3:00 PM
I will smile at my friend
I will sneer at my opponent

Yes.

I will grin when I am in success

Jez
sneer is a rather particular way of looking at someone
more dismissive than aggressive

@Jez Yeah. Like with a wrinkled nose.

I will beam at when I am in week end party
I will smirk at some one whose work failed to me impress
Am I correct
?

3:03 PM
Yeah, that seems about right.

can smirk and sneer are interchangeable?

They are similar.

Jez

Sneer is more demeaning.

Jez
unfortunately I didn't get close enough to that lorry, but it has written in the dirt "do not clean. potatoes planted"

3:04 PM
Smirk is smug.

I am sorry. Still confusing

"You think you're so great," he sneered, "but you are a rat in a maze."
"I would have done my homework if someone hadn't thrown my books in the garbage," she smirked.

so sneering is to offending

Jez
smirk

smirking is defending?

Jez
3:06 PM

A smirk is more like an "I told you so" kind of smile.

Jez
sneer

Good pics, @Jez.
Yeah, @Hanu, you could think of it like that.

and what abt diff b/w grin and beam
are they interchangeable?

Grin is playful, beam is more just joyous.
"Beam" is not often used that way either.

3:10 PM
Login authentication ain't what it used to be.

Still having problems?

@Jez Somehow there ought to be a word that combines sneer and pure evil, and that is the word that would describe the Cheney pic.

There need to be discuss about laugh and other related words
I will come back soon

Cheney's sneer is like a shotgun blast to the face.

Sorry for going for a while
If somebody plays a joke in a group, I will be grinned

3:21 PM
You will grin.

How ever, If I enjoys the party then I will have beam on my face
Am I correct?

You will beam.
I am beaming with joy. Think of beam like a ray of light.

OK
Now the lets talk about differences between laugh, chuckle, giggle, titter, simper, snicker, snigger.
I will laugh when I hear joke

A chuckle is a belly laugh, deep and genuine.
Giggles are silly.
Titters are nervous laughs.
Simper is hmm. Simpering is ingratiating and annoying.
Snicker and snigger are almost identical, and are demeaning.

I will chuckle when some body plays joke on my boss in his and my presence
How ever I don't want to show that
*that means = that laugh

3:29 PM
Haha
Probably not.

:(

I mean, you probably don't want your boss to hear you chuckle at his misfortune.

So the suppressing laugh is called chuckle
Am I correct?

Hmm. I never thought of it that way. Let me think.

@Jez s/women/people/g

Jez
3:33 PM
@Mitch not me. i'm not gonna say "i can't wait to meet you again" if i don't mean it.

Maybe she meant it when she wrote it.
@Hanu I think yes, that's probably true.

So to describe suppressing laugh I use chuckle

Yeah, I think so. It's not a laugh out loud kind of laugh.
It's a through the nose kind of laugh.

Jez
@KitFox if that's true I'd say she's emotionally unstable if she can change away from it so rapidly

@Jez Or you did something in between that creeped her out.

3:35 PM
I will play joke on my friend, and I giggle

@Hanu Maybe. Are you a girl?

@Jez well, some people are just trying to be polite.

Giggling is kind of girlish.

Jez
@Mitch that's not being polite. you don't have to say that

@KitFox or little kid.

3:37 PM
@Mitch Yes. Or little kid. Although men do it too sometimes and it's really endearing.

@KitFox: I am a boy.

Giggling is kind of a "hee hee hee" behind your hand.

So my sister do some silly mistake, when I look at her seriously, she will giggle at me

Yes.
She puts her brussel sprouts on your plate when you aren't looking, then she giggles.

Titter are also same as giggle rt?

3:39 PM
Titter is nervous.
"So who here wants to talk about sex?" the teacher asked.
The students tittered, but no one raised their hand.

Got it
When I met my best friend after longtime. I simped at him while giving hug
*simper at him

Hmm. "Simper" is not a common word, but it is more like...
The monkey simpered about, trying to make the crowd laugh.
Come to think of it, it's not really a vocalization.

OK

"simpering idiots" is where you usually see it used.

What about snicker

3:43 PM
A jester simpers.
Snicker is derisive laugh. A push of air through the nose to indicate disdain.
For instance.

