2:00 PM
This one has better ranine graphics:
Hm, and murine.
But this is the Grammy winner:

Everything hunky-dory over there?

@Cerberus I dunno. My bear really got somebody’s goat the other night.

Oh, dear.

Good morning. Anyone here have any experience embedding jruby in a web container?

I do!
No, I don't.

2:03 PM
@Cerberus It’s true.

I ain't no spider.

Sorry, I lied. I wanted to be helpful.

Hahaha.
Some people actually do that.
I seem to remember some book or film.

@KitFox Well, thanks for building up my hopes and then tearing them down mercilessly!

> A north Boulder couple is mourning the loss of their beloved 13-month-old pygmy goat named Charm after it was attacked and killed by a bear Wednesday night in their back yard.

2:05 PM
Where someone weaves a totally unnecessary web of lies just so that people might like her.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Sorry. Can I help you somehow?

People who keep dwarven goats in their back yards are just providing a fast-food fix for the bears.

@Cerberus was it the autobiography of a politician?

Haha.

avoids insulting pygmies

2:05 PM
@MattЭллен I think this person actually wanted to help people, so no.

@KitFox Nah, it's okay. Actually I'm wondering if it's just a waste of time. I think the net result will be almost the same as if I just launch ruby in a standalone process. But that is a bigger IT change so I am resisting it so far.

@Cerberus lol

And she did not benefit from it in any way.

awww. sounds like a sad story

2:07 PM
sexercisey

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 This could be in Dragon Age. If I understand it correctly. Or at all.

I don't understand it. I'm so old.

@KitFox Fixed.
I think this is about where you can have sex in some role-playing game.

@Cerberus It's in regards to a device that gives you points for exercising in the real world.

Ohh.
Ahah.

2:10 PM
If you wear it while you're having sex, it measures the exercise you've had and awards points
People have been caught cheating on their significant others because they shared their exercise data.

That explains the Nike thingy.

Oh funny.

So I'm watching a video where a bunch of lego geeks are making fun of bronies.

Hilarious.

Why do these milktoasts use such long and euphemizing circumlocutions like fuck harness just to avoid saying the widely offensive sling?

2:12 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 This sounds sooo much like an urban legend...

@tchrist three words: target audience

And I'm like "seriously? you're going to make fun of an adult who is into a kids show/toy?"
@Cerberus Well, it's been reported in the newspapers

My Chilean colleague names timeout variables end_of_time, which I find somewhat funny.

Bronies?

Well, bronies are kinda weird.

2:13 PM
Brownies? Is this slang for black people?

@Cerberus men who like my little pony

Huh?
There is a name for that?

apparently

And a seemingly arbitrary one at that?

@KitFox Please, let's not talk about bronies.

2:13 PM
@Robusto ♬ Will you love me tonight? ♬

@Cerberus It's not arbitrary at all!

@Cerberus Arbitrary? Hardly.

As soon as I heard it I knew what it meant

Then what does it mean?

2:13 PM
Br...br...

@MattЭллен Damn you! Why couldn't you wait for me to ask for that not to be discussed?

Bro + pony.
Jinx!

Huh. Why bro?

@Cerberus Hey bro, whassup?

2:14 PM
@Robusto it's easier to get forgiveness than permission?

@Cerberus Asquerous kidzlang.

@KitFox But why with ponies? Because bro sounds masculine or something?

@Cerberus Bro is masculine.

Brummies.

2:15 PM
@Cerberus gee deesley, you not know the dictionary. GR for shore

And rhymes with "po."

@Cerberus BRO is short for brother. And bronies are men who like my little PONY. thus BRONY

@MattЭллен What? I know what bro means.

offers @KitFox her missing o

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 All right, it still sounds a bit odd to me, OK.

2:16 PM
@Cerberus ok. then I don't understand what you don't understand :D

I still want to read brownies.

Hey conrgatulations @JSB!

And eat them too.

mmmm. brownies

See?

2:16 PM
Brownies.

@Cerberus Women who like MLP are reportedly sometimes called "Pegasisters" shudders

So conflicted.

I was going to write 400 more words before lunch, but I'm really hungry now...

Brownies are what black MLP fans are called.

2:17 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Umm right.

Ahhh what have you done!

I am a cruel man, I know. But I've done it to myself as well

Home-made brownies...

