@RegDwigнt Really nice. I wouldn't be suprised if that was written specifically for that group. One more piece for flute, viola and harp to go with the Debussy trio:
So one doesn't always have to rely on transcriptions.
I played the Debussy, btw. It was one of those happy accidents where I got to play a fine piece of chamber music for a sizable audience. I never heard of the Takemitsu till now, but I wish I'd had it back then.

It's exasperating not to be able to sing at your own home because a hundred people live within earshot (if I go full voice that shouldn't be an exaggeration) and nothing but paper-thin walls separate us.
Sometimes I go for a promenade along the nearby highway to practice. But that's too much trouble.
I'm also thinking about ordering a custom-made box with walls of wood and foam or other soundproof material, but I don't have too much space to spare in my apartment.
The only other choice for the near future is to practice closed-mouth singing and see if it doesn't fall short of full-voice open-mouth practice in any way.
Like this, maybe.

@Færd Sing in the shower? Or on top of a mountain? A shower is a lot less trouble.

did somebody say raiders?

1 hour later…

Word of the day: snapsitter (The person who you give the user and password of your snapchat to so that they can make sure your streaks are kept alive while you're out of the country or don't have access to wifi or cellular data.)

2:16 PM
@Mitch Shower is good until you really want to shout and scream. Then it doesn't work, unless I soundproof all sides and don't turn on the water so I can take in a laptop or a book if I need them.
Mountaintops are the best. I should get one.

Word of the day: the trouser department (The Hummersexual is a man so devoid of attractiveness, and so lacking in the trouser department that he only has a chance of getting laid by getting behind the wheel of the biggest, most ridiculously oversized and overpriced passenger vehicle money can buy)
> Full many a glorious morning have I seen
Flatter the mountaintops with sovereign eye

4:21 PM
@Robusto A reasonable request.
@CowperKettle Is Snapchat still a thing?
I don't think teenagers still use it much here.

5:03 PM
I have never used Snapchat.
Nor have I seen anyone do.

5:36 PM
@Cerberus What do they tend to use now?

6:11 PM
@Mitch Instagram, Whatsapp.
@Færd I've only used it once. But it used to be quite popular among teenagers here.
They have never used Twitter.
Facebook they used a number of years ago, but no more.

6:24 PM
Customer: is this carrot genetically modified?
Salesman: why do you ask?
Carrot: yeah, why do you ask?!

@Robusto instructions unclear. English has different words for this depending on who's eating the banana pudding — yourself or the spider.
I just learned four new notes on the flute just now. Because I wanted to play Thomas Newman's intro for Six Feet Under but don't own an oboe.
It's so easy to learn the flute. Step one: don't own an oboe. Step two: profit.

2 hours later…
8:08 PM
@tchrist What would you consider high air humidity?

8:23 PM
@RegDwigнt no choclat only bananana thanx

8:40 PM
@Cerberus Anything that interferes with feeling comfortable in the heat.

No percentage ranges?

In metric?
Certainly 30 is too much in any heat.
Were you in the desert?

And how about at 24 degrees?

thinks

@tchrist I didn't know you had non-metric percentages!
Ever more exotic.

8:45 PM
77 and 30% is a bit uncomfy. Couldn't sleep that way.

And how about 80%?

Under 20 is good.
Under 10 is better.
No, 80% is insupportable no matter the temperature.
Up to 30 is ok if it's not too hot.

Today was 80%.

die die die

At 24 degrees.

8:47 PM
yeah no fun
worse in sun

Luckily, it's vacation time.
And I don't venture into the sun.

That's comfortable.

9:10 PM
There was a (small?) cyclone in the city today.
But I believe it remained over the 'river'.
They're exceedingly rare here.

You mean a tornado?
Or a hurricane?
Perhaps a waterspout?

I never know the difference between those.
> A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud.
The windstorm is often referred to as a twister, whirlwind or cyclone,[1] although the word cyclone is used in meteorology to name a weather system with a low-pressure area in the center around which, from an observer looking down toward the surface of the earth, winds blow counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern.