So, I make my enemy to loose and I will sincker

Hmm. Or maybe that's more of a snort or a scoff.

@KitFox really? I just made a comment on Hanu's question that simpering is closer to crying.

@Hanu Yes.

almost like sulking.

3:45 PM
@Mitch You're confusing it with whimpering. Simpering is silly and ingratiating.
...or maybe I've got it wrong. Let me look it up.

@KitFox Oh. yeah. but still...
"Smile in an affectedly coquettish, coy, or ingratiating manner."
Yuck
you're right.

It has snicker and snigger as synonyms. Huh.

reminder: stand up straight, don't simper

Snigger has also same meaning. Does they are interchangeable?

anyway, back to sex... sniggering all around

3:48 PM
Sniggering is sort of contemptuous.
Simpering is more like trying to get someone to like you by mocking other people.

simpering is for wimps. sniggering is for little boys who just heard about sex.

simper fi.

Hi chatkillah.
;-)

Thank you @KitFox. Really thank you so much

i read that as 'cat killer'. That's not nice. you probably snigger when you do that.

3:50 PM
@Hanu No problem. I think you can understand why chat is better for these sort of questions.

@KitFox hello santafox!

So next time onwards, I can directly come to chat room and ask questions before posting questions in SE

@Hanu Yep.

The main sight isn't for back and forth just straight (attempts at) answers. Chat is fo discussion.
except when it's for messing around.

@cornbreadninja Would you like to sit on my lap and have your picture taken?

3:51 PM
@KitFox are you gonna put it on the internets?

@cornbreadninja Probably not.

@Hanu yep. don't be put off by totally irrelevant discussion.

@KitFox okay.

Excellent.

I think you (@KitFox and @Cerberus) though truthful, may be misleading about @Jez. He wants something, but it just turns out the women he's around just don't want that.

3:55 PM
That's true. I don't mean to mislead. But he has some problem, either in the way he's finding women (poor matches) or the way he's pursuing them (poor interactions). It's been ongoing for years and it is causing him distress.

Is there any way to save chats about this topic only?

You can create a bookmark, or use a keyword that will make it easier for you to search later.

OK

@Hanu you can create a special case chat room, but that is not as likely to get people to talk about it. You probably want more people to chime in.

Oh right. That too. Well, he can't create rooms yet.
But he could ask one of us to do it.

4:02 PM
@KitFox but all this talk about therapy and stuff seems so ... extreme, when his problems seem to be like what everybody has.

@Mitch Have you know Jez long?

(until they don't)
@KitFox good point...I don't know anything other than a few things he's said in the past couple weeks.
and then very superficially.

He's extremely unhappy with his situation and pretty self-defeating.

but that doesn't seem totally out of the ordinary. lot's of guys (and girls too) are like that.

He needs to find a fixer kind of girlfriend.

4:05 PM
!!
Great idea for a TV show.
'The fixer'
Could also be called 'The Doormat' by another interpretation!

I suggested a mail-order bride.
I think it is a great solution for him.
Also, hookers.

Makes arranged marriages sound like a nice alternative (that problem with that is that it's your -parent's- doing the arranging...what a nightmare!)
@KitFox Yuck. ell..maybe it works for some people.

Well, it's difficult for him to meet people because he's got social anxiety and he's a recluse.

@KitFox hm.. that sounds like the arranged marriage without the parents. Win-win!

He doesn't want to waste time on anything that isn't right.

4:07 PM
How much reputation is need in order to create chat room?

@KitFox like a transaction.

@Hanu I can't remember and I can't seem to find it.
Not a lot.

OK

@Mitch Misleading in which line exactly?

Jez
@KitFox isn't "right"?

4:12 PM
@Hanu 100 I think...

Q: "Newbie" doesn't have enough reputation to talk in chat

I have another question. Can I discuss now?

@Jez Maybe I'm mistaken. I thought you said you invested in relationships quickly.
@Hanu I'm going out for lunch, but these guys can maybe help.

Jez
@KitFox i don't understand what you mean by "isn't right" though.

Q: What is the correct pronunciation of "Regex"?

CthulhuThe term Regular Expression is often shortened to Regex. What is the the correct pronunciation of the g in Regex. Is it g like in gallium or g like in giraffe? I've heard it said both ways.