2:18 PM
tries to think of store-bought brownies, which are usually awful and bland

Brownies with nuts. Yuck.

yum!
I like nuts

Hmm but nuts are good!
Oops.

There is no way that "bro" makes "brony" masculine. It subverts masculinity. "It is human tennis elbow! It is a pizza burn on the roof of the world's mouth! It's the opposite of Batman!"
2

Calm down.

See?
I don't make those things up.

But the word is still far from arbitrary
and as soon as I heard it I understood it.

Well.
I don't know what to say.
I thought I had a childhood trauma about Crunch the Rock Dog.
But you...

@Cerberus Wow, that is so sad. It makes Little Nell's plight seem laughably trivial by comparison.

Actually I did used to watch My Little Pony. it was on TV before school. Along with "Gummi Bears". They were pretty awful shows. But they were the only cartoons on at that time. It was that or "Breakfast television"

2:23 PM
You watched television before school?

Your small pictures don't frighten me.

That is wrong on so many levels!

haha, so this guy is giving a speech about the stages of AFOLdom. and he's talking about the phase where you sort your lego. Then the phase where you get your kids to do it for you. And I'm like "hm. I did think of that... my daughter would love to sort lego!"

@Cerberus Yes, after we were done getting ready, we usually had some free time.

2:25 PM
freaked out

@Cerberus Your big pictures don't frighten me. I am not afraid of dogs of any size.

GROWL!!

We didn't watch TV before school. My mum had the radio on. never TV though. I guess it would hypnotise us too much and we'd be late or something

There!

2:27 PM
@MattЭллен Yeah, well, what do you expect from someone who lives in a segregationist town.

@Robusto a place for everyone and everyone in his place
brb - making lunch

user19161
@Robusto I am afraid of dogs of any size, I'm a wuss.

@WillHunting You should spend some time with dogs, they're not so bad.
Made using the eye-windshield pieces from the Cars sets

Haha excellent.

who is the top one?

2:40 PM
The Star Wars princess thing?

Queen Amidala

Natalie Portman slash Keira Knightley.

ah! thanks

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I like how Google is overwhelmed by demand for the Nexus 4. That means the Nexus brand is sailing steady. More than steady: it's currently levitating high above the waves and it's headed for the sky.

2:55 PM
Whoa. Is this the International Declamatory Speech Day?

I know you hate Slate, but ...

@Cerberus I don't like it. every day that it's not available means someone buys some other phone instead.
btw did you hear that google wants to be a mobile carrier?

@Robusto Yay!
@Robusto I don't hate it that much. In fact, I read Dear Prudence regularly.
But Manjoo is something else.
Same guy telling us the Iphone was made in heaven is now totally dissing it.
Sounds like attention seeking...
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I don't know...it does get lots of free publicity.
That may just be enough to lure away some of the typical stupid users who think "oooooh shiny!" (no offence, present company excluded). And I think we all know who those users are.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Huh? That sounds like an excellent idea for North America.
I mean, it is like trading Medusa for Medea, but still.

3:10 PM
@Cerberus I just hope they can pull it off. It's a challenging task.

Vertical lock-in v. horizontal oligopoly.

All they need to accomplish is to raise the bar for competition

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'm not so sure: they will probably start as an virtual carrier, or whatever it's called...

The other carriers are not THAT bad. They are just mainly over-priced and they try to sell you phones that only work on their systems.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Only if they raise it hard and high, or the oligopoly will just sit it out.

3:12 PM
@Cerberus Yeah but those carriers have failed to really change anything in the market.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 They are very bad. Every time I read anything about I am shocked at the brainwashing.
How people link a phone to a carrier.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But Google could, perhaps...

In Canada a few years ago we had a bunch of new wireless companies that launched on new spectrum. I am using one. Its service keeps improving and the coverage area keeps expanding. Hopefully they will achieve critical mass soon enough to pose a serious threat to the incumbents.

We have tons of virtual carriers that are doing well, and every oligopolist has a very cheap virtual carrier of its own to boot! I am using one! And it's cheap.

@Cerberus The thing is: in many cases the phone is physically linked to the carrier anyway due to differing network technology.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Great! But...if you change the number from 3 to 4, is that going to help in the long run?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Right, that is one big problem.
They should all switch to GSM.

3:15 PM
@Cerberus The problem is that a new carrier has to be reliable and high speed and have lots of coverage all at once. Otherwise people won't switch.
@Cerberus GSM is the old standard.
They are actively deploying competing LTE networks that are not interoperable.

