@Cerberus 'Dated' is a colocate that's often used in combination with 'graphics'. It seems to be a simple word substitution for obsolecent in those contexts. As in, things aren't done the way they would have been done at that specified point in time (or date if you rather) anymore because of technological advancements which yield observably superior results.

@Cerberus What constitutes superiority is a little tricky. It depends upon both your goals and your preferences, which renders it as a concept which is simultaneously objective and subjective. During the mid-1990s through to about 2008 older pixelated games were considered dated, since they aren't quite as realistic as three-dimensionally rendered imagery. However in more recent years it is generally thought that the games from the early 1990s held up better than early three-dimensional ones.

So now you have games which seek to emulate the timeless aesthetic style of the early 1990s (Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Turbographix 16), and the original Playstation and Nintendo 64 era graphics are now considered "dated" for the time being, even though they are newer.

@Cerberus I'm not so sure that's the sole contributing factor. Even in literature, literary critics sometimes comment upon obsolecent or dated notions, most particularly those that they deem to be opressive by today's standards.

@Cerberus Perhaps you wouldn't, but I think the point is that it's a judgement call being made. Few people would dare to call Shakespeare dated for instance, yet some people would make the argument.

@Cerberus I'm not so sure. The fact of the matter, if there is even a fact to the matter, is somewhat irrelevant to the propriety of usage. What matters most regarding the usage of words is that people effectively have the means to communicate the thoughts that they wish to transmit. That somebody somehow came to the conclusion that Shakespeare is dated and wishes to share that sentiment is much more important in that respect, even in spite of his evident timelessness.

The sentiment is mistaken in such contexts.

Is it not unlike new cars, the dated aspect of special effects? As soon as you drive them off the lot, they decrease in value exponentially no matter the technology budget.

Communication, language in use, these aren't a category of special effects in my book.

In the case of the film Dune, I feel that it shows its age in a nice way, mostly.

@Tonepoet The only problem I have with the Getty is that their floors cause crepe soles to squeak. So you're looking at a work of art and people behind you keep going squeak-squeak-squeak as they pass by. Very distracting. But the art is terrific.