Who the Eff cares?

@Cerberus looking back at the conversation (it has taken me that long) I find that...

4:17 PM
Euh, dear.
I didn't mean to put you through that.

@Hanu go for it. (but there's no guarantee that anyone will be interested or have the time (I may have to run))
@Cerberus well...I wouldn't do it if I wasn't actively trying to avoid other things!
yey for exclamation points!

Wise.

Today's goal...make everything end with an exclamation point, and reasonably so... and.. and...I -know I can do it so go me!
anyway...
shit!
oh save!

Yes.

@Cerberus anyway...rereading, I find that nothing anybody was saying was misleading, there's the unsaid conversation going on of cultural expectations, maybe that's what I found misleading and annoying...that one is required to do this stupid dance that Jez doesn't like because it is not successful for him in getting what he wants.

4:26 PM
What is the correct pronunciation of "Go eff yourseff"? Is it like a J as in jam or a G as in Gargantuan?

@Robusto "I care"

@Mitch I didn't read the entire conversation either.
Stupid dances are bad.
But I am not in favour of the the fully direct route.

@Robusto imdb.com/title/tt0076759/quotes (for the I care reference, that the G or J thing)

@Jez Because you invest quickly and then you're pissed when it isn't right and say it is all a waste of time.

@Cerberus but that veers off in to the 'Liaisons dangereuse' territory.playing the game for sport.
Han Solo: It is for *me*, sister. Look, I ain't in this for your revolution, and I'm not in it for you, Princess. I expect to be well paid. *I'm* in it for the money.
Princess Leia: You needn't worry about your reward. If money is all that you love, then that's what you'll receive.
[to Luke]
Princess Leia: Your friend is quite the mercenary. I wonder if he really cares about anything. Or anybody.
[she stalks out]
Luke: [calling after her] I care.

4:33 PM
@Mitch Not exactly. The essential premise is that nobody likes being told "your nose is to big and your breasts too small; your intelligence is only mediocre; and your mother's furniture is ineffably hideous. Therefore I will pick the other girl I'm dating over you, who has noticeably bigger breasts." Vice versa, nobody likes being told that. Hence people do not want to be very open about how they feel about the other party while in the exploratory phase; greater openness comes later.

@KitFox isn't there a scene in (the movie version of) "A Brave New World" where some woman is annoyed that the protagonist doesn't want to hook up with her because basically it's rude not to when someone says "let's hook up" because the culture in the future was 'every night a different partner'.

Of course the game shouldn't be any gamier than necessary.

@Cerberus and also her mom is hot.

And leading someone on is a real no-no.
@Mitch Possibly.
No doubt you have more experience.

@Mitch I think Jez has some deep issues and it's making him unhappy. If the problem is the culture, then he needs to adapt or find a new one.

4:36 PM
@Cerberus but sometimes what is perceived as 'leading on' is really just politeness/courtesy, not wanting to say no to your face...oh...that -is- what you're saying.
@Cerberus Ha ha!
No.

Jez
@KitFox no, i'm pissed when they stop talking to me
not quite the same thing

Did you go on more than one date?

Jez
no

Then really you need to just get over it.

@Jez could be that you have to keep asking over and over?

4:37 PM
@Mitch Yes, it's not always easy to navigate.
@Mitch No!
Cut your losses.

user19161
I decided to drop by and post an answer just now on the "default" question...

This reminds me of one of my favorite cartoons. A guy is lying in bed attempting to masturbate, and his penis is saying, "Not tonight, dear, I have a headache."

oops. I shouldn't give advice. stick to meta-advice. and exclamation points!

@Robusto Hahaha

what is being discussed? Cliff notes?

4:38 PM
@JasperLoy There's a default questions?

user19161
Also @kitfox you look very cute in that Christmas hat. But many of the people over on Math have put on a hat too!

user19161
@Mitch Yes, a few minutes ago.

@JohanLarsson No. Jez's love life.

Hello.

@KitFox Or lack thereof.

user19161
4:39 PM
Jez Believe.

Q: Correct way of saying I want a list of the names of each individual entity in a group?

Adam SmithI'm a programmer and in a program I'm currently creating, I want to get a list of all the accounts names that can access a database. I have no idea if I'm supposed to "get account names", to "get accounts name" or to "get accounts names". My best guess is that "get accounts names" is the correc...

