@angussidney not a clue... Pops is America somewhere, don't know where, so UTC afternoon I'd guess

10:01 AM
@ArtOfCode Eastern United States, so UTC-5

I have seen Pops active at times of the day that surprised me.

Some of you people here in chat surprise me too
Undo and Yvette seem to be in chat 22/7ish

@wythagoras right-o, so basically anywhere in the range UTC0 1400-2200.

@angussidney Some people are more than one person.

I'm usually around 18-19/7

10:03 AM
@angussidney lol yeh

On weekdays I'm only about 6hrs a day and on weekends about 10hrs a day
chat.se is blocked on school internet :/
so is half of the SE network

ah k thanks

@ArtOfCode just looked that up, smack bang in the middle of the night for me :(

@angussidney yep, quite a lot of American-timed things don't work for you guys :( Read the transcript and drop your comments in the morning after

@TIPS (sorry for the late reply) we pronounce them as 'har-ba' and 'bae-bee' (so basically exacly as they are spelled)

I mean major ones.

@angussidney aye... I get to be slap bang in the middle, which is pretty convenient

@Yvette correct

10:09 AM
it just varies by strength of accent

@Yvette you don't say

@angussidney exactly ;)

@Yvette beat me to it twice

@TIPS two, normal and stereotypical

@angussidney great minds and all that

10:09 AM
@Quill That's two too many.

@Quill crikey, stone the crows, whaddya mean?

I understand Brits. Most of them at least. All they want to do is to squish the vowels and swallow /r/.
Aussies, on the other hand

While we're at it, would anyone else like me to answer some more questions about aussies?

@angussidney we're awesome

10:15 AM
I just added Patents to the list of bizarre SE's.

I had this idea for a while, and I thought it was worth sharing by now, even if I have to interrupt a fairly useless conversation about accents. How about lowering the number of spam or offensive flags needed from (1) users who have the Deputy/Marshal badge on that site (or even on any site), (2) users who are moderator on any site, and/or (3) users who belong to the charcoal team (i.e. those who can give feedback)
Especially (3) is interesting considering integration

@wythagoras This is one of those good ideas that is not necessary.

@wythagoras but 3 is also a bit harder to implement
There appears to be a bunch of spam on patents SE

The devs will implement something that the sites need a dire need of.

go down the questions list and flag them everyone

10:17 AM
With us shotgunning neckbeards, we don't have a problem of spam lying around, except perhaps in quiet betas.
So it boils down to "there isn't any problem to be solved" maxim.

I like the idea, though.

On most sites, this is not necessary, but I've seen spam sitting aroud for hours, even though it was reported here.

Ja.
As I said, it's a good idea @Art, but not one that will be implemented unless spammers suddenly get smarter and more bored.

The only time we really have issues is on quiet sites, where it can sit for a while without gathering 6 flags.

Hmph.
Maybe also consider allowing deletion by 1 flag if something has been flagged and not yet deleted after x minutes.

10:21 AM
And I would really like to see Charcoal being trusted with 2x weight spam flags, but honestly it might do more harm than good... as soon as people found out that being a regular here gets you more MOAR POWAH, we'd get overrun by people coming in here just to get power.

@ArtOfCode Yeah, thats what I thought, but if we keep it quiet most people won't notice

and then the administrative overhead of the list of admitted people would effectively take most of our mods out of feedback and flagging duties

@TIPS What about if I flag a perfectly reasonable post? it would be automatically be deleted after x minutes, even though I was the only one to flag it

@angussidney Ja, lemme think further.
Wait, no, that won't be the case.
How much potential for abuse is there @Angus, when two people flag a post as spam in a dead beta and someone comes later and adds the third spam flag?
I'm asking for that third spam flag to take effect.

@angussidney but the people who would notice are the people who we actually don't want in here (I've got a couple in mind who I know would notice, and who would really grate with the people in here)

10:25 AM
@TIPS yeah, that works

@ArtOfCode Am I one of them? Haha

You're already here, so no ;)

Dammit

Restart: API quota is 4614.

I'm still considered partially potentially useful.

