Q: Computer won't boot without external hard drive (now won't boot at all "Boot Device Not Found")

Scott GThe hardware involved is a Spectre x360 laptop (running windows 10 - at least it was :[ ) and 1TB WD Passport Ultra External Hard drive. Scenario: I am attempting to create a external hard drive with a portable Ubuntu (no ties to the hard drive of the laptop). Visiting the forum pages and atte...

So, there's been a lot of riff raff in my area lately about "jailbroken" FireTV Sticks...

user139252
There's a guy who's charging people $40 to side-load Kodi with SilenceROM and Firestarter. A process that takes a total of 5 minutes (I timed it myself last night) and requires no root access of any kind.

Is that like the Amazon Swindle?

@Rinzwind I can only count to 3

@TheBrownOne Sounds like the next Steve Jobs.

8:05 PM
@JacobVlijm I can count to 200 once a day :=D

user139252
@Seth It's a little $39, Android/Fire OS powered HDMI streaming stick

emails RMS so it gets a nickname

user139252
Because it's Android, all you have to do is adb connect Fire.IP.Address && adb install kodi.apk && adb install firestarter.apk

@Rinzwind I know you can, and you're doing it a lot lately :)

user139252
I can't believe he's charging people basically the cost of a new stick just to do that.

8:07 PM
@TheBrownOne hey! I charge 100 euro to clean windows systems :=D
I have not gotten 100 euro in 2 years to do that so I am happy :D

lol
@TheBrownOne He read Steve Jobs' biography.

oh getting interesting *o* chelsea 1-1 <3

Sigh... I'd need 26 more points today to reach 200 again after quite a long break... But there are no good questions any more :-/

ha! I am on 255 <3

8:15 PM
-_-

wait its a dupe :P

@Rinzwind shame on you.

@ByteCommander there :=)
@JacobVlijm 100 from a bounty :D

@Rinzwind that means you can still go for 45!

anyone know if this comment from me is correct: askubuntu.com/questions/743989/…
@JacobVlijm more cuz I got accepted in them too

8:19 PM
@Rinzwind :)

chilling in the chats!

Many thanks btw! :) Now I can fully enjoy Doctor Who

@ByteCommander Blink! best episode ever

From which season is that?

8:24 PM

BYE!
@KalamalkaKid anyone in blue but seth is not responding at the moment :D

we are on it ty

@Rinzwind you just can't see me ;)

Darn, I lost 15 points when they moved my answer to another question. Consolidating does that. Now I am going to have to lose sleep tonight. :P

8:37 PM
@Terrance what was the answer?

@JacobVlijm It's not a big deal. I was just commenting. ;) But here it is askubuntu.com/a/742602/231142

@Terrance oops, my fingers are too large for this tablet screen :) I slipped.

I try not to lose sleep (unless my dogs are waking me up at 3 am ;-)
@JacobVlijm :D Thank you!

Don't mention it, it's a good answer.

user139252
I haven't run into any "tests" in the review queue for a while now... am I finally trusted?

8:43 PM
@JacobVlijm =)

@TheBrownOne no, they gave up :)

user139252
@JacobVlijm Python genius, is this a good way to handle what I'm doing there? Or could that script be improved?

@TheBrownOne haha, I will have to look at it tomorrow, this screen is too small to notice where it starts :)

kos
@TheBrownOne I have almost 500 reviews in close votes... they reviewed me twice in the space of 5 votes earlier

Bye people, see you later 😴

user139252
8:49 PM
@JacobVlijm Auf wiedersehen!

kos
Bye @JacobVlijm

user136984
@jokerdino: Bye! :)

user136984
I'm thinking of purging xorg by the way...

user139252
OFF WITH IT'S HEAD!

user139252
Or will you just be using something other than xorg to handle GUI?

8:59 PM
@JacobVlijm Have a great one!

user136984
9:13 PM
@TheBrownOne *ITS :P

user136984
@TheBrownOne No the point is is that I'm getting rid of the GUI, not replacing it with another... :D

@ParanoidPanda pinged the wrong person? :P

user136984
@Seth: Facepalm... I almost pinged Byte, then I thought I changed it to the right one, but apparently not... :D

user136984
@jokerdino: Not bye to you!

user136984
@JacobVlijm: Bye to you! :D

user136984
9:16 PM
@Seth: Now they're going to be awfully confused when they come back... :D

I am always confused. :D

user136984
@Seth: One of the devs for gnome-shell told me I could contact him about any questions to do with it and the bug... He said to contact him on IRC... But he hasn't been there at all today! :D

@Seth thoughts on my handling of askubuntu.com/a/743818/158442?