Is it possible to express how little I care about this?

Jez
@Robusto now that's a problem that I don't have. In that instance, the wife is CONSTANTLY begging me for sex.

@JasperLoy hm..semantics is hard. different populations...technical terms...maybe default -does- work for 'normal' people.

Q: Word for mammary intercourse in different countries

DuopixelI'm not sure this question is appropriate for SE Linguistics, feel free to close it if you feel it does not belong here. Some years ago I noticed an interesting pattern in the vernacular word for mammary intercourse, in Mexico we call it a "Russian", Spaniards call it a "Cuban" and Italians call...

user19161
@Robusto My reply would be "it must be tonight then, because such things are good for headaches, QED".

user19161
4:41 PM
@Mitch I use it all the time myself.

@Robusto Yes. "I could care less" because it means there are turtles all the way down.

user19161
@Cerberus What's mammary intercourse?

@JasperLoy You talk to your penis?

> Jury finds iPhone infringes Nokia, Sony patents owned by “troll”
Funny.

@JasperLoy that would be logical but that's not really what is meant by I have a head ache.

user19161
4:41 PM
@Robusto No, it talks to me.

Jez
@Cerberus old news. or new olds.

@JasperLoy Well...it can only be one thing.
@Jez Not to me!

@JasperLoy Glad we cleared that up.

@Cerberus yeah that's a good one for urban dictionary's chat room.

We don't call it a "French"!

4:43 PM
@Mitch Indeed.

@KitFox that's what the picture says.

@Cerberus You can have a gloat, but this is still bad news.

"Frenching" just means making out with tongues.

user19161
I should change my blue square to a red square or green square for the festive season.

@JasperLoy Or stripes maybe.

4:45 PM
@JasperLoy candy cane colored

@Robusto Well, in what way? We already knew the system sucked, and this way perhaps people at Apple will realise how badly it sucks and perhaps revert to the Good Side.

jinx
@Cerberus google is the one that's not 'evil'

Jez
aren't they too big?

Apple's support for the Good Side would add some extra weight to the scale.

@Jez Jesus.

4:46 PM
@Cerberus I predict Apple will die pretty quickly, starting now

@Mitch The less evil side, yes.

Flags hooooooooooooooo

@Jez No, you've got the wrong idea.

@JohanLarsson I predict it will die slowly, having started a year or so ago.

user19161
Hush hush, we've got flags.

4:47 PM
Silly flags.

I invalidated one flag.

It's when the breasts are used to stimulate the penis.

s/t// ftfy

@JohanLarsson yeah. weird. they were below the radar for so long, then hit a home run with the ipod idphone ipad and now it may turn back.

user19161
The worst thing I have said here is "This looks like my balls!"

4:48 PM
If Apple won't turn around, the more scandalous the lawsuits, the sooner more people will realise the system is bad.

@JasperLoy flagged !

I love feeling like a super hero when I swoop in to respond to a flag. And by respond, I mean coming in and saying something about flags.

@Mitch Market share v. Android has already been in decline for a while.

Hi @Origami.

user19161
@Mitch Another one was "I am completely naked now!"

4:49 PM
@OrigamiRobot Hi!

@OrigamiRobot yay superheroes. You mean talking about flags is a superpower?

@Mitch I think all the lawsuit nonsense has hurt them really bad, both in the eyes of the public and all the resources they have spent on it

@OrigamiRobot Have you validated or invalidated any flags?
@JohanLarsson Absolutely.

user19161
Well, I think it would be a good idea to cut down on the language though.

Before that, I just thought of them as silly and overpriced, like Louis Vuitton.

4:50 PM
@JasperLoy You should be flagged in real life for that. Nakedness is not allowed.

user19161
We don't want to attract too much attention from aliens.

@Cerberus I never respond to them in time because I join the room first. If I act on them first, the flag goes away and I get no super hero feelings.

Now I think of Apple mainly as a troll. Of course their attempts to make jailbreaking illegal didn't help.

Well, that was ridiculous.

@OrigamiRobot Understood.
As in, I know what you mean.

4:51 PM
We were discussing a slang term.

