more than one night, though.

@SQB who? @Kutu? Why? :(
So how can we blame now?

@SQB A couple of episodes, why not?

SQB
I don't know. He bowed out of being room owner here as well.

9:02 AM
@SQB Does that mean there is an opening? ;-=

@SQB maybe angry with the deletion of the main room and suspending those two users... ?

SQB
@ShadowWizard What happened in Mos, stays in Mos.
May 12 at 8:31, by SQB
Let's not discuss what happened to Mos Eisley in here; please take that to Meta.

@Gallifreyan Yes, the youtube link is red, so that's good!

@SQB Agreed. Let's keep our conversations limited to whether Palpatine would beat Supergirl

@Adamant Never, he got beat by a kid

9:04 AM
Does a red lightsaber count as a red sun?
2

That makes me wonder whether force choke would work on those guys.

Is kryptonite a kyber crystal?
2

@SQB Agreed. Besides, it would only be fair to let Ktulumike speak for himself. And he might not want to, which is totally his right. That's all I'll say about it.

SQB
@Slytherincess I agree. That's why I said that I don't know instead of speculating, however tempting that may be.

The Woman of Durasteel?

9:06 AM
@Adamant Where do I apply? I need a job.

@Slytherincess Huh?

The woman of Durasteel ... I am a woman ... I was kidding :P

@Slytherincess Oh Ok. :)

Yasss, Constantine beat Coraline! My job just became easier (I hope)

@Gallifreyan Do you hate Coraline?

9:10 AM
hate is a strong word

Let's not forget the big question.
Superman and family can only be hurt by kryptonite and magic.

@Slytherincess Not at all - I just don't want to bother with digging through the Internet to find a copy for the shared video room.

Is the Force magic?

And I certainly don't want to upload one myself.

basically yes

9:12 AM
@Adamant close -> primarily opinion-based

@Gallifreyan ★
2
If the Force is magic than Palpatine can use it against Supergirl etc.

@Gallifreyan Can someone with Netflix share it?

@Adamant It's midi-chlorians. Force = midi-chlorians

@Slytherincess Don't think so. It looks like it only supports DailyMotion and YouTube.

>midi-chlorians = > force

9:14 AM
@Edlothiad How many midi-chlorians does Pablo Hidalgo have?

it supports other sites but I think it's stuck to sites that simply allow "anyone" to view any video, i.e. not Netflix

OVER 9000!
yes I did it
Also supports gfycat, vimeo, Facebook, Amazon, vidme, twitch, souncloud, mixcloud

@Edlothiad What? 9000? There's no way that can be right!

Dr J. Buzz Von Ornsteiner is a great name for a Forensic Psychologist </random, from ID TV>

@Edlothiad 77 rep until you can review chat flags and see deleted rooms.

9:18 AM
@Slytherincess :-=

@Edlothiad I have an Amazon Prime account. Would that help if Coraline ultimately gets picked?

@Edlothiad so... could someone gain Force related capabilities after a blood transfusion from a Force user?

@Adamant IKR? Except a vampire named "Buzz" seems implausible :))

Or was I not supposed to bring that up since it will be probably used as the plot of the next movie?

@Slytherincess You have to rent I beliebe

9:20 AM
I am interested in names, which is why Dr. J. Buzz Von Ornsteiner caught my attention.

@Derpy How would I know, all I know is prequels = canon, everything else is a disney lie
@Gallifreyan Hmm, questions anyone?

@Edlothiad So ... even though I have access to Amazon movies, I'd have to rent it? Ridikulus!

@Edlothiad Try branching out. Go for a bounty.

@Derpy No, Grievous tried and failed.

Bug some authors. ;)
@Gallifreyan It's not nice to fool Mother Nature. ;-=

9:23 AM
@Slytherincess yep. £4.99, it says

@Adamant I might

@ArtOfCode And that's with Prime? Hmm. I'll check it out when I get a chance.
Just to know.

@Slytherincess yeah, I'm on Prime too. I didn't mean to be, but I missed cancelling before the renewal date... so I am anyway

@ArtOfCode I honestly use Prime enough that it more than pays for itself. I rarely buy non-Prime items, unless the only option is non-Prime, which happens occasionally.
I am loathe to pay $4.00 shipping on a $5.00 item.

@ShadowWizard if you bring a bot over, there can be one

9:31 AM
well if y'all are looking for horror, this is included with Prime
no idea how good it is, but it's there
female protagonist if you count the doll

Haha :D

@ShadowWizard quick, they made the big mistake of asking you for a bot. Bring the WAG on here!

Someone say bot?

@ArtOfCode We're looking more for a fantasy than a horror, so that the fantasy side is more prominent.
