6:06 AM
Hi, I noticed a (v. minor) typo in the scrlayer-scrpage package. Is there somewhere I can file a bug report?

6:25 AM

6:41 AM
Where on that page? I couldn't find a bug report section (I also can't read German -- was relying on google translate.)

@Hugh You can post it here if you want and i ping the relevant people.

7:02 AM
It's the \footheight \headheight to low. Should be too low, I think.

7:48 AM
This is LuaTeX, Version 0.98.4 (TeX Live 2017/dev)
@JosephWright ^^

@PauloCereda saw that picture when it only had the title "remember your time in highschool?" - this is way better. (at least for me. we didn't learn python in school. pascal yes... that turtle <3 ... but no python)
@yo' i like the blue color! btw - only thing i noticed - first time hover causes a kind of "white blinking" but you can get rid of it by using img sprites stackoverflow.com/questions/13286745/…
@yo' nice touch with the colour-customised favicons, too!

8:03 AM
@pogo-otter i know i can, but i won't i think. I've got some other plans in mind; the simplest is image preloading, or i could use alpha like for the social icons, that would mean one image per button and problem solved....
Btw, chrome is not subpixel-precise, which really sucks...

8:31 AM
@yo' I am not sure if alpha would not cause the same problem? (after all the social icons are smaller so they might just not cause the same problem yet. but .. oh well.. gotta try to know.) the minimalistic social icons are nice, though. and properly displayed in firefox. Would it work, to remove the black background of the icons?

680:\newcommand*{\makeletterhead}{}
@SAM ^^^^^^^ line 680 of moderncv.cls

that the great thing about linux :)

8:46 AM
@SAM except I'm on windows

thanks anyway

@SAM well naturally, can't use windows without cygwin, need to use X to get a proper window system.

but as you see it's an empty definition

@SAM oh didn't check that, hang on more grep foo needed:-)
@SAM that's the default, the actual used one depends on the style options, one of:
$grep -n makeletterhead$(dirname kpsewhich moderncv.cls)/*
/usr/local/texlive/2016/texmf-dist/tex/latex/moderncv/moderncvheadiii.sty:129:\renewcommand*{\makeletterhead}{%

i didn't pay attention instead of looking inside moderncvhead* i was looking inside moderncvbody* sorry

9:07 AM
@pogo-otter it would of course, that's one of the problems. For the icons: they use two "colours": black and transparent, and they are on white/gray background!
(that's how I made the hover effect in the first place...)

10:20 AM
@DavidCarlisle Oh goody
@DavidCarlisle Can you send to me? I'll look to grab the w32tex build
@DavidCarlisle These look very odd

10:45 AM
@DavidCarlisle Something out by 144 in penalties, plus other changes too: I guess we need to get down to some examples for the list

11:07 AM
@JosephWright (been at a meeting) yes was going to say mostly a difference in penalty values.
also can you try lualatex \\stop (or same with just one \ depending on your command line:-) I get :

@yo' :)

12:13 PM
@yo' given my experience with a recent duck contest I'd choose E and expect to get a gold badge for my efforts.

@DavidCarlisle oh no!

@yo' don't you think I deserved a populist badge?

@DavidCarlisle I've got couple of these too :-)

@yo' but not for failing to get a number in the range 1-200 :-)

@DavidCarlisle ummmm well ... is this the way how you break luatex? :-D

12:17 PM
@yo' getting a number between 1-200 is harder

@egreg yep but try with 0.98.4 and you get 156 instead of 300

@DavidCarlisle Oh! Bleeding edge!
@DavidCarlisle New version and new bugs for you to find!

@egreg yes decided it was time to start compiling from svn again to see what's broken changed this time.

2:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle The team announced they aren't adding new features for version 1; but they said nothing about bugs.
3

> New feature 1994/12/01
^ clsguide.pdf, p. 26 :)

@wilx just seems like yesterday to me

@DavidCarlisle :D
The date is related to LaTeX version, right?

@wilx yes, that's about a year in to latex2e and several small things got changed or added around that time

@DavidCarlisle Hidden feature in graphics?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
$\frac{\scalebox{0.5}{AAA}}{\scalebox{0.5}{AAAAAA}}$
$\frac{\scalebox{0.75}{\displaystyle \sum_i \min(A_i,B_i)}} {\scalebox{0.75}{\displaystyle \sum_i \max(A_i,B_i)}}$
\end{document}

2:11 PM
@DavidCarlisle A product of Hans' imagination?