I invalidated you.
What happens when a flag is validated?
When does one get suspended?

who was flagged and for what?

For the tits thing.

@Cerberus I don't know which is worse: talking about sex obliquely through tech talk like 'jailbreaking' or explicit talk.

user19161
It's OK if one feels it should be validated too.

4:51 PM
@Cerberus I think it takes two validations?

Describing the linguistic and other details of mammary intercourse.

user19161
One gets at most a 30 min suspension from chat.

@Jez was just asking me what I meant.

I thought it just auto deletes the item?

@Mitch Umm well, what would you have me say, with all them chastity belts people wear these days?

4:52 PM
@JasperLoy Longer for repeat offenses.

@Cerberus All it does is affirm the misuse of patent law.

Jez
well, as was said earlier, i certainly haven't ever heard that referred to as a "French"

And for the record, if anyone has issues with the words, you can speak up.

@OrigamiRobot Ah OK. But then why does the flag disappear for me when someone else invalidates it first?

user19161
The most shocking thing is that a mod on math has been suspended for a year, this is drama to me.

4:53 PM
@Mitch And suspends the users from chat.

@JasperLoy anon?

@Cerberus we could talk about the chastity belts? that's titillating enough. or pun enough to keep abreast of the conversation.

user19161
@JohanLarsson anon is not a moderator.

@Cerberus I fear you have taken my response as an indication of knowledge. This is rarely ever the case.

@Robusto Yes, but affirmation is what some parties need to fully realise it. And I'd rather have it affirmed against Apple than against some company I would buy products from.

4:53 PM
@KitFox oh. so you deleted your own post?

@Mitch No.

@JasperLoy Why was he suspended?

and who was it?

@KitFox Just as I thought. So...does this happen after a single validation?
@OrigamiRobot Haha noted.

@Cerberus I don't know.

user19161
4:54 PM
@Cerberus Well, the details are not exactly known, but there was some conflict with the other mods.

@Cerberus Jez's comment was flagged twice.

@Mitch Ehm yes, let's keep abreast of things.

@Cerberus You think that will stop the trolls? It won't. And now that it's been affirmed again in court, future actions against such laws will be moot, because of in stare decisis.

@KitFox Hmm so several flags are needed perhaps?
@JasperLoy Hmm odd.

@Cerberus Or a mod. Or enough validation.

4:56 PM
@Robusto Stare in decisis? Instare decisis?

@Cerberus I could look it up on MSO, but I expended my entire effort reserve joining this room to fuss at people about flags.

user19161
@Cerberus Well, it's a year because he was suspended before too for other things, so the period increases. Nonetheless he is a great contributor.

@OrigamiRobot We should have @Gnome here.

@KitFox OK...so can several people validate the same flag? So it only disappears when it is invalidated?

It would be a party.

user19161
4:56 PM
There are now almost no flags from the math room after having many flags last month.

@Cerberus OK, stare decisis.
:Not to be confused with "". In common law legal systems, a precedent or authority is a principle or rule established in a previous legal case that is either binding on or persuasive for a court or other tribunal when deciding subsequent cases with similar issues or facts. The general principle in common law legal systems is that similar cases should be decided so as to give similar and predictable outcomes, and the principle of precedent is the mechanism by which that goal is attained. Black's Law Dictionary defines "precedent" as a "rule of law established for the first time by a court...

@OrigamiRobot You are excused.

Just call it precedent.

@Cerberus Just go look it up. I don't really know for sure.

@KitFox Do not speaketh of him, lest he appear.

user19161
4:57 PM
Is there an @kde?

@OrigamiRobot I like Gnome. You guys give him way too hard a time.

I think people dislike puns because they are never funny

@Robusto Ah, that makes more sense. Yes, in the short term, it is bad; but eventually we need this to escalate even further, not remain at the same semi-bearable level.

user19161
Is there anyone here with Windows 8?

@KitFox No never mind, I thought in case you knew.

4:58 PM
@KitFox My portion is all in jest. He just doesn't always realize it and I am too mean to spell it out for him.
That said, he often repeats the same mistakes.

Well, youth and all.

You silly humans and your aging.

@JohanLarsson they are funny, but only for kids and foreigners who just learned the words.
@OrigamiRobot you...you...aliens and your... not aging.
