@Cerberus 'Dated' is a colocate that's often used in combination with 'graphics'. It seems to be a simple word substitution for obsolecent in those contexts. As in, things aren't done the way they would have been done at that specified point in time (or date if you rather) anymore because of technological advancements which yield observably superior results.

@Tonepoet Yes; by "I wonder about", I meant "I wonder why people use it in certain contexts".
Your definition is accurate.

@Cerberus What constitutes superiority is a little tricky. It depends upon both your goals and your preferences, which renders it as a concept which is simultaneously objective and subjective. During the mid-1990s through to about 2008 older pixelated games were considered dated, since they aren't quite as realistic as three-dimensionally rendered imagery. However in more recent years it is generally thought that the games from the early 1990s held up better than early three-dimensional ones.
So now you have games which seek to emulate the timeless aesthetic style of the early 1990s (Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Turbographix 16), and the original Playstation and Nintendo 64 era graphics are now considered "dated" for the time being, even though they are newer.

@Tonepoet Quite so.
In the nascent field of computer games, old is still ugly.
In many other spheres, though, this is not so.

1:12 AM
@Cerberus I'm not so sure that's the sole contributing factor. Even in literature, literary critics sometimes comment upon obsolecent or dated notions, most particularly those that they deem to be opressive by today's standards.

1:25 AM
@Tonepoet I doubt whether I would find that a suitable context.

@Cerberus Perhaps you wouldn't, but I think the point is that it's a judgement call being made. Few people would dare to call Shakespeare dated for instance, yet some people would make the argument.

@Tonepoet Exactly: it can be nonsense.
A more precise qualification is preferable.

1:47 AM
@Cerberus I'm not so sure. The fact of the matter, if there is even a fact to the matter, is somewhat irrelevant to the propriety of usage. What matters most regarding the usage of words is that people effectively have the means to communicate the thoughts that they wish to transmit. That somebody somehow came to the conclusion that Shakespeare is dated and wishes to share that sentiment is much more important in that respect, even in spite of his evident timelessness.

The sentiment is mistaken in such contexts.

@Cerberus Whether it is an honest mistake or an outright lie, I'd suppose you understand but have difficulty coming to terms with your understanding. XP

2:14 AM
@Cerberus Evening all. And the DUNE miniseries?
Is it not unlike new cars, the dated aspect of special effects? As soon as you drive them off the lot, they decrease in value exponentially no matter the technology budget.
Communication, language in use, these aren't a category of special effects in my book.

2:34 AM
@livresque Hmm I saw bits of that on Youtube. It looked rather bad?
@Tonepoet I understand what people intend to say, but I think they are mistaken in certain contexts.
In the case of the film Dune, I feel that it shows its age in a nice way, mostly.

@Cerberus Truer to the book, which is sometimes a plus. In the case of the David Lynch film, I can watch it only by ignoring my BG roots and the book(s) entirely.
I guess that's David Lynch for you. The best DUNE film was never made.

@Cerberus OMG it is so dated. no one talks about the wine-red sea anymore. so cliché

@livresque True to a book is often good. But somehow the deviations in the film didn't bother me too much.
BG?
I have read the book several times, and I think I have watched the film once.
But there was always some time in between.

@Mitch Dated, cliché, or future classic?

@Mitch I knew you were going to say that!

2:48 AM
@Cerberus Bene Gesserit.

Ahh.
You have Bene Gesserit roots? So you are in the breeding programme?

Talk about artificial languages, Herbert really did his homework.
Just a woman.

@livresque Oh, did he? I must say his names (people, places) mostly sounded good.
As opposed to those of e.g. Martin.

@Cerberus Fair enough. I always, preferred the Super Nintendo's pixelated graphics to anything the 1990s ever had to offer in terms of 3D rendering.

@livresque I see. So what is that about regarding the film?
@Tonepoet So absolute!

2:51 AM
@Cerberus As in ignoring how much I fell in love with the book in order to watch the David Lynch.
Super Nintendo is the only console I have. That looks good to me.

@livresque Hmm.
has no consoles.
By the way, don't forget to sign up for Latin!

Lack of consolation prize.
Ita vero!

Ita est!

@Cerberus I guess the film seems like David Lynch just read the back of the book and got halfway to Jodorowsky's canon, sic transit.
@Cerberus Time to get on the LatinTeach listserv and find Illa Flore.

What canon is that?
Welcome to Latin.SE!

Bonkers surrealist cinéaste.

Hmm.

Gratias tibi ago for reminding me.
Wheelock, Wheelock, Wheelock, that's all I want to post. The latest hardback edition weighs less than the paperback of a decade ago.

I have seen people refer to that book on the site.

@RegDwigнt: I wrote a comment on this question yesterday, but it seems to have been deleted. Any idea why?
@Tonepoet The only problem I have with the Getty is that their floors cause crepe soles to squeak. So you're looking at a work of art and people behind you keep going squeak-squeak-squeak as they pass by. Very distracting. But the art is terrific.

@Robusto I see a ton of deleted comments in response to a ton of flags.
Flags for using comments for providing an answer, or whatever the official wording of that thing is.
Next time just post some random quote from Trump or Putin or something. Those can never answer any question by definition, and so are immune to being deleted.
@Robusto to Getty's defense, that is not a problem with the Getty, that is a problem with people.
I'm not sure why they let those in anyway.
Also, why is there Tchernobyl vodka here. I specifically came here to hide from it.
It's all over my WhatsApp.

@Robusto That seems to be a commonly known museum phonomena. Some people (by which I mean me alone), suggest that it is really the sound of the spirits of Harlem Globetrotters from ages past pulling off one last prank with their basketball shoes. >_> <_<

@Robusto no idea why YouTube should recommend this to me. And no idea why I should recommend it to you. So I'll just leave it here and that is all.
Performance time 14 mins exactly.