@ParanoidPanda Are you sure?

user136984
@Seth: Yes, well that's what he said anyway...

9:24 PM
no I mean the online part.
@muru welllllllllllll
I will have to talk to you about that later, but it did raise a complaint. I haven't investigated yet though. Too busy atm.

user136984
@Seth: Online part? Oh you mean him not being online?

yeah

@Seth later, then.

user136984
Well, I've pinged him several times on different channels and there hasn't yet been any response though his username is registered there... Is there something I'm missing?

I dunno. Is he online?
I mean, in the channel.

user136984
9:30 PM
@Seth: His name shows in the right hand bar (in XChat), but no little green light to indicate he is actually online there...

@ParanoidPanda the green light is for ops, it doesn't signify if someone is online.

@muru I am on your side on that one. Sometimes you have to learn how to take constructive criticism. When I first started here, I thought the same thing about just trying to help, but over a little bit of time, it became clear to me that others, like yourself, were just trying to help me. =)

Is his name a different shade of grey from the other users?

user136984
@Seth: Some of them are grey, some of them are black, his is black.

user136984
All I know is he's not responding...

9:32 PM
@Terrance thanks, but of late, I have been getting into one too many fights. Sometimes intentional, but that instance wasn't.

Hard to know probably, there's at least 50 shades of gray
@Terrance same conclusion that i came to over time, and nowadays i don't take downgoats that strongly to the heart

Any Chromium users here?

raising hand

Need to confirm the gsettings part in askubuntu.com/a/744010/158442
I tested that entirely with Chrome

@muru Well, you haven't with me at all. I have been taking to knowledge the things that you have been commenting to me. I think you are doing a good job. =)

9:33 PM
@muru confirmed long before you asked

@Serg Same here. Although I have not had any downgoats for a long time. :P

i did gsettings list-recursively | grep chrome
no result

@Terrance thanks.
@Serg just to be sure, anything for chromium?
(Shouldn't be)

@muru correction : gsettings list-recursively | grep chrom
Nothing matched
so neither chromium nor chrome use gsettings

Excellent. I'll just move it to the bottom of the pile.

9:37 PM
@ParanoidPanda Well be patient then.

user136984
@Seth: Never! >:P

lol

@muru you might be onto something with those json policies . . . There is ExtensionInstallForcelist policy in the documentation. Might be what's needed

@Serg Oh dammit. I completely missed the point of themes being like extensions.
I just wrote the answer as a general post on forcing Chrome config

Still it's a gold-ton of information

user136984
9:42 PM
@Rinzwind: Did you get my 100 bounty by the way? :)

user136984
I'm sure I gave it to you but I can't remember now...

I sometimes think "Will I ever get my life in order ? " . Judging from my room . . . probably not any time soon . . .

kos
9:56 PM
@cl-netbox Ok, I tried -vga qxl... Well it didn't fix the slow start, however it fixed the jittery mouse for good! Now it's super fluid. But now I get graphical artifacts. :'(

Q: Macbook pro sd card reader doesn't work with Ubuntu 14.01

kittahI have a macbook pro retina, the newest model. I used rEFind to dual-boot Ubuntu 14.01, but the sd card reader doesn't recognize the card. Is there a fix for that? Thanks. The /dev doesn't recognize anything. It's probably a driver issue. p.s. To admins: I asked the same question earlier in an a...

@Serg haha, same here :P

the struggle of our modern lives :) Anyway . . . I wonder how my lab partners are doing there . . . probably already anxious about the lab report . . .

user136984
10:18 PM
Does anyone know what http://ubuntu.slack.com/ is by the way? And why it has known JS malware detected on it?

@ParanoidPanda haha it's legit

no malware.

Slack is like a team chat

It's the official ubuntu slack channel.
well, as official as it gets.

yup

user136984
10:19 PM
@Seth @Serg: So what's this about then?

I can give you an invite if you want, but it's pretty dead.
@ParanoidPanda lol

T_T I wish I could be an Ubuntu member and stuff . . . but I'm not cool enough yet

It's calling the official slack client for OSX malware.
You can't just trust everything you read online. It's obviously not malware..
2

user136984
@Seth: Oh dear... :D

@Serg you don't need to be a member to join the slack channel, they just haven't set up global access yet.

10:21 PM
@Seth maybe they distrust closed source stuff. :P

(slack doesn't support it natively so it is kind of a pain to setup)

@Seth had to star it just for the words "You cannot trust everything you read online"

@Seth didn't someone start a mattermost channel?