> Tornadoes and hurricanes appear to be similar in their general structure. Both are characterized by extremely strong horizontal winds swirling around the center, strong upward motion dominating the circulation with some downward motion in the center. The tangential winds far exceed the radial inflow or the vertical motion, and can cause much damage. Hurricanes always rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere (clockwise in the southern), the direction of their rotation being determined by the Earth's rotation. This is almost always true of tornadoes too, although on rare occasions
A tornado is a highly localized event. A twister.
A hurricane is a massive storm system.
Hurricanes can bring tornados, but not the other way around.

It appears cyclone can be used to describe either.

Tornadoes sound like a train (from hell); hurricanes sound like a wave, or waves in hell; waterspouts jump out of the pond and tear a line through your backyard like the Hulk ran through it. I don't know what cyclones are. I can't afford to travel.

9:31 PM
I thought you had earned lots of money as a computer worker!
It was smallish, in the order of meters, I would say.
I don't know the difference between waterspouts and tornadoes.
The former are smaller?
It is called a windhoos in Dutch.
I don't know whether it's the hoos related to hausse or to hose.
It is related to hose, because of the shape.
Fun fact: French haut is from Latin altus, but it got its h- by contamination from Germanic hauhe "high".

9:49 PM
@Cerberus Telegram is not trendy yet? WhatsApp is so clumsy and dumb in comparison.
That they don't use Twitter is interesting.
It's very popular in some countries, eg Brasil. And it's getting bigger in Iran, despite censorship.

@Færd Thanks for the elucidating drawings.
@Færd I agree that Telegram is somewhat better, but, for most people, it makes no difference, I think.
The main reason why Telegram remains a secondary player is simply that everybody is on Whatsapp.
I use Telegram as well, but only with a few people.
I wish I could convince more people.
Children are fairly stupid; most don't care that much, as long as it's whatever their friends use.
I use Signal with a few people as well; it is probably the most secure/private programme, but it is slightly less convenient than Telegram.
@Færd Interesting. How do people manage, with the censorship?
Are their phones all conexed to a VPN permanently?
You don't want to miss messages because the conexion is unreliable.

10:07 PM
@Cerberus Elucidating is the right word.
@Cerberus I think Telegram may be on the rise at enough speed to catch up fairly soon.
@Cerberus So that's complicated.
Some people are always connected to VPN providers.
But the government tries to block those too, which makes it difficult for people and they would have to switch between various VPN providers all the time.
In the last several years, I believe, a black market for more reliable VPNs has emerged.
The money circulation was remarkable, but I don't remember the exact number. It's rumored that some of those who want to perpetuate the censorship are beneficiaries of that market.
Internet censorship was a failed policy in Iran, as opposed to, say, China.
So far at least. Domestic messaging apps didn't catch on, and Telegram's popularity didn't fall much. People got better at bypassing it.
An insurmountable obstacle would be if Amazon blocked the channels that VPN providers use for their Iranian clients. That would be disastrous, since they're processing half the internet by now.

So how reliable is Telegram for you?

Reliable in what terms?
Instantly accessible?

Are you confident that your messages will be delivered, and that you will receive all messages promptly?

Well, I don't use Telegram for prompt communication.
Not anymore.
But I could, on a normal day.
But on those days that they crack down hard on VPNs, no, it's not reliable.

Hmm.
So then how can it still be so popular?

10:19 PM
I think because those who use it for their day-to-day lives can manage it on most days.
Partly.
Another reason is that it was THE messaging app in Iran, 40 million users or something. Lots of businesses use Telegram. Lots of groups, etc.
There was not enough impetus for a seismic shift, apparently, even with the censorship.

Interesting how that works.

It's a challenge. And it's cathartic to overcome it.

I cannot image using a programme for daily communication that wasn't reliable; then again, what would I do if the same happened to Whatsapp here?
It's always good to use several programmes at the same time.
I use Telegram, Whatsapp, Signal, and good, old SMS.

Uh-huh. WhatsApp and Instagram have gained in popularity as messaging apps, no doubt, filling the gap left after Telegram got less reliable.
But Telegram has irreplaceable facilities, so it still remains a very popular one.

Is Whatsapp not censored?
What facilities are deemed irreplaceable?

10:28 PM
@Cerberus It is not! Interestingly. Not even in Russia, I guess.

Good!

@Cerberus Channels, big groups and their unique manageability options, aesthetic features, etc.
Ease of content sharing.