@JosephWright if you take the lowest 4 bits of 150 then you get 0110 which is 6 .....

@DavidCarlisle A new way for doing sums! Nice!

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle My guess was something to do with truncation of a value

@DavidCarlisle o.O

2:19 PM
@egreg vvv
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}

$\frac{\mbox{\scalebox{0.75}{\displaystyle \sum_i \min(A_i,B_i)}}} {\mbox{\scalebox{0.75}{\displaystyle \sum_i \max(A_i,B_i)}}}$
\end{document}
@egreg just looking at graphics.sty I don't see immediately why the positioning is off if done without the surrounding box?

@DavidCarlisle I guess the infamous \over gets in the way.

@egreg yes sure but I don't see why exactly. I suppose I'd better add the extra \hbox in at source.

@yo' did you implement it yet? still blinking like a little star here. :)

@pogo-otter it shan't be; have you tried Ctrl+F5?

@egreg better?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\makeatletter
\long\def\Gscale@box#1[#2]#3{%
\leavevmode

\else

\box\tw@
\fi
\egroup%<<<<<<<<

2:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle can I ask you please why is \bgroup...\egroup used rather than {} for the new box?

@yo' 'cause I wasn't sure when I started if the box ended in the same macro:-)

@DavidCarlisle ah ok :-)))

@yo' I'm sure you teach students to verify a full specification before starting to code but.....

@DavidCarlisle are you crazy? :D

@yo' yup, also thought about cache but ctrl+f5 did not change. however, can't say that it's very apparent for the b/w one, but blue and orange: yes, still first-time-blinkers.

2:35 PM
@pogo-otter which browser?
:32123921 ok. which version? :-)

@yo' firefox, 48.0.2

@pogo-otter so old:-)

@DavidCarlisle Is it? I'm not sure. I never close it. I'm kind of a tab-messy.

@pogo-otter I have 51.0a1 (2016-09-04) (nightly build:-)

@DavidCarlisle don't ask for my version :-)

2:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle strange. i just checked and at least lil foxy told me that it is the most recent version (or rather, it does not offer an update.)

@pogo-otter ooh foxes and otters. :)

@pogo-otter there are several release channels, I'm on nightly so it updates at least once a day:-)

@PauloCereda sec, there's something, you'll like.
https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/fox02.jpg
five fat furry foxes. it's so great. i'd love to go to the fox island one day.
@DavidCarlisle I had to check what nightly was, so how do you get on with it. Is it noticable that it's testing?

@egreg if you get the tick for suggesting an extra \hbox level I'll be grumpy all day
@pogo-otter I've used it as my default browser for years. Mostly it's perfectly fine (it restarts and restores all your tabs rather a lot of course) but every now and then they do something which really breaks it and you have to give up and use chrome or IE or something for a bit

@DavidCarlisle so what's your reason for using it? just out of curiosity? :)

2:48 PM
@pogo-otter ooh if you light them on fire, we would get several Firefox sessions. :)

@pogo-otter well I claim it's part of the day job (checking mathml, of which I'm the editor) works well in bleeding edge releases, and also that our product documentation a few thousand math-heavy pages also works in browsers that people will have next year, not just ones they have now.

Is this question on topic? Why do we have on topic questions about tools that do not require a Latex-based answer?
0

I am trying to create this in IPE draw: However I am finding this somewhat difficult, as it is not clear to me how to cut the spline into multi-coloured segments. Any ideas?

@Alenanno I think not, but it's only a guess

@yo' I think not as well. It seems strange that a question that is not about Latex can be accepted. It's like accepting questions about Photoshop just because you can theoretically include .png files in your Latex document.

@JosephWright oops not bit truncation, just internal register code :-(

2:56 PM
@PauloCereda should be accompanied by The Doors songs, though.

@pogo-otter oooh I see what you did there. <3
Otters are very smart!

@PauloCereda I knew it, Otters and Ducks are forming an alliance. We need to squash that!

@Alenanno it's a fresh question; what makes it "accepted"?

@Alenanno Ducks are very naïve, otters might be the mastermind behind it.