10:27 AM
@ArtOfCode alternatively you could only allow people who are metasmoke-review allowed
but once again, if people find out....

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body, link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: How To Get A Younger Face by anycocajojuko on askubuntu.com

Yeah, people finding out is the problem. Using MS reviewers would be easier to administrate, because it could be done automatically (JSON endpoint for SE to hit to update its cache).

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body, pattern-matching website in body: What Does Testo Vital Actually Do? by Kellenhazel on askubuntu.com

But yeah, we'd end up with hundreds of people signing up for accounts on MS just to see if they can get power. And, with the way metasmoke approved users currently work, that's all up to Undo to admin.
sd 2k

mmm

10:29 AM
@ArtOfCode So they'll all lose hope eventually. Win

@TIPS you're too optimistic :P

Does askubuntu have a lower required flag count or something? spam seems to get deleted faster

No, I'm a bad pessimist. There's a difference.

or is it just cause smokey is in their chatroom

We could build tooling to let any MS admin promote user accounts, but I think Undo prefers it the current way so that he's a single point of access to metasmoke. Reduces the attack surface for abuse

10:31 AM
@angussidney I don't think there's anything special about AU other than a bunch of bored companion flaggers

@angussidney nope, standard values

Not as prevalent as SOCVR, but they're like machines.

Yeah

And have an envyingly fast internet

Don't even get me started on my internet...

10:34 AM
Pretty sure my router caps me down at 11MB/s
and then my ISP's speed ain't great so I don't get anywhere near that
Yeah, looking at right around 10Mbps (2.5MB/s) right now

@ArtOfCode you lucky lucky person
I get really excited when I reach 1mb/s

1 millibit per second? ;)

1MB/s*
But it's not the speed that matters, we only get 16GB per month to share between a family of 4

@angussidney mate
I used 239GB last month and that was a slow one

Ouch. I used to be on 50GB/mo for 4 people, and that was difficult.
Let's see what I've used recently...

We would get more, in fact there are plans cheaper than ours for unlimited data on ADSL, but we are stuck with 4G mobile broadband so....

One of the few things I need from my apartment is decent, unlimited internet

@Magisch Do you live in heaven?
@angussidney A slower internet than mine? What are you? Australian?

December '07, we used 0.416GB, between 4 people, in the entire month.

yah

so what will happen?
will it mean we have hoards of people in here :/

Nobody knows yet
A CM is coming over to find out whats possible

@Yvette I think the idea is that we want to prevent that

They're kicking off the next SE Quality Project in a few weeks' time, and spam filters are part of that - but so that they can be prepared, they're gonna come have a chat with us before they kick the project off. That'll be this week or next week.

10:47 AM
@angussidney thank God

Yeah

ok
I'd like to attend that meeting too if that's ok

In short: they want to explore what options are possible for integrating the Smokey system with SE native systems.

as an avid smokey fan

I hope the next quality project is fixing the #docsrepgateapocolypse

10:48 AM
@Yvette yeah, I'd like to see as many of us here as possible - that means more ideas. But fair warning: it's likely to be in the UTC 1400-2200 range, which is the middle of the night for you

yeh and I'm never here at that time ;)

I still have a (perhaps irrational) fear that making the smokey project more official will mean that I'll fall by the wayside in the process, which would be sad because killing spam quickly is one of my high points in boring days of code reviewing and programming

@Magisch it won't mean that. I'm gonna work to keep all our non-mod people involved as much as possible. You lot make up the backbone of the Smokey system.

@ArtOfCode what day is it?

TBD

10:51 AM

OT, BTW: We're having a fine discussion on meta.chem about flagging answers.
@Nij the main problem here is that the label isn't exactly representative of all VLQ posts, and there are other posts that aren't VLQ but the label fits to. Take spam as an example. While no amount of editing will make spam legitimate content, VLQ is not the flag option I go for when seeing spam. Frankly, the labels mean nothing at all compared to how members have established the usage of pretty much any function in an SE site. The main reason that your flag got declined was that the post attempted to answer the question, and this is sufficient reason not to delete it. — TIPS 57 secs ago
