8:03 PM
@Robusto just use actual paste.

8:14 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I dunno ... think that's white enough?

I miss mucilage.
Miss Mucilage, 1986.

@Robusto Nothing can be pastier than paste.
If you want it whiter than white you'll need to crank it up to #GGGGGG

Hi @corn. You're looking very masculine today.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 that's a lot of horses

Eagles are turning people into horses.

8:21 PM
@KitFox looks in pants
I'll be in my bunk.

@MattЭллен no, it's the html colour code for whiter-than-white

@cornbreadninja Just wank in your office. What's the worst that could happen?

@KitFox I have no door.

I leave mine open anyway.
It's more fun that way.
raises eyebrow
Am I joking? Hmm. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not.
Yes, yes, I read some bad erotica earlier.
It's possible my cave neighbor caught me groping.

8:26 PM
sighs I have such fun adventures.

I changed back to Tough Cornbread, but gravatar hasn't refreshed it yet.

Strictly for medical purposes, of course.
So you were in drag for kicks?
Or something special?

It amused me a couple of nights ago to use the gravatar dude's picture as my gravatar.
I'm over it.

I see.
I'm not sure what to write about next in my story.

@cornbreadninja just hit "refresh" in your browser

8:30 PM
I hit the halfway mark this afternoon.
Ctrl+Shift+R should clear your cache.

@KitFox congratulations!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ok

Thanks. I didn't think I would make it this far.

I never stopped believing in you.

which is lucky - we're all a dream in your head.

Funny. I just had this song in my head:

8:35 PM
gah, now I have it in my head!!!

quick! to the key of awesome!

Hahahaha.

I mean axis

Live it! Love it! You know you want to!

8:36 PM
@MattЭллен My favorite.

:D
I'm listening to journey. Cruising through vice city. Ah yeah.

SWEEET!
The guy in the hoodie looks like an ex-lover of mine.

Also, has the same nasally kind of singing voice.

Is he holding what I think he's holding?
that is - a luminous dildo

8:40 PM
It looks like a Feeldo™ to me.

that's really bendy

@KitFox This is the way The Sopranos ended. Are you trying to do the same thing here?

@Robusto Uh. I don't know how the Sopranos ended. Does that mean I'm missing the joke?

> Taliban fails to BCC an e-mail, reveals its entire PR mailing list

8:42 PM
@KitFox I guess we can't be up on all the important TV series ever produced.

@Cerberus hahahaha ... I guess email isn't just for outing 4-star generals who are having extra-marital affairs anymore.

Hehe.
"E-mail, now for every idiot!"
Get your disc now!

whAt is > godlike?

Like a god.

8:50 PM
but much better?

Resembling a god.
Not necessarily better or worse.

Yep. Simply "like a god".

I wrote undefeated, maybe not > godlike but still very very good (about the dog)
I'm looking for superlative++ (yes I am drunk)

What dog?
Omnipotent?

> omnipotent :)

8:56 PM
greater than godlike, I think is what Johan means

Oh, is that what the > is for…?

user19161
@MattЭллен Greater than godlike? Isn't that God?

@WillHunting Er, no.

user19161
@Mahnax I reached 24k, yay!!!

@WillHunting Yeah but what's next?

8:57 PM
@WillHunting Congrats!

You used to your deity being only godlike? Try new God™ — when godlike just doesn't cut it.

(I'm writing a facebook tag btw)

@MattЭллен Wow, they even have the double rainbow song

@MattЭллен [x] New god

user19161
@JohanLarsson Well, God becomes nothing when the universe shrinks to a point.

8:58 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah! I didn't know what that was until I saw the big fat quiz of the year 2010. Which was last week

@WillHunting But what will Will hunt then?

user19161
@JohanLarsson I see you are becoming a regular in this room.

@WillHunting I am drunk now, very drunk :)

user19161
@JohanLarsson Yes, I can sort of tell, because you are saying more than usual.

[x] Scandinavian

9:01 PM
I'm half Finnish, but Johan here is a Swede.

user19161
I also capped today, yay!!!

congrats!

user19161
@MattЭллен This is a glorious retirement!

@Mahnax Finnish >> Swedish imo

user19161
@JohanLarsson Meaning better?

9:02 PM
@JohanLarsson Why do you say that?

@WillHunting yep

user19161
@JohanLarsson In what way?

@WillHunting until you're tempted back for one more prize fight.

@Mahnax hmm, yuo ut me on the spot now but it was my knee jerk response

user19161
@MattЭллен No way! This retirement is real!

user19161
9:03 PM
@JohanLarsson I thought the knee jerk would be in the other direction.

@MattЭллен schmoyoho!

@JohanLarsson Maybe you would have a different opinion if you were sober, haha.

user19161
@Mahnax Yes, the inequality would be reversed!

@WillHunting It was in one direction, analyzing it was not
@Mahnax prob not
@Mahnax You speak Finnish?

@JohanLarsson Just a little bit.
I'm trying to learn it.

user19161
9:06 PM
Can someone tell me if Ouvert et haut means over and out?