@yo' The fact that the tag wiki doesn't say anything about that is a good hint.
@PauloCereda :P Ducks are cunning.
@yo' I don't know, I'll wait and see what happens. :D

3:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle I didn't need your advice for guessing that another boxing level suffices. :P

@Alenanno Quack. <3

@JosephWright :-) (also I just subscribed, but I looked on the archives)

@JosephWright can you reproduce my discretionary example with 0.98.3, Hans seems not to have picked up on it?
@JosephWright also just did a git pull and github.com:deepakjois/luaharfbuzz had changes as recently as last week, not sure if it's usable yet.....

4:39 PM
@JosephWright eek can we automatically normalise the lack of discretionary in 123-456 or are we going to have to use xxx.luatex.tlg for those cases.

@JosephWright I think this question can be closed as bug report?

Sometimes asking questions on the ConTeXt mailing list results in no answer. Do you guys have any suggestion on how long time I should wait before asking here (of course mentioning the cross posting)? As of now it has gone several days (and in some case weeks) since I tried the list. In fact, it might be better to start at TeX.SE, and to turn to the mailing list if there are no answers... Any opinions?

@mickep In my opinion: If you properly link the crosspost, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is transparent and clear.

@Johannes_B OK, thank you, maybe I should not hesitate about it. I just feel I don't want to waste people's time...
I'll go on and post one of the questions here now (I'll just update my ConTeXt locally first to see that my problem is still there, you never know) :)

6:36 PM
I think the following question is more a pure python question. Should it be moved to a special python page (I do not know python and if there is a page for it here)?
1

I am writing python to parse and process lots n lots of files to build a final report of results from information in the files. I am using python to write the latex file, then converting the latex file to pdf. In my example, you will see how I have to escape a backslash to produce the latex file ...

7:31 PM
@Kurt It's likely that asking on Stack Overflow would be better.

7:45 PM
@AlanMunn Ah, okay. But as far as I know I can only ask to change to meta.tex.

8:02 PM
@Kurt Post a comment suggesting that I guess. I don't think you need to ask on meta. @StefanKottwitz or @JosephWright can migrate it if they think that's the appropriate course of action.

8:18 PM
@Johannes_B I installed a new bot protection at LaTeX-Community.org for registering. It requires a bit manual drag and drop.

@StefanKottwitz A bit is ok. A few dozen spammers.... not ok. :-/

8:46 PM
@egreg, @DavidCarlisle, @JosephWright and others: ^^

@PauloCereda send me the money and I'd print off a copy for you

@DavidCarlisle ooh

9:03 PM
@PauloCereda That's hysterical.
And it doesn't hold its value very well.

@DavidCarlisle I can do it for just $900, it's a big bargain @AlanMunn :D 9:26 PM Some legal documents use big spaces between individual letters of a word here. Like s o m e t h i n g o r o t h er @wilx Are you asking how to do this? What is the "effect" called and can I do it automatically? Yes. :D @wilx Sheep stealing @wilx It's called 'letterspacing' and both the soul package and microtype can do it. I think also it can be done with fontspec if you are using XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX. @AlanMunn OK, I will look it up. 9:29 PM Jul 28 '11 at 12:42, by egreg Whoever would letterspace lowercase letters would also steal sheep. :D @PauloCereda lol @wilx <3 9:48 PM @DavidCarlisle I'll take a look at the changes that may need real work 10:03 PM @JosephWright i'm doiing a test run now. 10:15 PM hmm$ ls build/test/*diff | wc -l
83

@DavidCarlisle :-(

@JosephWright (@yo') ah that's because Hans has changed the discretionary logging as he mentioned in the second luatex list thread, so anything with a discretionary has a changed log. Probably too trired to go through them all now and see which are real changes
! ....\discretionary (penalty 50)
! .....< \T1/cmr/bx/n/14.4 -

@DavidCarlisle ah, so basically, many "false positives"

@yo' hiding a few real ones, yes...

10:32 PM
@JosephWright a quick filter of the diffs with grep suggests that every diff chunk involves a discretionary, so all relate to the different logging or (possibly intentional) different hyphenation. only exception to that: one supercalifragilistic box no longer overfull in tlb0435, a word followed intermediately by \hbox seems to hyphenate? perhaps intentional, will look again tomorrow.

11:23 PM
Apparently the word "twitch" cannot be hyphenated. Well, I just did! \hyphenation{twi-tch}`
runs
