I had this idea for a while, and I thought it was worth sharing by now, even if I have to interrupt a fairly useless conversation about accents. How about lowering the number of spam or offensive flags needed from (1) users who have the Deputy/Marshal badge on that site (or even on any site), (2) users who are moderator on any site, and/or (3) users who belong to the charcoal team (i.e. those who can give feedback)
Especially (3) is interesting considering integration
And I would really like to see Charcoal being trusted with 2x weight spam flags, but honestly it might do more harm than good... as soon as people found out that being a regular here gets you more MOAR POWAH, we'd get overrun by people coming in here just to get power.
@TIPS What about if I flag a perfectly reasonable post? it would be automatically be deleted after x minutes, even though I was the only one to flag it
@angussidney but the people who would notice are the people who we actually don't want in here (I've got a couple in mind who I know would notice, and who would really grate with the people in here)
Yeah, people finding out is the problem. Using MS reviewers would be easier to administrate, because it could be done automatically (JSON endpoint for SE to hit to update its cache).
But yeah, we'd end up with hundreds of people signing up for accounts on MS just to see if they can get power. And, with the way metasmoke approved users currently work, that's all up to Undo to admin.
We could build tooling to let any MS admin promote user accounts, but I think Undo prefers it the current way so that he's a single point of access to metasmoke. Reduces the attack surface for abuse
They're kicking off the next SE Quality Project in a few weeks' time, and spam filters are part of that - but so that they can be prepared, they're gonna come have a chat with us before they kick the project off. That'll be this week or next week.
@Yvette yeah, I'd like to see as many of us here as possible - that means more ideas. But fair warning: it's likely to be in the UTC 1400-2200 range, which is the middle of the night for you
I still have a (perhaps irrational) fear that making the smokey project more official will mean that I'll fall by the wayside in the process, which would be sad because killing spam quickly is one of my high points in boring days of code reviewing and programming

@Nij the main problem here is that the label isn't exactly representative of all VLQ posts, and there are other posts that aren't VLQ but the label fits to. Take spam as an example. While no amount of editing will make spam legitimate content, VLQ is not the flag option I go for when seeing spam. Frankly, the labels mean nothing at all compared to how members have established the usage of pretty much any function in an SE site. The main reason that your flag got declined was that the post attempted to answer the question, and this is sufficient reason not to delete it. — TIPS57 secs ago

@Magisch Before you start worrying, let's actually talk to Pops. Right now we are all speculating on what the conversation will be, what possible integration will look like and what the end result will be. We have to do step one first...get a CM into this room. After that, we see what SE likes and wants to do.
@Magisch Like Andy said, it's all speculation, but I wouldn't worry about that. Anthing is likely to be run off metasmoke, probably as another layer on top of everything else. I'm not seeing core change much for this

Good point. I think that the same applies to over 99.9% of the questions on math.SE. The other 0.1%, however, well, there are really nice proofs of certain facts in there, that might not have been given elsewhere.