People are still a bit brainwashed here too. But it has always been very easy to circumvent the brainwashing, and we have never had branded stuff. Or hardly any. And more and more people are on SIM-only nowadays.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Of course. So virtual providers can work, if properly enforced by the state.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That is a problem. And it is extremely stupid.
Thankfully, LTE can be avoided for the intermediate future.

@Cerberus Anyway the problem is not so much the locked phones. For many people that's a theoretical issue because their phone doesn't work anywhere else. The problem is the high costs. And only the new carriers who operate their own networks have truly lower costs.

As long as GSM can get speeds up to, what was it, 72 Mbps?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 All interrelated.

@Cerberus "stupid"? There are many reasons why they do that. They are not all "stupid".
@Cerberus That's not GSM. That's HSPA.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It is stupid that this happens. It's bad for society and the economy.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well that goes over the GSM/3G/whatever network, doesn't it?
It's all interoperable.

3:19 PM
Dont' forget. The US is as big as all of Europe. The networks have a much wider geographic area to cover. Their costs are significantly higher.

So?

@Cerberus ... it's like a separate technology. I don't think it matters if the underlying network is GSM or CDMA.

Vodafone and T-Mobile cover all of Europe, as far as I know.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Uh I think it does?
I can use HSPA(+) anywhere in Europe where it is available, I believe?

> I love thee with serotonin produced by my raphe nuclei. I love thee with testosterone receptors deep in my hypothalamus. I love thee with dopamine that floods my primitive lizard brain.
3

@Cerberus So if an established network needs to add high-speed, and they have a choice: build a whole new network, or expand their existing network, and they can add high-speed for a fraction of the cost by just expanding their network, and the phones can be made more cheaply because they use similar radios for the old network and the new, etc, etc...
@Cerberus There are CDMA networks in Canada that offer HSPA.

3:22 PM
Oh.
Well, it is a mess.
I don't want to think about it any longer.
I should be different, but it isn't.
Soit.

yeah. It's a mess. It's very confusing. And not consumer friendly. But while the mobile carriers are driven by profit, not all their technology decisions are purely motivated by greed. There are lots of practical considerations.
@KitFox how sweet thou art!

Of course.

The situation isn't perfect in Europe either. example: the cheap sim cards offered by T-Mobile Austria only work in Austria. My phone works everywhere, but I wouldn't be able to roam with those cards.
And surely there are some phones which don't work everywhere in Europe.
It's kinda funny, an accident of history, in a way, that the US is one country instead of 50.

Argh. I don't know if I'm doing this right.
punches computer

3:37 PM
It's simple. If computer still works, you not punch right.

I'm doing a crazy series of left outer joins.
Seems like there ought to be an easier way.

woops, I'm still in here.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 CDMA sounds like Wheel of Fortune.

@WillHunting mmmmmkay

user19161
Non Sequitur strikes again.

user19161
3:47 PM
I have a question which I posted before and deleted before it was closed or answered. I think I will post it again.

@WillHunting Just undelete it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh, that is absolutely true, and it is ridiculous.
So where is @DavidWallace?
You have been away for so long!

user19161
@tchrist Ha, it was so long ago I forgot what I wrote, I don't even know if it is searchable...

@Cerberus Immolated.
@WillHunting Of course it isn’t searchable to submods. But if you know its One True Name, which is numeric, actually, or even the SEO name, you can go to it directly.
Also, perhaps Google remembers it from pre-deletion days.
The address doesn’t change, just the searchability.

user19161
But it has probably expired even in the cache.

3:53 PM
Or you could ask a mod.

Right.
Nicely, of course.

user19161
Or unnicely of course.

Will doesn't have to ask nicely.

Only because @Nicely is not a mod here.

user19161
Nice is a place in France I think.

3:56 PM
It is!
Nice is nice, though a bit nouveau-riche.

user19161
I like to upvote answers to a question I also answered for a few reasons (1) give the answerers some rep (2) The question is then technically answered (3) when people see that the other answers have been upvoted, they may also upvote mine to balance the number.

So @Will, which question were you looking for?
Oh it must be this one:

user19161
@KitFox Hmm, is there a practice practise licence license question?

user19161
@KitFox Yes, smart fox!

That's the only deleted one.
yip yip
I'm off to lunch. Later.

3:59 PM
@WillHunting Où on parle le niçois / Niçard.