It does.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 lol

user19161
@Mahnax Does it have the right meaning?

I know the profanity part of Finnish, my gut feeling is that it is a substantial part of the language

Nope.
It means "open and high".

9:07 PM
@MattЭллен their "love song" song reminds me of "The grunge song" from Radio Free Vestibule

@Cerberus Hrmm.

user19161
@Cerberus So the phrase doesn't make sense? Then why does Reg use it?

I suppose it does!

@WillHunting it's a bilingual pun

@JohanLarsson Haha, you're correct in saying that.

9:08 PM
Because it sounds somewhat like "over and out", which means something in English.
@Mahnax Yes, yes.

user19161
@Cerberus Ah, well I shan't use Ouvert et haut anymore then!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I will check them out!

@MattЭллен it's old

well, I don't get out much :D

@MattЭллен yeah that's it. There's another video here but the quality is shite

9:11 PM
@Johan I'll be in Finland this summer, actually.

@WillHunting I won't stop you.

Best lyrics ever?^^

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 what's the schmoyoho love song/ I can't seem to find it

@Mahnax Summer in Finland is a decent pick imo, have not been there much tho

@JohanLarsson I have been there before, it's usually quite nice.

9:12 PM
@MattЭллен no the axis of awesome love song

Not too hot, maybe around 20˚ most of the time.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 oh :D

@Mahnax I bet, I have not been there much but think it is very similar to Sweden, this time of the year != kool tho

@JohanLarsson I like winter in Finland. Cold and dark, my favourite.

9:21 PM
@Mahnax Winter is nice the current season is not tho I call it 'the black darkness'

@JohanLarsson How apt.

apt?
appropriate?

Yes.

That is what the lyrics I posted does, stacking (black darkness)
'It feels stuppid and idiotic'
I guess google translate does not do justice to the lyrics

@JohanLarsson even intelligent translation of lyrics is usually hard, never mind machine translation

9:28 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah, that is true, I was lazy and humble

Axis of Tim Minchin

I noticed an intersting follower:
Hello everyone.

@Carlo_R. Interesting why?

@MattЭллен awesome!

Her comments seem rather interesting. @joha
ELU needs of those new followers. @joha

9:38 PM
@Carlo_R. link?

Wait, please @Joha

johan.WaitOne();

Follow that link and you will see her comments. @Joha

I looked at them already, it may very well be due to my poor English but I did not see it

Well, i'm off. bye!

9:43 PM
It is unclear to me what you did not see, probably because my English is moor poor than yours.
sorry "more", not "moor"!
by the way, I have to go now. I'm working on skeptic.SE. I hope to see you later. Bye.

@Carlo_R. I was not seeking confrontation, just did not see it :)

@MattЭллен is that the eyeliner dude?
hello @Mahnax!

@cornbreadninja Tim Minchin?

@cornbreadninja Hi there!

@MattЭллен seems to be!
@Mahnax how goes it?

9:52 PM
@cornbreadninja Goes it well! I've just made myself a nice mocha.
And yourself?

@Mahnax mmmmm. Not bad; it is 15C.

@cornbreadninja :D then yes!

@MattЭллен he is scary with that eyeliner on!

@cornbreadninja Nice. It was 8˚C here this morning, but now it's only 1˚C.

@cornbreadninja not hawt? hmmm. I might have to rethink my outfit...

user19161
9:53 PM
@cornbreadninja I wish it were that cold here!

Also, I got my driver's license yesterday.

user19161
@Mahnax Yay!!!

@MattЭллен ha
@Mahnax YAY!

user19161
@cornbreadninja Too late, I said first so I win...

bows gracefully Yay indeed!

9:55 PM
@MattЭллен only the Scottish kitty gets clothes.
change already, gravatar!

user19161
@cornbreadninja I was about to ask you, I still see Matt there.

harumpf.

@cornbreadninja maybe it's a died in the fur Scot?

user19161
I am going to bed, over and out!

10:00 PM
@WillHunting sweet dreams!
@MattЭллен ha!
@Mahnax do you have your own whip yet?
(where whip == car)

@cornbreadninja mine took ages to change last time. days even

@tchrist
$ wc -l choose-between.txt

@cornbreadninja Nope, and I don't plan to buy one.

@MattЭллен it took almost no time for GravaMatt to show up.

@cornbreadninja yeah, Gravatar is fickle like that.

10:03 PM
@MετάEd grep -n goo choose-between.txt

I'd rather save my money for a trip around Europe after high school, which is what I'm doing.

@MattЭллен I remember when you changed to orc head.
@Mahnax niiiiiiiiiiice.

@cornbreadninja Er, is that sarcasm?

@tchrist
$ grep -n goo choose-between.txt
7:8841 good
375:153 goods

@MετάEd sorry; I learned about grep last night.
@Mahnax quite the opposite.
er . . .

10:04 PM
@cornbreadninja Oh, good.

@cornbreadninja Yeah, I posted queries on the meta and on the wordpress forums and everything! Then it just changed when I deleted my previous gravatar.