@muru well seeing as the site itself is closed source and paid... that doesn't make much sense :P
@muru yeah there's also a mattermost channel. That's even more dead though.
(also mattermost isn't that nice)

Well, you know, pot, kettle, etc.
@Seth It is getting quick development. Since it's bundled with Gitlab, I'm hoping for good things from it.

10:23 PM
The reason a slack channel was created was (apparently) mostly because a lot of people that wanted to participate in juju charming automatically assumed there was a slack channel, so Jorge decided to create one and mess around and possibly use it for something useful.

@Seth well, i'm speaking specifically about ubuntu membership, like NathanOsman has . . . Dont pay attention to me, i am just being overly dramatic here at not having the "top level dev" status . . . .

@muru that's nice. I won't really care until it gets a native client though. Not a fan of using web clients.
@Serg I understand :)
Ubuntu Membership isn't related to dev stuff btw ;)

Doesn't it require some form of significant contribution ?

well if you want an invite into the deadness that is the ubuntu slack channel, ping me.
@Serg yes, but it doesn't have to be dev work. I am an Ubuntu member and I've done hardly any dev work on Ubuntu. Just 2 patches and a little work on a 3rd.

@Rinzwind :D

10:28 PM
@ParanoidPanda I just noticed that the site you linked is sitecheck.sucurity.net . . . . Sorry but I probably wouldn't trust them will so much if they spell security as sucurity :/

@Serg :-) You're welcome!

user136984
@Seth: The Ubuntu GNOME dev team leader says he's going to invite me. :)

@ByteCommander Having a look...

@ParanoidPanda cool!

user136984
@Serg: It's "sucuri". That's their company name. :P

10:29 PM
oh I see there is a new gnome channel on the team.

user136984
It's not a misspelling...

@Serg sucuri, without the ty

user136984
@Seth: So you might see me there talking about the gnome-shell bug! ;)

indeed!

user136984
@muru @Serg: Yeah, I think it's meant to be like that.

10:30 PM
@ParanoidPanda you found a bug? What does it do?

OK . . . .but still . . . yew . . . what kind of naming is that ?
@muru it allows pandas to take over gnome user interface :p jk of course

user136984
@muru: It's not very interesting, but basically if you are on the GNOME login screen and you close your laptop lid and suspend it, when you wake it back up again even though nobody is logged in, the shutdown button is no longer available so if you don't have your login details, you're in trouble...

user136984
Anyway, they asked me if I wanted to have a go fixing it, so I did 6 hours straight of a JS course and now I'm trying to fix it (I knew nothing about JS before yesterday)...

user136984
But I would like to ask them something about the code and functions because there is no documentation and no commenting in the code basically so in some places it is hard to understand what is happening...

user136984
@Serg Yeah, that just about sums it up. :P

10:35 PM
Plase VTC as bug. See Doug's comment

@Fabby meh, the answer seems fine.
"It would appear to be a bug, use an older kernel".
Has anyone reported it yet? I haven't seen an official bug report, just rumours.

user136984
10:49 PM
@Seth: It really is a useful little thing (slack), I just created an account there and it looks really nice! :)

@Seth please delete mine then before someone fails to read your comment and acts on mine... ;-)

@ParanoidPanda it's not bad :)
@Fabby do you agree with me?
or are you just saying that because I am a "moderator"?

@Seth :D I'm too tired to do any decent research, so I'll bow to your wisdom...

user136984
Getting late...

(so, not because you're a moderator!)
;-)

user136984
10:56 PM
Goodnight! :)

@ParanoidPanda Pumpkin!
:D

@ParanoidPanda btw, your full name and email are visible on your slack profile.. Dunno if there are privacy settings for that or not but thought I'd let you know.
(in case you care).
My name is popular enough it doesn't mean much and my email can be grabbed from GitHub anyway so..

Yeah. That or launchpad commits.

user139252
I forgot how fun Twilight Princess was

11:43 PM
@TheBrownOne cluster down?
(hi BTW...)
@TheBrownOne Power problems?

user139252
@Fabby Not sure what happened, I'll be checking in about 15 minutes when I get home

@TheBrownOne Ah, because I have a fancy new idea for the contact details page!
(and want to share)

@hbdgaf check this out, looks like there are some available in a decent price range:

user139252
Alright!

11:55 PM
@TheBrownOne ping me when you do (and if you've got 10 min to spare)

still no internet @Mateo?