Although I'd have preferred it if Telegram were uncensored instead of Whatsapp.
@Færd OK so many people use big groups? They don't here. And what's the main advantage to channels? I don't really know what they are.

Indeed. WhatsApp's security has fallen into serious disrepute.

@Færd How is it easier than in Whatsapp?
@Færd Oh? I didn't know that?
The main thing I have against Whatsapp is its owner...
And the fact that it has no Windows programme.

10:32 PM
@Cerberus Yeah. But channels are even more important. I follow channels on Telegram with hundreds of thousands of followers. Some news, some critical of the government, etc. That makes Telegram much more dangerous. Because it's easier for people to use it to organize protests etc.

I see.

@Cerberus The CEO of Telegram wrote a good catalog of WhatsApp's security shortcomings. Lemme find it.

But this can be done using any kind of web service?
Like Facebook, Twitter, or whatever?

Yeah, I suppose, with varying degrees of ease.

@Færd Hmm I have also read about criticism of Telegram's proprietary security system.

10:35 PM
The biggest advantage for Telegram was its popularity. 40 million. No other social media or messaging apps came close.
Except for Instagram, which is not to be taken seriously, really.

@Færd I understand that.
@Færd No, indeed.
Do you use Insta?

@Cerberus No doubt. They boast about a flawless system worthy of total confidence, but meh. Who knows what's going on behind the curtains.
@Cerberus Yeah.

> • Right click the Send button to send any message without sound – in case the recipient is sleeping.
• Enable Slow Mode in Group Permissions to control how frequently members can post.
I've just received the latest update.
Rather nice!
@Færd How do you feel about it?

This is the article I mentioned: Why WhatsApp Will Never Be Secure. A good one on WhatsApp.
@Cerberus It can waste your time and mess with your nerves if you spend too much time on it or loosen your control.
It's considered the most harmful social medium to mental health.
But it's good to have a way to reach lots of past students and teachers and old friends, if you want to.

@Færd I'm afraid that is a bit long for me.
@Færd I can understand that...

10:42 PM
And if you amass a large followership then you'll be able to communicate your ideas to them easily thru posts and stories and whatnot.

Especially for children.

Yeap.
@Cerberus Ah, also @RegDwigнt puts out his videos on Instagram too, which is good for me because I don't follow anyone on YouTube.

Right.
The urge has just never grabbed me.

You haven't missed out on much.

Oh, I am glad.

10:52 PM
@Cerberus Who, me? That musta been a misunderstanding or an outright lie. We're so technical over here...last time, we just paid a big guy (like prison-buff) to pick up 56' of fence and hold it sorta plumb while my IT guy cargo-strapped it to a tree. Done.

Uhh how inventive!

11:31 PM
@Færd well sucks to be you, cuz I just put my longest video ever on YouTube and I'm not putting it on Instagram because nobody watches videos that long on Instagram. Not even you.
On the plus side, I put quite a few short videos on Insta that I would never put on YouTube.
So I dunno.
I try to work with the medium not against it.
That includes a cost–benefit analysis, mind. You have like what, 300 Instagram followers? 3000? I have like 3. You and two other people. So there's always that to keep in mind.
That one video of yours where you played guitar had like 50k views or something.
I would post videos of myself playing guitar, too, if anyone actually watched them. But they don't, and so I don't.
And Facebook is basically just dead at this point. Used to be diminishing returns, now it's just no returns, period. I only post there if I want my brother to see it, who's literally nowhere else.
I dunno. The landscape is so fragmented and splintered it's not even funny anymore. It's not even sad anymore. Literally everyone is somewhere else from everyone else. Everyone lives in their own little niche. Everyone has become George W. Bush.
It's not an original thought by any means, but the Internet at this point is just a billion hermits.
Used to be different.
Used to be that if you were Brad Pitt, people would follow you around. Try and find you. Now it's reversed. You have to find the people. If they're on Twitter, you need to be on Twitter. They won't give a fuck that you're on Instagram and Snapchat and YouTube and Facebook and Deviantart and MOCpages and a billion other places. They only care if you're on their one place. They won't go looking for you. You need to go looking for them.
And frankly nobody has the time for that bullshit. Especially not Brad Pitt.
Which is why so many people that have anything of value to say or contribute are not online at all, in any way shape or form.