I'm quite excited to travel.

@Mahnax that is a nice use of funds.

@cornbreadninja There's a story about grep.

@MattЭллен oh geez.

10:05 PM
@cornbreadninja I agree. A Europe trip is so much more valuable than a noisy money pit, in my mind.

@Mahnax Where are you going?

@MετάEd do tell

@cornbreadninja Alice in UNIX Land
2

apparently gravatar caches need time to catch up, but I think there is a flaw, sometimes. It can't require me to delete my old one to update.

@JohanLarsson When I graduate, I'm taking a trip around most of Europe.
I'll either start or finish the trip in Iceland, because I want to go there very badly.

10:06 PM
@MετάEd reads

@Mahnax travel >> car imo

@JohanLarsson Agreed!
I'd like to see Norway and Sweden too.

@Mahnax What are you looking for? Urban stuff?

@MετάEd @_@

@JohanLarsson I want to see the cities, yeah.

10:10 PM
I suck at cities but I say Oslo, best city I've been in and I did Copacabana on c*ke 2000
But Oslo is expensive, 500$ nights...

@JohanLarsson is that a bitwise shift?

@cornbreadninja depends

@JohanLarsson okay

@cornbreadninja what do you mean btw?

@JohanLarsson I think >> is the bitwise shift operator
In say, Java

10:20 PM
yep

and probably many others

and all C clones?

@MετάEd So them was a good choice after all. Thanks. And yes, I see I need those files.

G-L-O-R-I-A

@JohanLarsson Call them not clones but decendants.

10:24 PM
@tchrist I stand corrected

Oh, please sit down. No one is playing one of those standerupper songs. :)
Note that just what ">>" does in the face of signed numbers varies a great deal. You can even get variation in the same language.
macbook# perl -E 'say -500 >> 2'
1073741699
macbook# perl -Minteger -E 'say -500 >> 2'
-125

What we can learn from it is to go bitwise in Olso and just see what happens?

@JohanLarsson :O
Watch out for Turbojugend.

10:30 PM
@cornbreadninja Stay home and chat?

@JohanLarsson sure.
except . . . commutes

what does gore mean?

It’s what one ox does to another.
Or the result of such activity.

@JohanLarsson He's a complex man. It's difficult to tell.

Exodus 21:28 If a man-moo-cow stix hiz hoarn ina kitteh so hardd it dyz, de man-moo-cow getz offed. No bull! ! Teh man-moo-cow muss be kilt wid stoanz huckd at it, an U cannod eet teh meetz. Butt teh kitteh hoo pwnd teh moocow iz not blaimd.

Yours?

Yes.
It's in the very early stages. It works, but works slowly.
The save/restore feature is nice but what it really needs is random access.

Good lucks with applying regexes to something that supports random access.

Q: Word for: 'Because of war'

XophmeisterI'm looking for, as I feel there probably is, an adjective that means something along the lines of 'as a consequence of war'. e.g., "The women were bored by the X lack of men." Where X implies that the lack of men is due to some war.

Hahaha ... they were "bored" by the lack of men due to war. Ho-hum.

I fear I may be developing a major attitude problem with all these SWRs.
Most are either idiotic, or bikeshedding, or both.

Q: word for people who continually try and teach you when it's not necessary?

KyleI've experienced this way too many times, and the best example I can give is a person who treats you like you have no idea how to do X and who keeps teaching you how to do it. I feel handicapped. Take for example how to play a card game. You know how to play the game because you've played it 5 t...

It’s all predicated upon the conceit that all scenarios, howsoever complex they may be, can always be losslessly compressed into a single word. It’s just dumb.
Our multicollider collective ranking is embearasking.

10:52 PM
@tchrist Ogg Verbis would do the job, no doubt.

That one smarts.

We were talking about BASIC-PLUS the other day; what I need to figure out in Perl is how to do the moral equivalent of DIM #1.
@tchrist Mostly, these people are perfectly willing to accept a "term" instead of a "word"; what they can't accept is research effort.
The more practical problem is the use of EL&U as a human dictionary or thesaurus.
@tchrist That's not a problem. One can always ignore keys and just slog through a dataset. But if one can do a key based select first, and then apply regex to what's left, that's much faster.

@MετάEd Remind me what that did again.

@tchrist It maps an array to a disk file -- and not by mapping the entire file at once, but by doing the seeks and buffering invisibly.

tie
Like dbm.
It was in perl3 already.
I have 52 Tie:: modules on my box, and there are ten on CPAN for every one I have, if not more.
Tie::File(3) Perl Programmers Reference Guide Tie::File(3)
    NAME
       Tie::File - Access the lines of a disk file via a Perl array
DESCRIPTION
       "Tie::File" represents a regular text file as a Perl array. Each element in the array
       corresponds to a record in the file.  The first line of the file is element 0 of the array;
       the second line is element 1, and so on.
       The file is not loaded into memory, so this will work even for gigantic files.
I’ve never looked behind the curtain.
And surely there are more of these.
Like DB_File’s DB_RECNO binding.
